A week before I left for Argentina I received an e-mail from my friend Tim Strazza filled with unsol

A week before I left for Argentina I received an e-mail from my friend Tim Strazza filled with unsolicited recommendations for my time in Buenos Aires. He wrote, “Firstly, you have to get up with the ZZK guys. The main dude’s name is Grant or “El G” and he is super cool. Their parties are definitely the best in Buenos Aires, hands down. Grant also runs WhatsUpBuenosAires, a bilingual website detailing the hottest spots in BA nightlife. They definitely have a finger on the pulse.”

When I arrived in Buenos Aires I sent Grant an e-mail telling him I was a friend of Tim’s and asked him if he’d like to meet up for a drink, dance or dinner. He wrote me back, saying, “For sure, let’s meet up. Tacos this week perhaps? Ps, who is Tim Strazza?”

It’s this fearless open-mind and tireless drive to connect with those in his peer group that characterizes Grant C. Dull, founder of ZZK Records, What’s Up Buenos Aires (WUBA) and his most recent venture, FeatBA, a creative image and sound agency connecting local Argentine talent and ideas with global clients.

UNESCO has declared BA the first City of Design for “its capacity to inspire others.” In fact, the city has the most design students in the world with 35,000 design students enrolled at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. With such a huge pool of talent Grant says, “I look for artists with originality, artists who are creating fresh trends, and as a result, I’m constantly in awe of the artists I work with.”

Starting a company in Argentina’s lagging economy is no simple feat. “It’s been a long process,” he says, “al pulmón.” Which means, literally ‘from the lungs,’ but translates to our phrase, ‘sweat of the brow.’

“I don’t want the most talented music producer I know to be washing carpets. But this is the reality. FeatBA is a success if it means an artist is able to live off their art.”

[youtubevid id="taBAtxasWto"]

Fuerzabruta’s music was created by FeatBA artist Gaby Kerpel aka King Coya, one of Argentina’s most respected musicians.

Three FeatBA artists share the second floor of a tranquil, open-air plaza in Recoleta, an upscale barrio of Buenos Aires. Within the plaza, each artist has his or her own small gallery, with a downstairs showroom and a spiral staircase leading to a private workspace. 28-year-old Sol del Rio’s latest show “Ojos de leopardo,” (eyes of a leopard) featured a series of geometric paintings and sculptures including a painting of a blue leopard. Each tuft of fur and detail on the leopard is a micro painting, “inspired by Haikus,” she says. The radiant young artist digitally recreated each micro scene and toyed with the projected images to mirror each other and fade in and out along with her boyfriend, ZZK artist, Villa Diamante’s music.

“We’ve received such a great response so far and FeatBA gives me the freedom and flexibility to work within my studio, to do what I love,” says Sol, “Art is expression, it opens doors, I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist.” Sol de Rio’s paintings, sculptures and graphic projections rely heavily on geometric inspiration, a testament to her father, an engineer and her mother, a music teacher’s influences.

During her studies at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Sol met FeatBA’s multi-faceted graphic artist Nicolas Barraza. Barraza, a pensive dark haired Argentine runs Mite galería, an underground venture he started in 2008, which was recently featured in Nylon.

Nicolas began working with Grant when ZZK started in 2008, and is now one of the most prolific artists on the FeatBA label. “There are a lot of boring jobs out there,” he says, “But I have so much fun and liberty working with FeatBA. It doesn’t feel like work. I’m just hanging out with my friends and creating art. It’s ideal. There’s no set structure in our commune.”

Next door to the Mite Gallery, Job Salorio, an autodidact graphic designer, runs Purr libros, a small book design shop in the plaza with his long-term girlfriend Marina, a photographer and poet. When asked when he knew he wanted to be a professional artist, the elegantly modest Salorio responded, “I still don’t know if I am an artist.”

Grant C. Dull, pronounded “Duel,” has been abroad for the past ten years. Grant, now 33 years old, was first drawn to Buenos Aires in 1999 because of his love for author Jorge Luis Borges and musician Astor Piazzola. Now, 11 years later, the “Ambassador of Argentinean culture,” as Argentina’s Director of Creative Industries refers to him, has given back to the city that gave him so much inspiration. 4 years after launching What’s Up Buenos Aires (WUBA), he launched ZZK Records to “put Buenos Aires on the map of urban music.” Late in 2008 and hungry for a new project, Grant pondered starting a WUBA TV station and an online clothing store before deciding to launch a creative agency. “FeatBA is the result of 5 years of work with the local culture. It seemed a natural progression to put Buenos Aires on the map of global design,” says Grant. Launched in August 2009, FeatBA, technically an American freelance service, has become an alternative culture, unifying music, graphic art, design and photography. FeatBA is a double entendre meaning an extraordinary feat of artists all under one roof and featuring artists from Buenos Aires. With 22 artists on the label; graphic designers, illustrators, video artists, promoters, club owners, journalists, interns; it’s one big committed familia.

Acclaimed FeatBA artist Gaulicho designed the car shown above. He began painting graffiti in 1998, drawing upon influences such as folk art, religious icons, comic graphics, and 60 psychedelia and his own urban heritage.

Graphic designer Freshcore illustrates with neon and vibrant colors, inspired by imagery from comics, skate culture and sci-fi. He created the graphic Argentina Soccer Crest shown above for NYC’s Anomaly.

Undimmed by familiarity throughout his constant travels, Grant works to deconstruct preconceived notions, working towards conscious paradigm shifts in thought and culture through art. As an American working in Argentina, Grant is able to work on dual levels of communication, managing local artists and executing projects with an international business sensibility. In other words, the self-described “intense hustler,” is– punctual.

Grant spends the little downtime he has these days, hanging out with BA’s youth culture—the “really out there, 20 something graffiti artists and musicians” —creating local colloquialisms like “palobs,” a shortened play off of the Spanish term for “word.” The entrepreneur certainly has his finger on the pulse, and in fact, he might be this city’s pulse.

Well at least what my character Piers Rufus Vestry in the film ‘Last Night in Buenos Aires’ has to say about forsaking the joys of expatriate life and going back to one’s country of origin. The particular scene above ended up on the cutting room floor, but it’s what happens to the lead character, Simon, after he decides to stay on in BA, instead of skiving back to the States, marriage, security et al. What happens to him, presumably, is that he gets to hang around with Piers Rufus Vestry in dive bars every night. How lucky for him. The fictional Piers and I have a lot in common: Our dispositions and constitutions for example. Plus the outlook that, well, home is indeed the refuge of losers. Now discuss.

A happy by-product of my B-City Beat: This evening in Buenos Aires, there’s a special premiere of Last Night in Buenos Aires, a very tasty looking short in which your correspondent assays the role of one Piers Rufus Vestry. Piers is an Anglo-Argentine aristocratic party animal, living in Buenos Aires and, it is implied, horning vast quantities of champagne, tequila and cocaine while indulging in three’s company romps with wayward gringo party girls.

It was a tough job, but someone had to do it.

At one point, in character as Piers, I clamber on top of a bar and shout: “I’m Piers Rufus Vestry, and every **** in here gets a drink.” Or, let’s have that en Lunfardo: “Soy Piers Rufus Vestry y cada forro en este bar va a tener un trago!” My current Facebook status, incidentally.

Some very talented people involved in this short, such as Director David Labi and writer Matt Graham. Have fun guys, and make sure everyone gets a drink. Piers definitely would.

Invasoras e vívidas dende a memoria,

embístenme as lembranzas que escupíu a historia.

Lembranzas da boa terra: hoxe ándanme a nutrir.

Ondas do atlante mar,

qué son senón o vaivén das persoas?

Montes e picos pardos,

qué sodes senón a paz que envolve ó fogar?

Fondas fragas e verdes bosques,

qué fan senón comer da terra??

Coas cuestións no pensamento
