Ms Cooper’s new book, Gone Sane, is a 197 page collection of poems based upon the lives of the famous and infamous. The book is split into six sections, each focusing on a particular point of view.

Christal’s experience as an editor and a free lance journalist is quite apparent throughout the book. There is a level of confidence in the facts of these cases that can only come from thorough research. At the same time, there’s an empathy that transcends the “just the facts” attitude of a reporter. Nowhere in the book is this more evident than in the poem Mark. It is prefaced by a quote from Cooper’s own story in the Altus Times about the case. Mark Gomez, at the age of one, was beaten to death. In the quote the journalist lists the injuries, in the poem the poet relates the purchase of a baby’s outfit which is then laid out over the grave,

as if I were dressing a baby

just before he climbs on a beer stained couch

to sit by Mommy’s boyfriend,

to feel his whiskered face.

The poem ends with Mark Gomez’s murderer’s death penalty sentence carried out, and the poet visiting her own child’s bedroom

His clothes are laid out for tomorrow:

red onesie, toddler jeans.

Someday I’ll say I knew

I’d hold him safe-

The skillful way she pulls the story full circle, into her own home, touches the heart and soul of every parent without being over sentimental.

If there’s anything to criticize within the book, it’s that certain sections don’t seem to mesh with the overall mood of the book. I’m not sure, for example, what a poem about Jim Carrey or the band U2 contributes to a book where the majority of the poems deal with murderers, rapists, and massacres.

Along the same lines, while most of the poems dealing with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis are quite lovely, they dominate the first half of the book to the point where you turn the page and groan to see yet another one. For the purposes of this book, Cooper and Onassis would have been better served focusing on either her life immediately after the assassination of JFK, or her life with Aristotle Onassis, but not both.

Finally, the artwork in the book, pencil sketches, appears unfinished alongside the professionalism of the poems they are meant to enhance. It might have been better for the artist to create artwork that more closely mimicked photography, or the heavier, cleaner lines of pen and ink drawings.

Overall, Gone Sane is a book that will make you think and make you feel in equal parts. It is well worth the read, and is available on Amazon as both a paperback:

and an E-book:

Lincoln Delmar Bundy was born in St. George, Washington County, Utah to James Bundy and Chloe Geneva Van Leuven (Bundy) on 12 February 1918. He was the 7th of 14 children. His brothers and sisters included Mildred Iona (12 January 1906; adopted), Genavieve (16 December 1907; adopted), Loran Sylvester (9 June 1910), Mabel Lavell (4 September 1912), James Gwendol (25 May 1914) [Marsha Rae Culley's Grandfather], William Fay (12 February 1916), Denven Lavar (16 August 1920), Nathella M. (7 November 1922), Merlin Dee (10 July 1924), Keith Alden (16 May 1926), Cleo Fern (19 July 1927), Daniel Atwood (Unknown), Vanord Orin (11 February 1932) and an unknown sibling.

Lincoln graduated from the 63rd Army Air Forces Flying Training Detachment on 27 April 1943 and sometime later was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 352nd Fighter Group, 486th Fighter Squadron flying P-51′s over Europe in World War II. On 10 June 1944 just after completing a strafing attack on enemy trucks he was shot down.

Excerpt from ”Far From Cactus Flat: The 20th Century Story of a Harsh Land, a Proud Family, and a Lost Son” by Lyman Hafen

“In late June of 1944, Chloe Bundy received a letter at her homestead near the edge of the Grand Canyon on the Arizona Strip. Her heart broke when she opened it and learned that one of her 14 children, a dancing-eyed, square-shouldered boy named Lincoln, had been shot down in his P-51 Mustang fighter plane over Normandy just after D-Day. No more was known of his fate. The spiritually-gifted matriarch knew her son was alive. She was right. But she never knew it as a proven fact in her lifetime. Not until 1996, when a British historian happened upon lost information about a downed American flyer, did Lincoln Bundy’s full story come to light.

Lincoln Bundy was already a bright and promising rancher before he left for the war in the spring of 1942. He dreamed of coming home and specializing in raising fine horses. On little more than an eighth-grade education, most of it gained in the one-room school at Mt. Trumbull, he was able to wing his way through flight school and become a fighter pilot.

On June 10, 1944, after destroying a truck in a German convoy headed to the Normandy battlefront, Lt. Bundy’s plane was hit by flak and went down near the French village of Crulai. For more than a half-century it was assumed the boy from Bundyville was killed that day. Yet somehow his mother knew he was alive. It was more than a half-century later, long after Chloe Bundy was buried in the lonely cemetery at Mt. Trumbull, that the family finally learned the rest of Lincoln’s story.”

He was killed on 7 July 1944 by the German Schutzstaffel in France. For his service and ultimate sacrifice for his country during World War II, 2Lt. Lincoln Delmar Bundy was awarded a Purple Heart on 11 June 1945.

How is he related to the Culley-Bundy Family History? Lincoln Delmar Bundy is James LaVoy Bundy’s uncle. James LaVoy Bundy is Marsha Rae Culley’s father.

So after spending the last few days gathering family history/geneology information online, through text messages and emails I started to consider how to present this for everybody to see and maybe help someone out who is also doing their research. I have decided to start with Generation 1 of the Culley-Bundy family which would be Marsha and I. So here goes -

I watched today a YouTube clip about a serial killer Ted Bundy. The interview was done in 1989 just before his death sentence. In this video, having no more reason to hide anything, he spoke in detail about his life experience where he was looking in self-honestly at the events of his life trying to understand why he became what he became. To make the story short he mentioned a few points that were the biggest contributors in production of the monster that he has become. One was pornography to which he was exposed rather early in his life – where within that he explained how it was all escalating slowly from viewing soft core pornography and progressing towards more and more violent and aggressive forms of it until the point where nothing could satisfy his thirst and he started acting it all out in his physical reality. And the other point was alcohol that allowed him to shut down all his moral value system and act in ways that he never believed he was able to.

What was the most interesting thing within this whole story was the long debate that followed after this interview where various professors tried to prove/disprove the link between hardcore/violent pornography and abuse/exploitation/murder of women by men who are exposed to this kind of material. In the end the mainstream psychologist community decided that the evidence to support the existence of such direct link was not enough and thus pornography was allowed to continue its growth and expansion as apparently harmless material. They claimed that the confession of Ted Bundy was not honest and that he was probably trying to mislead and was hiding something. Amazing

So basically it shows that our psychologist and psychiatrist have no clue whatsoever about the functionality of human behavior and are completely lost in the knowledge and information that was shaped entirely by this system which based on separation where values are placed on personal happiness and self-gratification.

Just looking at my own experience of participating in pornography I could see, without having gone to any fancy university, how this pattern of desensitization was growing within me where slowly but surely I required more and more different forms of stimulation to reach to the point of satisfaction. So it was not hard to see how one can end up, if allowing oneself to continue on this path, as a monster who has no regard for anything because of this drive to feed the addiction at all cost.

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to place trust in psychologists of this world because their finding served well my self-interest

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to tolerate people’s addictions because I expected the same tolerance from them in regards to my addictions

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to create a secret mind within myself and believe that it’s my right to have it and I justified that there is no harm possible as it is only in relation to me

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to believed that all my decisions that I make in my reality are based only on my conscious mind and that the secret mind has no play in decision making process

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to not realize that if the decision where made within/as conscious mind, as the part of the mind which people present to the world, we would have a beautiful existence, however the actual reality proves to us that something else is in control here

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to not realize that we as human are directed mostly by fear and greed and the outside presentation as happiness and love is only a disguise to hide the actual reality because of the fear to face it

I forgive myself that I have accepted and allowed myself to believe that I was born in sin and that my true nature is bad and there is nothing I can really do about it, but just to try and do my best in becoming a good man where within that I covered my original believe of myself as a sinner with ideas of goodness and morality thus suppressing and denying my evilness – thus empowering it more and more

I commit myself to expose fake theories of psychologists and psychiatrists by sharing my own experiences and experiences of other people that reveal the actuality of our existence as humans

I commit myself to show that psychologists and psychiatrists have no understanding yet about the actual functioning of human behavior and that we should not place any trust in their research but we should develop our own common sense and see reality through direct observation

I commit myself to show, through many various events that are happening in the world, the danger of having and participating in the secret mind

I commit myself to clean up my secret mind where I will investigate in specificity what I am still not willing to expose of myself to others and where within that I will utilize self-forgiveness and self-corrective application so that I become a transparent and trustworthy being

My husband gave me the nick-name of ‘crazy dog lady’ several years ago when I was lying

My husband gave me the nick-name of ‘crazy dog lady’ several years ago when I was lying on the living room floor surrounded by our dear Maxi dog and two foster puppies, one of whom is now our boy Bundy. I have always loved animals, but never thought of myself as a dog person until we got Maxi, from then on I became slightly obsessed with dogs and the obsession reached a peak with the adoption of Bundy. We now have dog themed calendars, notepads, artwork, stuffed toys, photo frames and I spend alot of time reading dog blogs, sharing stories of dogs on Facebook, talking dogs with other dog lovers and walking dogs at our local animal shelter.

Bundy and Maxi are pretty used to me taking photos of their every waking (and sleeping) moment, Bundy can switch between completely ignoring me or cooperating completely depending on what his focus is at the time – me or a ball/bird/rat/treat. Maxi has the innate ability to be able to identify a phone camera, whether I have my DSLR, point and shoot camera or iphone she turns her head away from the camera as soon as I take the photo. Photographing Maxi has to involve treats or the beach, both make her incredibly happy and easier to photograph.

I took these photographs last year and am quite happy with the result, Bundy and Maxi had their props, soccer ball and treat which helped take the focus of me holding a camera. The post-processing in Lightroom makes them look less like an every day photo and more like a piece of art, at least they look like that to me but I know that it isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’. One day soon I plan to get them printed on canvas, however I am also toying with the idea of recreating them using pastel or oil paint after seeing doggy portraits on Treats A La Bark.

By Diane Esmond

It’s May and, once again, all roads lead to Bundy.

Welllll, if you’re a writer, they do.

Bundaberg’s own little festival of ideas, Writefest, is bringing writers in from all over the nation.

That’s right. This year we’ll be meeting writers from as far away as Western Australia.

But that’s not why this year is special. Not only is it the eighth year of WriteFest but it is Bundaberg Writers’ Club’s twenty-first birthday.

The idea for a festival grew out of that vital community of writers, the Bundaberg Writers’ Club, who thought it would be great to have Australia’s top authors come to Bundaberg, rather than the other way around.

Sandy Curtis, then the club’s president, had an idea how it could be done.

And what an idea WriteFest turned out to be. Nay-sayers are still eating their hats.

After that first year, WriteFest was able to offer interviews with agents and publishers. To date, four local writers have been able to take the next step directly from WriteFest and become published authors.

This year’s workshops are in the hands of Marianne de Pierres, Kaz Delaney, Dr John Clarke, Meg Vann, and Lisa Blainey-Lewin.

We’d like to thank the Bundaberg Library for their support in bringing Marianne de Pierres to Bundaberg, and for hosting an author talk with her on Thursday, May 17, from 6.30 to 8pm.

The above group includes 2011 presenters and participants – Anne Gracie, author (back left); (Front l-r) weapons instructor Ray Floro; Leanne C Taylor, QANTM lecturer and games designer; Leah Giarrantano (author); Aimee Lindorff QWC rep; Kate Ballard, editor, Hachette Australia: Dionie Fiford, Editor.

Topics include writing speculative fiction, crime, young adult and educational fiction, digital publishing and marketing.

Dr John Clarke, criminal psychologist and profiler, is giving insights into human behaviour, especially of the criminal type.

There will be a pubisher (Lindy Cameron – Clan Destine Press), an editor (Rachel Donovan – Allen & Unwin), and a Masterclass – Louise Cusack.

To quote Jason Nahrung, past WriteFest presenter and editor of WQ (Queensland Writers’ Centre magazine) WriteFest is one of those fairly intimate occasions when everyone’s just chilled out yet totally keen.

Writefest attendee’s in 2011 participating in a Q&A session.

The 2011 Major League Baseball Rule IV Draft was widely considered to be one of the best drafts in recent memory, if not all time. Although there was no consensus “generational” talent that would go #1, such as 2009’s #1 Stephen Strasburg or 2010’s #1 Bryce Harper, the depth of top-flight talent would be the calling card of the 2011 draft.

There were five elite pitching prospects that went in the first seven picks; college pitchers Gerrit Cole (#1, Pirates), Danny Hultzen (#2, Mariners), and long-tossing Trevor Bauer (#3, Diamondbacks); and Oklahoma High School pitchers Dylan Bundy (#4, Orioles) and Archie Bradley (#7, Diamondbacks). Each of the first four picks have generated significant buzz: Cole for his blazing fastball and ace projection in High A; Hultzen for his absolute dominance of college hitters while at Virginia and continued dominance in AA; Bauer for his routine of 500-foot long-tossing, throwing his first warm-up pitch off the backstop, dominance at UCLA, and continued dominance in AA; and Bundy for his 100-mph fastball and ace projection, coupled with his near perfect dominance of Low A hitters thus far (64 batters faced over 20 innings, allowing only two hits and two walks, while striking out 33.

Perhaps the best one of them all, and the one generating the least buzz, has been the #7 pick: former Broken Arrow Tiger Archie Bradley. Bradley’s tale started long before he was drafted. After to transferring to Broken Arrow High School before his junior year, Bradley quickly became a multi-sport star as the starting quarterback for the football team and the ace pitcher for the baseball team. After Bradley’s junior season, he was named to the 2010 Aflac All-American Baseball Classic as a pitcher for the West team.

Prior to the 2011 baseball season, there was considerable buzz surrounding Bundy and Bradley. As often happens with elite athletes who play in the same area, Bundy and Bradley becoming friends when they were roommates for the Dallas Baseball Academy of Texas (D-Bat) Mustangs, an amateur team that played in the DFW Metro Scout League and in the Connie Mack World Series, the premier tournament for high school-age baseball players.

During Bradley’s senior season, he led his team to a 36-1 record and the Oklahoma 6A State Championship, Broken Arrow’s first since 1991. Bradley pounded the strike zone with his mid-to-upper 90s fastball and power curveball, striking out 14 and only allowing two hits. Three of Bradley’s strikeouts were by Owasso’s star pitcher Dylan Bundy, who was playing third base (he pitched the previous day). Bradley finished the season with a 12-1 record, allowing only three earned runs across 71.1 innings, while striking out 133 (16.8 K/9).

In February, Bradley committed to play both football and baseball at the University of Oklahoma. Bradley, a big Sooner fan, was going to redshirt his freshman year in order to acclimate to college. Bradley, when asked about his choice to go to Oklahoma or play professional baseball, said:

It’s going to come down to what I really feel is best for me. I’ve used this analogy a bunch: Andrew Luck staying at Stanford proved that money isn’t everything. I have to make a decision that I can be happy with. I’ll weigh it out, whether it’s OU or pro ball is right for my future. It’s gonna be a big decision.

On June 6, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Bradley with the #7 overall pick of the draft. Bradley had a choice: go to Oklahoma to learn, play football and baseball, and hope to improve his draft stock in three years; or sign for guaranteed millions with the Diamondbacks. Before the draft, Bradley and fellow Oklahoman Bundy had made waves with their pre-draft comments about expected signing bonuses, as reported by Baseball America’s Jim Callis:

Sticker shock: Teams being told asking price on Dylan Bundy is 6 yrs, $30 million. For Archie Bradley, 5 yrs and $20 million. #mlbdraft—
Jim Callis (@jimcallisBA) May 16, 2011

Callis later said that:

Neither Bundy nor Bradley will top Strasburg’s [$15.1 million] contract. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if Bundy equaled or surpassed Beckett and Porcello [both $7 million], or if Bradley topped the $5.25 million two-sport deal that quarterback/right hander Zach Lee got from the Dodgers in 2010.

Just minutes before the deadline, Bradley signed a contract worth $5 million, spread out over five years due to his two-sport abilities (players who could play multiple sports in college are eligible to have their signing bonuses spread out over a number of years, while one-sport athletes must get theirs all at once).

After signing, Bradley was sent to the Missoula Osprey, the Diamondbacks’ Rookie Level affiliate in the Pioneer League. Bradley appeared in two games for one-inning each, allowing one hit, zero walks, and zero runs, while striking out four. In 15 innings with the Diamondbacks during instructional league play, Bradley gave up four runs, walking four, giving up just five hits, and striking out 22.

After the season, the prospect prognosticators repeatedly stated how much they liked Bradley’s potential, with Baseball America ranking Bradley #2 in the Diamondbacks’ organization and #25 overall, Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein ranking Bradley #3 in the Diamondbacks’ organization and #37 overall, and Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com rated Bradley #18. John Sickels stated that it is “[h]ard to say that a guy picked #7 overall is a “steal,” but he may very well be.

The glowing reports came in during Spring Training, with the buzz focusing on Bradley’s velocity and power curveball. One of the people commenting was Diamondbacks starting catcher, Miguel Montero:

I wanted to see what he had. I don’t believe what people say, so I wanted to see it. I saw the real deal right there. The ball was coming out of his hand like he was throwing 200 mph, an explosion. Those kids had no chance. Then I’m like, ‘He’s got just a fastball,’ and then he threw a hammer [curveball]. I was like, ‘Wow.’ He’s only 19, but if he stays healthy the way he is, he’s going to be here probably sometime next year. I guarantee that.

Montero continued, discussing Bradley on a personal level:

He’s a good kid. He has a great personality; I like it. Seems like a great teammate. He’s dedicated, he wants to get better and he wants to play in the big leagues soon.

Bradley’s pure stuff has been the focus of the attention with his blazing fastball, as was stated by Diamondbacks’ minor league pitching coordinator Mel Stottlemyer, Jr.:

You know how some hitters, there’s a different sound off the bat? It’s a different look on how that ball comes out of his hand. We’ve got some other good arms out there; take nothing away from them. But this is different. We stay out of his way.

Bradley’s curveball has also gathered attention, as it was called a “knockout curveball” by Jim Shonerd at Baseball America and a “power curve” that is an above average pitch by Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. The most hyperbolic was Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus, stating that Bradley’s “power curve is an executioner pitch, thrown with impressive velocity and achieving a very late and heavy break. Scouts have not been shy about throwing a future 7 on the offering, saying it could miss bats at any level of professional baseball right now.”

After spring training, Bradley was assigned to the South Bend Silver Hawks of the A Level Midwest League. Bradley, the third youngest pitcher (only Raul Alcantara and John Barbato are younger) and 11th youngest player in the league, immediately began dominating the league. In Bradley’s first six starts, Bradley has gone at least five innings and allowed no more than two runs. Even after a poor seventh start (4 innings and 5 runs – 3 earned – against the Great Lakes Loons while giving up his first home run), Bradley’s statistics are imposing: 4-1 record and a 2.57 ERA with 38 strikeouts and only 13 hits over 35 innings. While Bradley has walked 21 batters, his 0.971 WHIP shows just how dominating he has been in his brief time in professional baseball.

So what should we expect from Bradley? Unless you are a fan of the Diamondbacks or in an exceptionally deep keeper league, Bradley probably will not be of relevance until late 2014, if not 2015. Bradley’s ability, coupled with his size (6’4″ and 225 pounds) and simple, easy delivery make him a top prospect based upon current ability, and he has the potential to become even better. In order to become the top of the rotation starter the Diamondbacks envisioned when they drafted him, Bradley will have to improve his command, sharpen his power curveball, and turn his average-at-best curveball into a solid third pitch.

Of course, so much could go wrong, as Dan Strittmatter of AZ SnakePit put it in his Diamondbacks’ top 30 prospect write-up:

[T]here’s still so much that could go wrong with Bradley’s development. … Lower-level arms are tantalizing to dream on, but the odds of them panning out as planned are disturbingly small, which is something to remember before declaring Bradley as a sure-fire bet to anchor the D-backs rotation in 2014.

But don’t sell Bradley short just because he was the 5th pitcher taken in the 2011 draft – he may have the most potential.

A few years ago, a friend of mine showed me a video on this acoustic guitar forum of a guy playing guitar. He wasn’t singing. He wasn’t standing. He wasn’t even playing.

He was fighting. He was fighting the guitar – and winning. This was when I first saw Trace Bundy. I was so amazed at his incredible skill and creativity and ninja abilities on the guitar. Being an acoustic lover, this was a great day for me.

Going online I bought his album/DVD combo, “Adapt.” I also sent him an email saying how much I enjoyed his work. Later on we got in contact and I was privileged to organize a show for him in Ada, OK, which I will always be grateful for.

Not only is Trace an amazing and creative guitar player, but he also is a stand up guy with a real heart for helping people. He has traveled and shared his music all over the world, and worked with several charities and groups.

His love for God, his family, and others is part of what makes his art genuine and captivating.

Here is the video that I first saw of his song, “Dueling Ninjas.”

Trace has several projects, including some great Christmas tunes, which appeal to any age and any audience. You can see more about Trace at http://www.tracebundy.com. Your support for him and his art is something I would highly recommend and hope that you would recommend to others.

Trace has a brand new album being released May 1, 2012 entitled “Elephant King.” From the samples he has shared, it is clear that the creativity and ninjauity being put into this project has taken on a whole new level. As time moves on, Trace’s songs and art continues to grow and captivate.

Top 5 Serial Killers We’ve all thought about it at one stage. You know what I mean. Pushing that one

Top 5 Serial Killers

We’ve all thought about it at one stage. You know what I mean. Pushing that one annoying person off a cliff whether it be the prick boss, ex doing much than you or just some random person who just spilled coffee on you in the street. Yes we have all at one stage or another just fleetingly imagined giving some bastard “what’s coming to them”. However, most of us (thus far) have managed to control these impulses and continue to live in repressed misery. Here is a list of what I believe are the top five serial killers of all time. Now many morbid people out there will probably read this and notice their favourite serial killer is missing. I will thus quickly outline the criteria that had to be met to appear on this list. Firstly, the murders had to be over a period of time and first degree murder. This immediately rules out the ever popular Charles Mansion (sorry fans) who never committed murder directly and of course Jim Jones who simply watched hundreds poisoning themselves. The murderer also had to have a clear identity thus ruling out the infamous Jack the Ripper and Zodiac Killer. Finally the murders had to have some particularly bizarre or macabre element, which is missing in the typical crime of passion or “misunderstood” teenager going on a killing spree at his school after listening to too much rock or hip hop.

1.Theodere Bundy

Background:

He is undoubtedly one of the most notorious serial killers of all time, which is clear in his continued portrayal in popular culture ranging from South Park to numerous torrid B-grade films. However, there is relatively little concise evidence for the motives behind his excessively violent and crude behaviour. In the midst of the never-ending nature versus nurture debate, some indications may be found in his early years. Ted Bundy was born illegitimately to a young, unmarried mother in 1946 who raised him to believe his grandparents were his actual parents and that she was his older sister. His biological father’s identity still remains unclear although it is speculated that his abusive, alcoholic grandfather might have impregnated his mother. Years later this information was said to enrage him and he later declared a life-long resentment to his family. His domestic situation further deteriorated when his mother married and four step-siblings soon followed.

However, the key catalyst has to be his relationship with a young woman Stephanie Brooks whom he met while studying at the University of Washington in 1967. He became fanatically obsessed with her leading her to dump him in 1968. It is no surprise that his murdering spree only began after the break-up and that all of his victims bore physical resemblance to Brooks. In fact a psychiatrist Dorothy Lewis would later declare the break-up as “probably the pivotal time in his development.” However, with his true psychopathic identity carefully hidden under the charming, handsome, intelligent Bundy facade, he graduated with Honours in Psychology and became a successful Republican campaigner.

The Crimes

It is unclear exactly when Bundy began killing or exactly how many victims endured his sadistic sexual fantasies usually ending in a slow death followed by extensive necrophilia. However, in 1974 a woman named Joni Lenz was admitted to hospital claiming to have been raped repeatedly by a bedpost. She endured permanent physical and psychological damage, but police were unable to match her description to any suspects. 1974 proved to be a productive year for Bundy with eight young women resembling Brooks going missing including two underage schoolgirls. After moving to Utah he killed four times more ironically including the daughter of a local police chief.

Signature Style

Bundy enjoyed extensively torturing his victims before relieving them of their lives. This included brutal rape often with objects such as speculums, cutting, biting, blunt force trauma, sodomy and then strangulation. He usually approached his victims by pretending to be injured or an authority figure thus gaining their trust so he could lead them into his car and a secluded location. A distinct Bundy trait is necrophilia as he would often visit his dumping sites and engage in intercourse with the rotting corpses until they were too badly decomposed to penetrate. He enjoyed applying make-up to them and washing them often spending entire nights with them. Like most serial killers he enjoyed keeping trophies in order to re-enact the crimes often retaining skulls.

First Arrest and Trial

Bundy was pulled over in August 1975 after police recognised his VW Beetle, which a woman, DaRonch, had reported to the police after a failed abduction. He pleaded not guilty despite DaRonch identifying him and a large amount of physical evidence. He appeared calm and confident in court, but was found guilty of aggravated kidnapping. He was sentenced to 15 years in 1976 only to be extradited to Colorado to be charged with the murder of Caryn Cambell. After receiving permission to represent himself, Bundy had access to a library for research and managed to jump out a window despite heavy security. His escape was short-lived as he was caught 8 days later attempting to flee the town. Bundy was not to be caged for long as he escaped yet again soon afterwards by climbing through a hanging ceiling panel. Bundy at this stage was wanted for murder in four states and the disorganisation of the various police forces in attempts to arrest him and compile a case against him was telling. He managed to take a flight to Chicago and travel to Florida where he adopted the name Chris Hagen.

While supporting himself through petty theft, Bundy sought more victims to satisfy his macabre thirst and in 1978 attacked a Florida State University sorority house. He violently raped four girls, two of which later died from their wounds. One was raped with a metal hairspray canister while another had an entire nipple almost completely severed and was bitten on her buttocks. Astonishingly he managed to escape the scene and avoid arrest by breaking into a nearby apartment and beating the female owner concussed, permanently brain damaged and deaf. Later in the year he abducted a 12 year old schoolgirl Kimberly Leach whom he raped and strangled in his preferred method.

Second Arrest and Trial

Unbelievingly Bundy was caught in a similar manner to his first arrest when he was pulled over by traffic police after not stopping for a routine pull-over. He was arrested and charged in 1979 for the murders and rapes of the sorority students. He was quickly found guilty despite his plea of innocence and received two life sentences via the electric chair. But the police were not done with him yet. Despite the two life sentences they charged him for the murder of Leach and he received another death sentence and guilty verdict after the jury dismissed his not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

Confessions and Death

Bundy then took every measure he could to prolong his death by exhausting all of his appeals over the course of a decade and even confessing to other murders in the hope his sentence would be watered down to life without parole. This is why the actual number of his murders are unknown as it is believed he confessed to some that he was not part of after another man’s DNA was found on one of his supposed victims. It is estimated his victims are in the range of 30 to 40, but this is a conservative guess with some sensationalists arguing for over a 100 victims. Despite his best efforts he was executed in 1989 in the electric chair then cremated. Somebody with a sense of humour then spread his ashes over the Washington State mountain, which was his favourite dumping site for bodies.

2. Dennis Nilsen

Background:

One of the most underrated and bizarre serial killers of the 20th Century, Nilsen was born in 1945 in Scotland. He endured his parents’ unhappy marriage, which resulted in divorce and moving to his grandfather’s at a young age. He adored his grandfather who suddenly died when he was six, which he claimed later caused him much trauma especially after seeing the open casket at the memorial service. His mother remarried and four step-siblings followed shortly. He was alienated and withdrawn at school repressing homosexual attraction to other boys and spending his time drawing morbid comics. A short career as a butcher in the army undoubtedly aided him in dismembering his victims later, but surprisingly he soon gave up this career in order to become a recruitment interviewer as it was more suited to his alcoholism. In 1975 he moved in with his partner, David Gallichan, who left him after two years, which deepened his alcoholism, loneliness and 18 months later he committed his first murder.

The Crimes

Nilsen claims to have killed, raped and dismembered 15 young men between 1978 and 1988. Like most serial killers there were several opportunities to catch him that were neglected due to slack police work. In 1978 he committed his first murder after bringing a man home from a gay bar and strangling him then drowning him in a bucket of water to prevent him from leaving. He later said he found the corpse to be ‘beautiful” and washed it lovingly in the bath before attempting to engage in intercourse with it. He hid the body under his apartment floorboards and removed it seven months later to burn and bury in the block’s backyard. Other victims of note include strangling a Canadian tourist, Ockedon, to death with an electrical cable then having sex with the body and taking photos of it before hiding it under his floorboards. He often would remove Ockedon’s body and spend time chatting to it as if he was still alive. In another case he murdered a 16 year old homeless boy and masturbated over the corpse. He would spray his rooms twice a day as flies began hatching on the corpses and simply told his neighbours he had a blocked drain when they complained of the smell.

Signature style

Nilsen’s victims were people living away from mainstream society thus less likely to be noted missing or receive full police attention. Most of his victims were male prostitutes, orphans and vagrants. He always lured them to his apartment where he would strangle them then resuscitate them for several hours before finally killing them by drowning. He would then wash the body, spend the night having sex with it and talking to it before taking lots of photos in order to re-enact the murder later. He would then hide the body in his floorboards for a few months before burying it in his backyard. When he moved to an apartment without a backyard and on the top floor in order to curb his killings, his methods changed. He would dissect the bodies naked on his kitchen floor and eat some of the flesh while feeding some to his pet cat. Then he would flush bits down the toilet and systematically every day put small pits in his rubbish.

Arrest and Trial

In 1983 his neighbours paid drain specialists to investigate the ever- persistent blocked drains and in the presence of Nilsen they found rotting human remains. When police entered his flat to question him and remarked on the foul odour, he calmly confessed claiming he had body parts in bags all over his flat. He was arrested and with no emotion or remorse he eagerly aided police in piecing together his crimes. He claimed to have killed 15 and attempted to have killed 7, but did not know their names. He provided old addresses and over 50 notebooks of memories to help the prosecution. During the trial he seemed ambivalent about his fate and was more concerned with his public image while he engaged in many interviews.

Later in 1983 he pleaded not guilty to six counts of murder and two attempted murder attempts by reason of diminished responsibility due to a mental defect. Two psychiatrists hired by the defence claimed his troubled childhood resulted in a separation from his body and mind while another diagnosed him with False Self Syndrome. This meant that he suffered from outbursts of schizoid disturbances rendering him incapable of premeditation. The judge undoubtedly influenced the jury decision by declaring in the summary that a mind could be evil without being abnormal. Not surprisingly he was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum serving time of 25 years.

Fun facts and quotes

He filed an application of human rights abuse when in 2001 he was denied by his governor access to the gay porn magazine “Vulcan”. The application was denied as it was established the prison rules were not discriminatory.

3. Fred West

Background:

Fred West, a serial rapist, child molester and serial killer, was born in 1941 in Herefordshire. He claimed to have enjoyed a good relationship with his parents despite also claiming that his father engaged in incestuous relationships with his sisters and taught him bestiality. He performed poorly at school resulting him dropping out to become a farm worker. He suffered several serious head injuries as a teenager including a motorcycle accident at 17 that left him in a coma and resulted in a surgery to put a metal plate in his head. According to some experts this might have resulted in a lack of impulse control.

Crimes and Relationships

He was often in trouble with the police for petty theft and allegedly having sex with minors until in 1961 he impregnated a girl of 13. He was convicted for child molestation, but escaped jail time due to his successful argument of blaming a lack of impulse control on his head trauma. Soon afterwards he married a Scottish burglar and prostitute named Rena Costello who was pregnant at the time with another man’s child. In 1963 she gave birth to a girl they named Charmaine. Unable to find steady employment he became an ice cream van driver, which gave him access to several young teenagers whom he molested. Rena, seemingly unaware of his bizarre sexual appetite, gave birth to their first child Anne-Marie in 1964. After moving to Glouchester there were quickly 8 reported incidents of sexual assault that were later linked to West. Rena soon moved back to Scotland leaving West with her children claiming he was unstable. He seemed unfazed and his new girlfriend, Ann, moved in with him in his caravan in 1967 after falling pregnant. After nagging him persistently to divorce Rena and marry her, he strangled her despite her heavily pregnant state, and buried her near the caravan park.

Shortly after this he met his infamous wife and accomplice, Rosemary Letts. She was born in 1953 to a depressed mother who had often undergone electro-convulsive therapy during pregnancy. This perhaps caused pre-natal injury, but another factor to consider would be her violent, abusive father. She began dating West at just 16 and in 1970 gave birth to their first child, Heather, at 17 while he was in jail for petty theft. She often exploded in sudden, violent bursts of behaviour and during one of these killed Fred’s eldest daughter Charmaine. Perhaps this was due to the pressure of raising children while still a child or perhaps she too suffered from a lack of impulse control due to some medical condition. When Fred was released from prison he agreed to help hide the body and it is believed could have used the murder to exert more control over his young girlfriend. Soon after the murder Rena returned from Scotland to look for her daughter resulting in Fred strangling, dismembering and burying her with Ann. In 1972 the two married and their second daughter, Mae, was born. They moved to the infamous 25 Cromwell Street and took in lodgers to help with the rent.

Signature style

West would engage in brutal sex games with his victims before finally strangling them and cutting off their toes and fingers before burying them. Upon moving to 25 Cromwell Street, they fitted their cellar with chains and other equipment to make it their own personal torture chamber. Their then eight year old daughter Anne-Marie was routinely horrifically raped by Fred while Rose held her down. Both of them exercised their bizarre sexual appetites in different ways. While Fred engaged in bondage and violent sex with underage girls, Rose was a part-time prostitute. In late 1972 they abducted their nanny Caroline Owens whom they tied up, stripped and took turns raping before they let her go threatening violence if she reported them. She reported them anyway, but the Wests escaped with fines after convincing police the sex was consential. Rose kept giving birth to children often fathered by customers. From 1972 to 1983 she gave birth to four more children. During this time eight more young girls were tortured, dismembered and buried under the cellar including two 15 year old school girls. Their children were frequently bullied into not reporting household activities and when Anne-Marie moved out to live with her boyfriend after having a miscarriage, Fred began raping her two younger sisters Heather and Mae. When Heather attempted to confide in a friend in 1986 about her father raping her and frequently filming the acts they murdered her and buried her in their garden making their son Stephen dig the hole.

Arrest and Trial

After years of violently raping women and not killing all of them, the Wests’ house was finally searched in 1992 after police could no longer ignore all the reports. They found evidence of child abuse and child porn resulting in the arrest of both Wests. Rose attempted suicide unsuccessfully shortly afterwards. The case against the Wests was slow in building as key witnesses refused to testify out of fear and their children were too well trained to speak out. In 1994, the police obtained a search warrant for the garden and cellar and discovered nine bodies. West confessed to all the murders claiming Rose had nothing to do with them and led police to his burial ground near the caravan park. He was charged with 12 counts of murder while Rose repeatedly distanced herself from him despite being arrested for assisting the murders. West either feared spending a life time in jail or was stunned by his wife’s claims of being another victim as he hanged himself in 1995 with bed sheets before being found guilty. This left Rose alone to face the music at trial later that year under the glare of the unforgiving media. Her daughter Anne-Marie and their ex-nanny Caroline testified that she participated in the raping of young women, which was not helped by her dishonesty on the stand. She was found guilty on ten counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years, which was later extended to life without parole by the Home Secretary. She still pleads her innocence to this day despite exhausting all her appeals.

4. Jeffrey Dahmer

Background:

Dahmer, a bizarrely frequent feature in popular culture, was born in 1960 in Milwaukee into a seemingly functional and happy family. At six years old he had a minor surgery which coincided with the birth of his brother, which resulted in him feeling neglected. His low self-confidence and isolation continued when shortly afterwards the family moved to Ohio. He was further affected by his parents’ unexpected break-up and messy divorce. He later claimed his desire for murder and necrophilia began at age 14 soon afterwards.

Crimes

Whilst still at school, Dahmer developed into a full-blown alcoholic. Just after graduating from high school he picked up a hitchhiker, Hicks, who he took to his father’s house, had sex with then bludgeoned to death with a barbell after he wanted to leave. He dismembered the corpse, packed it in plastic bags and buried them in the woods. His alcoholism worsened. After just one term at university in 1979 he dropped out due to alcohol abuse. His remarried father enlisted him in the army, but he was discharged in 1981 for alcoholism. Upon returning home he dug up Hick’s body, smashed it into smithereens with a hammer and scattered the pieces around in the woods. He was soon arrested for disorderly conduct and sent to live with his grandmother in Wisconsin.

However, his anti-social and erratic behaviour did not stop and in 1986 he was arrested for masturbating in front of two young boys. He received a mere slap on the wrist for this in the form of a one year probationary sentence. The following year he met his second victim, Toumi, in a gay bar, checked them both into a hotel, drank heavily and claimed to have forgotten how he killed him as he woke up the next morning and he was dead. He transported the body to his grandmother’s basement via a large suitcase, had sex with it, masturbated on it, dismembered it then threw the remains in rubbish cans. Before his grandmother kicked him out in 1988 he committed two more murders.

He moved back to Milwaukee where he enjoyed a thorough lack of police attention as he was a white man in a largely black neighbourhood. In 1988 he was arrested for sodomising a 13 year old Loation boy, but he got off with a 5 year probation sentence by claiming the boy looked older. He was eloquent, calm and intelligent at trial representing himself and claiming to have turned over a new page. Ironically during the trial he drugged, strangled, sodomised and dismembered another victim. This time an African American aspiring model by the name of Sears. Over the next months he killed 12 more boys and young men. The police ruined a chance to arrest him when in 1991 they received a phone-call from Dahmer’s neighbours that a 14 year old Asian boy running naked in the street and bleeding from his rectum. The boy, who ironically was the younger brother of the boy Dahmer was convicted of molesting, led them back his apartment. However, Dahmer managed to convince the police that the boy was his 19 year old lover who had drank too much. The police ignored the protests of Dahmer’s African American neighbours who claimed the boy was drugged and evidently scared of him. He strangled and killed the boy the same night even though a basic search of his apartment would have led the police to 12 bodies decomposing in the bedroom.

Signature style

His prey was primarily African American men, which has led many to believe racism as a motive behind his crimes. Serial killers usually prey on the sex they are physically attracted to and the same race, which makes this case even more unusual. Whatever the motive, he met most of them at gay bars and seduced them with laced alcohol before taking them back to his place where he strangled them. After they were dead he would engage in intercourse with the body, masturbate on it, dismember it and dispose of the body via rubbish bags. However, he would often keep genitals or skulls as souvenirs and take photos of the victims during each stage of murder in order to re-live it later. Necrophilia is often associated with control issues and Dahmer experimented extensively with his victims. Often he attempted lobotomies by drilling into the living victim’s skull and injecting them with Muriatic acid to see if they would become paralysed. All died instantly, but one who remained in a zombie-state for a few days. He also experimented by eating various parts of flesh and trying out various chemicals to dissolve bodies in.

Arrest and trial

In 1991, the local police picked up a young African American, Tracy Edwards, roaming the streets with a handcuff on his wrist. Despite being heavily drugged by Dahmer, he managed to lead police back to the apartment, where they went searching for the knife that he was allegedly threatened with. Instead they found gruesome photos of hacked up bodies, dismembered heads in the fridge, endless jars of preserved genetalia and more heads in the freezer. He was immediately arrested.

His trial in 1992 was highly controversial as the community believed racial motives were behind his brutal murders. During trial he had to stand in front of a 8 foot bullet proof barrier separating him from the gallery. He plead guilty via the insanity plea and like those before him attempted to focus on the brutality of the crimes by co-operating with police to uncover every detail of his murders. His strategy had the opposite effect and he was pronounced guilty on all charges and sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms totally 957 years in prison. After being initially being kept separate from the rest of his inmates for his own safety, he insisted he be allowed to join them. 1994 he escaped an attack with a razor blade with only a flesh wound, but died later that year from having his skull crushed by a schizophrenic African American murderer, Chris Scarver. Scarver was assigned to work with Dahmer and a white supremacist murderer Jesse Anderson, but managed to kill both within 20 minutes of being left alone with them. After Dahmer’s death, the city of Milwakee feared his fans would purchase his belongings, thus bought and burnt all his possessions.

Fun facts and quotes:

“This is the grand finale of a life poorly spent and the end result is just overwhelmingly depressing…a sick, pathetic, miserable life story, that’s all it is.”

“I should have gone to college and gone into real estate and got myself an aquarium, that’s what I should have done.”

Dahmer’s parents, both whom are advocates for creationists, continue to claim they love their son despite his murders.

In 1992 Hart Fisher published a comic book depicting his life

He appears in an episode of South Park to retrieve Satan’s birthday cake with Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy.

5. John Wayne Gacy

Nicknamed the Killer Clown for his fondness of dressing up as a clown and entertaining sick children in hospital, Gacy was born into a middle class Irish Catholic family in 1942. He received a violent head-blow in a playground accident at 11 that result in blackouts until he was 16. Despite his father being a homophobic, abusive, alcoholic, he hero-worshipped him. After dropping out of school he enrolled in business school and was a highly successful management trainee at a footwear company in Illinois. He participated in several charities and volunteer organisations including helping and entertaining terminally ill children at hospitals. In 1964 he married Marlynn Myers and moved to Iowa where he was a manager of his father-in-law’s fast food restaurant. He appeared to be living the American Dream with his beautiful wife and two children and he aimed to one day be the president of the volunteer group Jaycee. However, rumours of making sexual advances to young employees in the restaurant soon began to surface.

Crimes and Relationships:

It is unclear when he began molesting and sodomising young men and boys, but in 1968 he was indicted for allegedly sodomising a teenage employee by the name of Mark Miller. He was charged with sodomy despite his claims that the sex was consentual and that his rivals within Jaycee were attempting to ruin his chances of presidency. Four months later he was charged with hiring a man to beat up Miller resulting in a court ordered psychiatric evaluation whereby he was declared fit for trial and unlikely to benefit from medical intervention. After pleading guilty to both charges he was sentenced to 10 years in jail, but before he was released 18 months later for “good behaviour” his wife divorced him. He moved to Chicago never seeing his wife and kids again.

He soon became popular by throwing large parties on his ranch-style house and gained a reputation for being generous by his neighbours who were unaware of his jail time. However, soon his was charged with forcing a young boy to commit sexual acts, but the charges were dropped after the boy disappeared. During his lavish parties his friends would often complain of a foul odour, which he would always dismiss as being moisture building up in the crawl-space under his house. In 1972 he married again this time to a divorcee by the name of Carole Hofren with two daughters from a previous marriage. Shortly afterwards in 1974 he began his own home decorating business PDM Contractors, which he used to gain access to several teenage male employees who he molested and sodomised. By 1975 his wife could no longer bear his violent mood swings or his obsession with gay porn, which he no longer bothered hiding so she divorced him.

His wife’s departure affected him deeply and the murders became increasingly frequent. He later claimed he often killed more than one boy a day after she left. At the same time he was fascinated by politics and became obsessed with the Democratic Party, one day dreaming of running for public office. However, the rumours of him molesting and sodomising children prevented him from rising above local commissioner. In 1978 he lured a young man Ringall into his car with the promise of marijuana, but he drugged him and sadistically raped him then dumped him alive and naked in a local park. He had to be hospitalised and later filed charges of sexual assault against Gacy.

Arrest

When Gacy was eventually arrest in 1978 he claimed to have killed 33 boys between 1972 and his arrest. He was caught after a 15 year old boy went missing and police traced the boy to Gacy’s home as he had spoken of being offered a job there. A search warrant was quickly granted given Gacy’s previous convictions and a pile of drivers’ licenses and college rings were found, but no bodies. However, when some of the rings were linked to missing boys through forensic testing, a further search warrant was granted to search the house’s grounds. Days of digging uncovered a total of 27 bodies. In an attempt to broker a deal Gacy confessed to three more bodies, which he dumped in a nearby river after his crawl space became full.

Signature Style:

His most common tactic was to lure boys home by promising to show them magic tricks. He would then handcuff them claiming the pair was fake and part of the trick. He proceeded to drug them, strip them, gag them with their own underwear then torture and rape them for a lengthy period of time. Once he was satisfied he would simply garrotte or asphyxiate them. He like many serial killers targeted boys that were vulnerable and not likely to be noticed by mainstream society like gay prostitutes. However, he also used his authority in whichever business he was in to take advantage of young male employees.

Trial

In 1980 he plead guilty by reason of insanity to all 33 charges, arguing that his extreme co-operation in the case proved he was insane. His lawyer went to painstaking lengths to emphasise the viciousness of the crimes in order to try prove he was not in control of himself, which was supported by emotional testimonies of surviving victims and psychiatrists. However, testimonies from his friends and family convinced the jury that he was a ration being who premeditated his actions and he was found guilty on all charges. It took the jury just two hours to decide on the verdict. Once sentenced to death, Gacy took up an interest in oil painting and was particularly fond of painting clowns. He used up all his appeals over the course of 14 years and was put to death via lethal injection in 1994. He never showed any remorse for his actions.

Fun facts and quotes

All of his paintings were sold to one bidder after he died. It is rumoured that they were all destroyed by this bidder.

“Clowns can get away with murder”

“Kiss my ass”- final words before being executed.

a crowd of over a thousand people gathered outside the prison where he was executed and they wore colourful shirts proclaiming “no tears for the clown”.

This book is ostensibly a TV show tie-in book but could also be categorised as true crime as it catalogues different serial killers and other offenders who have been mentioned in the show, “Criminal Minds”. These killers are split into categories and Mariotte explains a little about their background before their offending began and then also details their offences, how they escaped detection initially and how they were eventually caught. He also details which episodes they have been mentioned in and in some cases how they resemble the killers on the show. Obviously the cases on “Criminal Minds” aren’t real but some of them have been inspired by real events and this is all covered in Mariotte’s book.

As far as a work of true crime goes, Mariotte covers that many cases he is unable to go into any of them in a huge amount of detail, some cases warrant more attention than others but even the longest entries don’t give you all the details. It is a good starting point though, if you wanted to know more about a specific person or case you could then get books based specifically on them or turn to the Internet for more information. It is also very detailed as far as referencing which episodes each case is mentioned in, up to the show’s 5th season, which is obviously when this book was written.

I found his writing style very enjoyable and thought he did a good job covering all the cases mentioned on the show, even some of the slightly more obscure ones. Would definitely recommend it to any fan of the show or if you were looking for a starting point in getting to know more about serial killers but there are definitely better books out there if you’re a bit of a true crime buff.

UBU Review #3: Ian Kerkhof – “Ten Monologues from the Lives of the Serial Killer” In 1994

UBU Review #3: Ian Kerkhof – “Ten Monologues from the Lives of the Serial Killer”

In 1994, Dutch filmmaker Ian Kerkhof’s short film, “Ten Monologues from the Lives of the Serial Killer” was released. With a combination of facts and fiction, ten mini-shorts about Psychopaths and sociopaths are seen of the screen. Each person being focused on is seen in different ways. The monolouges have conversations of killers and sociopaths present as non-diegetic sounds. One of them has a man sitting in a quiet room as Edmund Emil Kemper’s voice is heard narratively, while a camera circles him. One is heard chanting tales of who shot who in poetic form from J G Ballard’s Book, “Crash.” One is heard speaking over is childhood home videos of him and his dad, as he explains how his dad molesting and raping him affected him. One speaks the words of Charles Manson to an interviewer on his being released even though he wanted to stay in prison, and what he did when he was released. One man is seen as he masturbates to rape videos, as the voice of Ted Bundy is heard speaking about his obsession with violence and sexual desires. One narrates as he follows a victim. At one point glimpses of all the videos are seen creating a collage. A mixture of as an intermission or transition between the shorts, there is a mixture of music inspired by Jeffrey Dahmer from the rap group the Geto Boys. The mixture of cinematography, editing, music, and choices of narration make this film an experimental, morbid collage of art, that everyone interested in the dark mind should experience.
