Buffalo Park stands at the northern end of Flagstaff. It is perhaps the largest park in Flagstaff, and is a popular destination for locals. It has an extensive running and walking trail system that are used by many joggers. It is also part of the cities’ water system, with a major water line coming down from the mountains. Historically, Buffalo Park was a privately owned “Wild West” style theme park with stage coach rides, roaming buffalo (bison) and other traditional themes. Unfortunately, the park was unsuccessful, and perhaps the best known event involving the original park was when the buffalo herd got loose and wandered into the city. Eventually, the city bought the land and opened the park. In many ways Buffalo Park is a hidden gem of Northern Arizona.

We took the dogs to a big park today. They have a trail that E used to get a jog in, and the pups and I just wandered around and then hung out under a ramada, which is just a covered area with picnic tables. The weather was perfect and it smelled like pine trees. It’s called Buffalo Park because it used to be a nature preserve and buffaloes lived here.

This photo has a lot going on, so I’m not completely thrilled. But it shows the entrance and some of the park, with the mountains behind it.

Day 2: Monday, July 25

Our first run during the Run SMART retreat was in Buffalo Park. The 7,000 feet elevation in Flagstaff, Arizona was tough on this Louisiana girl. I had heard so many horrid stories about running for the first time at a high altitude that I was timorous on this run. Even though I shuffled along the crushed rock trail at a turtle pace (according to Garmin, my average pace was 9:58), I could feel my heart pounding during the first mile. We had the option of running 2, 4, or 6 miles. After 4 miles my throat was so dry and I was so thirsty that the decision became evident. This would be a 4-mile run for me.

After the run, we went back to the hotel for breakfast and our morning session on “Running Success” with Dr. Jack Daniels. Dr. Jack Daniels is a legendary running coach who was named “The World’s Best Coach” by Runner’s World and a brilliant man.

We went to Northern Arizona University Dining Hall for lunch and then to the Coconino Track for Strong Core, Strong Runner. At the track we met Olympic runner, Martin Fagan and Three-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman.

After working out on the track, we went back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner at the Taverna Greek Grill where I had wonderful grilled sea bass. It was a great end to a great day!

Here goes my first attempt at a blog. It only took 3 years and a half-dozen people to say “yo

Here goes my first attempt at a blog. It only took 3 years and a half-dozen people to say “you should write a blog.” I don’t know how often these manuscripts will come out, but this is my way to communicate what I see the kingdom of heaven to be like here on the earth. It’s living in fresh ways Jesus’ style.

I’d love to hear responses, stories or simply a note like this:

“I read it, I like it, keep writing.” (You can even copy and paste this).

Here’s my first story from this July:

The last few weeks we’ve been going out with the students to do Treasure Hunts. If you haven’t heard of Treasure Hunts, we ask the Lord to give us “clues” through pics, words, verses, names, clothing to find different people (His treasure). When we meet people we say something like, “Hi, we were praying and asking God to show us His treasure and we got (something that relates to that person).” Or, “We’re offering to pray for people around here today and we were wondering if there is anything we can pray for you or your family?”

Sometimes people say, “no thanks,” others may tell us about a particular family member. Usually people don’t share personal requests.

So, a really cool story from 3 weeks ago:

After having some worship at a park in Buffalo, MN we asked the Lord for clues, and went off two by two in search of some treasure. After Jeanne partnered with Kallie, Jeanne started talking with the woman who was grilling chicken and steak under the shelter by the tables where we were praying and worshipping. Jasmine and I started talking with her 6-year-old son and a neighbor girl. Then the mom asked us if we wanted to join them for prayer, so we stood holding hands in a circle. We prayed for her older daughter to come back home to work things out with her parents.

The cool thing about meeting her: she is from Guyana and we just had a team go down to Guyana for outreach this past April and May! Jeanne nor I had ever met anyone from Guyana before (and we’ve met people from most nations)!

Later on after Jasmine and I had talked with two boys near the skate park, and prayed with a mom who was waiting for her daughter, we saw everyone gathering back near the shelter. Jenesa is one of the students who went to Guyana, so she was super excited to talk with the Guyanese woman. When Jeanne went back to talk with her, she kept inviting us to eat chicken with her (she had probably made about 30 wings and legs). After a few MN nice responses, “Thanks, but we have food,” Jeanne finally gave in and had the rest of us come over. The woman said it was her first time grilling there in the park, and she was happy to feed the 8 of us.

It was cool because another student, Becca, had prayed saying, “God, I really don’t want to eat sandwiches tonight. Can we please have something else?” So God answered Becca’s prayer! We also had spaghetti, rice, cucumbers and cherries with the tasty grilled chicken!

A huge rainstorm came through, keeping us at the shelter longer, and the Guyanese woman said, “Please wait so you can meet my husband.” As we were there for a while, I asked her what her spiritual background was. She is of Indian descent, and grew up in a Muslim family in Guyana. Her husband was Hindu, so after marrying him, she decided to become Hindu so they could share one faith, even though he never asked her to convert. Then, after living in MN the past 10 years, part of her husband’s family living here had started going to church, and his mom asked them to come. So now they’re both Christians, and it was very interesting listening to him talk about how the the Hindu holy books recorded the end times similarly to the Bible… We had a great conversation!

God’s treasure is everywhere if we’re only willing to “dig” a little by taking time to ask people if we can pray for them, or simply by asking questions. Most people really like to talk about themselves, and I’m surprised how much people open up and share their lives with a perfect stranger. I guess that’s the power of the Holy Spirit living in us.

Last Sunday my friend Janet and I took a day trip up to Flagstaff with big plans to do all sorts of productive activities.

Shortly after we arrived we set off for a long walk/hike at Buffalo Park and ended up getting caught in a heavy rainstorm. By the time we returned to the car we were completely soaked and wishing we’d had the foresight to pack extra clothes, or at least an umbrella.

So we found our way over to the mall and wandered off in separate directions to seek out new clothes and towels. We met up afterwards, all dry and newly attired, to discover that we’d bought the same T-shirt. Luckily the shirts were in different colors, so it wasn’t that obvious.

We continued shopping and walking around the mall until it closed and we simply had no other choice than to relocate to Pita Jungle for dinner. After we’d verified that the Flagstaff PJ was every bit as awesome as the ones in the valley, we headed over to Starbucks where Janet got to work revising her play and I read the paper and did this drawing.

Although the rainstorm ordeal may have made it sound like the day was a bust, we actually had a really fun time throughout the entire adventure. When the Starbucks closed down at 10:00 PM we finally decided to call it a day and head back to Phoenix.

By the time I got back home and into bed it was 2:00 AM, only four hours until I had to get up and get ready for work. I usually know better than to start the work week off on so little sleep, but sometimes you just have to say to say “screw it” and enjoy the moment.

It is now down to less than 48 hours until I will be out of the oven known as Phoenix and into the cool pines of Flagstaff. I have a good feeling about this trip, my daughters soccer team is playing well so far this season-what better way to start the season than a 4-5 game tournament? I am running mostly discomfort free for the first time in a while, and I am also running at paces faster than I have in the past for longer distances. I am not going to be winning any races but I may move up in the pack! I have decided that since my training/base building has gone well I will focus on training for the P.F Changs Rock and Roll marathon. I hope to run 2 half marathons and an Xterra trail race into the training. I know it isn’t my favorite race to run, but it is local and at a good time of year (if you can train well through Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, any holidays I did not add, and the college BCS bowl season).

I am excited to go to the Lumberyard brewery, catch an NAU soccer game against Air Force, and maybe see some elites training at Buffalo Park. I am also looking forward to shopping up Flag’s newest and supposedly best craft brew store, McGaughs. I remember going in there with my Grandfather way back when. Then it was a smoke/newspaper/magazine store. Now they have tons of really good, nice craft beers. Follow them on Facebook here –> http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000423880636&ref=ts

I am not sure why, but this has been the most stress free week I have had in ages. It isn’t like I have dropped everything either. Work is still work, we still run around in circles going to one kids event after another. I just changed my mind set to being less judgmental, less critical, and more at ease and peace with myself and what is going on around me. I hope I can maintain this for some time as it feels good not to be on edge all the time!

As an added bonus today I have included the new DJ Shadow track that will not be out until early 2011. Enjoy!

Enjoy!
