Tomorrow (10 November) is the last day to register online votes for the Construction Computing Award

Tomorrow (10 November) is the last day to register online votes for the Construction Computing Awards 2009, promoted by BTC, the UK-based publisher of Construction Computing, CADuser and other magazines.

Back in August, when nominations opened I blogged on ExtranetEvolution.com about there being no category for Web 2.0 type applications. Since then, I have been thinking further about this, and I have come up with five reasons why we don’t yet have any awards in this field….

First, the fact that the Construction Computing website (and those of its sister publications) doesn’t have a blog, a Twitter account, an RSS feed, discussion forum or bookmarking tools might be a clue that social media isn’t really on BTC’s radar (see post). Other publishers targeting the business-to-business market – and the architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) and property sectors in particular (eg: Emap, Reed, UBM) – have all been revamping their websites and offering new online services to build stronger connections with their readerships, but we currently have no construction IT publication or organisation that ‘walks the Web 2.0 talk’.

Second, for Construction Computing readers to vote on Web 2.0 applications they really should be using them, and despite the enthusiasm of the leading media channels, individuals and companies in the AEC sector have not been the most enthusiastic adopters of the tools and technologies. Instead, some organisations have gone out of their way to restrict or even completely block access to some platforms. So, individual ignorance or scepticism, combined with corporate control freakery, might also limit meaningful voting.

Third, the success of awards often depends on capturing the interest and attention of the relevant industry organisations, companies, software vendors and other potential sponsors. At this early stage in AEC adoption of Web 2.0, few software vendors have emerged with marketing/PR budgets big enough to justify involvement, the effects of the recession are still being felt, and ongoing unease about Web 2.0 (see 2. above) may limit some corporate enthusiasm.

Fourth, forget anonymous judges, behind-closed-doors decision-making and closed voting processes. Web 2.0 awards should naturally be decided based upon the transparent “wisdom of crowds”. Open nomination of candidates would be a start, perhaps using online polls to decide upon a final shortlist. Publishing the names of those voting might deter some people from participating, but equally it could encourage others pleased to be associated with the company/application/product they’ve endorsed. And I think revealing the final voting figures during or immediately after any awards (so that we all know how much the winners won by, or how narrowly runners-up missed out) would be good. (The Webbys, for example, have a People’s Voice Award, which I think is a good model)

Traditional awards programmes often involve a lavish awards dinner: lots of tables of ten getting dressed up before sitting down to a three-course meal and getting drunk networking while watching a steady succession of awards being spread around many of the table sponsors (for the Construction Computing awards “Tables of 10 are available from £1695″ – ouch!). Perhaps new technologies deserve a new approach? Just as web 2.0 has adopted the informal ‘unconference’ type approach, perhaps we should be thinking about more informal awards ‘unceremonies’, maybe with an element of ‘tweet-up’, complete with live-blogging and other audience involvement?

Having worked in the IT sector of the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector, it is

Having worked in the IT sector of the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector, it is only natural that I should look at how AEC-oriented IT companies and the publications that cover them use social media tools such as Twitter. For example, back in January I blogged about the how the main UK AEC publications were deploying social media, and in July I wrote about the Web 2.0 presence of collaboration technology vendors; some (like Asite) were increasingly active, but most were – and are – still experimenting.

Opening the Twitter channel for media contact

Talking to AEC businesses about social media – either as a consultant or as a speaker – I point out that Twitter can be a good way for industry people to follow and receive insights from industry journalists, many of whom have become regular users of Twitter (a point echoed by my fellow PR Liz Male at Be2camp@WB, and by WorldArchitectureNews journalist Niki May Clark at the CIMCIG/IBP debate, both last month), and who may use Twitter as a source of ideas, to get feedback on news stories, etc – demonstrating how Twitter can open dialogues.

Not all journalists are on Twitter, though, even in some of the more IT-specific UK media outlets. For example, I couldn’t find a Twitterer at BTC’s Construction Computing or CADUser. Searches for editor David Chadwick found lots of other David Chadwicks but not the man himself (though he could quite possibly be using a different ‘nom de Tweet’!).

Everyone has to start somewhere though. And judging from her latest Editor’s patch article it seems Alison Jones, who edits the ITShowcaseNews newsletter, is learning about Twitter and taking a few tentative steps. When I spoke to her earlier today she explained it was still early days and the first ITShowcase Twitter account has yet to be properly publicised or resourced (just six tweets, only two followers – one me! – and not following anyone back – yet). However, she added, this will change very soon as the company integrates Twitter into its other communications.

10 weeks and 1 day Sunday, November first was Kami’s 10 week mark that he has been in Broward

10 weeks and 1 day

Sunday, November first was Kami’s 10 week mark that he has been in Broward Transitional Center. And his case has officially been sitting in Falls Church, Virginia at the BIA for 2 months as of yesterday. The Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) is the highest administrative body for interpreting and applying immigration laws. Generally, the Board does not conduct courtroom proceedings – it decides appeals by conducting a “paper review” of cases. There are around 15 Board members who are in charge of final decisions on cases. Unless someone knows a high power politician, Kami’s fate is in their hands.

We have decided that some outside pressure on BIA will assist in speeding up the process of getting his case reopened. We figure right now, his case is sitting in a pile with hundreds of other cases and when the committee members finally do come across his, to them, it is just another name and alien number. BIA’s own website states:

“The immigration court system receives a staggering number of cases – approximately 271,000 a year. Due to an inefficient adjudication process, the Board has not been able to keep up with its appellate caseload. Despite a steady increase in the number of Board members over the last several years, the Board has accrued a backlog of more than 56,000 cases.”

Sending letters of recommendation to reopen the case and to end the deportation order is something we feel may greatly assist our efforts. We have already asked some powerful people to write and send letters out, but I feel that letters from all the people who are supporting him in the cause to FREE KAMI is just as important and beneficial. We are urgently asking anyone who pleases to write a letter. Write a letter about how you know Kami, what he has done and plead with them to end his deportation. So far, nothing seems to be enough; maybe with outside pressure on them, it will be. If you would like to assist, include his full name: Kambiz Barzini and alien number 96098731. Here is the address:

Office of the Chief Clerk
Board of Immigration Appeals
5107 Leesburg Pike, Suite 2000
Falls Church, VA 22041

As we continue on each day for the Fight for Kami’s life, we continue to thank you all for your love and support. Continue to spread the word…

68 days

As president Obama said in his inaugural address, “We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this earth. We know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness.”

As we continue on in the fight for Kami’s life, we must never forget that this is happening every single day in our country. We are a nation of nations and we are forgetting all the great work and accomplishments that immigrants have brought to America. It is because of these great people that our country flourishes.

Just to name a few of the great: “One of the greatest examples is Albert Einstein, born in Germany. The U.S. could not have developed a nuclear weapon without Enrico Fermi from Italy and Niels Bohr from Denmark. John von Neauman from Hungary created the modern computer. Jerry Lang from Taiwan co-founded Yahoo. In 2007, 2 of 3 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for Medicine were immigrant scientists from Italy and the United Kingdom working in the United States. In 2008, 3 of 4 of the highest-paid corporate executives were immigrants from India and Lebanon. President Obama’s own father was an immigrant from Kenya, and his stepfather was from Indonesia (Roberts).”

And then there is Kami from Iran. The contributions that he has made to our nation have been endless. His work with coaching and wrestling has been intense. But more than that; as Mike Brown said, “he is the guy that you want in your corner”. Whether it is involved with sports or personally he has had a profound impact on students, coaches, and friends. For those of you lucky enough to have met Kami, you would understand when I say he is special. He is unlike anyone I’ve ever known. And it is the truth when I say you don’t meet people like him often.

We have a tough fight ahead of us but I know together, we can all make a difference. Keep him in your prayers and continue to spread the word.

Here are a few articles that if you have time you should take a look at:

AP IMPACT: Immigrants Face Detention, Few Rights – ABC News This is a good article. It gives a little hint of what they are actually going through in there. I sent this article to Kami and he had all his roommates in BTC read it. They were all making copies and showing everyone. He said everyone was mad because it was exactly what they were living; what they were going through.

Marine dad deportation: U.S. Marine’s dad is awaiting deportation to Hungary for missing a court hearing — South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

First, I just want to thank you ALL for your love and support. The sites hits skyrocketed just yesterday. Please keep spreading the word and maybe, just maybe this will finally be our answer.

Many of you are wondering how to get in contact with Kami. Well they definatley don’t make it any easier for him in there. Broward Transitional Center is basically a jail with a little lighter restrictions.

Kami gets visitations once every two weeks. They are an hour and a half long with a maximum of four visitors at one time. They are not through a glass window; but you cannot sit next to one another. You must sit across, and you are not able to give or hand them anything. No cells phones are allowed through the door; just your I.D. and keys (and that is after you get a searched with a metal detector).

He cannot use the internet and has no computer access, but he can receive mail so if you would like to say something to him or just write, here is the address. Must be written as followed:

Broward Transitional Center

Attn: Kambiz Barzini #96098731

3900 N. Powerline Road

Pompano Beach, FL 33073

He cannot receive any phone calls, under any circumstances. He is able to place calls; however the odds of him getting through are slim. With over 600 other detainees, there are only about 20-25 phones. They receive calling cards (which they have to purchase) from Evercom. And if you look up Evercom reviews, you will find that the entire system is screwed up. Here is just one site focused on Evercom’s bad services - http://evercom-correctional-billing-services.pissedconsumer.com/ When he does finally get through, he has twenty-minutes of talk time and then its over – that is all if the phone doesn’t cutoff on you in the middle of your conversation…

So if you can even begin to fathom it, think of what he is going through. He is locked in this “jail” with little to no contact between anyone that he knows and loves. I’ve told him about the website and the number of people he has supporting him outside of those walls and I think that really helps get him through his day. I hope this helps and thank you all so very much for your love and support. Kami loves you and appreciates all that everyone is doing. Keep spreading the word.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

With Kami’s permission and his approval to write this, here is for those of you who don’t already know…..

I APOLOGIZE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DIDN’T GET THE CHANCE TO READ WHAT HAPPENED, BUT AFTER TALKING TO AN ATTORNEY, I WAS ADVISED TO REMOVE ANY TALK ABOUT KAMI’S CASE.

Some of you know him from Missouri Valley College which he attended; and others of you know him while he was working at Oklahoma State University in the wrestling department. He is published in the book Cowboy Up by Kim Parish for his wresting talent and coaching abilities. Many others know him from American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida where he was recruited as wrestling coach. Over the years he has met many amazing people all over the country. Anyone who knows Kami would know that there isn’t a worse person for this to have happened to.

Many weeks ago on August 23, Kami and I were pulled over for a broken headlight. They detained him and took him to Broward County Jail (which they were never supposed to do in the first place) where they later transferred him to Broward Transitional Center for immigrants. He has been in there and they are trying to deport him back to Iran. He needs safety and refuge.

So far we have sent a request to the main Board of Immigrations Appeals in Falls Church, Virginia for the case to be reopened. They received it on September first and we are just waiting. Although we expect and want nothing more than to keep him here in the United States, we are aware and prepared for anything else to come our way. We had hopes to have an option of sending him to Germany (where his family is and to keep him safe from Iran), but German consulate has replied and denied a visa or citizenship saying that because he never renewed his visa (when he was here in America) that they ordered him a final deportation and will not accept him back.

So here we are… as of today October 28, 2009…he has been stuck in that “jail for immigrants” as Kami calls it, for 66 days.

I’m posting all of this, not only to inform everyone, but to also ask for help. If anyone knows anyone, or anything that might help, we can use it. We have done and tried everything from writing letters, to calling and talking to lawyer after lawyer, and trying to get the right politician involved. Nothing seems to be sufficient. Maybe if the word spreads enough, it will be in the hands of someone who can do something; someone with power.

“To deprive a man of his natural liberty and to deny to him the ordinary amenities of life is worse then starving the body; it is starvation of the soul, the dweller in the body.” -Gandhi (thanks Anita)

BINNENKORT MEER MET SUIKER ALS CASE-STUDY OM DIT ALLES TE STAVEN VOORAF: Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghan

“Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for third-world producers, and a hell of a deal for first-world bureaucrats.”

“Starbucks is pushing ahead with a billboard, poster and press campaign promoting its move to make all of its “espresso-based beverages” – effectively every latte, cappucino and mocha whipped up by its baristas in the UK – from Fairtrade-certified coffee bean suppliers.”

bron: The Guardian

“As Starbucks fully embraced Fairtrade coffee, several roasters in the UK complained about the Fairtrade Foundation’s proposed new administrative guidelines, which the roasters will complain puts too heavy a paperwork burden on them. Roasters have always complained that the Foundation is ‘over-bureaucratic’ – the Foundation in return always claims that its audit trail has to be absolutely accurate.”

Eerste Wereld-bureaucratie, op maat van de allergrootsten.

“One small roaster in the north of England complained that big operations, such as Starbucks, can deploy dedicated staff to handling the Fairtrade paperwork, but that a tiny operation such as his cannot do so.

He said: “They are going to disqualify many small roasters from working with Fairtrade at all. Big roasters have the staff to handle this – but for the rest of us, this now gives the perverse situation of Fairtrade only wanting to work with little operators overseas, and big ones here.”

alternatieve handel of liefdadigheid?

Lack of profitabilty drives banana farmers away from Fairtrade.

Of is fairtrade structuren veranderen?

The following is an interesting post on Russia as more of an energy corporation than a country.

I agree, on BTC, that demonstrating Georgia’s vulnerability by making it vulnerable is useful in debunking the myth of ’supply diversification away from Russia’ and it’s an attempt to put another nail in the Nabucco’s coffin.

But Robb is talking about Iran supplying Nabucco as if it’s a foregone conclusion. Now, Nabucco isn’t going to work without Iran, but including Iran would mean the US deciding it’s the lesser of two evils (the other evil being Russia).

It’s unlikely that the US would include Iran, because this isn’t meant to be a commercial endeavour – it’s purely political. In the meantime, the real damage Russia is doing to Nabucco is (preventively) encouraging the flow of Iranian gas eastward, with the signing of the Iran-Pakistan (and possibly India) pipeline.

The STTACC annual state conference was hosted by Olympic College on August 13 & 14, 2009. It was held at Kiana Lodge, a gorgeously landscaped location on property owned by the Suquamish Tribe, near Poulsbo, WA. Chief Sealth’s grave is nearby.

This year’s theme was It Ain’t Easy Being Green. Dr. Kim McNamara, OC Dean of Student Development, talked with attendees about taking small steps to create big change. We held group discussions at our tables on creative ways to “RE” do things at work and at home.

Suggestions for work practices included reducing paper usage by implementing campus-wide default double-sided printing, replacing toxic products, and reforming purchasing procedures. Other suggestions were to use rechargeable batteries, recycle scrap paper into notepads, use “eco-fonts”, investigate subsidized bus passes, adopt eco-landscaping practices, and use natural products for cleaning.

Suggestions for going green at home included using tankless water heaters, using earth-friendly grocery bags (sit on your bags so you remember to take them into the store with you– or bring your husband along to run back out to the car to get them), use goats for landscaping, do laundry during off-peak energy hours, and opt for paperless statements and transactions.

Our afternoon speaker was Dr. Richard Strand, Dean for Business and Technology at OC and certified StrengthsQuest educator. His engaging presentation was entitled The Power of Positivity, and he shared ideas and research about how positivity is peace of mind and a matter of choice. He told the following Native American story, The Wolves Within.

The Wolves Within
A grandson told of his anger at a schoolmate who had done him an injustice. Grandfather said: “Let me tell you a story.” “I, too, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But, hate wears you down and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times. It is as if there are two wolves inside me: one is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way. But the other wolf is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights with everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of then try to dominate my spirit.” The boy looked intently into his grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?” The grandfather solemnly replied, “The one I feed.”

Dr Strand shared several book titles, How Full is Your Bucket, Negaholics No More, Geography of Bliss, and Vital Friends, as well as a website, positivepsychology.org.

During dinner, the Northwest Ravens performed Native American songs with drumming and dancing, and awards were presented.

After dinner, Certified Laughter Leader, Karen Schneider talked to us about the many health benefits of laughter. Next, she had us gather in a circle and practice a variety of (pretty funny!) laughter techniques, and we adjourned our first day of the conference smiling and energized.

On Friday, after breakfast and a designated networking period, a woman from Living Voices, an historical theater group which uses a “unique combination of theater, video and live interaction”, performed Northwest Passages. Northwest Passages is a fictional story– based on actual historical events– about a young Swedish woman’s experiences in growing up in the Pacific Northwest during the time of World War One.

Next, we divided into groups according to our work classifications to discuss a series of questions regarding training funds, committee recruitment, administrative support, and fund-raising. We also talked about RCW 28B.15.558 (the Revised Code of Washington) that covers Washington State waiver of tuition and fees for State Employees http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=28B.15.558.

We concluded the conference with a business meeting, in which the motions to change the name of the STTACC quarterly publication from The Plain Brown Rapper to the strictly online STTACC Chat, and to revise the existing fee structure to a format which is based on numbers of employees at individual institutions, and 2010 officers were announced.

The 2010 STTACC conference will be hosted by Community Colleges of Spokane on August 19th and 20th of next year. The theme will be Tee Up for Learning!
