alphainventions

The ongoing battle regarding Development Charges in Halton Region has been an up and down battle with a lot of input from all sides. With all the different input, it can get confusing on just what happened in the end. For some, especially those who bought homes in Halton, it seems they got good news in regards to not having to pay the increase.

In my last blog, I was wondering just who was going to pay the freight on the development charges. Fortunately, I have received some clarification on just what is happening. The following is from Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, who wants to make sure there is full understanding of the issue. I invite you to visit the link and see the answers yourself.

I appreciate the Mayor taking the time to bring this clarification forward.

- – - – - -

I saw your posting about the Region’s financial plan in which you said you were needing some clarifications, and I hope the below is helpful.

http://www.region.halton.on.ca/Council/video-archive/video-111809.htm

This is the Nov 18 Halton Council meeting.

At 41:40 on the tape, Item 4 (the Financial Plan and the payments you are discussing) from A&F is covered. The debate is clear and easy to follow, I believe. It only takes 21 minutes, but if you care about this issue, it’s about the most important 21 minutes you can spend to learn about the topic. I hope you will view it.

The section runs from 41:40 until 65:30 (approx). At 62:20, a Councillor characterises the payment as a loan to the Region, and at 64:00 I ask the Region’s lawyer to clarify that it is not a loan, which he does clarify, and then at 64:30 Councillor Tom Adams asks really clear questions that establish that there is no interest and no loan and no form of promise to repay by the Region, whereupon the debate ends and Council adopts the Plan.

Induction Cooktop by Max Burton 6000 Series Review

Check Price Now!

I’ve had this unit about a month now and so far I can say that works very well. You can cook either by setting a power level (1-9) or by setting a desired cooking temperature which was a feature I didn’t expect.

The first time I used it, I wasn’t very familiar with the power settings and I managed to burn some butter I was trying to brown in the pan. I usually cook on a gas stove and brown butter at medium heat, so if anything, medium heat on this induction unit is much hotter than what I’m used to. At power level 9 it would probably melt my cookware or char whatever was cooking … on second thought, I’ll probably never use it at that level.

The one reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the difference in power levels is just a little too big for my taste. Power level 1 is a very low simmer in which the unit cycles on and off to achieve a very low power output. The problem is that power level 1 can’t provide a constant low simmer – which would be very useful for cooking things like rice or a stock. Power level 2 is too big of a step up to really be useful for the same kinds of foods. I would have preferred less overall wattage and better heat control.

The temperature cook feature is useful in some circumstances. If you just want to keep something warm while you finish preparing a meal, it’s very useful. Unfortunately, it also suffers from some of the same problems as the power level output mode where there is too much difference between one temperature level and another. You can’t dial in 185 degrees. Instead, you have preset temperatures such as 140, 180, 210, etc. These temperature settings do have a bit of delay when they are set, also. If you are going from 210 to 180, you can expect the unit will stop delivering power altogether until the ceramic surface cools down to the desired temperature. Meanwhile, your cookware and food may have already cooled off more than you might have intended.

Despite what I’ve said, the above problems really are fairly minor and I can work around them. Had this unit been more expensive, I would find the issues to be more serious. I think this unit is a great bargain and the features you do get for this price are well justified.

Induction Cooktop by Max Burton 6000 Series Overview

Induction cooking is extremely fast and is safe even for children since there is no open flame. Because induction cooking works electromagnetically, heat is generated only in the cookware that it comes into contact with. Your food is cooked to perfection and the cook top stays cool. With 9 temperature settings, 10 power levels and a 150-minute timer, it’s at home in a restaurant kitchen as well as your own. Can be used with cast-iron, carbon steel, enamel steel or magnetic stainless-steel cookware. Black with gray accents.

Product Features
• Ceramic cook top with sturdy plastic housing
• Fast and safe cooking with no open flame
• Instant temperature change with the push of a button
• Power levels 1-10 with 9 temperature settings from 150 F to 390 F, including a
• keep-warm setting
• Programmable 150-minute timer with alarm and auto shutoff
• Twice the energy-efficiency of gas cooking
• ETL-approved to UL standard 1026
• Perfect for buffets, catering, outside by the grill or in homes with children.

Great value, cooks well, interface could be better, beeps too loud – Aaron Wolf – Ann Arbor, MI United States
Induction cooking is fantastic, far superior to traditional electric and more efficient and practical than gas. This is the cheapest and best value to get into induction cooking. This is powerful. The other similar portable units are 1200 or 1300 watts usually, and this is 1800. It boils water noticeably faster than our other portable unit. Unfortunately, every push of a button emits a very loud beep, which really isn’t necessary. And when the timer goes off it just beeps once instead of more noticeably (of course it stops cooking as well, so it isn’t a real problem, but just not ideal). The interface is a little less straightforward than our other unit also. But this is the most powerful and the cheapest portable induction unit, and it works great. We’ve had no problems so far.

Great Additional Burner – D. Pralle –
I bought this burner in order to determine if I wanted to go with a full size induction range/cooktop for my kitchen remodel. As expected, I needed to purchase a couple of new pots/pans, but once I tried it out, I was impressed with the speed and efficiency of this cooktop.

It will boil a liter of cold water in less than five minutes and the temperature setting was very handy when using the cooktop for deep frying. Setting the cooktop to 360F yielded a very consistent temperature and didn’t require frequent power changes when adding or removing food from the oil.

Cleanup was also a snap.

The cooktop also has an alarm which tells you if a pot/pan is not induction compatible. The same alarm sounds if you’ve removed a pot/pan from the burner.

Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of this cooktop. I’ve decided to stick with gas for my primary cooking surface, but I think I will use this cooktop frequently as an extra burner when cooking for a group and as a warming tray for parties.

…and you can’t beat the price.

If you enjoy contemporary art, you’re spoiled for choice. A wide range of works are currently on display in museums around the world, and your biggest problem will be finding the time to see them all.

The ROM has Vanity Fair Portraits until January 3, 2010. I’m planning a trip before Christmas.

The AGO is showing Edward Steichen’s fashion photography and the exhibit ends on the same day.

The National Art Gallery in Ottawa is showing the gorgeous urban photographs of Gabor Szilasi [featured above] until January 17.

There are many Tim Burton worshippers out there, and they are likely congregating at the MoMA’s Tim Burton exhibit.

I’m sad to be missing out on this one: London’s National Portrait Gallery is currently showing The 60s Exposed: Beatles to Bowie.

And it gets worse. On the other side of the Thames, the Tate Modern is showing Pop Life with works by Koons, Hirst and Murakimi.

And for those who book their travel plans early, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington is dedicating an exhibition to Elvis Presley. It starts January 8, 2010.

Recently, I have become really attracted to brands that have green product lines. I was searching the Burton site http://www.burton.com/ for a new ski hat for the season, and I noticed they have a Green Mountain Project. According to the website, the Green Mountain Project is “where each decision is considered with an eco-influence. some changes are big, some are small, but all are steps in the right decision.” Burton has boards, bindings, jackets, pants, boots, and even luggage… all designed and made with the environment in mind. They use earth-friendly materials and manufacturing processes whenever possible with all of the products for this line. My fav GMP women’s jacket Burton has right now is the GMP Bliss Down Jacket.

Working at an eco-friendly florist, I have really become aware of eco-friendly efforts put forth by other businesses. I would much rather give business to a company, store, or brand if they make efforts to help the environment. So, after seeing this about Burton, it led me to wonder what other ski and snowboard brands have product lines like this…

Liberty Skis

http://libertyskis.com/

So, Liberty Skis is cool for 3 BIG reasons. 1) they are made right here in Colorado 2) they make their skis from laminated bamboo and 3) the company runs on 100% wind power!

Arbor

http://www.arborcollective.com/

Arbor, like Liberty Skis, uses bamboo for its snowboards’ cores. The bases are made with left over poly-ethylene that would have gone to a landfill to sit for all eternity. Arbor apparel is also made with 100% organic or bamboo blends.

Nau

http://www.nau.com/

Nau is an “urban+outdoor” clothing company based in Portland, Oregon. They make sustainable apparel with sleek designs for the modern mobile life, all the while keeping the environment and ethics in mind. One element of their production levels is they decide to make many of their clothes in Asia because most of their fabrics are from there, and they want to “reduce the environmental risk of shipping” as much as possible. There are way to many cool things to type about this clothing company, so go check them out for yourselves!

I got this list from MrGreen.Biz blog. http://mrgreenbiz.wordpress.com/2009/01/14/eco-friendly-ski-and-snowboard-gear/. These are other ski and snowboard companies that are taking green steps on this posting. It is “an organization dedicated to the truth about our environment.” They post really interesting articles about a variety of topics that involve the world’s environment. Check them out too!

So, the next time all of you skiing enthusiasts like myself want to buy some new gear for your season, think twice about who you buy from. We mountain-lovers chose to live in them; let’s do everything we can to protect their beauty and ecosystems. Buying from these types of eco-friendly companies is a step in the right direction.

your fellow mountain-obsessed friend,

MC300-MS7 York-Sunbury Historical Society Collection
Description (page 121)

If you are interested in any of these files then please contact the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick.

“The documents in this series were kept by two brothers, William Henry Street and John Ambrose Sherman Street, who were born in Burton, Sunbury County, the sons of Hon. Samuel Deny Street and Abigail Freeman. They were educated at public schools in Burton and Fredericton.

William Henry Street was born April 11, 1793. After completing his education, he engaged in the mercantile business in Saint John. He was twice mayor of Saint John (1835-1836 and 1848-1849) and served in the militia. In the General Election of 1842, he ran for Saint John City and, after protest, was awarded the seat. He sat until the dissolution of the House in 1846 when he retired from politics. W.H. Street was married twice: in 1824 to Mary Bruce, and in 1847 to Sarah Boyd Orr. He died in Saint John on April 4, 1875.

John Ambrose Sherman Street was born September 22, 1795. He studied in his father’s law office and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar on February 22, 1817. He practiced law at Chatham, Northumberland County, and in 1823 married Jane Isabella Hubbard. He was elected to the Assembly as a Conservative member for Northumberland County at a by-election in 1833. He sat in the House almost continuously until his defeat in 1856. He then moved to Fredericton and unsuccessfully ran for York County in 1861 and 1865. He was made a member of the Executive Council in 1851, and served as Attorney-General until 1854. He died in 1865.

The Street Records pertain to the legal and business affairs of the brothers. The material is catalogued alphabetically according to client’s name. The types of documents found here include: indentures, deeds, declarations, bonds, assignments, correspondence, and leases. The material dates from 1812 to 1863. This series measures 9 centimeters.”

“I’m sure I’ll take you with pleasure!” the Queen said. “Two pence a week, and jam every other day.”
Alice couldn’t help laughing, as she said, “I don’t want you to hire ME – and I don’t care for jam.”
“It’s very good jam,” said the Queen.

“Well, I don’t want any TO-DAY, at any rate.”
“You couldn’t have it if you DID want it,” the Queen said. “The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day.”
“It MUST come sometimes to “jam to-day,” Alice objected.
“No, it can’t,” said the Queen. “It’s jam every OTHER day: to-day isn’t any OTHER day, you know.”
“I don’t understand you,” said Alice. “It’s dreadfully confusing!”

The following chunks of factoids on Alice, chess, and conspiracy theories all come courtesy of that there ol’ wiki: let it take you for a spin today!
Most main characters met in the story are represented by a chess piece, with Alice herself being a pawn. However, the moves described in the ‘chess problem’ cannot be carried out legally due to a move where white does not move out of check (a list of moves is included – note that a young child might make this error due to inexperience).

Although the chess problem is generally regarded as a nonsense composition because of the story’s ‘faulty link with chess’, the French researchers Christophe LeRoy and Sylvain Ravot have argued that it actually contains a ‘hidden code’ by Carroll to the reader.

Sometimes we come to the conclusion that we have to take step back and re evaluatwe where we currently are …..
In canging jobs or companies back in July its aken me some time to understand me and where I want to go … Thanks to Mark L for poking me and getting me thinking what I am and again where I want to be.

Some of the reason we all probably loose our way is becoming comfortable where we are and our view on the world become secure. It takes people and circi=umstrances to get us to re evaluate and let us be reborn to our new selves … Have you been here? Mid life crisis possbly! Its positive though .. None of this is negative or a feeling of depression but realisation that a step outside the comfort zone is happening ……. It’s refreshing!

Thats why I was exited when I read on Wired that his art-work is now bundled in a 434 page thick book, displaying over 1000 drawings, doodles, paintings and evocative concept art dating back to Burton’s teen years in Burbank, California.Burton himself describes it as “40 years of notebooks, scraps of paper, napkins, etc.” Author and co-editor Leah Gallo writes that Burton’s intention is “to allow his fans a broad look inside his private pages.”

Check out a selection below. Pretty cool to see where Burton’s Willy Wonka, The Joker and The Mad Hatter come from:

Available in both limited-edition lithograph ($300) and standard hardcover ($70) versions, The Art of Tim Burton can be pre-ordered from Steeles Publishing and will be available at the MoMA bookstore in New York and Forbidden Planet in England.
