The Boston Red Sox designated reliever Bryan Corey for assignment yesterday, the second time they have done so this season. The Boston Globe’s Gordon Edes had a very good column on Corey today, reminding us that there is still a significant caste system in Major League Baseball:

Feel sorry for him? That’s the last thing he would want. A little understanding, maybe, that there’s a huge difference between the big-league life lived by Manny and Papi and ‘Tek and Schill, and the one lived by Bryan Corey and the many like him inhabiting the periphery of the game, here one day, a line of small type in the newspaper the next.

“We’re not all millionaires,” he said the other morning in Tropicana Field. “I have a nice life, a comfortable life – well, somewhat comfortable.”

Corey strikes me as a 4A player, a guy who is plenty good enough for the highest levels of the minor leagues but never quite manages to stick in the majors for very long, for whatever reason. (Curtis Pride was a 4A-type player.) This season, he has a 10.50 ERA in seven games (six innings), largely due to a couple of terrible outings prior to his first DFA. He has only pitched once since then, on April 25, and struggled with his control.

Given Boston’s bullpen issues thus far, there’s a good chance that Corey will be back with the team soon (assuming he clears waivers and isn’t traded and all that good stuff).

It’s great to see the Sox playing the Indians again. As Remy went through the defense on the Indians we were pleasantly reminded that they have Ass-Dribble Cabrera playing second base.

We learned that Travis Hafner has a fan club consisting of one rather large woman called “Hafner’s Heffers”. I don’t know about anyone else, but I thought it was hysterical and reminded me of the Pittsburgh fans we found during football season. Click for Front Click for Back.

I forgot to touch on the buried jersey stuff in my Bruins frenzy I was thrown into on Sunday night when I posted so I’ll touch on that now. Um, who gives a shit? Seriously? It’s such a fucking stupid thing. We all got a chuckle out of the fact that a Sox jersey was buried in the New Yankees Stadium, but did we really give a shit? I know I didn’t.

But apparently Hank Steinbrenner did. It cost the team $50K to have the jersey dug up. You’re telling me that the $50K couldn’t have been used for something better like maybe a few extra toilets? Just thinking out loud. Now they want to charge this guy with a crime too? Um, I don’t think that the shirt was hurting anything. It’s stupid mush-mouth Hank’s idea to dig it up, don’t put the blame on this guy.

So to recap, the Sox took two of three from the Spanks. Mike Timlin showed us on Friday that he’s old and perhaps keeping Bryan Corey on the team would’ve been the better play. Time will tell, but I put Friday’s loss on Timlin’s shoulders despite the fact the offense managed one God Damned hit (A JD homer) until Coco’s bullshit bunt hit in the 9th made it two.

Even with the departure of Charles Steinberg the Sox continue to whore themselves out to every avail. The latest is yet another Massachusetts Lottery ticket, this time a $20 ticket. Um, I didn’t win shit on the $5 or $10 tickets all of a sudden I’m going to pay $20? Eat a dick is a phrase that comes to mind. Even better, since we already can’t get tickets to games the team is now going to hold random auctions for tickets. Now normally when it benefits the Jimmy Fund or The Red Sox Foundation I’m OK with auctions, but these latest ones are just a way for the team to make more money. Um, fuck you, you greedy bag of dicks.

Let’s keep going on this for a minute. Jerry Remy as president of Red Sox Nation, telling me to “join”. Um, I was born into it and I don’t need a faggoty card to prove it. Now I see him on the Jordan’s Furniture commercial telling me to buy furniture and that it’s a great deal. Mind your business and don’t tell me what to do. Also there’s no fucking way I’m entering the “Ring Raffle”. I wasn’t on the fucking team, I’m a fan. Players get rings, not fucking fans. At least proceeds for that go to the Red Sox Foundation.

Finally I will touch on something I heard on Sports Radio over the weekend. Booing David Ortiz. The question was proposed that if the slump continues at what point do the fans get on him? How about you don’t! Unlike a piece of human excrement like Julio Lugo, Ortiz has given everything to this team that gave him a shot when the Twins didn’t want him. He’s huge in the community, great with kids and is an all around good guy. Let him hit his way out and applaud his efforts.

Ortiz = Free Pass

It’s 4-1 Indians in the 5th and the Sox blew a bases loaded opportunity in the 1st. Lester can’t buy a fucking strike. That’s it, I’m not watching. If they come back, great. If not, I didn’t waste my time watching. Maybe the C’s, minus the Big Three, will beat the Knicks? We shall see.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester got redemption on the A’s after a bad start in Japa

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester got redemption on the A’s after a bad start in Japan to send Boston to a 5-0 shutout victory. Lester pitched 6 2/3 innings of 3 hit ball, as the Sox offense caught fire late against the Athletics bullpen. After the A’s starter, Rich Harden pitched a solid 5 innings, the pen couldn’t do the same, allowing 9 hits and 5 runs over the final 4 innings.

After a minor slump to start the season David Ortiz hit a two run homer in the top of the 7th inning to break a scoreless tie. The Red Sox had 5 straight hits to start the 8th inning, scoring two runs on rbi singles by Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis. Captain Jason Varitek added a solo homer in the ninth inning for the final margin. The Red Sox bullpen kept the lead intact by pitching a masterful 2 2/3 innings, led by Bryan Corey, who pitched 1 1/3 of the relief while striking out 2. Manny Delcarmen finished the A’s off by pitching a inning of his own to complete the 4 hitter.

The Red Sox hitting was well balanced over the duration of the game, producing 6 batters with 2 hits. They improved to 3-1 on the season, with all of their wins coming against the A’s ball club.

Kevin Youkilis did not have an error in this game at first base, giving him the record for most consecutive games without committing an error at that position with 194 games.

Kevin Youkilis arrived at Spring Training earlier than the required date for hitters

Well, Spring Training is finally here. The first ST game is about two weeks away, the first workout is today, and the whole team reports sometime next week. I’m so pumped! There aren’t as many issues surrounding the team this spring as in years past, put that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few storylines to watch.

Hideki Okajima. Most of Oki’s nastiness last year came from the fact that American hitters were unfamiliar with his excellent change-up and his weird, apparently painful delivery. Now that batters have had a year to scout him, some of the mystery may have worn off. I’m not saying that he’ll be terrible this year, he just might not be as good as he was last year.

Coco Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury. One of the more obvious stories this spring involves two starting center fielders, with only one spot to fill. We all know how Ellsbury starting during the World Series last year while Crisp sat on the bench, but don’t forget that the Red Sox view Crisp as the incumbent center fielder. Some journalists have speculated recently that the Sox might consider starting Crisp to begin the season in order to showcase him for a potential trade, while Ellsbury would start the year in AAA Pawtucket.

5th Starter. Many Red Sox fans would automatically assume that this role would go to Clay Buccholz by default, him having thrown a no-hitter and all. However, the Red Sox seem reluctant to put too much wear and tear on him arm this season, holding him to around 180-190 innings. This means that he would likely start the year in Pawtucket, with Julian Tavarez getting the nod for the rotation. As I’ve said before, I’d not be opposed to a half year of Julie. He’s not as terrible as many people seem to think he is. Strong ST showings by dark horse candidates like Kyle Snyder, Devern Hansack (who himself had a rain-shortened no-hitter), or David Pauley might earn them the spot, but I wouldn’t count on it. Too bad we traded Kason Gabbard, he’d be an interesting option. And on the trade front, it seems the Red Sox are not interested in Joe Blanton, probably for the reasons I stated a few days ago.

Kevin Youkilis. Don’t forget that Youks hasn’t made an error at first in a regular season game since 2006. Here’s to that streak not being broken this year.

Manny Ramirez. Supposedly Manny will show up on time this year. We’ll see. He hasn’t shown up in time for Team Photo Day since 2005.

Bullpen Battle. This year there projects to be seven guys in the bullpen. Jonathan Papelbon is a lock. That leaves six spots. Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin, Manny Delcarmen, and Julian Tavarez are all but guaranteed spots. That leaves two spots for the following players to fight over: Javier Lopez, Kyle Snyder, Bryan Corey, David Pauley, Devern Hansack, David Aardsma, Dan Kolb, Edgar Martinez, and maybe Justin Masterson. Personally I think Lopez and Snyder are the most likely to fill those roles, but Aardsma is a possibility. I wouldn’t count on the others, except maybe Corey.
