Following the heroine death of Smashing Pumpkins keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin in the late 90s, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was also kicked out of the band for heroine use leaving Billy, James, and D’acry.

A few years later, the Pumpkin’s bassist D’arcy was kicked out for drugs leaving just Billy and James.

James Iha got pouty in 2004 and quit leaving only Billy Corgan.

The band then broke up leaving nobody.

Billy tried a new band and a solo album, but it wasn’t the same.

The Smashing Pumpkins got back together in 2006 with only Billy and Jimmy.

A few days ago, Jimmy got pouty and left the band again, leaving Billy all alone.

Too bad, so sad.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet With Butterfly Wings

One of the great things about early 90’s grunge music was the artists’ grasp and proclamation of the human condition apart from Christ. I believe they did us evangelists a huge favor. If you’re not looking for a solution, but only for the problem to be clearly spelled out, it doesn’t get much better than a song I heard again at work last week, the Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet with Butterfly Wings.

Never one to sugar coat reality, Billy Corgan comes out of the gate with, “The world is a vampire, sent to drain.”

Painfully aware of both his condition and his utter impotence to change that condition, he proclaims again and again, “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.” If there’s a God, a great sovereign responsible for his predicament, he’s the same heartless ruler who poked a stick through Job’s cage: “Even though I know, I suppose I’ll show; All my cool and cold, like old Job.”

I wish I’d been more in tune with early 90’s pop culture. Christ was the next step. Even though Corgan’s song closes off this option, stating that his predicament is universal–even articulating, “Jesus was the only son for you”–a transcendant God of great passions remained and remains the solution.

I’m thankful that Corgan and the other grunge artists of the early 90’s put their junk on the table. Whenever their songs play, I smile. Although Corgan closes this piece by repeatedly professing, “I still believe that I cannot be saved,” I have found–and am glad to share–my experience with a God whom I often don’t understand, but whom I increasingly appreciate.

…Actually, even from watching just the documentary, it’s clear that the DVD package is going to be pretty special. The main reason is because the director, Jack Gulick, and the rest of the camerapersons understood what is special about the Smashing Pumpkins and their music. For instance, in the clip of Superchrist they chose to use, they have a brilliant shot of Jimmy going ballistic (unlike in the AOL Sessions); they don’t focus on lifestyle but on motivation; they ask Billy about Soma instead of asking him to play Today or Bullet with Butterfly Wings. There are mentions made of the earlier music, but Gulick doesn’t go to any effort to focus on it or explain it. Instead, he concentrates on the music that is current and does himself a lot of credit by doing so. Most importantly though, Gulick focuses on the music as art, instead of focusing on the band as celebrities, which makes a strong departure from Vieuphoria and most other music documentaries. Watching Billy and the band go through the creative process, the psychological ups and downs and the differing levels of motivation might not sound like the most interesting viewing ever, but Gulick brings it all together well. The documentary is based around the two residencies.   Esta es otra de mis canciones favoritas y para mi gusto, una de las mejores de Smashing Pumpkins , me encanta, siempre me anima el dia!!  “Bullet  With Butterfly Wings” la podeis encontrar dentro de su trabajo “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” (1995),.

 En un prinicipio se llamaban Smashing Pumpkins (sin el The), la traducción era “aplastando calabazas”, los fans iban a sus conciertos con calabazas y se decicadaban a aplastarlas, asique os podeis imaginar las que se liaban (me hubierta gusta verlos por un agujerito) al final el grupo, harto de estos espectaculos, decidió añadir el The al inicio del nombre , lo que hacia que el significado cambiara : “calabazas aplastantes”.

En el año 2000 el grupo se disolvió, pero volvieron a juntarse en el 2007  y publicaron “Zeitgeist” .

  Del 2001 al 2006 Billy Corgan, el cantante, sacó un disco en solitario (The Future Embrace), escribió un libro de poemas, que por lo visto el libro debutó en la lista de los mas vendidos según The New York Times , y ademas  fue el libro de poesía más vendido en Estados Unidos en su primera semana de publicación !

 Ademas  partició en la banda sonora de dos peliculas : Stigmata y Spun, que por cierto, en esta ultima hace un cameo, aún no la he visto, la tengo en mi carpeta de “pendientes” , igual luego la veo y os cuento .

Avevo tredici anni e mi ricordo che stavo passando l’aspirapolvere in cucina ( capitava) quando Mtv, che allora era in chiaro solo fino alle 7 di sera, ha mandato Bullet with butterfly wings.

Quello strano cantante. Quel video pazzesco. La voce, così insolita. E il testo: cosa voleva dire? E il chitarrista, un uomo, una donna, bho?

Questo pezzo è tutt’ora il mia preferito.

E la storia non finisce qui. Sapete che un certo teologo di mia conoscenza (bb) ha intravisto nelle parole del testo un parallelo con le vicende di Giobbe :

Em 1995 foi editado um álbum que pôs em sobressalto o mundo da música. Muitos se questionaram quem era a banda e o que tinham na cabeça para editar assim sem mais nem menos um álbum duplo de originais, até à altura poucos tinham ousado e os que tinham eram os ditos génios. Pois bem a banda eram os The Smashing Pumpkins liderados por Billy Corgan, na sua companhia tinha músicos talentosos como James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlain e D’rcy, o álbum denominava-se “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” e é um dos álbums da minha vida. Deixo esta música como poderia deixar qualquer outra pois o álbum mesmo duplo nunca perde a consistência nem aborrece um pouco, excelente vídeo também este
