Today, I had the nicest thing happened. At school, there is a group of Bulgarian students who have a

Today, I had the nicest thing happened. At school, there is a group of Bulgarian students who have are tutoring foreign teachers in Bulgarian. These students are volunteers and have no teaching experience. What they do have experience in is learning another language–English and a second language like German, Spanish or French. Oh and they are fluent in Bulgarian. This is probably one of the most important things. Actually, I’d say the most important thing is that these students want to tutor us and speak both English and Bulgarian.

My tutor checked in with me last week before our first meeting today. My tutor asked me a few questions, I showed off one of my Bulgarian text books and that was that. Well, aside from the fact that there’s something pretty humbling about telling and showing another person how little you actually know. But lucky for me my tutor was kind and understanding.

The plan is to meet with your tutor one or maybe twice a week to practice you Bulgarian. The students and teachers organizing the tutoring are all very kind but many of the teachers didn’t know what to expect. It’s not as if our students are trained Bulgarian teachers and there’s no guarantee they’ve ever even thought much about tutoring. So it was recommended that we be prepared to direct our student-tutors to our school Bulgarian text book and ask our tutor to practice with us out of the book.

Today, I was prepared to do just this. I had my notebook, my pen and my text book out and I was ready. Then my tutor came to my classroom for my first lesson. This is when the nicest thing happened to me. My tutor pulls out a little book and tells me it is for my lesson. It turns out my tutor brought a workbook: a workbook for a second grader!! It had been my tutor’s younger bother’s school workbook last year when he was in second grade. And the plan is that we can use it.

And this is the nicest thing that happened to me today. Someone thought that my Bulgarian might actually be at the level of a Bulgarian second grade!!

It turns out, I am not actually at the level of a second grader. Those second graders seem to have a much better vocabulary than I do.

First my tutor made me write a dictation. This was humorous. And the first time I’ve ever done something like this in Bulgarian. I didn’t know very many words which added to the challenge and I spent a lot of time repeating slightly wrong phrases to myself as I tried to write down these unknown words in Cyrillic. My tutor was kind and read very, very slowly, did a little repeating and once in a while even told me how to spell words.

It turns out I was writing a paragraph about a boy and his parents. They are talking because he went outside to play without his coat and now his throat hurts. He also seems to have messed up his dad’s desk and is worried that his day will be angry. The moral of the dictation is that it’s hard to listen to your parents.

The next lesson in the work book was underlining vowels. My tutor excused me from this exercise–after she confirmed that I knew what vowels are. I do. Phew. At least I’ve got this under control. Watch out second graders, here I come.

Then I did a lesson reading a number of words for pronunciation. This went, um, okay. What went less than okay was when I was supposed to read a short passage for comprehension. Ha, ha, ha. I knew about four words. But here’s the summary. It had to do with a room with a window. A gray bird flies in through the open window. The boy catches it and it’s heart is beating fast.

This was when my 40 minute lesson ended. And when the bell for the end of the day rang I saw the same look on my tutors face that I regularly sense on my own: Really?! How can the last 40 minutes have passed so quickly?

I find it interesting that these scientists say that the “aliens” don’t like us tampering with nature. So, taking people against their will and sexually assaulting them is not “tampering with nature”?

Work on deciphering a complex set of symbols sent to them is underway, scientists from the country’s Space Research Institute said.

They claim aliens are currently answering 30 questions posed to them.

Lachezar Filipov, deputy director of the Space Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, confirmed the research.

He said the centre’s researchers were analysing 150 crop circles from around the world, which they believe answer the questions.

“Aliens are currently all around us, and are watching us all the time,” Mr Filipov told Bulgarian media.

“They are not hostile towards us, rather, they want to help us but we have not grown enough in order to establish direct contact with them.”

Mr Filipov said that even the seat of the Catholic church, the Vatican, had agreed that aliens existed.

He said humans were not going to be able to establish contact with the extraterrestrials through radio waves but through the power of thought.

“The human race was certainly going to have direct contact with the aliens in the next 10 to 15 years,” he said.

“Extraterrestrials are critical of the people’s amoral behavior referring to the humans’ interference in nature’s processes.”

The publication of the BAS researchers report concerning communicating with aliens comes in the midst of a controversy over the role, feasibility, and reform of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Last week it lead to a heated debate between Bulgaria’s Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, and President Georgi Parvanov.

Is life an inspiration to make music or is music inspiration to live? >Both, no? i doubt that the

Is life an inspiration to make music or is music inspiration to live?
>Both, no? i doubt that the first sound i’ve produced has been very musical (except maybe to my parents’ ears), so, say life comes first, then comes the music, that brings back some more life to life, and that then brings some more music, and so on….<

What would you do if there wouldn’t be music, starting with tomorrow?
Take photos, write, or draw. i’ve always felt a need to channel my emotions into some form of content, be it sound, text, or picture. i cannot imagine myself stopping.

…and what if you had to produce in a different music genre? What would that be?
>I do this on a regular basis, but always retain a side of electronica to it. if i had to completely do this in a different genre, i’d be a different person altogether.<

The beauty of silence or the chaos of noises?
>Definitely both! There can never be silence, unless noises pause, and for a second it is seemingly quiet.<

What’s your favourite album ever?
>There isn’t just one, since because to get to that place is so incredibly difficult, naturally more than one artist/title has done it. Orblivion by The Orb. I am past caring about what they’ve sampled, and which bits of culture they’ve recycled to get there. Neither am I interested in how successful their later work is. The complexity of Orblivion still dazzles me. I am equally impressed by Autechre’s Chiastic Slide – in my view an underrated and often misunderstood album. But years before that – Violator by Depeche Mode. I didn’t realise it would hold up so well after all the years, or how much influence it would bring to my world. Even now.<

…and your favourite album cover?
>That’s even more difficult. I have a thing for music packaging. From the traditional picture stuff, it would have to be Violator again. But a step further – Autechre’s EP7 CD, Deathprod’s pitch-black 4-disc box-set, and possibly ten others..<

Is there some music you like – but ashamed to admit it?
>No. I make a point of openly discussing any music I like, regardless of genre and culture. I grew up listening to heavy metal, then went through pop, synth-pop, hip-hop, then had a very focused electronica period, and then began exploring everything else. I can listen to U2 one day, and Huun Huur Tu the next.<

If you could be a rock star, who would you be?
>Don’t know… Prince?<

Do you have a role model?
>My friends are my role models. They don’t know this, but from a bit of each of them I construct this super-being that I secretly wish I could be, but am not. In the process I manage to make them feel unappreciated and come across as a self-centered idiot. How great is that?<

Who would you like to meet the most?
>A man called Walter Murch. I’ve been reading a lot about him.. The way he thinks seems familiar….<

What are your favourite movies?
>Oh no.<

If you had to direct your own movie, how would it look like?
>It would have all this material shot, and it would look boring and quite frankly pointless, until someone re-cut it into a sequence that makes sense.<

What’s your favourite food?
>Food for thought.<

Is there a band/music genre you can’t stand listening to?
>Shakira? Anything sex+cash+throwaway.<

What’s your (original) profession?
>I have no idea, quite honestly. I’ve always pushed for a creative position to do with sound, but it has always given place to something else because of money matters.<

What’s your next plan music-wise?
>It’s all very vague at the moment. I am moving towards a point that I cannot easily define. I know I’ll know when I get there. Hopefully very soon.<

Which language would you like to speak most and why?
>Oh this changes every day. One day it’s something Nordic – it sounds musical. The next day it’s Spanish – now they really sing. The third – Japanese…<

How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
>I would not. You try?<

What are your vices?
>I take things too seriously. I make too much effort. Or none at all.<

What is the most unusual comment anyone has ever made about you?
>I’ve been called an electronic stalwart once…<

The best moment in your life?
>That’s yet to come.<

What does beauty mean to you?
>Cue random Umberto Eco quote. I cannot even begin to express my thoughts on this..<

What would you do today if the world would end tomorrow?
>Panic?<

Which places you love the most?
>I like small places near big cities. I like the insides of giant buildings. And quiet rooms.<

Who’s your favourite superhero and why?
>Not sure about a superhero. If Nils Holgersson was a superhero, then maybe him.<

What’s your favourite flavour?
>Oh no.. baked bread, warm milk, custard, coffee, I could go on…<

Three things you could never get rid of?
>Music records. A computer. Chocolate.<

Your three favourite websites?
>Music of Sound, imdb, and the Gearslutz post-production forum<

What’s your favourite picture about yourself? (click on image for larger size)

What’s your most favourite picture you made? (click on image for larger size)

What is the question you always would have liked to be asked but nobody ever did?
>Help me out. I can’t think of any.<

Esem is Bulgarian music artist Georgi Marinov, born in 1979, previously known as “eesn” and “stereoman” during his early demoscene days at NOiSE.
He has so far released one single (Ikae, vinyl-only) and three full length albums: Enveloped (deFocus 2002), Serial Human (m3rck 2003), and Scateren (kahvi 2005). Scateren was released under a Creative Commons license and is available to download for free. Portions of Scateren were licensed for a Nintendo DS game – Theta, produced by Vitei inc.

Pretty much everything he does is electronic music, leaning heavy on the “intelligent electronica” side, and nothing you’re likely to listen to in a club or at a party.Esem is currently working on a new album, which is referred to as LP3, though technically it will be his 4th full-length release. Some of his music can be played on last.fm or downloaded from his website. Find out more details about him by checking out his discography or his soundcloud page.

She reportedly went into labour during her marriage to the child’s father. What?! The father, who is 19, now faces up to 6 years in jail for sleeping with a minor. What?! Has the world gone mad? Why are 19-year-old Bulgarians sleeping with 11 year olds? Why are eleven year olds getting married? I find this story both disgusting and terrifying, how could people be so stupid? The worst part however, and yes it gets worse, the girl told the News of the World that she will not plays with toys anymore because she has a new one. What?!

Well, today was actually quite a good day, even though it started out like total shit. I didn’t get to do my English project today because not everyone could present their projects today- so I have to do it on Thursday, when I also have to present my history project… great! <.<”

But when I came home and logged on the computer to write on my religion project, one of my friends from Bulgaria distracted me- she called me with video call on Skype and then we sat and chatted in English for over an hour! Haha, I must say I feel proud to have spoken solely English for that long d: It’s actually quite good preparation for next year! o: But after we were done, I could also feel that I had been speaking English- I had used all of my concentration in that conversation and had pretty much zero concentration left for my project, which is not so good. So I’m still trying to write it ): Anyways, it was fun talking with her

An eleven year old Bulgarian girl, recently gave birth on the way to her wedding. While still wearing her wedding dress and tiara, she was rushed to the hospital. Kordza proudly showed off her 5 lb 8 oz baby daughter Violeta, and said, “I will stop playing with toys, because I have a new one now.” The day after she gave birth, she married her 19-year-old boyfriend, Jeliazko. The two of them met in the school playground when Jeliazko saved Kordza from some bullies. However, Jeliazko does faces six years in jail for having sex with an underage girl. Both grandmothers will be guardians of baby Violeta, and Kordeza and her daughter will receive £70 a month in state benefits. Jeliazko said: “I want Violeta to be educated, to be able to read and write. She was born famous and maybe she will stay famous like becoming a doctor who invents brilliant medicine or saves lives.” Personally, I think this is crazy, imagine if Violeta had a baby when she is 11. Kordza would then be a grandmother at the age of 22!

“The academic relations between our two countries have a long history. More and more Bulgarians are interested in Chinese language and culture,” said Svetlana Lomeva, Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Science.

She also said the forum would strengthen the relationship among the academic institutions of the two countries while exchanges of scientific achievements could foster economic development and better people’s living standards.

“As the process of globalization comes into full swing, progress in higher education has to be achieved through the path of internationalization,” said Professor Tang Xiaoqing, vice-president of BUAA.

Maria Fartunova, director at the Bulgarian Ministry of Education, Youth and Science, said China and Bulgaria could implement joint education programs so that students could get double diplomas.

The two sides could establish joint scientific and educational centers aiming to develop the academic and scientific partnership and to support the participation in international projects, Fartunova said.

Based on the bilateral agreement between the two countries’ education ministries, the governments would annually finance 35 Bulgarians to study in universities in China and 35 Chinese students in Bulgarian universities.

“We have such agreements with 60 countries. The number of the students exchanged with China is the highest,” said Mariana Uzunova, chief expert at the Bulgarian Ministry of Education, Youth and Science.

Despite these students enjoying government-financed exchange programs, there were lots of Bulgarian students in China who covered their own expenses, Uzunova said.

Bulgarian student Yanis Dyakov was one of those visiting the exhibition. “I study Sinology in the Sofia University. My classmates and I came here to get information about the conditions offered by the Chinese universities because some of us desire to go there next year,” he told Xinhua.

Fifteen-year-old Ralitsa Guyrova, who studies Chinese language at one of the secondary schools in Sofia, also said she and her classmates wanted to continue their education in China. The forum and the exhibition are part of activities commemorating the60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Bulgaria.

(My MoM asked me to give a quick summary in English of my posts in Bulgarian. Here’s what I am up to this post is all about my day and the things I do each week. It’s pretty straightforward. I get up in the morning, work and come home after that. Oh and there’s yoga and Bulgarian dance as well as studying Bulgarian on the weekends.)
