So, it goes like this . . .

Here in Los Angeles, it is difficult to understand the crap that we have to deal with here.

Not only do we have to deal with smog, our deflating infrastructure, and the occasional bad hair day. We also have to deal with the annoying traffic that pummels us daily into hypnotic submission.

Miles we drive . . . miles . . . or actually hours . . . yeah, that’s it.

Hours just to get to the next exit which is only 3/4 mile away. Yet, here we sit, succumbing to a virtual reality within our only post-pubescent heads.

I survive all of this and look over to see someone digging the frigging Erie Canal in his nose.

Are we not human?

Holy Crap.

And, I can’t even change lanes.

I’m stuck in the fast lane.

Ugh.

Be well,

The GramscoStalinist Fabian free sex buggers would never think of even daring to ask. Now I do know that most Libertarians are either atheist or anti-religious, but this is an issue of individual freedom. I have already said today on a comment that we can’t go round killing all the members of the Enemy Class upon the event of our victory on day one, since that will degrade us to their level: we will have, sadly, to continue to allow them the means to prosecute their perverted science on purpose, upon others. So the war will continue, until one side or other gets serious about a result…..

A 10-year-old homeschool girl described as “well liked, social and interactive with her peers, academically promising and intellectually at or superior to grade level” has been told by a New Hampshire court official to attend a government school because she was too “vigorous” in defense of her Christian faith.

The decision from Marital Master Michael Garner reasoned that the girl’s “vigorous defense of her religious beliefs to [her] counselor suggests strongly that she has not had the opportunity to seriously consider any other point of view.”

The recommendation was approved by Judge Lucinda V. Sadler, but it is being challenged by attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund, who said it was “a step too far” for any court.

The ADF confirmed today it has filed motions with the court seeking reconsideration of the order and a stay of the decision sending the 10-year-old student in government-run schools in Meredith, N.H.

(Story continues below)

The dispute arose as part of a modification of a parenting plan for the girl. The parents divorced in 1999 when she was a newborn, and the mother has homeschooled her daughter since first grade with texts that meet all state standards.

In addition to homeschooling, the girl attends supplemental public school classes and has also been involved in a variety of extra-curricular sports activities, the ADF reported.

But during the process of negotiating the terms of the plan, a guardian ad litem appointed to participate concluded the girl “appeared to reflect her mother’s rigidity on questions of faith” and that the girl’s interests “would be best served by exposure to a public school setting” and “different points of view at a time when she must begin to critically evaluate multiple systems of belief … in order to select, as a young adult, which of those systems will best suit her own needs.”

According to court documents, the guardian ad litem earlier had told the mother, “If I want her in public school, she’ll be in public school.”

The marital master hearing the case proposed the Christian girl be ordered into public school after considering “the impact of [her religious] beliefs on her interaction with others.”

“Parents have a fundamental right to make educational choices for their children. In this case specifically, the court is illegitimately altering a method of education that the court itself admits is working,” said ADF-allied attorney John Anthony Simmons of Hampton.

“The court is essentially saying that the evidence shows that, socially and academically, this girl is doing great, but her religious beliefs are a bit too sincerely held and must be sifted, tested by, and mixed among other worldviews. This is a step too far for any court to take.”

“The New Hampshire Supreme Court itself has specifically declared, ‘Home education is an enduring American tradition and right,’” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Mike Johnson. “There is clearly and without question no legitimate legal basis for the court’s decision, and we trust it will reconsider its conclusions.”

The case, handled in the Family Division of the Judicial Court for Belknap County in Laconia, involves Martin Kurowski and Brenda Kurowski (Voydatch), and their daughter.

The ADF also argued that the issue already was raised in 2006 and rejected by the court.

“Most urgent … is the issue of Amanda’s schooling as the school year has begun and Amanda is being impacted by the court’s decision daily,” the court filing requesting a stay said. “Serious state statutory and federal constitutional concerns are implicated by the court’s ruling and which need to be remedied without delay.

“It is not the proper role of the court to insist that Amanda be ‘exposed to different points of view’ if the primary residential parent has determined that it is in Amanda’s best interest not to be exposed to secular influences that would undermine Amanda’s faith, schooling, social development, etc. The court is not permitted to demonstrate hostility toward religion, and particularly the faith of Amanda and Mother, by removing Amanda from the home and thrusting her into an environment that the custodial parent deems detrimental to Amanda.”

“The order assumes that because Amanda has sincerely held Christian beliefs, there must be a problem that needs solving. It is a parent’s constitutionally protected right to train up their children in the religious beliefs that they hold. It is not up to the court to suggest that a 10-year-old should be ‘exposed’ to other religious views contrary to the faith traditions of her parents. Could it not be that this sharp 10-year-old ‘vigorously’ believes what she does because she knows it to be true? The court’s narrative suggests that 10-year-olds are too young to form opinions and that they are not yet allowed to have sincerely held Christian beliefs,” the ADF said.

“Absent any other clear and convincing evidence justifying the court’s decision, it would appear that the court has indeed taken sides with regard to the issue of religion and has preferred one religious view over another (or the absence of religion). This is impermissible,” the documents said.

The guardian ad litem had an anti-Christian bias, the documents said, telling the mother at one point she wouldn’t even look at homeschool curriculum.

“I don’t want to hear it. It’s all Christian based,” she said.

The First Bugger War is over after a surprising and inexplicable victory. But humans fear that the aliens will return so they set out to train the best tactical commanders possible, which, it turns out, is a position best suited for children. Apparently children are best able to make the decisions necessary to command strategic warfare. Not just any children of course, genius children raised in Battle School and trained at war, strategy, and survival. Enter Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, the most promising child ever to enter the school. Through his decisive and intelligent battle style he earns respect and loyalty, and of course, the position of head commander in the strike against the Buggers. This is the story of Ender’s Game.

But there is more. Ender’s Shadow, sometimes seen as a sequel, revisits Battle School but rather than follow Ender, it follows Bean. Bean is the super genius, next in command under Ender. Brilliant but tiny, he grew up on the streets before being taken to Battle School and know what it takes to survive. Card manages a brilliant retelling, hitting all the key points of Ender’s Game while making this book unique, interesting, and exciting nonetheless. Not only does it give you insight into the goings on of Battle School that Ender missed, it also weaves a tale of complexity as Bean attempts to connect with others and trust after all he has experienced.

From here Card does something interesting. He splits the series into two parts, one following Ender and his sister as they travel through space and watch humanity expand its reach in the galaxy, and one following Bean and the other Battle School kids as they deal with the ramifications of Battle School back on Earth.

Card does a fantastic job of keeping the two series connected while allowing them to develop their own paths and unique futures. He creates mythologies and politics that shroud the stories, creating a fully thought out and believably unreal universe. He leaves no detail unfinished, no plot point forgotten. And he does all this while asking big questions that keep you thinking. What is the difference between hero and xenocide? Is it worth winning at all costs? How does your family really effect your life? Can you ever overcome your past? Can you escape it? Can you ever redeem yourself?

My only complaint is that sometimes, the stories get so complex they hit that “over the top” point where you kind of wish he’d stopped just short of the last idea or two. Card has so many big ideas that there are perhaps a few too many of them crammed into the series.

Nonetheless, Orson Scott Card has created a series worth reading and from all the books I’ve read of his, this is certainly the author at his best.

Read the books:

by Orson Scott Card

Good book! I’ve been on a sci-fi run lately, and they all surprise me with their ideas and points of view. So thought-provoking, so intense. I really enjoyed the Game and its intricacies, I couldn’t wait for their next match or to see how Ender would develop his leadership skills. Although I did find the ages unrealistic. Card writes that Ender is 6 when he is taken to battle school; the situation would be more feasible if he were 15.

I really like Card’s way of using omniscient voices. In some stories such conventions leave me very confused and distracted, but in Ender’s Game, this extra tidbits have just the right effect. It is well done indeed.

{From Wikipedia: Set in Earth’s future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Buggers (an insectoid alien race). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed.}

… spoiler:

When they told Ender that it wasn’t a game and that he had just wiped out the entire enemy fleet and the home world I felt it as a physical blow. I wanted to scream at them, the trickery of it! And they expect him to be happy about it?

This swine is off to crash out in his sty. Before turning in, I`m considering ditching the `Miserarian` page and replacing it with `Miserabilia` instead, as it will widen the possiblities for putting memorable miserable stuff (such as quotes and miscellaneous pictures) without having to put in material about any one person specifically. Of course, miserable buggers will still be included, but I think a lot more could be done. Stay tuned, stay miserable!

WE went to my daughter’s Thanksgiving Day Lunch at school. Meghan’s teacher told us all the kids had worked hard to prepare the feast for us. As I took my first bite of Turkey, I closed my eyes and tried very hard not to pay any attention to the child picking his nose, praying he’d made the deviled eggs I’d passed up on the buffet.

The principal was making her rounds and taking pictures of each family to embarass us at the end of year slideshow no doubt, she made her way to our table and I told her hubby was at the dessert table, to which she replied she’d wait for him to get back before taking our picture. When Daddy returned with a heaping plate of Pumpkin Pie and Redi Whip the principal returned to take our photo.

We were a little spread out so I thought I’ll move over one chair, that way Daddy and Grandpop would be on either side of Me and it would make for a nicer picture. Meggers was in my lap and I began to slide over….

Daddy, not clued into what I was doing, pulled the seat out I was transitioning to and I ended up on the floor with Meggers still neatly in my lap (thank goodness I wasn’t wearing a skirt or the whole table would’ve had a show and some kindergarteners would’ve gotten an early lesson in anatomy). I was super embarrassed and the principal was still waiting at this point to take our picture.

My hubby thought the whole scene was hillarious. I shot him the look, hoping little beams would shoot out of my eyes and make him go *Poof*. I was semi giggling so the look wasn’t having it’s usual affect and all I could think in that moment was… I hope the booger picker made the pie hubby was wolfing down while laughing at my expense.

Meggers was super excited that Grandpop, Daddy and I had come to her celebration even if we did embarass her with our chair acrobatics. I have to say the kids did a great job cooking with the help of some of the parents and it was a fun day. Here’s a few photo’s of some of the things Meggers made….

Ooooo how’d that picture of me get in there? I have no shame.

It seems that most suveys out there show that 99.9% of people pick their nose, for those of you who would like to know more, read on – for the rest of you scale down your window and pretend to be doing something else even though you are still reading (oh yes, I can see you)

Favourite Quotes

If you think your activity has been detected, immediately suspend mining operations and begin to scratch your nose. This will usually convince even the nosiest (no pun intended) observer that you were merely dealing with an itch, which is not forbidden.

If the flicking maneuver cannot be performed, stay calm and don’t panic

Quotes for

With the finger you can get to places you just can’t reach with a handkerchief, keeping your nose far cleaner.

And eating the dry remains of what you pull out is a great way of strengthening the body’s immune system.

Quotes against

Nose-picking may carry a number of medical risks, thus most doctors recommend against it and encourage the use of a tissue instead. Risks include nasal infections, occasional nosebleeds (in 25% of those who pick their nose) and in rare cases perforation of the nasal septum (self-induced ethmoidectomy).
