More short crappy reviews! True Tears, Night Wizard, Bus Gamer, Kaiji and Monochrome Factor after the cut!

True Tears: Standard plot line, but very nicely done – 3.5/5

PLOT: True Tears has a pretty standard plotline, but the execution was nicely done. The love triangle ended up being the entire drive of the story rather than just a plot device and as such the drama felt that much more real. It’s a slow burner, building the characters up slowly and giving lots to development avoiding any feeling of shallowness. The characters themselves are fairly likeable, but I personally do not see why Shinichiro had 3 cute girls lusting after him! Oh well this is anime! The drama took a while to develop, but it was nicely done and the series ended nicely. My favourite character was definitely Noe – she’s very quirky & appealing. Hiromi on the other hand bugged the life out of me and I just couldn’t see her appeal. The side characters also got adequate development and Shinichiro’s parents had an actual role to play rather than just being soulless cardboard cutouts. I did feel that there was still something lacking, although I just can’t put my finger on what – maybe its because I just didn’t really like Shinichiro and began to feel that he didn’t really deserve to have so many women lusting after him!

ANIMATION: I have to say that this series is beautifully animated. The character designs are appealing and the backgrounds wonderfully detailed. PA Works have done an excellent job on this series for a relatively recent studio. The festival scene near the end of the series is nothing short of stunning and the wintry backdrop of most of the series was really atmospheric.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The OP & ED were cute, nothing overly spectacular but decent. Same with the voice acting, no one really stands out too much though.

Overall I liked True Tears, but felt that there was something lacking. It’s a slow paced romance, but the wonderful animation and well thought out characters make it a superior example of its genre.

Night Wizard:The Animation: Pretty average action series, but entertaining nonetheless - 3/5

PLOT: I watched this weekly when it aired, and it managed to do its job, in that it provided me with a decent slice of wizarding action every week. Night Wizard is a game conversion so there is plenty of action. At first it’s more like a comedy adventure series, with the main focus being collecting jewels and battling the villain of the week. In the latter episodes the focus shifts to the bigger picture and most of the comedy is lost, as the plot turns serious. I found this threw me quite a bit, as earlier episodes were very light and comedic. However I didn’t expect much from the show to begin with so I was quite pleased with there being an actual plot! Overall an entertaining show that does not demand too much from the viewer, so worth a look if you want some mindless action.

ANIMATION: Its not going to win awards, but it was pretty enough and quite consistent. The action scenes were well done and the character designs were generic, but attractive.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: I really liked the ED and the OP was also OK – BGM was fitting for this type of show as was the voice acting (if kind of bog-standard and uninspiring).

So yeah, a pretty average gamer conversion, but there wasn’t a whole lot wrong with the series. Recommended for light viewing.

Bus Gamer: Interesting premise, but way too short and therefore rushed 3/5

PLOT: Bus Gamer was strange – these 3 episodes feel more like a pilot for a longer series than anything self-contained. I suspect that there will be a Bus Gamer anime at some stage, since the characters are sort of left in limbo at the end of the final episode. It was oddly paced; the first episode was slow and lacked tension and all the action was squished into the last 5-10mins when the trio finally get their act together and get into their 1st ‘Biz Game’! The other 2 episodes sort of repeated that pattern – every time a bit of tension builds Saitou, the comic relief character, quickly defuses it by saying/doing something stupid (his OTT-ness makes me think its an act though – I’m suspicious like that, but nothing is resolved in the end). There is a lack of character development and everything is shallow feeling, but the concept itself is interesting and I would happily watch more!

ANIMATION: I wasn’t very impressed with the production quality of this show – I felt that it could have been better, some scenes just came across as cheap. The character designs just screamed ‘bishie’ at me and I found myself expecting some random shounen-ai to develop (it doesn’t – think its just my warped mind ). The thing that really annoyed me though, was that Nakajou’s eyes were permanently hidden by his hair = bloody irritating.
MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: The music is decent enough – nothing spectacular. The voice acting is good, I liked all the main characters and the opening titles are sung by the 3 (not the best song in the world though).

Overall I feel that an interesting premise was somewhat wasted and hope that there will be longer series in the future as this show does have promise.

Kaiji: Tense, atmospheric show with very striking animation – 4/5

PLOT: Fairly straightforward plot, I was worried initially that they couldn’t milk enough episodes out of the concept, but I need not have worried. Kaiji is a show full of tension and twists – its all very entertaining! I don’t much like the actual characters themselves as it’s hard to sympathise with them as people, but it’s interesting to watch them struggle to outwit each other. The constant narration does occasionally get on my nerves though as its sometimes a touch too OTT, but that’s a minor quibble. By the end I still didn’t much like Kaiji as a person – he’s a bit of a hopeless case, but does demonstrate a bit of backbone and a touch of intelligence – the man needs to stop gambling though, he’s really crap at it!

ANIMATION: In a word the animation is UGLY! Nothing will get me to change my mind on this – the character designs are just plain ugly! However the actual animation quality is extremely high. The detailing of the backgrounds and excellent use of bright colours and heavy shadowing just oozes style. A very well put together show as one would expect from Madhouse. If only the characters were not so ugly, I’d be so much more enraptured of this anime – but not every show can be stuffed full of bishounen! (unfortunately!) What can I say – I’m shallow like that!

VOICE ACTING & MUSIC: Voice acting is very solid, you can tell that Kaiji’s VA is mainly a live action actor as he really does emote every well. The narrator is great (well he is Zaraki Kenpachi himself!), and the supporting cast does a great job too. Music wise the score is brilliant – really enhancing the tension in the right places. The OP is really short and I’m convinced I’ve heard it before somewhere – the ED does the job but is mostly unremarkable.

Overall I’m enjoyed Kaiji quite alot and highly recommend it, however felt that it was a touch OTT at times and perhaps slightly overlong. Although saying that I’m still really looking forward to the live action version!

Monochrome Factor: Shallow and predictable, yet somehow extremely entertaining! – 3.5/5

PLOT: Well its very generic, straightforward and blatantly pandering to BL fangirls, but somehow still manages to be interesting! I was pleasantly surprised by the series as I had zero expectations from it when I was previewing it. The series is from the same team as Loveless, but where Loveless is heavy on the drama, Monochrome Factor is much more comedic. The characters are fantastic fun (if completely stereotypical) and the script is very witty. There isn’t much closure at the end of the series and stuff tends to happen with not a lot of explanation – there is also quite a lot of filler material. However Monochrome Factor was great for light viewing, I even picked up the manga because I enjoyed the series so much!

ANIMATION: The bishie character designs are nice – I like them, but I dont like the whole pink lipstick thing Shirogane has going on. I think the fact he has a 5ft braid and dresses Traptastically is enough to indicate the gayness of the character. The series clearly has a low budget, but it does use it well – things are simple but pretty. Excellent use of chibi’s to enhance the comedy too.

MUSIC & VOICE ACTING: Great voice cast – love each and every one of them though Shirogane is a favourite ^_^ The OP is brilliant (have it downloaded) and the ED and BGM are decent enough too.

Overall a very enjoyable show, surprisingly one of my favourites from the Spring 2008 season!

As ever, more when I have time!

“The last two weeks I’ve written a beginners guide to Asian cinema, I originally planned

“The last two weeks I’ve written a beginners guide to Asian cinema, I originally planned to include this but thought it would perhaps suit it’s own standalone place. More next week though!”

Hayao Miyazaki and chums over at Studio Ghibli have shown the world that Japanese animation can be ultra stylish and stories don’t have to involve underage hareems and panty shots. However Studio Ghibli to your every day anime is more like comparing Walt Disney Pictures to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Movies are a different world compared to their TV counterparts.

The problem with anime is that it has a bad image. There is a sea of almost perverted stories or tales of a boy so strong he fights with other… strong people or equally ridiculous ordeals. However these are stories from another culture, a whole other style of life, style of thinking and most of all a whole other style ir story telling, it just takes a little thought to find something that wont make you vomit.

Culture is the wire that trips people up. It’s often hard to grasp the point of something when you don’t understand where they are coming from. That is where I come in, I’m going to lay down some examples that will hopefully change your opinion on anime.

Name: Welcome to the NHK
Licensed: Funimation
Year: 2006

Tatsuhiro Sato is a college drop-out and spends his time alone in his flat. Scared of the outside world and scared of the disappointment he has caused he has become a recluse. Misaki Nakahara is an outgoing young girl who claims to be able to cure Tasuhiro on a day by day basis, arranging meetings outside of his flat. Kaoru Yamazaki is an old high school friend who has become obsessed with anime and anime culture.

Welcome to the NHK is more of your standard series. It does incorporate many of the typical anime conventions, however what makes it stand out as a good series is it makes fun of that culture. It isn’t about bizarre goings on or verging underage girls, but in fact uses that as it’s base of comedy.

Name: BUS Gamer
Licensed: N/A
Vintage: 2008

This really short series takes it’s leave from any conventions, and basically establishes itself as a really good animation. What works most in it’s favour is that it isn’t aimed at children, so the thrills and frills you would see in the 9 billion other series are absent and what we are left with is a 3 piece, raw, action series.

The plot revolves around an Urban game, where basically people are randomly selected to pit them selves against other ‘groups’ for a substantial amount of money. Yes this includes fighting, but you wont find any hand generated power blasts or giant swords only normal people with lead pipes or the occasional kung-fu.

I can’t really say much else on the subject but I’ve already summed up what I like so much. So seek it out!

Name: Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, Goodbye Mr. Despair
Licensed: N/A
Vintage: 2007

Unlike BUS Gamer, Sayonara… is aimed at a younger audience, youngER not young, so don’t be put off. Much in the same vein as Welcome to the NHK the series doesn’t take itself seriously and in fact exists to mock anime culture and unlike NHK pop culture in general.

The main character is over dramatic and self loathing, but this is where most of the mockery comes from. Pretty much once an episode he breaks out into a mini break down exclaiming “I AM IN DISTRESS” or something of the sort, mocking the over-exaggerated emotions present in practically every anime series.

One of the best and funniest reoccuring elements of Sayonara… is the appearance of random snippets of the writers thoughts on certain goings on in modern Japan, most apparent on the blackboard in all classroom scenes. The writer also slots in his own thoughts of bemusement on his series and how he “finally” has it anime-ised.

It’s really hard to explain why this is a good series and not your typical school girl or school boy anime, it’s a watch it an see affair mostly. And if you don’t get it’s humour or it’s type of parody then it will probably fall into oblivion as a waste of your eyes, but your too intelligent for that aren’t you! Aren’t You!?

Other Series of Note

Death Note – Half of this series is golden. On the surface it’s another school boy series involving ‘Death God’s’ most popularly seen in Bleach. However after the first episode or two it comes to light that the series is better fitted in a Film Noir genre, or detective story. Which is great. However about half way through the series there is a major twist, which ruins it and we are introduced to new characters.

HOWEVER! I have a feeling that the production team know this is a letdown, and not long ago released a 3hr TV special, which documents up until that point. In true Neon Genesis fashion.

Samurai Champloo & Cowboy Beebop – I put the two together on the simple basis that they are from the same production company and have similar style. The stories are fairly standard, Samurai is basically a group of conflicting characters following a quest, and Cowboy Beebop a group of bounty hunters doing their job. What makes them stand out however is their mix of settings. Samurai Champloo is set in Edo Japan but put to a hip-hop soundtrack, and Cowboy Beebop in space set to blues (in true Blade Runner style).

Ergo Proxy – A much more darker series involving humanoid robots, deadly virus and a post apocalyptic world. Little to no comedy breaks the tension or story. Well worth a watch.

I sometimes wonder whether the people who will stumble across this article would be anime fans, and therefor need no guiding, but whether or not I believe I have outlined some very interesting series for you set your viewing muscles upon. Enjoy.

OBS! Spoilervarning DESU

S.A. ~SPECIAL A~ pågående

Oh man, kan någon bara slakta Hikari? ONEGAI?!

NABARI NO OU pågående

YOU GO GRRL!

ZETTAI KARESHI

Night smälter ihop och “dör”. Riiko drar till Paris med Soushi. TRUE END..?

NIJUU MENSOU NO MUSUME pågående

Aya Hirano är dessutom gudinnan bland alla unga röstskådespelerskor and you know it.

BUS GAMER

Dom jag ignorerade:

Itzura na Kiss, Chi’s Sweet Home, Allison to Lillia, To Love-Ru, Tower of Bleh ~the Aegis of URK~, Kanokon, Amatsuki, Blassreiter, Zettai Karen Children, Monochrome Factor, Kamen no Maid Guy, Crystal Blaze, Wagaya no Oinari-sama, D.C. II, Candy Boy, Neo Angelique Abyss, Golgo 13 lol

Sorry for the amazingly late post, I just got lazy with this series because ever since I saw the first episode I knew they weren’t going to be able to end it well, which is exactly what happened. So, the story doesn’t pick up much at all from the last episode and instead we have the trio No Name team entering another competition round, which is to take place on the roof of a building. At first, I thought the opponent’s team was really clever because the roof was a crowded place filled with people eating or drinking (basically a restaurant). I thought the opponent was going to make a discreet attack without anyone knowing what was going on, but instead they made themselves the center of attention by trying to stab there enemies and win. Of course the No Name team won. The investigator from the last episode was actually one the roof during the whole event and we learnt that after she found the gun Kazuo had the team’s master plan to get themselves out of the mess was to run like hell (which succeeded in working considering she didn’t bother to run after them) and to top it all off she was too drunk to notice anything actually happened. She ends up getting fired from her job and moved to a different sector in the police offices. Then some more pointless things happen and it ends in hopes that it was a close enough ending to a series.

From what I understood, the game they played in this episode was the last one before they win the money, but the ending seemed to have meant otherwise, so I’m pretty confused and it would help if I had clarifying. The ending itself was really bad and didn’t solve anything at all; we still don’t understand anyone’s reason to why they wanted the money. Basically, everything that happened throughout the whole mini series was pointless making this a pointless series. It was actually an entertaining episode and it would have been great if it were from a series with a normal expected length. Though, even if it was entertaining, it was nothing more and instead get you interested and then ends, it’s almost like some sort of tragic story only not at all. At least I somewhat enjoyed myself.

Final Impression

This is completely just failed potential. I mentioned that before, but it had a strong story that could have been interesting yet instead they made it condensed into just a mere three episodes. I don’t even understand why they would spend money to make this because it was based on a manga that was never finished after only one volume. What compelled someone into thinking they can make a successful series out of this. It’s just disappointing to watch. Over three episodes I was impressed by the character development though because they did change since the first episode and did become somewhat nicer to each other. I also loved the opening for the series, which was a great song to use. Personally, I think that if the creators weren’t going to just have finished the story themselves, they shouldn’t have made it to begin with because it had its positives ad was ery entertaining, but instead of leaving you with good thoughts it leaves you knowing there’ll be nothing more than what we saw even if we want otherwise.
