Costing over three billion dollars to shape, the Emirates Palace is the most luxurious hotel building ever built. The lodge is, reportedly, planned to provoke Abu Dhabi’s profile among international travelers.

This huge lodge is lined with more gold than the supply at Fort Knox. The remainder of this luxurious lodge’s façade is made of imported limestone. In verity, the only part of the hotel we can undamaged simulate isn’t made of one precious stuff or another is its mile-long reserved seaside.

The hotel structure also boasts a near 200 foot high atrium, a very vanguard conference center and its own waterfalls. The slightest classy rooms in the world’s most posh hotel building are the Palace suites, which are each equipped with three bedrooms, a dining extent and living area and go for over $700 a night.

I know… not so much. This street eats truck is located out front of Toronto’s Silly Hall (some still call it City Hall). I can’t recall the last time I ate from a truck out front of City Hall. I do like the hot dogs you get from the carts outside of Canadian Tire stores. I try to stay away from that sort of food. It’s not easy. I was attracted to this scene by the lights and the fact I could get up on a raised platform (about 3 ft off the ground) to shoot this photo. I actually really like this photo in black & white, too. It was hard to decide which to post.

This beautiful building was built in 1950 and retains its original – and relatively well preserved – appearance. It has three floors, one basement, and a rooftop. There are a total of 6 three-bedroom two bathroom apartments in the building, all with very high ceilings (140 sq meters each, 2 per floor).

The building is situated on 1018 sq meters of fenced in land and has a parking area as well as large gardens on the premises.

The asking price for the building is 22 million EGP – but despite the cost the premium location of the land (off of Dmshek st) in conjunction with a new apartment building can make is worthwhile.

Here’s a photo of the Scarborough Mission building on Kingston Rd. and Brimley Rd. in Scarborough. There is this huge field in front of the main building and I figured if I was lucky the setting sun would paint the entire building face a nice shade of orange. The sunset didn’t entirely cooperate, but I’m still happy with the photo. I think this is the first photo where I had a vision in my head of what I was hoping to catch before I left to take the photograph.

The Willis Sears Tower stands at 1,450 feet, making it the tallest building in the US. Interestingly

The Willis Sears Tower stands at 1,450 feet, making it the tallest building in the US. Interestingly, its original design was not one building at such a height. Rather, the Sears Tower was to be twin towers standing at half its current height.

The construction is a 3×3 grid of nine towers; the NW and SE towers end at the 50th floor; the NE and NW towers end at the 66th floor; the North, East, and South towers end at the 90th floor. The West and Center towers stretch up to the 108th floor.

Some constructional stats:

The building’s structure is a “bundled tube” system of nine squares with sides of 75 feet (for an overall width of 225 x 225 ft btw. exterior column lines and 229′ at outside faces). Height to width ratio is 6.45:1. The tower was completed for $160 Million and used 76,000 tons of steel, 72,000 cubic yards of concrete, 17,500 tons of mechanical equipment. At peak construction, over 2,400 workers were on site representing 60 different subcontractors. There are 76 single-deck elevators in addition to 14 double-deck elevators, bringing the total to 104 cabs. Other impressive quantities include 25,000 miles of plumbing and 2,000 miles of electrical wire.

<del datetime="2009-11-25T18:51:56+00:00">Willis</del> Sears Tower is a 110-story trophy office tower containing a total enclosed area of approximately 4.56 million gross square feet (SF) and has a rentable area of 3.8 million SF. Willis Tower’s 4.56 million gross square feet would cover 105 acres if spread across one level. This is the equivalent of 16 city blocks in Chicago. Within the building, there are 25 miles of plumbing, 1,500 miles of electric wiring, 80 miles of elevator cable, and 145,000 light fixtures. The building weighs more than 222,500 tons, and it cost more than $175 million to build.

The architect and structural engineer designed the Tower’s curtain wall with a modernistic masterwork of glass and aluminum. The curtain wall system consists of bronze-tinted vision glass and black anodized aluminum spandrel panels captured in a striking black anodized aluminum framing. Granite panels, with aluminum-framed glass storefront windows, accent the ground level façade on the east, north and south building elevations. Building setbacks are provided on the building’s northwest and southeast corners at the 50th floor, the northeast and southwest corners at the 66th floor, and the north, south and east elevations on the 90th floor. The structural framing consists of steel columns and beams in a “mega-module” system consisting of nine modules. The foundation system consists of belled, reinforced concrete caissons with reinforced caisson caps. The Franklin Street entrance has a beautiful large glass, aluminum and steel canopy which was added to the Property in the mid 1990’s.

<del datetime="2009-11-25T18:51:56+00:00">Willis</del> Sears Tower is well equipped with fire protection. All steel is fireproofed, though I’m interested in what kind of fireproofing job was done.

There are four two-hour, fire-rated stairwells, one of which is specifically ventilated for smoke-free evacuation. Each stairwell has a phone every four floors to communicate with the Command Center, as well as firefighters’ phones for the fire fighters to communicate with the lobby desk and an independent public address system. Lighting in the stairwells operates on three power sources, including regular, generator and battery-operated power.

These days in Ireland is like living in an aquarium, water dripping, flowing and moving everywhere causing devastation to peoples homes and livelihoods. With lakes, rivers, streams & bogs bursting their banks almost engulfing all in their path. Puddles dotted everywhere filled with water. With the noise of the constant rain beating on the windows and wind howling around the house, one thinks of those less off who have been affected by this flooding. On the other hand across the miles others are dying daily from a lack of water, the dry drought of the desert lands. Oh how life is dynamic and diverse! As Rollo May says Courage is not the absence of despair; it is rather, the capacity to move ahead in spite of despair. Spare a thought for those less well off than you today!

Went to this abandoned church last Saturday with Tim, Jeff and Jeremy. Quite an adventure, crouching and climbing through the basement and then climbing up into the main sanctuary. Yes I know i’m still not done with the editing for the orphanage and most of Sam’s shots as well. Heh!

Now in San Diego, gonna do an engagement shoot for my cousin and as well as staying around for Thanksgiving. Missed my initial flights and had to wait 4 hours but thank God, managed to get on to the next flight out plus an upgrade to Economy Plus on the flight out from Buffalo, then on the flight to San Diego, assigned a middle seat but got a window seat in the end so thankful for the little things He provides.

Ended the shoot with this 6 light set-up heh! Pretty awesome i must say

(More images after the jump..)
Did a HDR version of the same shot to see what I could get. Slightly more unreal but yet somewhat having the same feel.

flickr

Last week we finally managed to get up onto the Highline Park in NYC. Granted the first time we tried to go it was the very first day and there were massive lines – for a park! Seocnd time lucky. The sunset was amazing that evening but the park has a few other very cool features. This tunnel actually had an art installation inside it. A set of windows had been re-paned with glass that matched a single image per pane from 700 photos of the Hudson River taken over the course of one day. The installation is entitled “The River That Flows Both Ways” by Spencer Finch. The tunnel itself is a semi-enclosed loading dock running through the Chelsea Market Building and reminded me a bit of the starfighter launch tunnels in Battlestar Galatica. I shot this as wide open as I could go to create a dreamy feel as the sun was almost completely set.

Every once in a while, I take a photo that looks pretty great, like I’m a photographer or something.

caribb: “Nice shot.. increasing layers of buildings..”

me “That’s the word I was looking for: layers. But it’s unclear where each layer starts and stops. And which buildings share a layer. Maybe each exists on its own – at least from this perspective.”

caribb: “It’s really rare to see such perfect layering like this in a downtown core.. It’s almost like it was all planned out.
