It’s 4.36pm Saturday and really only a few hours from my last post. It’s fairly quiet, but I can see the swimming pool is getting busy and one end is occupied by a group of young guys who have opened a carton of Bundaberg rum cans into the pool and are now swimming around picking them off one at a time. If they’re your kids I hope they can swim drunk!

I’ve just been reading all the schoolies articles in the Gold Coast Bulletin. The Bulletin probably won’t publish my link in their comments  section, but I’m happy to publish theirs if it will help end this nightmare. The page 3 article (P-plate drinks…) seems to indicate a new low in the depths to which the profiteers will stoop to make a buck. Our laws are mandated by the people and for a reason. Why would we consider suspending them so a few thousand hooligans can line a few more pockets before getting back to their tragic behavior.

Page 9 of today’s Bulletin carries a story about somebody’s daughters attacking journalists aided by somebody elses’ sons. Page 14 and 15 reveal the stench that hangs over Surfers. Long after the foul smells have been washed away, this stench is going to hang over our heads. We don’t have mines, or major agribusiness, or ship building or a silicon valley, or a burgeoning port infrastructure. No… we have tourism. Or what’s left of it since the State Government screwed up the IndyCar festival  and continues to allow this ’schoolies’ festival.

Alangkah bangganya kita sebagai kaum muslimin dimana pada hari raya Idul Adha ini kaum muslimin berdiri, berbaris, bershaf-shaf tanpa membedakan pangkat dan jabatan, tingkat pendidikan, serta tanpa batasan usia dengan jalinan persatuan dan persamaan mengumandangkan takbir, memuji kebesaran Allah SWT Tuhan Yang Maha Tunggal. “ Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Walillaahilhamd”.

Dianjurkan menghidupkan dua malam hari raya (Idul Adha dan Idul Fitri) dengan berdzikir kepada Allah SWT dan shalat serta ibadah lainnya.

Nabi SAW bersabda : “Barangsiapa meramaikan dua malam hari raya karena Allah dengan mengharapkan pahala, niscaya tidak mati hatinya ketika hati manusia pada mati”. (Ibnu Majah)

Dzikir yang dilakukan dengan mengucapkan lafaz takbir bagi hari raya Idul Fitri dimulai ketika terbenam matahari pada akhir bulan Ramadhan, sedangkan bagi hari raya Idul Adha maka takbirnya setelah shalat Ashar pada hari Arafah (9 Dzulhijjah) sampai akhir hari Tasyriq (11, 12, & 13 Dzulhijjah).

Pada hari raya Idul Adha kaum muslimin selain dianjurkan untuk melaksanakan sholat Idul Adha dan takbir juga dianjurkan untuk melaksanakan penyembelihan hewan qurban menurut aturan yang telah ditetapkan. Firman Allah SWT :

“Dan hewan-hewan qurban itu kami jadikan buatmu sebagai bagian dari syiar agama Allah, kamu banyak memperoleh kebaikan daripadanya. Maka sebutlah nama Allah (ketika kamu menyembelihnya) dalam keadaan berdiri (dan kaki-kaki telah terikat). Kemudian apabila telah rebah (mati) maka makanlah sebagiannya dan berilah makan orang yang merasa cukup dengan apa yang ada padanya (tidak meminta-minta) dan orang yang meminta. Demikianlah kami tundukkan hewan-hewan itu untukmu agar kamu bersyukur ”. (Al-Hajj : 36).

Nabi SAW Bersabda :

“Baransiapa menyembelih hewan qurban sebelum shalat hendaknya ia menyembelih lagi seekor kambing sebagai gantinya dan barangsiapa belum menyembelih hendaknya ia menyembelih dengan nama Allah SWT”. (Mutafaq Alaih)

Kalau kita perhatikan benar-benar bahwan diantara penyebab timbulnya pergolakan di masyarakat senantiasa karena adanya rasa tidak puas antara golongan yang tidak berkecukupan terhadap golongan yang hidup dengan kemewahan. Dan ketika ketidakpuasan itu memuncak akibatnya menimbulkan malapetaka yang mengerikan. Maka, kewajiban kita umat muslim untuk senantiasa memperhatikan golongan yang tidak berkecukupan ini dengan menyembelih hewan qurban kemudian membagikannya kepada mereka yang benar-benar layak untuk mendapatkannya. Inilah salah satu diantara inti penyembelihan hewan qurban.

Nabi Ibrahim AS setelah selesai membanguk Ka’bah di kota Mekkah, Beliau mendapat perintah dari Allah SWT untuk berqurban dengan jalan menyembelih anak kesayangannya yaitu Ismail AS. Sekalipun berat untuk melaksanakannya Nabi Ibrahim AS dengan sabar dan tabah penuh kerelaan menjalankan perintah Allah SWT.

Maka, bisa kita lihat seharusnya seorang muslim mempersembahkan segala sesuatu yang dikehendaki oleh agama guna menumbuhkan keimanan kita kepada Allah SWT yaitu dengan berqurban. Berqurban dengan harta, tenaga, pikiran, dan lain sebagainya untuk menegakkan syiar Islam, agama Allah SWT.

Khususnya di hari Idul Adha ini kaum muslimin dianjurkan untuk berqurban dengan menyembelih hewan qurban (unta, sapi atau kerbau, kambing, dan biri-biri) kemudian dagingnya dibagikan kepada mereka yang tidak mampu. Sehingga bagi mereka yang berqurban akan diberi ganjaran disisi Allah SWT.

Nabi SAW bersabda kepada Aisyah RA : “hai Aisyah, majukanlah hewan qurbanmu dan saksikanlah sejak tetes pertama darah hewan qurban itu jatuk ke bumi, Allah mengampuni dosa-dosamu yang terdahulu”. Aisyah RA menjawab : “hal itu tertentu bagi kami ataukah bagi umumnya orang mukmin ya Rasulullah ?”. Nabi SAW menjawab : “ya, berlaku bagi kamu dan umumnya orang mukmin”.

Ali RA berkata : “Siapa yang berangkat dari rumahnya hendak membeli hewan qurban maka setiap langkahnya memperoleh sepuluh kebaikan dan dihilangkan sepuluh keburukannya, serta dinaikkan sepuluh derajat, apabila bicara dianggap tasbih dan ketika membayarkan uangnya, setiap dirham memperoleh 700 kebaikan. Dan ketika meletakkan hewan itu diatas tanah untuk disembelih, maka Allah menjadikan setiap tetes darahnya itu sepuluh malaikat yang selalu memintakan ampunan untuknya sampai hari kiamat. Dan waktu daging dibagikan, maka setiap potongnya seperti memerdekakan seorang budak dari keturuna nabi Ismail AS”.

Dalam sebuah hikayat, Ahmad bin Ishaq bercerita, “Aku mempunyai seorang saudara yang hidup sehari-harinya dalam keadaan fakir, namun demikian setiap tahun tidak pernah ketinggalan berqurban seekor kambing. Setelah ia meninggal, aku sholat 2 rakaat lalu berdoa : ‘ya Allah, pertemukan aku dengan saudaraku di dalam tidurku, aku akan bertanya tentang keadaannya nanti’. Setelah itu aku tidur dalam keadaan masih mempunyai wudhu, maka aku mulai melihat ditengah mimpiku seolah-olah hari kiamat telah terjadi. Semua manusia digiring dari kubur mereka masing-masing. Tiba-tiba aku melihat saudaraku berkendaraan kuda abu-abu diantara kuda-kuda lainnya. Aku bertanya, ‘hai saudaraku, apa yang engkau peroleh dari Tuhanmu ?’, jawabnya, ‘ampunan dari Tuhan’. Aku bertanya lagi, ‘bagaimana dengan kuda-kuda ini ?’, ia menjawab, ‘kuda yang kunaiki ini adalah hewan qurbanku yang pertama kali’. Aku bertanya lagi,  ‘lalu engkau hendak kemana ?’, ia menjawab, ‘menuju surga’. Akhirnya kaburlah ia dari pandangan mataku”.

Peristiwa pengorbanan ini menjadi lambang kesetiaan yang sangat tinggi. Dan sejarah telah mengatakan bahwa karena semangat pengorbanan yang dimiliki umat Islam dari generasi pertama dan seterusnya, yang menyebabkan perkembangan agama Islam menjadi maju dengan pesat, menjadi kekuatan yang sangat besar sehingga dapat mengubah peta sejarah dan kebudayaan manusia, maka dapat dikatakan bahwa IBADAH QURBAN ADALAH LAMBANG DAN PETUNJUK, BAHWA HANYA DENGAN PENGORBANAN, SUATU CITA-CITA DAPAT DICAPAI.(Abu Aflah)

EUCHARISTIC EXPOSITION – St. Patrick’s will offer a special celebration of the Eucharist with Exposition and Benediction on the first Friday of the month.  Mass will begin at 5:30 pm, followed by Adoration from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  Please join us for this holy hour on Friday December 4, 2009.

What Happened at The Last Meeting

Our local school principles from Maury High, Blair

Middle, Ghent Elementary and Taylor Elementary came to

speak to us on what is occurring at your local schools and

address any questions we had. We discovered many of the

great programs being offered by our local schools. We found

that Maury High has many alternative education program

and offers a very popular home work club. Blair Middle is

working with ODU to create a programs for its university

students to help Blair students with homework, create after

school activities and also act as councilors. Taylor Elementary

helps shape our youngest students with manners tea and

focuses on cultural education. Ghent Elementary, which has

open enrollment for all of Norfolk, provides an open

classroom environment.

Je sais, je sais, ce n’est pas exactement une transaction. Je sais aussi qu’on l’a perdu pour rien parce que la convention est ainsi faite et que Doug Jarvis n’a pas insisté auprès de Gainey pour le retenir. Je sais tout ça, mais ce n’est pas assez pour m’empêcher de m’agrafer les couilles sur ma chaise pour m’éviter d’y penser davantage. (Ouilles! Ouch!! Ouilles!!!) Cote : 6

2) 30 juillet – le Canadien échange un choix de 2e ronde en 2005 (Marc-André Cliche, D) et un choix de 3e ronde en 2005 (Brodie Dupont) aux Rangers de New York pour un choix de 2e ronde (un piano à queue; mais non, Guillaume Latendresse voyons).

Note : Au moment d’écrire ces lignes, la situation de Latendresse vient tout juste d’évoluer. Quelques heures plus tôt, Guillaume et Annie Villeneuve ont été échangés au Wild du Minnesota contre le Franco-Ontarien Benoît Pouliot. Néanmoins, je vais traiter de l’échange comme si elle n’avait pas eu lieu.

Double note: Normalement, je ne traite pas du repêchage, mais vu que dans ce cas-ci le CH a transigé pour pouvoir sélectionner notre Guillaume national, je ferai une toute petite exception.

Décelant un potentiel énorme chez Latendresse, André Savard insista auprès de Gainey et de Timmins pour qu’on repêche le Québécois le plus tôt possible. Doué d’un physique imposant et de bonnes mains, le CH pensa longtemps avoir commis un vol à l’encan 2005. Ce ne sera pas tout à fait faux. Ni tout à fait vrai.

Parce qu’il connut un bon premier camp professionnel, parce qu’il est gros, costaud et habile (une denrée rare comme la marde de Pape chez le Canadien) et enfin parce que c’est un authentique jambon Lafleur, le public montréalais eut tôt fait de jeter son dévolu sur le numéro 84. Ce fut la pire chose qui ne pouvait lui arriver.

Gui Gui Gui devint une veuhdette avant même d’avoir compté son premier but dans la LNH. Son statut d’enfant chérie le plaça malgré lui dans une situation précaire. Tout ce qu’il allait accomplir par la suite qui ne ressemblait pas à une saison de 30 buts, ne fut assez aux yeux du public.

De son côté, la direction n’a jamais caché être déçu de la courbe de progression de Latendresse. Elle estimait que selon son talent et son expérience, il y aurait dû y avoir une amélioration substantielle au niveau de ses performances. Malheureusement, les stats de Guillaume continuaient de se ressembler d’une année à l’autre. Malgré tout, je ne désespérais pas de le voir un jour éclore. Surtout qu’il ne serait pas le premier gros attaquant à arriver à maturité sur le tard. Todd Bertuzzi et Olli Jokinen par exemples.

Justement, comparons rapidement les trois premières saisons de ces deux joueurs à celles de Tender (pour les fins de la discussion, je vais me limiter aux stats de base) :

Suis-je le seul à avoir remarqué les nombreuses similitudes entre Latendresse et Bertuzzi? Je peux vous garantir que Guillaume les avait remarquées lui. Ce n’est pas pour rien que le no. 84 a toujours cité Bertuzzi comme exemple (à part peut-être pour les attaques dans le dos). Il se disait probablement «laissez-moi le temps et vous verrez». Moi, c’est ce que je me disais du moins.

Bertuzzi a mis 5 saisons avant d’atteindre le plateau des 25 buts. Il avait 26 et 27 ans lors qu’il atteignit son peak (36 buts, 85 points et 46 buts et 97 points). Pour Jokinen, ce fut encore pire que Latendresse. Il a mis 5 saisons avant d’éclore définitivement et lui aussi a atteint son peak à 27-28 ans (38 buts, 89 points et 39 buts, 91 points).

Est-ce qu’on a tiré la plogue trop vite dans le cas de Latendresse? Assurément. Est-ce que le gros Latendresse était le spécialiste des garbages goals? Comme personne avant lui! Mais comme l’a si bien fait remarquer Jean-François Bégin de La Presse, avant cette saison, Crosby, Kopitar, Stastny et Cogliano étaient les seuls de la cuvée 2005 à avoir cumulé plus de points que Guillaume. Ce n’est pas si mal pour un piano à queue, non? Cote : 4

Note : Pour savoir ce que je pense de l’échange, relisez les deux derniers paragraphes, mais remplacez le nom de Pouliot par Latendresse. Je crois qu’il y a de l’espoir.

Double note : Préparez-vous à voir Lapierre et Bergeron souvent en entrevue. Et préparez-vous aussi pour les saisons 2, 3, 4, 5 et 6 de La maison de Maxim Lapierre.

3) 2 août – le Canadien signe Peter Vandemeer.

Après tout, il n’y a pas que Latendresse dans la vie!

4) 5 août – le Canadien signe Mathieu Dandenault.

Gainey a toujours été comme André K, un homme de séquence. Ici, il embaucha son premier joueur autonome établi, qui plus est un défenseur Québécois. Un Canadien-Québécois. Un Français Canadien-Français. Un Amahricain du nord Français. Un francophone Québécois-Canadien. Un Québécois d’expression française-française. Un Canadien-Américain francophone d’Amérique du Nord. Un Franco-Québécois-Canadien du Québec. Un Québécois-Canadien (je crois que si le maire de Tremblayville me lisait en ce moment, il exploserait tel le Old Faithful).

Dandy a été repêché comme attaquant, puis transformé en défenseur. Il a signé à Montréal comme défenseur, mais a été transformé en attaquant. Finalement, lorsqu’il a quitté l’organisation, il était redevenu un défenseur. Inutile de dire que son parcours n’a pas été de tout repos. Cote : 5

5) 16 août – le Canadien signe Jonathan Aitken.

Un jour, j’ai été chier. Puis, j’ai flushé et tout ça devint vite du passé. Cote : 6

6) 30 septembre – le Canadien échange Marcel Hossa aux Rangers de New York pour Garth Murray.

À l’époque où Hossa évoluait avec le Canadien, à chaque fois que je regardais l’alignement, pendant une ou deux secondes, je croyais toujours qu’on avait Marian. Inutile de vous dire que je débandais une fois que le match commençait. Juste pour ça, je l’aurais échangé contre une palette en pastique râpée sur l’asphalte.

Finalement, ce ne fut pas une palette de plastique, mais tout comme : on obtint un énième partenaire d’entraînement pour les autres pugilistes de la ligue. Cote : 6

Parfois, quand un enfant arrive au secondaire dans une école où il ne connaît pratiquement personne, la transition ne se fait pas toujours en douceur, surtout si cet enfant est réservé. Normal, c’est un nouvel environnement, l’école est beaucoup plus grosse et les enjeux au secondaire sont un peu plus importants. Dans ces cas-là, la première année est rarement leur meilleure. Puis, l’enfant se fait un cercle d’amis, gagne en confiance, s’habitue à la vie au secondaire et généralement la deuxième année se déroule bien mieux.

Avec Bob Gainey, c’est un peu ce qui s’est produit aussi. Il a mis un certain temps à prendre ses marques, mais 2004 fut une bien meilleure année. D’ailleurs, son premier move de l’année en fut un bon, et comment.

1) 2 mars – le Canadien acquiert Alex Kovalev des Rangers pour Josef Balej et un 2e choix en 2004 (Bruce Graham).

Lorsque Bob a réalisé que les Rangers étaient en mode liquidation, il s’est précipité dans la file d’attente pour espérer attraper lui aussi une télé 52 pouces en rabais. Le Canadien était en bonne position pour faire les séries (de justesse, mais quand même) et il espérait donner un coup de pouce à son club. Il a donc échangé un espoir de la ligue américaine et un 2e choix contre l’énigmatique Alex Kovalev.

L’échange fut pratiquement un vol, mais ce n’était pas uniquement dû aux habiles machinations de Gainey. Ce dernier avait offert à Glen Sather le loisir de choisir parmi trois jeunes espoirs de l’organisation (Balej, Plekanec et Perezhogin) et Sather s’est contenté de prendre simplement celui qui avait la meilleure fiche (58 pts en 55 matchs). Mais si les Rangers avait attrapé Pleky plutôt que Balej, l’histoire aurait été bien différentes. Parfois on est bon, parfois on est mauvais et parfois on est simplement chanceux.

Dans tous les cas, il aura offert aux partisans de Montréal l’un des joueurs les plus charismatiques de l’histoire de la franchise, la pièce maîtresse d’une saison fabuleuse (2007-2008) ainsi qu’un artiste, un vrai. Lent à démarrer (3 pts en 12 matchs), l’Artiste prendra son air d’aller en série (10 points et 6 buts en 11 matchs) où le Canadien comblera un déficit de 3-1 contre Boston pour finalement les éliminer, à la grande surprise générale.

Après une première saison complète légèrement en déca des attentes, Kovy nous lâche ensuite une bouse directement sur le tapis lors de sa seconde saison avec le CH. On n’y reviendra pas en détail, mais retenez seulement la faible production (47 pts), les commentaires assassins dans les journaux russes et une attitude de merde que n’aurait pas renié un certain Serge (les rails de coke en moins).

Piqué à l’orgueil , le Démon Blond 2.0, un homme fier s’il en est un, se rattrapera dès la saison suivante en nous jouant son chef-d’œuvre : sa deuxième meilleure saison en carrière et la meilleure performance par un attaquant Montréalais en 20 ans. Leader incontesté de l’équipe, il mènera le CH au tout premier rang de la conférence. Ensuite, sa dernière saison avec le club sera à l’image de sa première, ni bonne, ni mauvaise.

Durant ces quatre saisons, le public fera beaucoup plus qu’aimer Kovalev, il en tombera amoureux. Et comme dans toute relation amoureuse, on a souvent tendance à retenir que les beaux moments. Mais (censuré) qu’il nous aura fait suer par bout. On aurait parfois cru avoir affaire à un bipolaire. En tant que fan, ce n’était pas une relation de tout repos.

Pour finir, étant donnée que Kovalev était infiniment supérieur à Balej (x 5? x 10?), ce fut certainement la meilleure transaction de Bobby. Par contre, en regard de l’inconstance chronique de l’Artiste, je ne peux qualifier la transaction de chef-d’œuvre. Cote : 2

2) 4 mars – le Canadien acquiert Jim Dowd du Minnesota pour un 4e choix en 2004 (Julien Sprungen).

Contrairement à Kovalev, je ne suis pas sûr d’avoir 450 mots à consacrer à Jim Dowd? Passons. Cote : 5

3) 9 mars – le Canadien échange Sylvain Blouin à Vancouver pour Rene Vydareny.

En bon français, c’est ce qu’on appelle un «Show Stopper». Si ma mémoire est bonne, tous les grands quotidiens de la ville avaient littéralement arrêté leurs presses suite à ce coup d’éclat de Bob. Cote : 6

4) 26 juin – Le Canadien échange Mathieu Garon et un 3e choix en 2004 (Paul Baier) à Los Angeles pour G Cristobal Huet et Radek Bonk.

Après l’échange de Kovalev, celle-ci a probablement été son deuxième meilleur coup. Mais comme avec l’échange de Kovy, Gainey a davantage été chanceux qu’opportuniste.

L’intention, je crois, était d’échanger un jeune gardien prometteur contre un centre de deuxième ou de troisième trio de grand format. En bonus, comme on n’a jamais trop de gardien, Gainey a probablement demandé à avoir le Cousin comme police d’assurance.

Si Bonk ne fut pas le gros centre tant recherché, Huet dépassa de loin toutes les attentes. Lorsque la carrière de Théodore à Montréal crasha en flammes, c’est lui qui sauva la saison du Canadien. Sans être un grand gardien, le Cousin accompli un boulot plus que respectable et fut, pendant un temps du moins («Hey, filme pas ça! Donne moi ton cell pauvre conne! Ryan, pique la sacoche de cette salope!!»), très populaire auprès de ses coéquipiers et des fans.

Un peu comme Price, Cristo était peut-être un peu trop laid-back pour élever son jeu d’un cran ou deux lorsque l’enjeu l’exigeait. Il avait également une légère tendance à accorder des buts faibles qui avaient le don de couper les jambes de son équipe. Mais dans l’ensemble, son passage à Montréal aura été très bénéfique au CH.

L’autre grand apport d’Huet à notre belle société? Le Cousin prouva à toute la province que le personnage de Patrick Devon (le joueur Français du National de Québec) ne relevait pas de la science-fiction. Un Français pouvait bel et bien percer dans la ligue, et pas seulement parce qu’il vient d’un pays francophone et que ça arrange son auteur lorsque vient le temps d’écrire les dialogues. Cote : 3

5) 27 juin – le Canadien échange Stephane Quintal à Los Angeles pour des considérations futures.

Quintal n’a jamais joué pour L.A, donc selon vous, a-t-on réellement reçu nos considérations futures? Peut-on même considérer ça comme une transaction? Hummm… Cote: Fuck la cote!

Voilà qui conclut la deuxième année de ce bon vieux Bob. Somme toute une bonne année, je dirais. Sa meilleure même. Une année qui nous a apporté un véritable artiste (et la personnalité qui vient avec) ainsi qu’un cousin hockeyeur (et les blagues de pipes qui viennent avec).

Après la saison 2004, le hockey tomba en lock-out pour une année complète, ce qui permit à notre Robert national de ne pas trop faire de conneries (une seule, nous y reviendrons).

On se retrouve donc demain ou lundi pour l’année 2005.

    Very Reverend Michael Brehl of Toronto will lead the 5,300-member Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer after his election as Superior General in Rome. The first Canadian elected to lead the order, Father Brehl has served as Provincial Superior of the English-speaking Redemptorists since 2002.  Rev. Mark Miller of Edmonton succeeds him as Provincial Superior.

“It was a great surprise to me to be elected Superior General. I felt excited and honored and frightened all at once,” Father Brehl commented later. “When I took the oath of office and we sang the “Te Deum” (Thank You Lord) together, I experienced an enormous sense of peace.”

In his six-year term from the headquarters, San Alfonso/Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Rome, Father Brehl will head an international order of 5307 members of priests, brothers, deacons and students, including 48 Bishops, in 77 countries.

The son of a Toronto Star reporter, Father Brehl, 54, was born and raised in Toronto, where he attended Holy Cross separate school, Neil McNeil High School, University of St. Michael’s College and St. Augustine’s seminary, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. Entering the Redemptorist Novitiate in Toronto, he professed vows on August 15, 1976, in Our Lady of Assumption Church, Toronto.  He studied at the Toronto School of Theology, earning a Masters of Divinity degree in 1979.  On March 15, 1980, he was ordained by family friend Bishop John O’Mara of St. Catharines, ON at St. Patrick’s Church in Toronto.

 As a Redemptorist, he has served in the Redemptorist parishes of St. Teresa’s, St. John’s, NL (1980-1983) and Holy Redeemer, Sudbury, (1999-2002),  preached missions (1983-1987) and Novice Director (1987-1993) and Formation Director (1993-1998).  He was elected on the Provincial Council on three occasions and served as Vicar Provincial.

 A three-term Provincial Superior of the Edmonton-Toronto Redemptorists, he oversaw the Canadian ministries in six parishes of St. Teresa’s, St. John’s; St. Patrick’s, Toronto; Holy Redeemer, Sudbury; St. Mary’s, Saskatoon; St. Joseph’s, Grande Prairie; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Vancouver, as well as the weekly televised Perpetual Help Devotions on Vision-TV and young adult programs.

 For the international order, Father Brehl has been a member of the General Secretariart for Formation and has travelled extensively, giving missions and seminars in Scotland, Thailand and India.  

 Friendly, outgoing with a warm manner and deference, Father Mike credited his vocation to Rev. William O’Leary, his maternal uncle, Rev. Clair Tipping, his pastor at Holy Cross, Trappist Father Benedict Vanier and Bishop O’Mara.

A parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Whitby, is at the top of the Toronto General Hospital liver transplant recipient list and is appealing to fellow parishioners within the Archdiocese of Toronto to help her find a partial liver donor (the donated portion of the liver regenerates to 100% of it’s original capacity within 12 weeks). Le 3 juin 2003, Robert Michael Gainey devient le 15e directeur-gérant du Canadien de Montréal. À peine un mois plus tard, Bob passe à l’action. Le 4 juillet 2003, le CH signe coup sur coup le gardien Jean-François Damphousse et l’attaquant Pierre Dagenais.

1) 4 juillet – le Canadien signe G Jean-Francois Damphousse comme J.A.

Les joueurs de la LNH se souviennent toujours de leur premier but. Je me demande si Bob se souvient de sa première signature…? Il n’a jamais joué pour le CH et a été échangé deux fois en compagnie de Mike Commodore à différentes formations (Anaheim et Calgary). J’imagine qu’on peut considérer ça comme un fait saillant. En outre, J-F Damphousse a le mérite d’être le seul autre Damphousse de l’histoire à avoir joué dans la ligue. Je suis sûr que sa mère en fut très fière. Cote : 6

2) 4 juillet – le Canadien signe Pierre Dagenais comme J.A.

Le troisième membre des célèbres 3 Amigos. Vous vous souvenez des 3 Amigos? Non, pas les joueurs, le film! Oui, c’est ça, la comédie western avec Steve Martin, Martin Short et Chevy Chase. Un classique. Bon et bien, le beau Pierre était le Chevy Chase de nos 3 Amigos. Nous, nous avions Dagenais, Ribeiro et Théodore. Et le village de Santo Poco ont eu droit à Chase, Martin et Short (Martin-Short en somme).

Beau, grand et moins bon que les 2 autres (Steve Martin était le leader, Martin Short le tireur le plus rapide), Chase se contentait de faire l’imbécile et de se pogner les villageoises dans le film. C’est exactement ce que P. D. a fait aussi durant son passage à Montréal (parfois même des villageoises mineures selon de vilaines rumeurs). Doté d’un tir foudroyant et d’une bonne carrure, il n’a malheureusement jamais réussi à faire sa niche dans la ligue. Malgré des feintes plutôt ordinaires, il avait néanmoins la réputation d’être un tueur en tirs de barrage.

Ses faits d’arme? Il a déjà donné une précieuse victoire au CH en tirs de barrage, mais il a aussi largement contribué à la mauvaise réputation de nos 3 Amigos (parce que c’étaient des petits Québécois, les journalistes de Mtl leur ont donné un break. Higgins, Price et Sergei n’ont pas eu cette chance). Des amis qui l’ont bien connu m’ont toujours affirmé qu’il avait toujours manqué de cœur, même chez les pee-wee. Ça vous étonne, hein? Cote : 6

3) 3 octobre – le Canadien réclame Steve Bégin au ballottage.

Un des bons coups de Monsieur Bob. Si Dagenais avait eu le cœur de Bégin, le beau Pierre se rapprocherait dangereusement de son 300e but en carrière à l’heure actuelle.

Steve B. a longtemps été le poumon de l’équipe. Un excellent joueur de caractère doublé d’un attaquant défensif se situant au-dessus de la moyenne, le petit pitbull est rapidement devenu l’un des favoris de la foule à Montréal. Il avait aussi le don de la faire rager avec ses trop nombreuses pénalités stupides. J’imagine que ça vient avec le rôle. Bob aime bien acquérir ses joueurs par pair. Cette journée-là, en plus de Bégin, Gainey a également jeté son dévolu sur Darren Langdon. Si ma mémoire est bonne, c’était un pugiliste. Si ma mémoire est bonne, ce n’était plus un si bon pugiliste à son arrivé à Montréal. Cote : 6

Et c’est ainsi que se conclut la première année de Bob Gainey à titre de DG du Canadien. Pas de quoi écrire à sa mère, n’est-ce pas? Un peu anti-climax je dirais. Par contre, 2004 fut une bien meilleure année. On regardera tout ça de plus près dès samedi.

En ce moment, un peu tout le monde dresse son bilan du premier quart de la saison du Canadien. Paraîtrait que c’est un échec. Recalé le CH, dit-on.

Quand j’étais à l’école primaire, à la fin de chaque première étape, nous aussi avions droit à notre bilan de quart de saison. On nous remettait un beau petit bulletin et le soir même, ma mère était convoquée par la prof pour se faire dire à tout coup que « Oh mon Dieu, on l’entend jamais ce petit gars-là » ou encore « Maxime, c’est un bon élève mais un petit peu rêveur ». Et chaque fois, cela comblait ma mère de bonheur. Il faut dire aussi que je réussissais relativement bien, ce qui ne relevait pas de l’exploit puisque réussir à l’école primaire c’est comme battre les Maple Leafs, faut vraiment être poche pour ne pas y parvenir.

Si j’étais le prof du Canadien, c’est le papa que je convoquerais à la rencontre parent-prof cette année. Oui, Bob Gainey en personne. Après tout, théoriquement, c’est lui le papa du CH. Jacques c’est la mère, Bob le père. Et une fois que j’aurais papounet en face de moi, tenant dans ses mains le merveilleux bulletin de ses protégés, plutôt que de m’étendre sur les troubles d’apprentissage chroniques de ces derniers, je m’attarderais sur le rôle du père dans le développement de ses garçons. En somme, je remettrais à Bob son beau petit bulletin de parent (car dans mon blog, les parents aussi sont notés pour la performance de leur enfants).

Malgré le constat d’échec qui s’est imposé suite à la fin de saison catastrophique et au grand ménage estival qui s’en est suivi, Bob Gainey a quand même réussi à acheter du temps grâce aux millions qu’il a dépensés sans compter cet été. Les médias (et le public) ont alors retenu leurs chiens quelques mois histoire de voir la tournure que prendraient les choses. Ils ont vu et les chiens sont maintenant lâchés. Ils devraient d’ailleurs atteindre la gorge de Bob relativement bientôt.

Personnellement, j’ai toujours trouvé deux grandes qualités à Bob Gainey : il est calme (un must dans une ville de mongols comme Montréal) et commande un certain respect (pas toujours justifié par contre). Mais pour l’instant, je n’ai pas vraiment envi de disserter sur ses qualités d’homme de hockey, je préfère attendre qu’il soit foutu à la porte ou promu à la présidence-opération hockey (j’y reviendrai). Non, en ce moment, j’ai plutôt envi d’évaluer son travail comme directeur général du Canadien au cours des six dernière saisons.

Je ne m’attarderai pas sur ses deux passages derrière le banc du club. Je ne parlerai pas plus de ses multiples embauches et congédiements d’entraîneurs (en résumé : il a toujours congédié trop vite ses coachs, mais les a toujours remplacé par de bons hommes). Et je ne ferai pas non plus l’évaluation de ses repêchages parce que cela relève davantage de Trevor Timmins. Par contre, on va se parler de transactions et de joueurs autonomes les amis, LE point faible (et le mot l’est tout autant) de Bob Binette.

Au cours des prochains jours, on repassera en revue toutes les transactions et signatures effectuées par Gainey depuis son arrivé et on les notera d’un à sept. Pourquoi de 1 à 7? Très simple. J’ai toujours été un immense fan de Médiafilm, l’agence de presse cinématographique responsable de l’attribution des cotes dans les journaux, télé-horaires et médias électroniques du Québec. Et comme j’utilise depuis toujours ces cotes* pour noter un peu n’importe quoi dans ma vie de tous les jours (par exemple, ma blonde est une 1), je ne vais pas me gêner pour reprendre le système de notation que je préfère.

C’est donc un rendez-vous dès demain à la même bat-heure et à la même bat-chaîne pour l’année 2003-2004, la première de Gainey comme DG du CH. Au revoir!
