So, first off, I’ve been receiving a lot of nice comments about this blog since I’ve started! Granted, the feedback has mostly been from supportive friends and no one that I don’t know personally but still, I want to say thank-you for the positive compliments on starting this blog. As a friend Sarah called it, apparently some of you find this “legitimately interesting” so I’ll continue to update, even when I should be doing other final assignments as this semester in school wraps up–most of the work I have left to do is for my independent study in dramaturgy. What irony!

So, on with the entry.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned yet that Dave and I have tenatively picked out the city in which we will teach English, called Osaka. More stats on the city later, but suffice it to say that it is second only to Tokyo in population, and not far away from the fair capital at that.

To be more specific.

I did some (very) minor research on the city’s theatres, and I found a few seemingly good large ones. I plan on doing a bunch of entries on the theatre available in Osaka, and I’m going to start with Bunraku theatre, since it was the only type of theatre I hadn’t heard of before.

The National Bunraku Theatre is conveniently located right in Osaka, and it dates back to 1684, being the first facility to host this form of theatre.

Simply put, Bunraku theatre is a form of puppet theatre. As I said, it dates back to the late 1600s but it went out of style for a while. It was revived by a man named Bunrakuza in the late 19th century, and thus the form of puppetry is named after him. Nowadays the Japanese will refer generally to any type of puppetry as Banraku, but it’s actually meant for the puppetry specifically in Osaka. Puppet troupes in Japan outside of Osaka will refer to their type of puppetry with other names.

The puppets can be small (think: two feet) or bigger (think: four feet and up) and usually take three people to manipulate. The person who works the feet is the lowest ranking puppeteer, followed by the person working the left hand, followed by the person bringing the head and face to life. In respective order, these are the ashizukai, the sashizukai, and the omozukai. To get to be an omozukai, it can take thirty years of training.

I think the puppets themselves are just beautiful:

What does the guy on the left have on his feet?

I love the script in her hands

I plan on updating this post during this week with more information; right now I have to run off. For now, here are some interesting links if you feel so inclined.

Here is the link to Japan’s National Theatre website. I’ve set it to go directly to their section of Bunraku. And to get a dose of your local puppetry theatre (local at least if you’re in Maritime Canada like me), here’s the website for Mermaid Theatre, which might I add has done some private performances for the emperor of Japan and his family.

Thanks for reading! Shameless self-promotion: Don’t forget to bookmark me or subscribe. Cuz you know you want to.

Sorry to burden you with this. I don’t want to use my blog for personal appeals, but I’m hoping someone out there can help. I’ve been trying to view a film called Sonezaki Shinju / Love Suicides at Sonezaki (Midori Kurisaki, 1980), and it’s proving to be a bit of a slippery customer. I can’t even find any pictures from it online, though I’ve seen some stills in a 1989 issue of Cinefantastique.

The film is a rare recording of a bunraku production of the play by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, who wrote it specifically for the Japanese puppet theatre. It’s probably the most famous of all his bunraku tragedies. The lead puppeteer was Tamao Yoshida, who was designated a “living national treasure” for his decades of service to Japanese cultural life. It is also, to my knowledge, the only time that the official bunraku troupe were persuaded to take their puppets outdoors for shooting in natural locations. The film was shot by Kazuo Miyagawa, who has an extraordinary track record of cinematography credits working for Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa. If you’ll excuse a little bit of hyperbole, there is nothing of its kind anywhere in world cinema. And I’d quite like to see it.

It was released on laser disc in 1998, but has long since gone out of print. I’ll be happy with VHS or DVD, with or without English subtitles, and I’ll travel a reasonable distance to watch it in an archive. If you think you can help, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m probably needy enough to pay good money. We tend to think that the internet makes all films accessible to us, and I’ve certainly seen a lot of movies that I would otherwise probably never have been able to see, but just as often it teases us with enticing works that are just out of reach…

Bunraku Poster, obviously

Bunraku, a World Intangible Heritage designated by UNESCO is a long practiced preforming art in Japan. Exposing my ignorance, I had long thought that Bunraku was performed by people wearing masks which could be interpreted from the poster above. Not so. Throughout the performance three puppeteers per puppet controlled the actions of the colorfully dressed characters. Each puppeteer wore a gaudy black robe with hood, that one could connect with the KKK, exposing zero skin. One controlled the head and the others controlled the arms and legs on each side. From my first perspective of Bunraku, the gaudyness of the puppeteers took away from the intamacy an audience is to develop with the characters of the performance.

However, maybe the more unique aspect of the performance was the rotation of side staged narrators with accompanying musician(s) supporting samuri esk attire. The puppets don’t actually talk themselves but through said narrator that does all of the voices with expressive faces with jumping eyebrows, solo for some of the play until later when some five narrators and musicians take the side stage each taking a character.

The curtain before my camera was shushed

Catching a play – this one was dubbed Sunshine After the Storm an adaption of Shakespeare’s The Tempest - at the national theater was a treat though there were some drawbacks. More pictures of the performance would have been posted if I wasn’t asked to put my camera away before the play started. Hawks they were! Also, taking away from the show was the lack of intermission though only 2 hours but I found that I needed a break mid way, but that could have been simply from the lack of knowing what the hell the characters were getting on about even though I had a rented translation earphone guide. The guide only introduce segments and gave updates mid way but much was lost as maybe only 10 minutes of narration was given for the two hour play. I was also whispering updates to my new friend Sibelle, via Switzerland and Brazil, who didn’t rent the guides until a Japanese woman, in traditional wear, that was sitting next to me, shushed me by tugging at my arm (not blocking her view) and rambling something in the mother tongue. I was SHUSHED! First my camera and now my mouth. I don’t even fit the loud American stereotype! Whats a guy to do? No pictures, no whispering, no English. I think they take their Bunraku seriously.

Even so it was refreshing experience traditional Japanese art though at a hefty 500 Yen or somthing around $60 US. A high price for silence but peanuts for the opportunity to see one of the world’s intangible treasures and experience.

On my way from Sasebo, Nagasaki to Osaka, via the highly sexy and fast Shinkasen, my new found train companion and highly engaging Prof. Hiroshi, of Japan, suggested that I look like Tom Hanks. This is not the first I have heard this reference and still my mind ponders the resemblance.

Also, which Tom Hanks are we talking about? A younger Hanks in “Big,” the more experienced in “Saving Private Ryan”? Or maybe Woody?

Befuddlement continued at the National Bunraku Theater when my beautiful Bunraku perfomance companion Ms. Sibelle, of Switzerland/Brazil, asked if I was part Asian. This was a first. My family heritage is something of a mut’s: German, Scottish, English, Cherokee Indian – or so I am told. Asian I thought I bore no resembalance but when in Rome eh?

This prompted me to put the question to my family; have they ever been asked if they were of Asian decent? To my surprise my youngest sister and father both promptly responded confirming they had. Odd. My next question was, “Where was Mom cerca 1982?” My Dad’s response, “Where was your mother in early 1982? Under the sheets with the stud, ME, thats who!!!”

So, if 2 +2 = 4, then is Tom Hanks Asian? Woody included.

I had a vision yesterday. I didnt see dead people, I wasn’t led through a metaphorical desert

I had a vision yesterday.

I didnt see dead people, I wasn’t led through a metaphorical desert by a naked Native American, nor was I beckoned to the end of a pier by the heavenly Jennifer Connelly. No, it wasn’t normal like that. But, I did see the future, and it was glorious. So what was this vision right? Well, I was sitting in my chair at work staring at my wall (like you do) when all of a sudden it struck me like a bag of soap bars. The most perfect show to ever grace the interwebs/airwaves could be, nay SHOULD be an Indie/electropop/dance music puppet-talk-show. That’s right, let it soak in.

Imagine puppets presenting an indie band showcase. Fun music, bright colors, and beards everywhere. Interesting guests would be interviewed by creatures made of felt and glue; materials to disarm even the trendiest of trendy. Random 80s/90s pop culture clips might show up completely out of context to make zero sense but get 4 million hits on youtube. With short witty off-the-wall humor a la Space Ghost Coast to Coast or Mystery Science Theatre 3000 the audience would remain interested but not overburdened by reflections on the real world. Jeremy Irons would be the announcer. So clearly this doesnt need to be a comedy show, but good wit is always welcome. The show wouldn’t be highly informative, just light and entertaining. Kind of like that song you listen to that you can’t explain why but you finish listening with an undeniable feeling of happiness and hope. You know, the way the Jonas Brothers touch you deep inside Or the feeling you get from playing with a kitten (assuming you’re not allergic to them).

Yes, this is a vague description, I know. But last time I checked random visions didn’t come in detailed business plans. Meow I dont want to forget the lifeblood of the show; the music. So who would be on? This of course makes or breaks the whole premise of my show. Well, groups like Futurecop! and Passion Pit of course. Or Friendly Fires and Peter Bjorn and John. of course of course of course….

Happier yet? See, the future came to me in a flash of brilliant light and pixie dust and by the time it was over I was left trying to comprehend the beauty that was haphazardly etched into my brain matter. So, if you don’t get it at first it’s okay. I mean c’mon meow, indie pop and dance music are just plain awesome. And what’s cooler than a bunch of puppet creatures interacting:? Nothing. Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.

Really, I think it’s perfect. Follow my logic.

Indie/electropop/dance music doesnt get the mainstream attention it deserves, a talk show outside of the major music channels would help give more exposure to good music.

Most of the music is very upbeat and fun, lending itself very well to a setting where puppets (who can also be upbeat and fun) do all the presenting

It has worked before*

I’m not talking about Bunraku or anything crazy like that, i’m talking good ole fashioned americanized Jim Henson style puppets. They’re fun!

There have been numerous shows to use puppets as the main focus and a ton of them were fantastic.

We all grew up with puppets so its nostalgic and ironic and we can make more t-shirts and stuff.

*Okay i’ll admit that Muppets Tonight did not fare as well, but I think it was ahead of the game!

Now some people might erroneously assume that the glimpse I caught of a better future is of no value to mankind. Bollocks. This show will save the world. No seriously. Hear me out.

Muppet

Like I mentioned before, the music talk show would be full of upbeat uptempo pure indie/electro pop bliss. It’s going to be scary how happy people are after watching this show. Smiling suburban zombies everywhere. Zombies kick ass. But it doesnt stop there. This show can do so much more:

New T-Shirts? Potentially infinite. Includes slogans like “I’m a muppet.”

World Peace? That shit will be solved after two episodes.

Bono? Yeah since there’s world peace then he’ll have nothing to talk about and he can finally shut up about saving it. Maybe he’ll talk about poverty reduction, but somehow that will be gone because of the show too. You’re overthinking it.

Green living? Puppets don’t breathe. And we’ll put solar panels on them or something. We’re saving the planet bitches.

Boredom? This shit is crazy…yo.

muppet

I get night time talk shows, they serve a very important purpose and allow people to veg out in front of the tv and hear a few lighthearted jokes. So this show wouldnt really have to compete with Late night talk shows, but obviously it’d be styled with a nod to them. I think they’re a little stuffy personally. For example, I’m not happy watching Letterman. I can only get marginally less unhappy (so I guess it’s making me happier?). Does he even like any of the acts that are on his show anymore, because it really just seems like he tolerates them. How much cooler would the Late Show be with puppets? Answer: substantially.

So if this is the future then why hasnt it been done yet? Fear.

C’mon and ride the train into the future! PUPPETS!

I spent all of theatre today writing my critique, great fun of course! *slight sarcasm implied* No but really it wasn’t that bad, I feel a lot better about acknowledging my sources and it is amazing to realise how much you actually rely on them for this investigation and how much you’ve learnt from them!! I used the structure I used for last year in my Bunraku investigation which is:

-Write a brief background about the source

-Write about how you used it in your research investigation

-Write about how useful it was to you

This was really helpful in structuring my critique. I also split it up into published works, websites and documentaries. I think my examiner will appreciate that I went beyond books and especially websites, at least I hope so! I still need to finish my critique, I mainly wrote on one particular source which was really influential on what I wrote in my research investigation which was a documentary called “Vaudeville” which introduced me to the history of Vaudeville. I am happy to see how far I have come, it has been an absolute massive learning curve, I remember when I wasn’t even pronouncing the word ‘Vaudeville’ correctly!! I am happy I have written this research investigation as it really gives you an insight into something you never thought you would study in your whole entire life, it is amazing to see how interesting and eye-opening other unique forms of theatre are. I am even beginning to notice influences of Vaudeville in comedy shows on television today, such as the popular show “Two and a Half Men” where there is practically a two-act for the entire show!!

Next: Finishing my critique and reviewing my research investigation. Once this has been completed, it’s time to start the IPP!!

I knew that bunraku (also known as ningyō jōruri) was a relatively open art, with many troupes across the country, each with a slightly different style and repertoire, many of them inviting foreigners to study puppetry with them. (This is in contrast to, for example, kabuki, which is a relatively closed world where women and foreigners cannot enter, where one must be formally adopted into one of the families in order to become a kabuki actor, and in which there is only one set of troupes and one set of theatres and one set of performance schedules)

But I did not know that there is a US-based bunraku troupe, recognized, apparently, by whom I’m not entirely sure, but recognized as “official”, “real” bunraku in some respect.

Martin Holman, professor of Japanese language and literature at the University of Missouri, claims that his bunraku troupe, featured in a Japan Times article today, and consisting chiefly of university students, is indistinguishable from a professional group… or would be, if the ethnicities/nationalities of its members were to be disguised.

I don’t mean to sound skeptical. I think it’s an incredible thing… an incredible opportunity for the students, to have a troupe so readily accessible to them, and for venues across the US, who would otherwise have to pay to fly a troupe from Japan, along with all their equipment.

I am so tired. I even took a two hour nap dinner. Then, I slept through half of dinner because they let me sleep.

I’ve just been up late for a couple nights and waking up increasingly more tired each day. So, it was a bit of a effort staying awake for the whole Bunraku performance. Not because it was boring, but just because it’s a bit slow and about the art, not the action.

Plus, the story is narrated by a guy offstage singing it in a very dramatic way. So, even if I knew the words, which I didn’t, it’s hard to understand anyway.

Bunraku, by the way, is the Japanese traditional puppet theatre. Which, I guess might sound lame to people thinking of Harry Potter Puppet Pals (or sweet because you’re thinking of the same), but it’s actually very complicated and takes skill to perform. The dolls are big and controlled by three people each. The intent is for the dolls to move and look like real people, which I think is different from Western puppets, which tend to look like puppets.

The dolls and the people controlling them only do the movements, while the story is sung by a dramatic voice artist to the accompaniment of a shamisen, played by a second person.

It’s pretty sweet. I would encourage you to see it, but to drink have some caffeine or be well-rested beforehand. Bunraku grew up at the same time as kabuki, so they’re similar in some ways, but also very different and enjoy varying degrees popularity. Kabuki, usually being most popular.

Anywho, I’m glad I got to see it because my professor at Mizzou has the only Bunraku troupe outside of Japan and runs a summer program in Ida, Japan, for students to learn with a professional troupe there. So, I’d probably fail this semester if I didn’t go.

Other than the actual performance, I went with my お母さん, so we talked a lot. A lot, for me, maybe not for Japanese people. Which was good and fruitful and what I should be doing, but also hard and tiring and sometimes more effort than I wanted to put into it. It pays off though in getting to learn about her life and sharing my own. Today she told me how romantic love and marriage are two separate things. I know that a lot of non-Western cultures practice this, but it still kind of depressed me. I know she loves my お父さん, but I think I like to impose on them my understandings of love and romance and what that looks like, which is not what it looks like to Japanese. In ways I think there is merit in loving someone because you live with them and get to know them and know they’re a good match for you. Perhaps more so than physical attraction and attraction to certain characteristics that make relationships hard, yet Westerners glorify and make movies out of.

However, that’s my conception of romance because I am very much a product of American society. I will always support the eloped couple or the our-love-conquers-all kind of sentimentality. But, that wasn’t where I meant to go with this post. The point is, we talked about lots of things and I watched some sweet dancing puppets. Day made. Goodnight!
