Foot-and-mouth disease has resurfaced in Vietnam infecting buffalos and cows in two provinces in northern and southern provinces, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. After a lapse of several months, FMD broke out again in the northern province of Hoa Binh, causing 45 cows and buffalos to be infected. It was also spotted in herds in the central province of Nghe An. Animal health authorities in the two countries are containing the disease, culling and disinfecting affected areas, and taking preventive measures to control the spread of the disease.

Supporters van AA Gent moeten naar borsten kijken – 02/11/2009

GENT – Toeschouwers die naar de match KAA Gent-Germinal Beerschot kwamen, keken ietwat verbaasd op: op hun zitje kleefde een vlaggetje met daarop de slogan: ‘Buffalo’s houden van borsten.’ Cisca Vandereyken, stafmedewerker Lokaal Gezondheidsoverleg (LOGO) Gent, legt uit waar het over gaat.

‘Gentse vrouwen tussen 50 en 69 jaar laten hun borsten minder snel onderzoeken dan andere Vlaamse vrouwen. Om hen aan te sporen om dat vlugger te doen lanceerde LOGO Gent en de Stichting Tegen Kanker de actie ‘Gent houdt van borsten’. Op de vraag waarom LOGO uitgerekend een voetbalmatch – toch vooral een mannenaangelegenheid – koos om borstonderzoek te promoten heeft Ciska een duidelijk antwoord: ‘We proberen op die manier mannen aan te sporen om hun vrouw te stimuleren om zich te laten screenen. Verder komen er ook steeds meer vrouwen naar het voetbal. Die vrouwen willen we erop wijzen dat ze aandacht moeten hebben voor hun borsten en die regelmatig eens moeten onderzoeken. Als je er snel bij bent, vergroten de overlevingkansen op borstkanker namelijk aanzienlijk. We denken dat we het onderwerp met zo’n actie ook makkelijker bespreekbaar maken en uit de taboesfeer halen.’

Ook de spelers- en bestuursvrouwen van de ploeg werden ingeschakeld voor de actie.

Bij het verlaten van het stadion kregen de supporters een balletje met een lippenbalsem mee naar huis. Op die manier kunnen de vrouwen ook hun lippen beschermen in de aankomende winterperiode.

El Club búffalos, de la ciudad de Loja, quedó campeón de segunda categoría en la provincia de Loja.

A partir de la primera semana, del mes de agosto empieza el torneo zonal, entre las Provincias:  Guayas, Azuay, Canar, El Oro y Marona Santiago,  y Loja.

Vale destacar que el club se biene preparando con mucho entusiasmo y un trabajo excelente de parte de los jugadores.  De igual manera los directivos del club se encuentran buscando los recursos  económicos necesarios para la participación de la institución deportiva, en busca de ubicarse en un papel preponderante, dentro del zonal.

today, i am very proud to be an american.

i always have been, but today i could raise my flag with pride.
for me, american history has always been a passion for me. sadly, i can actually claim that i enjoyed the movie national treasure (probably a little too much). not because of nicholas cage’s amazing acting, but mostly because of the exciting facts about america and her hidden past. yes, i know it’s a movie, but that kind of stuff gets to me. but today, a new page has been written in our history books…and this is not just a movie. its an awesome reality. we have an awesome man as our president. done and done.

i like my president just a little bit!! i have a poster and a cutout.

taking our american pride back to the grasslands, this morning, doug, stephanie and i took a trip to the i170 buffalo overpass. usually you can see the bison right from the highway, but today, we had to do a little hiking excursion.


we got right up in there. awesome.

instead of watching fireworks light up the sky, i decided to go down to the basement and see my friend JT light up the dancefloor with his beats. he played dirty diana just for me, and even sent out some guns’n'roses straight to my heart. he is #1.

…finns det visst en gammal psalm som heter. Så går vi upp i Jerusalem, borde den heta. Det är en backig stad det här. Idag har jag antagligen gått bortåt en mil. Först från mig in till stan, en timmes promenad ungefär, och sedan irrade jag runt ganska mycket i själva centrum och in mot Geula, för att hitta ett postkontor och slå ihjäl tid. Mina fötter fick blåsor redan på väg in till centrum, och jag har ännu inte vågat ta av mig sockarna för att se efter hur de ser ut.

Jag har i alla fall träffat J som ser ut som jultomten på semester (och bilden försvagades ju inte av att han kom in med ett barnbarn i hasorna), och han gav mig en del att tänka på vad gäller frågeställningar och annat.

Annars har det varit en sån där dag då saker trilskas. Mitt israeliska mobilabonnemang vill inte som jag vill (det vill framför allt inte ringa hem). Datorn hängde sig när jag skulle spara dagens fältanteckningar så jag fick skriva om dem. Chokladen jag köpte för att trösta mig och mina blåsiga fötter var inte god. Och jag har brutit min nagel. Sådana där småsaker som gör en irriterad. Annars är det här fortfarande en av de mest fascinerande städerna nånsin (fast den är fortfarande fascinerande kall!). Håll tummarna för att den inte blir någon modemetropol dock, för i så fall kommer Buffalo-skorna tillbaka inom kort. Eller – inte riktigt Buffalo, men i princip alla har skor eller stövlar med rejält klossiga sulor och fyrkantiga tår, från de ortodoxa damerna i Mea Shearim till tonåringarna på Ben Yehuda. Inte är det snyggt inte.
Nu måste jag ha mer thé. Fascinerande kallt här, som sagt.

I’ve been a bad blogger lately. These were taken a few weekends ago from my trip back to the Midwest. Originally Ash and I had planned to fly into Denver and meet up with the family at my brother’s house in Ft. Collins. The trip was altered a little with the passing of my Grandmother. Alaska Airlines worked with me to change my ticket so I could attend her service in Kansas. I have to say, while I wish under better circumstances, it was great to go home and see family. Doris lived to 99 years old; she was 3 years old when the Titanic sank and saw 17 different presidents take office and only missed seeing her 18th by a week. I will never forget her smile.

The original plans for the weekend stayed intact in that we all traveled to Bolder for the KU vs Colorado match up. It was Ashleys first Jayhawk basketball game; while it was unfortunately away from Allen Field House, it was in front of a home crowd since the hawk fans out numbered the Colorado fans.  

My mother has taken a liking to this tree which sits in the corner of a wheat field between Hutchinson and Ellinwood, Kansas. She travels between the towns often to visited her father (grandpa) and during one of these trips noticed this tree. She has brought it up in conversation several times, sent me her own photo of it and made a point to drive me by it on our way from Kansas to Colorado.  This tree could have easily been removed, but for one reason or another the farmer decides to plow, plant and cut around it every year.  I am my mother’s son, we both notice when someone goes out of their way to let a tree grow.  Does this make me a tree hugger? I gotta move…

My wife Swati’s birthday & what better way to celebrate it than taking her to the Land of Zeus & Poseidon:) In Greek mythology, Poseidon (Greek: Ποσειδῶν; Latin: Neptūnus) was the god of the sea. Poseidon was given a trident during the war of the Titans and the gods, in which he fought alongside his siblings. The war lasted ten years, after which the gods divided the earth among themselves by drawing lots. Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea and Hades the underworld. I have christened Lavasa as the Land of Zeus & Poseidon- a blessed waterbody in the skies. We left at 7am from our residence in Central Mumbai. We reached the Lavabahn(the road from Pirangut to Lavasa) in about three hours after a Wada-Pao break near the Kamshet toll-point on the Express-way. The road was enveloped by verdant green all through the 37 Kms to Lavasa. We met the Maharashtrian Cowboy (Dinkar Bhau on his pony Suraj)(see picture). We also met Ramdas the cattle-grazer & Subhash the Sahyadri Fodder-Delivery Executive (see pictures). We had Masala-Chai in Dagdu Mama’s village about 9 Kms from Lavasa. Dagdu Mama posed for pictures with his Ox Krishnaa (see picture).
We saw Buffalos bathing in roadside ponds & cows grazing in lush green meadows. I was fascinated by the shades of Green all along the Lavabahn.The word green is closely related to the old English verb growan, “to grow”. It is used to describe plants or the ocean. The most common associations, however, are found in its ties to nature. For example, Islam venerates the color, as it expects paradise to be full of lush greenery. Green is also associated with regeneration, fertility and rebirth for its connections to nature. See the accompanying pictures of my Journey to Lavasa. Nineteen out of 20 pictures have thirteen shades of green.
Shocking pink (also called neon pink) is bold and intense. It takes its name from the shade used on the box of the perfume called Shocking, designed by Leonor Fini for the Surrealist fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1937. This in turn was inspired by the Tête de Belier (Ram’s Head), a 17.27ct pink diamond from Cartier owned by heiress Daisy Fellowes, who was one of Schiaparelli’s best clients. Shocking pink kept its name in British English, whereas in North America “This intense magenta was called shocking pink in the 1930s, hot pink in the 1950s, and kinky pink in the 1960s…[it] has appeared in the vanguard of more than one youth revolution…to some it sings, to others it screams” . On its way into the German language, shocking pink lost the “shocking” and is called only “Pink”, while the English color “pink” is referred to as “Rosa”. Meanwhile in Portuguese one of its nomenclatures arrived intact becoming “cor-de-rosa choque” (“shocking pink”) used more frequently in Brazil. It’s also called “çingene pembesi” (Gypsy pink) in Turkish. Enjoy the pink Saree of Yashoda Padwal working the green paddy fields- Don’t miss out the pink wild flowers in the foreground. Pink shades continue in Master Waghmare’s smart pink T-shirt. Pink was the predominant color standing out in the journey other than Green.
Before we hit the first dam on Warasgaon lake, we barged into the early morning board meeting of the Dasve goats right in the middle of the road! Taking a minor detour we crossed the first of six dams on the 22 Km lake and crossed over to the top of the dam. The lake is now overflowing through the controlled sluice gates and feeding the Mutha river which flows down towards Pune. See the accompanying aerial pictures of the beginnings of the Mutha river from the top of this dam. The Mutha arises in the western ghats and flows eastward until in merges with the Mula River in the city of Pune. It has been dammed twice, firstly at the Panshet Dam, used as a resource of HydroElectricity. The water released here is dammed again at Khadakwasla and is an important source of drinking water for Pune. One more dam has been built later on the Mutha river at Temghar. After merging with the River Mula in Pune it flows as the Mula-Mutha to join the river Bhima.
