Navegando por “la red de redes” me he encontrado con una desagradable noticia (por lo menos para mí). Y es que la banda de metal “Burst” se despide de todos el próximo 18 de diciembre en Göteborg, donde darán su último concierto.

Este último concierto promete ser épico ya que se compondrá de dos sets. En el primero, tocarán su álbum “Lazarus Bird” completo y, en el segundo, muchas de sus temas inéditos que durante todos estos años han ido componiendo. Seguro que saldrá algún cd/dvd con este concierto.

“Burst” surgió en Suecia en 1993 haciendo temas de hardcore punk. Pero poco a poco fueron modificando y mejorando su estilo, convirtiéndolo en un metal progresivo con toques de rock. Voces limpias mezcladas con otras más guturales dan a sus temas una sintonía perfecta.

Esta progresión les llevó a fichar por “Relapse Records” y abrir escenarios por delante de bandas como “Mastodon” o “The Dillinger Escape Plan”.

Una lástima que la banda desaparezca. Por lo menos nos quedan sus cinco álbumes: “Two Faced”, “Conquest: Writhe”, “Prey on Life”, “Origo” y “Lazarus Bird”.

I was just outside, and it smells like snow. It’s about 37 degrees out, and it’s raining. The forecast is for light snow off and on throughout the night. I don’t know why, but I’m excited for the snow this year. It’s almost like it was when I was a kid, and I’d start to smell snow in the air, and I’d start daydreaming about snow angels and scarves and snowmen and climbing the mountain of snow that the snowplow pushed up next to the garage. I’d start yearning for the feel of the cold sharp air on my cheeks, the slight burn on my fingers when they got too cold after the snow melted through my mittens. And the beautiful silence. That utterly pristine silence that you only hear when outside in the dead of winter when it’s snowing and there’s no one else around. It’s a silence that has always made me feel so joyful that I have tears well up in my eyes and my heart feels as though it might burst. I don’t know why I love it so, but I always have. And it’s been a few years since I’ve taken the time to seek out that silence, to quiet my self enough to enjoy it, to let it fill me, to let it energize and heal me. To take in the beauty of this earth while everything is silent, but still so alive.

I guess I need to get myself some warm boots this winter.

Canon 7D Double Trouble???

The word on the street that there is problem with Canon’s 7D where it will show during burst mode it will show the preceding frame. I have not seen this myself when shooting with the 7D, but i have not done alot of shooting with this camera.

Well…. phew! It feels like it’s been forever since we started City Year, and truthfully it’s been less than 2 months. My team’s only been in our school full-time since the beginning of October, and already I have sooo many stories. That being said… I think some other members of my team have much more difficult classrooms and I feel I’m lucky to be able to say some days it sounds like a bad day in my classroom is a great day in theirs. My third graders are adjusting fairly well to the shuffling around of teachers and classmates, and though I’m still getting to know the “new” students in our class (I arrived yesterday after a long weekend to find there’s yet another one!) I think it’s still a pretty great mix of kids. There’s one child whose behavior has taken a real downturn recently and he’s currently suspended. He’s frustrating, because he’s actually pretty smart: when he isn’t sassing around or freaking out in the hallway (yup, that’s right… they pretty much think they can come to class when they want to. They’re 9!). He can also be a pretty downright hilarious kid when he’s in a good mood. It’s just that he hasn’t responded really well to any kind of positive reinforcement and he seems to feed off negative energy. Ahhh…. behavior modification fascinates me. I think because I love the problem solving aspect, I truly and wholeheartedly care about these kids, and I have the tendency to see potential where others sometimes don’t (this has failed me in the past, but usually is a good thing).

That brings me to my high point of the day — there’s a child in my class who quickly stole my heart when he became one of the first in the class to memorize my name (some of them still call me by the special education resource teacher’s name — she was co-teaching in there for a little while). It was about day 2 after I’d received my permanent class assignment and I was walking in the front of the building when I heard “MISS CLAIRE!!”. This child was calling out to me so he could introduce me to his friend… and I of course had no idea yet what his name was without ‘cheating’ off his desk tag. I asked him to help me come up with a rhyme to help me remember and he promptly told me his grandmother sings a song with his name in it…. super cute. As I walk away, I hear him say to his friend: “She’s my City Year girl!!!”.

Well, to make a long story shorter, this child has the worst anger management issues in the classroom and with other kids. He’s actually a total and complete sweetheart, he’s VERY smart, and outside of class (when he’s one-on-one with an adult) he’s articulate and fun to be around. But oh man….. correct him, bump him in line, look at him the wrong way…. and he about turns into a cartoon character with steam coming from his ears. He’ll yell, throw things, stomp (he’s not a small child either).

At any rate, he’s had a great few days (a big improvement) in the classroom and I have to feel like some of that is due to some of my one-on-one attention and coaching. He adores positive feedback. Today I left the class for the 2nd half of the day, and told him how proud I was of him for how mature he’d been acting for the past few days and what a great morning he’d been having (especially compared to some of my other kids today — ah!). Of course, when I saw him later in the day I gave him a high five, reiterated the above, and asked about his afternoon. “Well Miss Claire…. it was good. Until music class when my ears really started hurting and ____ wouldn’t stop playing the drums and so….. I sort of got mad and hit her.” hahahaha…. oh man. It’s like a winning streak in sports — never lasts! The important thing, I told him, is that he’s getting much better and handling himself much more calmly. So YAY for little victories.

The rest of what I’ve been doing is testing…. not so thrilling. It’s neat because the system we’re using utilizes little palm pilots that are pre-programmed to score responses based on complicated algorithms… and once all the kids are tested it will be a GREAT, extensive baseline to have. Kids will be re-assessed every few weeks (briefly, as in 5 min. or so of short measures) and kids who need it get specialized, individually tailored lessons based on their baseline/progress. But it’s sooooo time intensive and Ms. S and I have so many kids to finish testing before the end of the week. Boooo. Check out more info on the cool systems they’re using here and here. I’m sure I’ll have more opinions on the effectiveness as the year goes on but right now, I think it’s a pretty nifty idea.

So pretty much — problem behavior management and statistics/evaluation?!?!? What more could this Psych major ask for?

I thank my Jesus (and the City Year admissions team! ha!) every day for a job where I truly feel like my heart’s in what I’m doing, where I feel like I’m making a difference, and where I’m learning something from these kids every day. I love it.

Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday) is going to have a go at some 3-D horror according to Heat Vision.

Marshall will direct Burst 3D for Ghost House Pictures, a film that puts him back in business with Lionsgate, which distributed The Descent.

Ghost House partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce which is pretty cool. Marshall and Raimi making a horror film.

The story is about a group of stranded travelers who meet during a blizzard and get stalked by a malevolent force that makes people spontaneously combust. That should be perfect for the 3D effects. In fact it makes it sound like one of those gimmicky films from the 50s which may be a good or a bad thing.

Marshall, the editor-turned writer/director is currently working on Centurion, the period film that stars Michael Fassbender. A group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is ambushed during the Roman invasion of England in 117 A.D. I posted some new photos of that a few days ago.

Comparado aos 23F de antes (GGXXS), o Burst ativa em 19F na versão GGAC, ou seja, está consideravelmente mais rápido. Por isso, surgiu uma dúvida: onde seria adequado usar o Burst para que ele sempre acerte?

Mas não basta acertar, o que todo player quer é soltar um Burst certo para causar o maior prejuízo possível ao adversário.
Então, iremos checar mais uma vez o uso do Burst. Vamos ver algumas regras e dicas de um Burst efetivo para frustrar o oponente.

Para não desperdiçar o Burst e correr riscos, primeiro é bom ter claro na mente onde ele deve ser usado.

O básico do Burst Azul: ele é seguro em OTG. Mesmo que seja defendido e o oponente revide, o ataque será considerado OTG, então é um jeito fácil de minimizar o prejuízo.

O player que não quer se preocupar com o uso de Burst, será pressionado pela possibilidade de Burst dourado ou Burst azul (OTG).

Além disso, como não é possível soltar Burst azul ao levar knockdown de um throw (e overdrive), ao levantar com um Burst de reversal ele sempre será dourado.

One of the sacrifices that comes with writing/performing speed rap is that, well, if you do it too much, the muscles in your mouth literally get tired.

It comes with the territory.

How true that is when it comes to speed rapping.  If you’re a speed rapper, you’ll know the following to be of utmost importance when writing lyrics:

• Syllable count.
• Streaming vs. bursting (I’ll get to these in a bit).
• The beat.

Ironically, the slower the BPM of a beat is, the easier it is to speed rap on it.  50-60bpm is ideal.  70-80 isn’t shabby, 90+ gets harder and harder.

This is, of course, if you rap in English.

I could go on and on about the the subject, but I’ll save some of it for a later post.  I think I might write up a series on speed rap and how to do it properly.

Getting back to my original point, when I practice speed-rap, there really is no room for error, only room for wasted time.  When I practice a line or a bar, it’s got to be CORRECT.  The more retries I have to do it, the harder it will get as I put more strain on my tongue, jaw muscles, and voice.

Here’s a couple examples of what it’s like to speed rap.  Go ahead.  Try em.

Streaming is a technique in which you rap at a steady pace, with no pauses.  Speed is not the focus, the aim here is to spit every word clearly.  This is sometimes easy, depending on how you do it.  Here are a few examples of streams from myself and other famous speed rappers:

• “You ready for the world, girl, come and go with me,
  I’ll touch you all over your body, baby don’t say no to me
  And every moment you controlling me, I’m loving the way you be holding me
  while I be listening to Jodeci.”
  (Twista, Slow Jamz)
• “How can I roll into Jacobs and purchase some diamonds with dough on the table?
  How can I floss in the party with Gin and Bacardi when I am not able?
  How can I live in a home with a Butler, 4 bedrooms and windows that gleam?
  And how can I take a trip out to the Florida Quays when I ain’t got the green?”

• “You can tell me that I don’t be flowin and kickin it tight on the beat.
  They can hate on my rhymes till they die because I be the cause of defeat,
  Because everytime somebody wanna compete with me, strugglin mumblin lyrics pathetically,

Streams are hard for beginners generally because most people aren’t used to talking at such a steady rate for such a long period of time.  However, the opposite is true for more experienced speed rappers– it gets easy after a while, with lots of practice.

Bursts, on the other hand, are phrases that are usually short, and delivered rapidly one after the other, although as standalone items they’re very easy to say.  Go ahead and try to spit the following combos as fast as you can.  They roll right off the tongue:

• “Hit-em-up.”
• “Droppin-it-off.”
• “Trippin-you-up.”
• “Finna-react.”
• “Killin-it-hard.”

As you can see, these are all 3-4 syllables long.  They can be longer, but this is the ideal length for practice.  Rapping at a slow speed and throwing bursts in occasionally works best in songs with a higher BPM.  You can see examples of this in songs like Twista’s “The Come Thru,” and my own song “Got A Problem.” (I’ll be discussing this song soon!)

Getting  back to my original aim, which was to cry and complain about my throat at the moment.  It’s actually kinda nice just sitting here writing away and letting my throat and jaw muscles slowly recover.  I should do this more often.

Oh yes.  A few updates.

There is a slight possibility that the shooting date for my music video will be pushed back to November.

We just acquired some new camera equipment and need to make sure we know how to use it properly.  This shouldn’t be a problem for myself, since I’ve had some experience acting and whatnot, and definitely not an issue for my director, Joe Comstock, who’s currently a professor of Cinematography at the Academy of Arts.

However, we like to make sure we have our ducks in order before we make any moves, so for now we’re playing it safe.

I’m still working on more music than ever.  Tomorrow, I’ll be finished writing a small… erm… longish verse/remix, which I’ll record if there’s time.
