PostgreSQL’s developers pronounce it /ˈpoʊst.ɡrɛs ˌkjuː ˈɛl/; It is also common to hear it abbreviated as “Postgres“, its original name. the community considered changing the name back to Postgres. However, the PostgreSQL Core Team announced in 2007 that the product would continue to be named PostgreSQL.The name refers to the project’s origins as a “post-Ingres” database, the original authors having also developed the Ingres database.

Django is an web application framework, written in Python, which follows the Model-View-Controller (MVC) Pattern. It is named after Django Reinhardt, a gypsy jazz guitarist from the 1930s to early 1950s. To this day, he’s considered one of the best guitarists of all time.Django is pronounced JANG-oh. Rhymes with FANG-oh. The “D” is silent. It was originally developed to manage several news-oriented sites for The World Company of Lawrence, Kansas,… and was released publicly under a BSD license in July 2005. In June 2008, It was announced that a newly formed Django Software Foundation will take care of Django in the future.

I created the rtodo2 Gitorious project page here. Check it out, follow my commits, submit patches, download the source etc. Check it out! There is a little code in the respository as I just started writing tonight. The source code is available through git, and is released under the BSD License.

There is a very interesting article about the GPL copyright license and the BSD copyright license, and this author’s view that the public domain is the only way to go. This is a very interesting take on both licenses.

His (her?) view is that both licenses place restrictions on the user (as he suggests all licenses do). However, I would beg to differ with the assessment on both licenses…

The GPL license does place restrictions on the user; however, those restrictions are there to preserve the freedom to change, modify, and give away the source code. That’s it. The restrictions are there to preserve freedom.

The BSD license places restrictions that basically say the user is responsible for the software, and says nothing about anything else. The BSD license was designed to preserve the freedom to do whatsoever you will with the software (including putting it into proprietary systems and not releasing source code).

However, the public domain basically places no restrictions whatsoever on your software. Thus, someone can appropriate the software, start selling it, claim they wrote it, and more – without any recourse for you, the original author. It is for this reason that the Public Domain is not where you want your software.

네이버 블로그 멈춤 현상을 추적하기 위해서 Firebug를 써봤다. 아니 이게 이렇게 파워풀한 도구일 줄이야. 칭송이 자자한 데는 다 이유가 있었던 것. 그간 쓸 일이 없어서 이 도구의 능력을 못 알아봤다.

HTML, CSS, Script, DOM, Network Connection 을 모니터링 할 수 있고, HTML, CSS은 그 자리에서 편집을, Script는 디버깅할 수 있다. 인터페이스도 깔끔하게 정리되어 있다.

Joe Hewitt은 Netscape 개발에 참여하기도 했는데, 최근에 회사가 Facebook으로 넘어가고, 자기도 Facebook 개발하느라 바빠서 Firebug에 신경을 못 쓰고 있으며, IBM Almaden에서 근무하는 John J. Barton이 주로 코딩을 한다고 한다. (바톤에게 바톤을 넘겼나?)

I don’t know what’s up with Linux users lately, but today someone tried to tell me, because I mentioned using the BSD License, that I should be using the GPL license. The reasoning being that the BSD License allows others to edit your software and then release it under a proprietary license. That’s the reason I was using the BSD License in the first place. I really don’t care if someone releases a proprietary version of my work.

There is nothing inherently evil about proprietary software. Sure, it can be “abused”, like all things. Companies hold software “hostage”, by “forcing” you to upgrade or somehow paying more money to them. Companies have you pay for software because they are interested in making money. They are a business, first and foremost. There is nothing wrong with making money, even in excess.

Sure, MS Office 2007 may cost a pretty penny, but there are plenty of docx converters out there anyways. Besides – I’m pretty much in love with Office 2007 and use it at school whenever I can (I don’t own a copy at home, unfortunately). MS may have overpriced it, but they deserve money for it.

Proprietary software is beneficial for several types of things – games,  military software, and generally, other expensive things. Compare lincity NG to Simcity 4000. There’s no competition, Simcity 4000 wins, hands down. In order for some genres of games to be good, they need a corporate backing. They need tens or hundreds of programmers and millions of dollars – not 3 guys that live in their mother’s basement. I seriously doubt you’ll ever see an open source alternative to GTA4 or the Sims 2.

I’ve never gotten how OSS is a viable market option. How do you sell software when someone can just take said software and release it for free? Makes no sense to me. You have to make your software non-reproducable order to make money. Sure, one could argue that you could just pirate said software, however, that is illegal, which is not the case for OSS software

Proprietary software will not eat, kill, or rape your children, despite what RMS wants you to believe. It may take a nice chunk out of your wallet, but it’s not evil. End of story.
