Surfers spend an inordinate amount of time on the water fully exposed to the abrasive elements of th

Surfers spend an inordinate amount of time on the water fully exposed to the abrasive elements of the sun, salt, and sea. Hours, days, weeks, and years of exposure accumulate on the body like the inner rings of a tree denoting age. With the supercharged, harsh rays of the sun constantly bombarding the Earth’s surface, it’s only a matter of time before the elements get the better of the body in the form of a nice, skin searing sunburn. Like the regret of having sampled a hot sauce too caliente for ones taste buds, the burn lingers on in agonizing perpetuity. It seems as though there’s not enough Banana Boat Aloe Vera in the world to ease the incessant, sizzling pain. Determined never to endure yet another painful sunburn, turn their skin into a wrinkly “alligator suitcase”, or worse yet develop life sapping skin cancer; surfers turn to the only special sauce they know of worth marinating in – “sunblock”! Sunblock provides surfers a sliding scale of SPF protection from the sun’s harsh UVA & UVB rays which means more time in the water scoring waves and less time having your face burned off. It also comes in a variety of colors (see Zinka) and aromas such as Coppertone’s infamous cocoa butter, whose nostalgic smell might just lull a surfer back to a time of childhood innocence and wanderlust summers spent surfing all day without a care in the world.

Surfers these days are pretty savvy when it comes to ensuring their overall sun protection. You might even say that they have become a bit of lotion elitists on par with the discerning smugness of a wine connoisseur. Just as every seasoned surfer seems to have a strong opinion of their favorite shaper, clothing brand, surf wax, or surf video; so now, they too have their favorite brand of sunblock. Armed with a growing list of high end, boutiquey sunblock brands that make Coppertone’s baby want to cry and soil her drawers in shame, surfers now have a legitimate selection of core surf industry produced sunblocks to choose from like Headhunter, Bullfrog, Shiseido, Watermans, & Vertra. With so many options popping up in surf shops and online, it is not uncommon to hear surfers debating and constrapulating the effectiveness of the active ingredients in each product as if they themselves were qualified chemists tossing around words like “oxybenzone” this and 5-parts “titanium dioxide” that. It’s all a bit too much nonsense to bear really. On the other hand, if we could somehow parlay some of this knowledge of sunblock to our visiting tourists, then perhaps we could manage to avoid the unsightly “2 for 1” Red Lobster Special, coming to a beach near you next summer!!

When it comes to sunblock, the only requirement to make it work is to apply it and allow it time to soak in. Seems simple enough in theory, but alas, even the most mundane tasks are often botched like a saggy boob job. Seeking to hit the surf like a thoroughbred racehorse out of the gates in 2 seconds flat, surfers tend to get preoccupied with other more pressing issues like mindsurfing the incoming set waves as they frantically fumble to change in public. More often than not, surfers forget to apply sunblock altogether or pull a half-assed “Messy Marvin” slathering sunblock on their face and body with no rhyme or reason let alone giving it time to soak in. This leads to an oil slick of sunblock upon their first duckdive and relieves their skin of necessary protection like an early season rain cleanses the streets. Sometimes the more audacious surfers will take alternative approaches such as swabbing gobs of zinc oxide sunblock under their eyes much like a NFL wide receiver would or in eccentric patterns all over their face like a Zulu tribesman on the hunt. If a surfer is really scared of the sun (i.e. – pasty white) or just happens to be on week 2 of an Indo Boat Trip, one might find them sporting the “Casper the Ghost” look whereby their face is fully caked in zinc oxide, oft resembling a mixture of Bram Stoker’s Dracula meets Binky the Clown’s- “Intro, to Face Painting 101”. These various variations are laughable for sure, but in the end it’s up to every individual surfer to fend for their skin. What method may work for one skin type may not work for the next. Lube it, lather it, “borrow it” if you have to. Your skin will thank you in 30 years!

So i managed to get Dos Box up and running on my system finally. I logged in to my Eurocorp client quickly and sent some drones to the field. Some old stuff, but now the missions feel much less stressful than they felt ten years ago. The game feels predictable and easy to figure out. But it still feels intense and augmentative.

Funny: I noticed there is one strategic defense sattelite cruising in stationary orbit over capital cities, as over Rome, for example.

______deutsch/englisch_________english/german________

This is my newest Goblin. Tomboy Goblin Girl and her pet Bullfrog. Just finished this afternoon. Goblin girl is wearing Denim jean overalls which is basically my attempt to make clothes but without a needle and thread. Since I can not sew, I basically felted a pattern for overalls and then felted the shape onto the Goblin Girl. Worked out nice. I would have loved more details such as stitching and or real buttons, but I got tied up with the Frog and just wanted to finish her off and start my new project. She is Aqua green which I used Wilton’s cake icing colouring to make. The frog gave me a bit of trouble because I made his legs so long, but in the end I think he workd out well. Next time I think I will add wire to make him bendable.

My next project will be a Halloween Party Goblin Girl.

I’m also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/katekate78 posting about my projects and progress!

I mentioned last night that we haven’t seen Michael J. Frog (Bullfrog) in quite a while. We finally did see him last night after we got a good rain.

Ordinarily, Michael J. hides during the day, but today was different. He dove in the pool early this morning while I was out taking pictures. He then either tried to hide from me, or decided it was getting too hot already and needed a place to shelter from the sun.

Well not really, but I realize I haven’t posted much this week. I’ve been getting home

Well not really, but I realize I haven’t posted much this week. I’ve been getting home a little later than normal, then we’ve actually had some rain (yea!) a few nights as well.

I’m going to try the early morning Saturday ritual and get some pictures. It’s supposed to be really hot and humid tomorrow so I’m sure I’ll be sweating like a pig. It’s so humid here, especially in the morning, that I have to take my camera outside 30 minutes before I shoot just to let the lenses defog.

There is one image I’m hoping to capture. We have a Woodpecker, but it has a completely white head. I’m not sure if that means it’s a young Woodpecker or some albino type thing. I saw it for the first time this afternoon.

Tonight Leecy and I saw Michael J. Frog for the first time in weeks. I guess the one and a half inches of rain brought him out from wherever he’s been hiding. As usual, he was in the pool.

Something I almost forgot. We had a little scare earlier in the week. Back on Sunday I guess it was, I asked Leecy to trim Maggie’s back legs just a bit. That was a mistake. Leecy trimmed one side almost to the skin, but left the other side noticeably longer. Not wanting Maggie to look like a complete freak, I brought out the clippers to give her an even trim. It was then that Leecy and I noticed that Maggie had this 2 inch lump just below her rib cage. That scared me, so the next morning I called the vet to bring both Maggie and Sascha in for their yearly checkup.

Well, leave it to Leecy to freak me out some more. The next night when we were placing Coco’s cover on her cage, Leecy says to Coco, “Say A Prayer for Maggie, Coco.” I look at her (Leecy) and asked why she said that. I knew what Leecy was thinking (cancer), but I was purposely trying not to think too negative. However, after that comment to Coco, I decided to call the vet the next morning and see if we could bring Maggie in later that afternoon.

We did end up taking Maggie to the vet the next day for a thorough exam. The vet said that the lump was just a “fatty deposit” and nothing to worry about. He said her teeth were immaculate. However, she did have a yeast infection in her ears (not too uncommon for a floppy eared dog). And, last but not least, Maggie weighed almost 60 pounds. I almost fell over when I heard that as Maggie has never weighed that much in her life. A gave a quick scowl to Leecy for making me, Maggie, Sascha, and Chloe all fat. We also did a comprehensive blood work exam since Maggie is now 8 years old and considered “senior.” One last thing. Maggie apparently does not like going to the vet anymore. She acted freaked out the whole time, which is highly unusual for her anywhere else. You would have thought she’d been traumatized at the vet based on how she acted. I guess as she gets older, the vet seems more scary.

Now fast forward to Friday for Sascha’s appointment. Sascha, the dog with limitless energy, was the perfect calm patient. Confidently walked into the vet, greeted everyone appropriately, sat down perfectly when necessary, and let the vet poke and prod her for the exam. She didn’t even flinch when they checked her ears (she doesn’t even like her ears getting wet, much less someone sticking their fingers inside them). Sascha now weighs 75 pounds and other than that, had perfect health. Teeth, like Maggie’s, were immaculate.

At the end of the visit today they reviewed Maggie’s blood tests with me. Everything was normal and looking good. No cause for concern.

Of course, for those in the know, SNOB stands for the Shortest Nuke On Board. This honorative title is conferred upon that nuke who is next to leave the ship.

Usually signified by the transfer of a specialized SNOB belt buckle, it is a title of honor, glory, and short-timeness.

I bring it up because, while the SEALs have had the BULLFROG for quite some time, it seems the Surface Navy, in typical fashion, is trying to create their own tradition (as always, based on copying others).

Is your master chief old? I mean really old? Well he or she just might rate an honor for that. The Surface Navy Association is searching for its next “Old Tar” — the active-duty enlisted sailor who has been Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualified for the longest.

According to NavAdmin message 224/09, applications will be accepted for anyone who earned their pin “equal to or later than Aug. 1, 1982″ — and has the paperwork to prove it. The award, created in 1996 by the Surface Navy Association is currently held by recently retired Command Master Chief Sammie L. Lymon.

There is one catch, however, submissions must be received by Friday, July 31 at the association’s headquarters — 2550 Huntington Avenue, Suite 202, Alexandria, Virginia 22303.

Gotta love “awards”, run by NAVADMINs, but created by an outside organization. Shouldn’t these be one of those things you just GET, and consider yourself honored to do so? And since it’s after July 31st, if there was no submission do they let the retired guy keep it?

This whole thing begs the question though… is there anything like this for the Submarine Force? I know we do the little ceremony at every submarine ball to see who the longest qualified guy in the room is (always awesome), but is there anything for the longest qualified, active duty guy?

Recently I stopped at Papoose Lake to have some fun. Oh what fun I did have for sure!
Papoose Lake is part of Chicago’s Cook County Forest Preserves, the Sag Valley area. It’s a quiet little place were few visitors stopped by to fish on the day I visited. Here are some highlights…

Black Eye Susans are popping up all around the lake closest to the parking lot. Not only are there black eye susans, but Blue Vervain…

Looks like this blue vervain just started to bloom. These tiny 5 petal flower clusters will continue to bloom straight up the spike. I think I would have named it purple vervain, to tell you the truth. I think this will be a painting one day!

Holy cow! Look at that! Is it a monster?
No, just the cutest little muskrat I ever did see! He was minding his business, collecting sticks underwater until he saw me, a big monster in his eyes, and took off down the lake, paddling his little rat tail as fast as possible.

Dragonflies were abundant. Two particular types stopped long enough for a picture. This is a Widow Skimmer dragonfly. It is named “widow” because as soon as she lays her eggs, the male takes off. What the heck?!? Anyway, I love that gold stripe down it’s back. Black and gold, handsome colors.

Next, we have a Blue Dasher Dragonfly. He had the a most incredible turquoise head to go with his striking blue body. We must sketch him later!

Not only did a muskrat, blue dasher, and widow skimmer visit me, but the frogs did as well!

Here we have a bullfrog head keep watch from the lake. He thinks he’s sneaky, but his cover is totally blown! I see you Mr. Bullfrog.

This guy was a little more obvious but tiny! He might be a whole 2 inches! I’m guessing this is the Green Frog. Tiny but cute!

I was pleasantly surprised over the surplus of wildlife I encountered at Papoose Lake. Summer at the lake is bursting with interesting creatures. I must sketch them all.

Oliver completed the Apple Blossom Trail for the first time and has now done it twice. Grandpa obtained some extra bikes for the boys and Ollie likes the purple one. He is still riding with training wheels, but he has a lot of potential. He also made strides in the pool and can put his head underwater completely. The little guy is on target to learn to swim and ride a bike.

The trail has been great for the boys and I would like to thank the cities of Iron River and Caspian for making it happen! The trail provides a safe place to bike with lots of nature. We saw a kingfisher, several deer including a big buck, cedar waxwings, rabbits, blue birds, a leopard frog, a dead skunk, and much more along the trail. I hope all of the towns of the UP put in more trails. This could be a biking paradise as the population leaves Michigan and the small towns of the UP.

We also went swimming at the George Young Recreational Complex. The resort was built by George Young, a native of Stambaugh, Michigan (now Iron River), who left for Chicago to seek his fortune. He ended up have a vast fortune from owning brick factories, using UP iron ore. He was a big golfer and as a hobby, he designed holes of courses he played right here in Iron County. When he died, his family bequeathed the land to the county and today it is a non-profit organization that runs the resort that everyone can enjoy. There is an 18-hole golf course, indoor swimming pool, and miles of cross-country ski / mountain biking trails. The kids and Nadia enjoyed the pool.
