Well this is a darn cool day.  I’ve been a wino for, like, a really, really long time (sounds kinda bad doesn’t it?) and I never knew about Nouveau Beaujolais Day until now.  I mean, I’ve always known about Beaujolais.  It’s a lovely, light, drinkable red from the Beaujolais region of France (duh!) made from the Gamay variety of grape.  In my experience, it’s a bit lighter and drier than the spicier Gamay Noir varietals produced here in B.C. (one of my favorites of which is from Mt. Boucherie, and the other one is from Sandhill).  It’s very pleasant and kind of … inconsequential in aspect, which makes it thoroughly dangerous.

The Nouveau Beaujolais is an early winter wine that is traditionally released on the 3rd Thursday in November.  That was yesterday.  All over the world, people have been racing to be the first to serve and drink this light-bodied, put-a-spring-in-your-step, bottle of happiness.  The guy at the liquor store said to me, “oh, you want the grape juice and bubble gum wine?”.  Hmph.  Well, it’s no Amarone, but damn!  It is hella-drinkable and thoroughly enjoyable and perfectly pretty.  I have never seen such purple wine.  Okay, so there’s a slight similarity to grape juice.

The thing that’s cool about Nouveau Beaujolais Day is that it’s this crazy worldwide wine fest that happens in the dead of winter when people are sort of thinking that wine is done for the year.  Not that it’s ever done, but let’s face it – who goes on a wine tour of the Okanagan in the middle of November?  National Beaujolais Day has been described as one of “the most frivolous and animated rituals in the wine world”. Cool!  According to Wine Spectator, I am one lucky cookie, since I get to blog about this delightful libation this year – apparently 2009 is set to be one of the Beaujolais’ best vintages ever. Sweet!

Mommessin 2009

Yesterday was a good day to come home and drink a bottle of wine.  Or half a bottle.  There were two varieties released in BC Liquor Stores yesterday: the Beaujolais Villages Nouveau – Mommesin 2009, and the Beaujolais Nouveau – Duboeuf Paper Label 2009 and I contemplated opening both bottles and having a drink off, but my tasting partner, P, got thoroughly soused at an early Christmas lunch and was entirely useless to me on the tasting front.  So I settled for drinking half a bottle of the Mommessin with a few slices of French Batard from Bond Bond’s bakery, and a version of Portuguese Sausage and Kale soup that I made in my slow cooker while watching the world’s cheesiest television show.  It was a fine way to end the day.

Oh, you want to know what the t.v. show was?  It was the recent remake of “V”. Terrible.  But oh so good.

What?  You want the soup recipe?  Well that’s just pushing it.  But here you go:

1. Sauté  1/2 large onion (diced), 3 cloves of garlic (minced) and 3 Portuguese Chorico Sausages (2 hot, 1 sweet, sliced 1/4″) in a heavy sauce pot.

2. Add some chopped mushrooms, s & p.

3. When starting to brown and caramelize on bottom of pan, deglaze with a little dry sherry or red wine.

4. Toss in the 1/2 large can of diced tomatoes you had left over from the casserole you made at the same time, a couple handfuls of fresh chopped basil and 1 tbsp of dried oregano.

5. Put in slow cooker.  Add 1 litre of ham stock that you made from this year’s giant Easter Ham Hock and kept in the freezer all summer long.

6. Add 2 – 3 cups of water because you think there’s not enough liquid.

7. 3-4 drops of Liquid Smoke, no more.

8. Chop 8-9 red nugget potatoes into little tiny soup-size pieces and mix into the glop in the pot.

9. Top with a few sprigs of parsley ’cause they’re in the fridge and then fill the pot to the top with coarsely chopped kale (I used one really big bunch).

10. Turn on the slow cooker and set it to cook all day on low.  When you get home, give it a stir and turn it to high while you do your chores and heat the Batard in the oven and … voila!  Perfect Stormy Night Food that pairs reasonably well with your evening’s wine assignment (ok, probably an Touriga Nacional would have been better – it’s a darn stout soup – but the Nouveau did nicely in a pinch).

Mas o que me livra da vergonha alheia de ter nascido em tal década é que tipos: eu só NASCI não me DESENVOLVI nela, saca?

O que eu quero dizer é que em 1990 eu apenas era um supereguinho que “andava” no braço de Papai Superego e Mamãe Superego, ou seja, não tinha muito espaço para fazer e acontecer. Não ia nas vagas oitentistas. Tudo o que “fiz” de tosco nessa época, não foi diretamente minha culpa e sim, dos beus pais.

Há!

Ao contrário de bim, as pessoas que estavam no auge de sua puberdade e/ou tinham todo um desenvolvimento cognitivo próprio adquirido em outras décadas, ah, essas pessoas pegaram jacaré nas ondas dos anos 80 e deixaram um exemplo para a humanidade do que tipos, você NÃO  deve fazer.

E aí você vai olhar pra mim e, coçando a cabeça e dando de ombros, me perguntar:

Cê falando das ombreiras Seu Superego?

Dos mullets e dos topetes a là ninho de pitassilgo?

Das cores CONSTRANGEDORAS: rosa shock e verde limão?

Dos permanentes?

Do batom cor de VIOLETA?

“Back To Basics” por Wladimyr Cruz

Conheci os Carbonas, se não em engano, no show do Marky Ramone na Broadway. Fui neste show com o João Veloso Jr. (White Frogs) e lá conheci o Melvin, acho. A partir dai, conheci a banda, e voltando pra Santos/SP, onde morava na época, resolvi promover um show da banda por aqui, em parceria com um amigo – Matheus Krempel – curiosamente, o lançamento do “Back To Basics”. O show foi um sucesso, pelo que eu me lembre, e abriu as porteiras do Carbona no litoral paulista.
O disco em si virou uma praga, junto com o “Running Out Of Sense” do Holly TREE era o ‘hors concours’ da garotada da época. “Macarroni Girl”, ao lado de “Hey@ Stop it” e “We Build Our Own Way” (do Street Bulldogs) talvez foram as grandes canções da cena independente em sua virada de século, ao menos em popularidade.
A arte chupada dos Ramones, ao invés de soar pedante, dava norte a quem caçava algo no estilo no Brasil, além é claro, de carimbar a antropofagia pop que permeia todo o álbum, com referências a vida pessoal dos integrantes e ao Rio De Janeiro.
“Back To Basics” influenciou uma geração de bandas bubble-gum, e não fica longe de clássicos internacionais do estilo.

Por que “Back To Basics”?

Foi o disco que definiu, completamente, o que é fazer punk ‘bubble gum’ no Brasil.

“Back To Basics” por Melvin Ribeiro (Carbona)

Nesse mês de Novembro o nosso segundo disco, “Back to Basics”, está fazendo 10 anos. Por mais que esse texto seja comemorativo, acho que posso pular toda a parte sobre como não parece ter passado tanto tempo, né?

Nesse instante coloquei o disco pra rolar aqui, pela primeira vez em muito mas muito tempo mesmo. No Carbona normalmente é o Pedro que fica ouvindo os discos pra sempre. Eu e o Henrique ouvimos bem menos depois de gravado. Eu provavelmente faço isso com medo de ouvir de novo e achar que está tudo ruim.

Mas a primeira impressão  é a melhor possível! Gostei muito do jeito como o disco ainda soa! Então, um pouco de História e histórias agora…

Em 99 o Carbona não tinha completado dois anos ainda, fazia shows quase todo final de semana, já tinha feito a tour nos Estados Unidos e Canadá e lançado o “Go Carbona” por lá, estava naquela fase de topar todo tipo de roubada ainda e toda essa atuação tinha levado a gente a ser bastante conhecido/respeitado já.

Por incrível que pareça a demoramos muito a chegar a São Paulo (por alguma razão parecia que as pessoas não iam gostar…). Já tínhamos tocado em Curitiba e em outros lugares e, numa viagem para assistir o show do Marky Ramone na Broadway (tínhamos conhecido o Marky na turnê americana), reconhecemos o André Tor do Zumbis do Espaço, figura central para toda a história do “Back to Basics”. O Pedro tinha comprado o CD do Zumbis num show em Belo Horizonte com o Dead Fish e Zumbis era trilha certa das nossas viagens. Quem conhece o Tor imagina que ele foi no mínimo bastante desconfiado quando fomos abordá-lo, mas ficou com o CD e um tempo depois retomou o contato.

O André já tinha a 13 records e além do Zumbis estava lançando o primeiro Street Bulldogs, um dos discos que mais vendeu na história do selo. Ele se interessou em lançar o “Go Carbona” no Brasil mas o disco já estava na fábrica, pronto pra ser lançado pelo meu selo com o pessoal do ACK, a Traidores Records.

Começamos a tocar com o Zumbis direto e o André soube que já tínhamos algumas gravações de depois do primeiro disco. Mais do que isso, o Henrique tinha acabado de compor algumas das nossas melhores músicas. O André achou que já era hora de lançar nosso segundo disco e fez a proposta: juntar as duas sessões (uma para uma coletânea da Barulho, outra de um split com o Wacky Kids que acabou nunca saindo) e registrar mais uma com as tais músicas novas. Além de todos esses méritos, o cara teve um ainda maior: conseguiu a muito custo convencer que a capa deveria ser retirada de uma camiseta nossa que homenageava o logotipo dos Ramones. A gente achava que a associação direta com os Grandes Mestres ia parecer muito pretensiosa e tentou propor outras idéias, mas acabamos convencidos. De qualquer jeito, era apenas uma coletânea de gravações, né?

A resposta é não. Não era só mais uma coletânea. O “Back to Basics” acabou sendo o disco nosso que mais vendeu, ajudado pela quantidade gigante de shows que fizemos aquela época, a distribuição da 13 e a popularidade do formato CD. Produzido pelo mesmo Stanley Zvaig que fez o “Go Carbona” e o “Mighty Panorama…”, o Back trouxe algumas músicas que viraram favoritas do nosso público e obrigatórias no nosso set list nos anos seguintes: “Macarroni Girl” (nossa música mais conhecida da fase em inglês), “Lolly Pop, Lemon Drops”, “All My Friends are Falling in Love” e “Alarm Clock”.

#FATOS SOBRE O DISCO#

* O lançamento do disco em São Paulo foi no Hangar, num grande show em conjunto com as maiores bandas da época (Zumbis do Espaço, Blind Pigs e Holly Tree) na primeira vez que o Hangar atingiu sua lotação máxima. MUITO QUENTE!

* As fotos desse show foram parar no encarte do nosso disco seguinte, “Straight out of the Bailey Show”.

* Foi o último disco da gente gravado ainda em ADAT, que era o equipamento mais comum nos estúdios da época. O ADAT era uma fita de supervídeo, um formato mais evoluído de videocassete. Só que resolvemos começar a gravação do disco numa Sexta-Feira à noite, e descobrimos que o estúdio estava sem fitas. Fomos até um posto de gasolina e compramos fitas de videocassete mesmo. A qualidade foi a mesma! O único perigo era demorar demais e a fita perder de qualidade, por isso o disco foi mixado logo depois do término das gravações.

* As fotos do encarte do Back to Basics foram tiradas em um show tributo ao Nirvana no finado Ballroom, palco de algumas apresentações memoráveis nossas aqui no Rio.

* “Metal Princess” foi uma versão de “Little Princess”, da minha outra banda na época, o HillValleys. “Are You Like I Used to Be?” foi um presente do Nervoso, que na época era do Beach Lizards e Acabou La Tequila e hoje está em carreira solo. “Hell of a Trick”, gravada com a participação da Vivi Staple, vocalista das Staples, foi um presente do Henrique para o Staples que acabamos gravando também.

* “All My Friends are Falling in Love” foi escrita pelo Fabio Seidl (Ack) em minha homenagem, e a primeira vez que ele mostrou foi no dia do nosso primeiro show “oficial”, no Empório (Rio). Passei no estúdio para buscar o amplificador, era ensaio do ACK, Fabio parou e mostrou a música. Durante muito tempo encerrou nossos shows.

* “Eve of Destruction” foi gravada ao vivo num ensaio que gerou as faixas extras do “Go Carbona” gringo. É um original country (Barry McGuire) mas a gente conheceu primeiro na versão do Dickies mesmo.

* O mesmo Fabio que escreveu “All My Friends…” é o Seidl de “Seidl Doesn’t Have All Ramones Albuns”. Segundo o Henrique, não valia ter o “All the Stuff” (disco que juntava em um cd o primeiro e o segundo do Ramones e em outra edição o terceiro e quarto). Na versão mais memorável dessa música, durante o lançamento do “Back to Basics” no Ballroom, Henrique cantava a música enquanto Fabio gritava “Oh, yes I Have” no microfone dos backings e ia tirando de uma mochila um a um todos os discos do Ramones.

* O disco faz menção a três lugares do Rio “clássicos” para o Carbona: o Empório (citada em “Rock n’Roll Freakshow”, palco de metade dos nossos shows no início), o Baixo Gávea (B.G. em “Are You Like I Used to Be?”) e a pelada na Lagoa (“All My Friends are Falling in Love”).

* Para uma reprensagem do disco chegamos a fazer uma capa nova, com uma guitarra Mosrite. Essa capa aparece no encarte do “…Bailey Show” mas acabou nunca sendo prensada.

* “Ocidental Accidental” é anterior ao Carbona, da época que o Henrique fez uma banda em Curitiba.

* “Tivoli Park” foi um parque de diversões da nossa infância no Rio (ficava na Lagoa). O nome foi tirado de um parque com o mesmo nome na Dinamarca.

* O livro mencionado na letra de “Are You Like I Used to Be?” é o obrigatório “Mate-me Por Favor”. Leia!!!

* A “Macarroni Girl” existe e é nossa amiga até hoje!

Finally the epic “Chew” for your viewing pleasure.

“Chew” Materials – Bubble Gum, Plaster, Body/Performance

I created this piece as my final project of my Undergrad at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Influenced by Janine Antoni and her notion that she must have an experience with the sculpture in order for the viewer to have an experience with it. The experience that I had with the materials in “Chew” relate to the theories of Anti-Form, working with the physical properties of the objects/materials and how I can manipulate them with body/intimacy.

My mom watches Dr. Oz to get healthier.  She has irritable bowel syndrome, and on one of the shows he says what foods can cause problems. Which is basically carbonated drinks and fried foods. That’s pretty much all my mom eats/drinks. Now she refuses to stop eating/drinking those things.  Basically, my mom wants to get healthier but doesn’t want to take the proper steps to get there.  -jeenyus1

Apparently, because of him there has been a serious influx of women mistaking indegestion for a heart attack because he claimed that 200 women died last year from misdiagnosing themselves.   Unfortunately, now my ER doctor buddy has like 2 women a day coming in thinking they are having a heart attack after a pizza lunch or something.  What an asshole. The only thing he’s offering is fear.

Thanks to my DVR, I don’t have the problem of watching commercials very much.  But some might sneak in during live sporting events.  The new Snuggie one with the synthesizer theme song and they’re raising the roof throughout the commercial is pretty ridiculous.  “Raising the roof” hasn’t been appropriate since 1998. And they’ve got it all over this commercial like it’s the new dance craze.

Know what pisses me off? Telemarketers that call you and put you on HOLD.  Seriously? You’re going to call me with some annoying sales pitch, and you want me to hold the line while you find someone to give it to me? -andyiceberg

It’s really about romanticizing the era. Theres a lot of nostalgia to be had on that show for us older folks. Not only all the accounts that the agency collects (whom all but a handful are companies bankrupted long ago, like Martinsons coffee, the Dumont network, and stuff like that) but in the way people treated each other, how men treated women. Also, how you could slap some strangers kid in public and it was okay because the kid was being a douchebag, or how you went on a picnic and left your trash piled up and drove away. It’s a window to a different time in the world that some people view as a better time.

Only when they are upset at people for finding them unattractive and they get all high and mighty about how everyone is beautiful on the inside or some garbage.  Hey fat people, you are not entitled to other peoples infatuation because Oprah or any equally powerful fat/ugly person says you are pretty when they’ve never met you.  Additionally, some people think Melissa Joan Hart is unattractive, and she’s not fat, so it might just be the way you look, not just your fatness.  Thanks.

Rishab is 19 months old. His world is still limited to cartoons, toys & few people he meets(ofcourse only few important onces are remembered). Usually after getting up from the bed, he keeps staring at us or keep quite for 10-15 minutes before he gets in to his normal mood. Yesterday afternoon immediately after he woke up, He was in a pleasant mood as if he was doing something and started talking to us. He said ta-tta (that means pluto a character in disney cartoon)

“Babba” (that means bubble gum, again in one of the cartoon pluto eats bubble gum). He has never tasted/tried a bubblegum yet, “Aash..” (that means ice..ice cube to be specific). He used all these words in succession.

Looks like Rishab had a dream and he saw Pluto, bubble gum, and ice cream in his dream…

What a beautiful & contented world… He just desires for such simple things in his dreams. Thats why he has so much of happiness.

WHY BOTHER?

This is a rant. This is a rant about X-Factor, so make your exit now if you can’t be bothered to read on.

I am SO sick and tired of everyone giving Danyl a hard time! And precisely why?

A)   He’s a”bully”

B)   He’s gay/bisexual

C)   He’s more hated than Hitler…

D)   He’s “cocky”

FUCK OFF.  Just fuck RIGHT off. The problem is Danyl is f-AMAZING. He can sing circles round everyone. He came out and blew the judges away. I’m sure they were all wetting themselves hoping they would get him. But seeing as it’s Simon’s show, he of course got him. And the rest…well I mean Louis got the groups…again. But see a certain little green eyed monster going by the name of Cheryl Cole decided that she didn’t like him. And since she shits gold, clearly everyone must follow like cattle to the slaughterhouse. Everyone started bitching about him about how he was bully (calling the kettle black ay Cheryl, Danni)…

Then of course Dannii who is only got the job because she shares the same last name as her sister decides to out him to the public! How INAPPROPRIATE. How would she like it if someone just blurted out that she had a massive yeast infection cottage cheeseing all over the place. But then afterwards been like, “well we were talking/joking about it earlier, so everything’s completely fine!” Of course nobody cares if she has a yeast infection or not, but it’s still personal information that shouldn’t be shared with like 10 million people.

What really gets me is how Miss Cole was always goin’ on about how he was “cocky”. I’m sorry what? I mean she classes herself as some kind of singer (cough Fight for this love, I’d fight to NOT hear that song again) then she should flippin’ know that who you are on stage is different to who you are normally. Beyonce (lookin’ fab in her red lingerie number by the way) has an alter ego named “Sasha (Fierce)” but nobody accuses her of being cocky. She is CONFIDENT. There is a DIFFERENCE.

I find that Brits are all about their humble pie and not being too proud. Hubris is a bad thing, yes. But taking pride in who you are/what you do/what you’ve achieved is natural and GOOD for you, like vitamins.  Nevertheless  Britain is choc full of these “making the star” shows but they don’t really want a star. They want builder Joe you can do his bit then get on with it. NEWSFLASH BRITAIN: THAT’S NOT WHAT A STAR IS! A star has QUALITY, the X-Factor even. They’re supposed to be flashy, charismatic, and most of all GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO! If you don’t want that, then WHY BOTHER? ?!?!?!?!!

Alguém sugeriu que fechassem o álbum com Twist and Shout, [...] “uma verdadeira destruidora de laringes”, como diria George Martin [...] e era John quem cantava. Se ele tinha condições? Ninguém, nem mesmo ele, sabia. Ele exigira demais a voz o dia inteiro, levando-a ao limite.

John abriu uma caixa de leite e bebeu ruidosamente. Sem falar nada, tirou a camisa, ajeitou-as nas costas de uma cadeira, foi até o microfone e fez um breve sinal com a cabeça: estavam prontos.

O vocal de Twist and Shout foi cantado por entre os dentes, com o rosto contorcido [...] E doía ao ouvir, também.

C’mon and twist a little closer foi transformado em um som estridente, agonizado e demoníaco, no último refrão, a guturalidade torturante mascarou todas as palavras e Paul, admirado, gritou Hey!, comemorando o milagre de terem cruzado a linha de chegada.

Ui, que agora ninguém segura nois bee!

Seja lá o for que a imprensa esperava deles, ela estava completamente despreparada para o que estava prestes a acontecer.

“Vocês vão cantar alguma coisa pra gente?”

The user is stimulated both physically and mentally. XTC has the ability to suppress exhaustion which doesn’t mean that the fatigue is gone but that it is only masked. After the rush, the feeling of fatigue returns more heavily. At the same time, perception intensifies. Under the influence of XTC, people tend to get more intimate with others. Effects generally appear within 20-60 minutes. The first hour after that the effects are felt the most. After 4-6 hours the effects are gone but some people still feel the effects the following day. That can be a nice feeling, but also an empty and depressed feeling. A depressive or miserable mood can last for days. Side effects are tension in the jaws, palpitations (rapid or irregular heart beat), a dry mouth and throat, nausea and shortness of breath. Sometimes, movements are difficult to co-ordinate. These negative effects can lead to panic attacks, and are quality and dose dependent and will vary depending on sensibility, mood, expectations and the health of the individual user. Last but not least, the environment can also influence the effects.

Probably shouldn’t try this at home…

My jaw is soar as I cram a third piece of Bubble Yum in my already over crammed mouth.  The sugar is slow fading away along with the taste oh… in the 10 seconds after I first start chewing.  The gum is now a pink gob of magnificent possibilities.  I stick out my tongue and begin to slowly build a little pink bubble and then I exhale at a calm pace.  The pink gum balloon begins to grow and my eyes get bigger.  I get in a defense stance ready to fend off possible attacks by others eager to pop my trophy.  Now the bubble is the size of my head, and then just then…the entire thing is all over my face deflated like my moment of temporary glory.  I continue picking every sticky bit off my face.  Ahh the days of blowing bubbles with bubble gum.  Wait what am I saying, I just did this last week. 

Now for a bit of instruction.  Chewing gum and bubble gum are two different things.  All pros use Bubble Gum to blow bubbles.  The reason, quantity and elasticity.  The key to blowing an amazing bubble is two or three pieces of gum.  The hidden secret is to wash your gum.  Yes I said wash your gum.  I had a teacher in 5th grade, and her husband worked for Bazooka Gum.  She explained you had to chew out all the sugar or wash it in water with your hands.  Sugars are in tiny crystal form within bubble gum, and they burst your bubble, literally.  The other key is to make sure you use your tongue properly as shown below.

Now as for some of my favorites, I would have to say I miss Hubba Bubba.  Then there is my all time favorite Bubblicious Cherry Cola.  I really wish it would come back.  Bubble Yum came out with grape which became a close second to bubble gum original flavor and Cherry Cola.  Litte known fact about the why the pink one is called original flavor? Walter Diemer invented gum on accident and when he started to sell the gum he only had a pink color die and one flavor to work with.  The real “original” as we call it today was tootie-fruitie.

There are also other ways to package gum as we all know.  On warm summers I almost always had a pack of Big League Chew in my back pocket.  Any kid who played baseball remembers finishing a pack in one inning.   Or there was the excitement of opening a pack of baseball cards not only waiting to see if you got a rookie card, but that single moment as you peel back the waxy wrapper to reveal, stiff, stale, white powder dusted pink gum broken into bits.  

Anyone out there remember getting bubble gum cigars?  I sure do, and I loved them purely because of how much gum was in one wrapper.  It seemed as I grew up gum kept evolving into new ways for me to ingest sugar and blow out my jaw.  For blowing bubbles my personal choice is Bubble Tape, you know, its six feet of bubble gum for you not them.  The best part is you can control the exact mount, which I have down to a science, for the perfect bubble.





The next best thing to gum by itself was Bubble Gum ice cream at Baskin Robins.  I use to get a dixie cup and spit each piece out so that I could chew it later.  I think over time you came to realize you had ice cold hard bits of gum that amounted to only 1/10 a stick of gum, but its the journey not the destination right?  I also loved Bubble Play, I would say that was one of my favorite ice cream bars to get from the Ice Cream man.

It’s actually been years since I’ve had a really good, fabulous, perfect bubble! Need to start practising again.

E l’idea è più allettante se queste bolle galleggiano! Mentre in Cina viene considerato un vero e proprio modo di fare “baby-sitteraggio”, il popolo del “tubo” lo considera un vero e proprio modo di conservazione “del bambino” in un mondo in rapida crescita! che siate mamme premurose o semplicemente stanche di capricci e urla, mettete il vostro bambino dentro una palla e godetevi un po’ di tempo per voi!

La “Bolla di Calore” così potremmo chiamare il caminetto ideato e distribuito da Antrax. Purtroppo Babbo Natale avrà difficoltà nel raggiungervi ma la vostra casa avrà  sicuramente un aspetto elegante! Un pop al giorno! Questo è quello che si può avere con 50 dollari! BOLLE DA VEDERE:

Richard Heeks ha una concezione del tempo ben precisa, al punto di rendere le immagini che cattura all’interno delle bolle di sapone, vere e proprie opere d’arte! Fresche e colorate rappresentano la brevità temporale della bellezza, il tutto dal mood “POP”!

Da piccola devo aver impiegato ore ed ore con le amiche nel cercare di fare la bolla più grande con una gomma da masticare. Una, due, tre gomme per volta, ma la durata e la grandezza non mi hanno mai permesso di fare una foto degna del nome “the biggest bubble gum”! A quanto pare l’idea non è dispiaciuta alla DRAFTFCB per la campagna pubblicitaria della Big Babol distribuita in Indonesia che mostra 4 scenari diversi con bolle da masticare al centro della scena!!! E chi altro se non la Big Babol è capace di fare ciò?!

For the past few years, Francis Cruz and Patrick Cruz have collaborated and performed pieces that revolve around ideas of cultural displacement and its bearings of marginalization and sibling hierarchy and its production of violence.

Word Immediatisms – Manolo Lugo

With the use of the public and a dictionary, Manolo Lugo will play a random game of word association in order to engage in a satisfying and overwhelming dialogue.

Manolo Lugo is a Mexican-born artist residing in Vancouver. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from the Monterrey Institute of Technology in 1999 and in 2007 a BFA from Emily Carr University. His work borrows from sculptural as well as from photographic discourses, structuring a sensibility around geographical displacement and its impact in the domestic and public spheres. In the work presented for LIVE, his interest in linguistics emerges from the necessity to re-assemble a fragmented and twice-removed self (geographically and linguistically) through the estranged terrains of a foreign language.

A Potential Conversion – Zarah Ackerman

Zarah Ackerman will be having a potential conversation with artists Douglas Coupland, Michael Turner, and Stan Douglas in hopes of bridging the generational gap that stands between them. Topics will include: the power of potential, internal vs. external voice, psychokinesis, the hand vs. the tongue, projections of the self, storytelling, the body as contained/container, energy transference, and favorite flavours of bubble gum. 

Live Performance Art Biennial 2009

It feels so good to really let your hair down!!  Dance in the kitchen with heels on, belt out your favorite song in the shower, virtual shop for prime real estate…like an island in the Bahamas, keep rehearsing your big debut with Oprah, and maybe even try to win a bubble gum blowing contest with your kids, because you used to be good at it!!  Let out the stress and invite in the sillyness…it feels so good from the inside out!!

I realize that I’m really late on this bubble gum Smarties thing; I think it’s been out since at least 2007.  But come on, give me a break, I haven’t been in the candy market for a while, now.  So I picked it out of a candy bowl in an advisor’s office because it looked interesting. And after trying one, it struck me as a confusing piece of candy. The name Smarties implies a hard, chalky candy that you swallow. This one starts out like a regular Smarties, and immediately becomes a soft chewy gum. So do you spit or swallow? Is it a Smarties that’s been made gumlike (so that you can still swallow it), or is it gum in the form of Smarties (so that you spit it out)? Are you supposed to eat the gum pieces one after another and just blend them all together? Or do you now eat them one by one and spit it out each time? I would like to hear what the candymakers were thinking when they made this, and how they wanted people to eat this.

So, after eating them, I believe that the candy is more like gum that is in the form of Smarties, and they were meant to be eaten together such that the gum just becomes a blend of all the colors.  But it still seems strange to me, because it is very tempting to just swallow each individual piece, as  a habit from eating the classic Smarties so often before. Also, I’d prefer to keep my gum colors separate.
