1. Who gets the offensive game ball?

The Outsider: Cory Jones and Braeden George each had three touchdown receptions. Both had long TDs catches as well. Jeff Hassler had over 100 yards rushing on only nine carries. The offensive line gave the quarterbacks time to throw and opened up huge holes for the running backs. So, there are a lot of choices here. I am going to go with Laurence Nixon who threw five touchdown passes and only one interception. He was 19 for 28 and 284 yards in the air in about three quarters of action. Nixon managed the game and the Huskies moved the ball at will. He had one of his best performances of the season and won his first playoff game as a starter.

BleedingGreen2009: With 9 carries for 113 yards, RB Jeff Hassler gets my game ball for the second week in a row. Add these same totals over another half of football and he would’ve been on pace for the exact same amount of yards (226) as the week before. In the Star Phoenix on Saturday he was quoted as saying “I don’t know quite what to expect yet, but I’m looking forward to it and hopefully I can still perform.” Hassler did not look at all like a player in his first playoff action. His two huge runs at the beginning of the game set the tone for anothjer dominant offensive performance. It got the crowd into it and spurred the team on to another blowout

Dallas: Slotback Braeden George gets my game ball. He had a breakout game with 140 yards receiving and three touchdowns. His catch just inside the endzone at the end of the third quarter was one of the best I’ve seen. He had two defenders on top of him, and yet he went up and made the catch, coming down just inside the endzone. Credit to Laurence Nixon for putting that ball where only George could catch it.

2. Who gets the defensive game ball?

The Outsider: Again, there are a lot of choices here. David Rybinski and Joel Seutter on the defensive line dominated the Rams O-Line. Peter Thiel and Nicco Higgs led the team in tackles. Mitch Friesen and Cody Halseth had great coverage in the defensive backfield. I am going to go with Joel Seutter for my defensive game ball. He was in the Rams backfield all day and made some good run stuffs. He played very physical and tenacious. There were a number of plays where he hit the Rams O-lineman so hard that they ended up on the ground. A pleasure to watch.

BleedingGreen2009: LB Nico Higgs. The Rams running backs were held to just 68 yards rushing and Higgs was a huge reason why. He picked up a team leading 8 tackles, limiting Inglis and Mosiondz to very little yardage, particularly on the first few Rams offensive possessions when they could get absolutely nothing going.

Dallas: My pick is linebacker Peter Thiel, who had an outstanding game. He made many key tackles at the line and was in the Rams’ backfield often, finishing with 1.5 tackles for a loss. He’s as dominant a middle linebacker as there is in Canada West, and he has taken his game to another level now that the playoffs are here.

3. Who gets the special teams game ball?

The Outsider: Shayne Dueck was on the punt cover and return teams and had two great blocks that set up good returns from Luke Thiel and Travis Gorski. But I am going with Tony Michalchuk for being the wedge buster on kick-off cover. On one play, he busted the wedge and made the tackle limiting the Rams return to only a few yards. That’s tough to do.

BleedingGreen2009: No player to me outshone any other, as everyone on special teams seemed to have very solid games, so I’m going to give it to the punt and kick returning trio of Travis Gorski, Luke Thiel and Jeff Hassler. Gorski had a 36 yard return, Thiel a 27 yarder and Hassler a 48 yarder to put the offense in great position on those drives, making great use of the space they had to work with.

Dallas: Shayne Dueck had a couple nice takcles on punt cover and gets the game ball from me. He had one tackle late in the second quarter where he stopped returner Chris King dead in his tracks and put a big hit on him. I have to mention Grant Shaw, though, as he was on the field for about five straight minutes of game time in the third that included his interception, which followed with his convert, kickoff, and playing corner on the next series. It was an impressive athletic display.

4. What surprised you the most?

The Outsider: There were two things that surprised me. First, that the Huskies put 33 points on the board before the Rams could answer. The Huskies scored on five of their first six possessions. I expected the Huskies to win this game, but I thought the game would be closer. The second was that the Rams threw for 470 yards. Watching the game, I had no idea they moved the ball that well. Granted, a lot of this occurred when the game was well in hand for the Huskies and the Huskies didn’t do as many stunts.

BleedingGreen2009: This shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise but I couldn’t believe how much time Nixon was being given to thrown the ball. He had “all day” to get the ball to his receivers as the Offensive line did another great job of limiting pressure.

Dallas: That Andrew Busby was actually dressed and playing. He had a good game against the Huskies in September, but was nowhere to be found on Saturday. Especially after seeing him play for the Hilltops for so many years, I expected to catch a few passes.

5. What was the play of the game?

The Outsider: Braeden George had a beautiful TD catch from Laurence Nixon near the end of the third quarter. The Huskies had the ball on the Rams five yard line. George, lined up in the right slot, ran an out about 1 yard in the endzone. Nixon placed the ball in a perfect spot and George made the catch between two defenders.

BleedingGreen2009: The game result was out of the question by this point, but Braeden George’s 79 yard touchdown pass from Trevor Barss was fun to watch. It was a beautifully thrown ball that caught George in stride and by the time he had it in his grasp there was no catching him, scoring his third touchdown of the game.

Dallas: Grant Shaw’s pick six. I don’t think there are many plays quite as satisfying as seeing a defensive back from you team head to the end zone with nobody in front of him.

6. What was the turning point of the game?

The Outsider: Grant Shaw’s 69 yard interception return for a touchdown. The Huskies were up 19-0 at the time and the Rams had the ball on a third down and three play. Rams QB Mark Mueller threw a short pass to the right sidelines and Shaw stepped in front of the receiver for the pick six. If the Rams had scored on that drive, the game was probably going to be much closer. Instead, the Huskies took a 26-0 lead and never looked back.

BleedingGreen2009: Corey Jones 67 yard touchdown to put the Huskies up 19-0. Jones took a 15 yard pass from Nixon and after one missed tackle used his speed to take it to the endzone. It was at this point in time that there was a feeling that this was going to be a long afternoon for the Rams, and that the Huskies, playing focused, disciplined and in sync,were on cruise control.

Dallas: I have to agree with the Outsider on Shaw’s interception touchdown. The touchdown took the game from being a hot start by the Huskies to a completely dominant performance. It deflated the Rams, especially since it happened right in front of their bench. The Huskies rode the momentum right through the game and even though the Rams put up a fight, each of their punches was answered, and then some.

7. Who was the unsung hero?

The Outsider: Cody Halseth. That’s a name we don’t hear a lot, but he is a good player who had a great game yesterday. Halseth came into the game when Bryce McCall was injured. He had two interceptions and 3.5 tackles in about a quarter and a half of action. He prevented a touchdown with one of his picks. He looks to have a strong future with the Huskies.

BleedingGreen2009: I have to go with Cody Halseth as well. I groaned when I saw Bryce McCall go down, pretty well ignoring the fact that they had a pretty good replacement doing a fine job, picking up two interceptions, one of which snuffed out a drive along with a handful of tackles and a fumble recovery.

Dallas: Travis Gorski, who mad a few nice blocks and was out in front of a few plays to clear the way for Hassler and Jones on their long runs.

There’s a proverbial “ancient Chinese curse” whose age and place of origin I cannot verify. It’s a wish that one live in interesting times. These are they.

Leaving my job and relationship was difficult, and certainly not having an income is scary as hell. That’s not to oddest part, though. What’s truly interesting is my own lack of… well, direction. Obviously, I’m sending out resumes and filling out applications. I’m also working to develop the contacts I would need to start my own web design and development business. I’m also brushing up on a lot of the technical skills that I’ve let atrophy a bit while working in a retail environment.

I even attended the Michigan Works Job Fair yesterday at Lansing Center. I had to scramble a bit because I’ve worn business casual or just plain casual for most of the last eight years, and as incredible as it must seem, I’ve put on a pound or two since I last purchased business attire. I got my hair cut, took out my earrings, got—in the lexicon of my youth—purty, and headed to town. I did make a few wonderful contacts, and I’m genuinely excited about the prospects of a couple.

That said, there was an awful lot of recruitment for positions for which I simply have too many teeth. If you’re a meth head and are reading my blog, when you’re going for a job interview, you should really consider soap. Your Sunday jeans might also be a good idea. And if at all possible, delouse. Oh, and stop reading my blog. Ew.

What’s blowing me away, though, is how much time there is in a day. What on earth are you supposed to do with it all? I mean… I’m using it to try to find a job, of course, but after all of the running around and spending hours on Monster and Career Builder and Dice and Thingamajob and every business’ website who, when I visited them in person, said, “you should visit our website,” I’m left to walk the dogs, fix myself some lunch, and figure out which other thousand sites to visit that afternoon. Seriously.

Fortunately, I really am in good spirits. It’s been sunny, and there’s been considerable promise—at least from retail businesses—in terms of looking for Christmas help in the next few weeks. I’m also amazed at the number of jobs for which I actually am qualified. I haven’t gotten any callbacks, yet, but I’m hopeful.

Knitting? Now that’s another story. I’ve not knit a stitch in weeks. I have had several ideas, though, so once I am again gainfully employed, I’ll be very happy to get my fingers dirty with a little design work. In the meantime, the pups are good, Rob and I are figuring out how we intend to cohabit, and I’m actually feeling very purposeful. Interesting, no?

I rolled out of bed at 9:38am.  On a Saturday morning, I got out of bed at twenty-to-ten.  You don’t have to get how nice that was, but I do, and it was glorious.  Busby was still snoring in his crate at the head of my bed, and Tate was curled into his accustomed little fox roll at my knees.  I rolled over, powered up the Blackberry, and scrolled through several good tidings after last night’s posts.  Thank you to everyone.  I sincerely appreciate your concern and fond wishes.

As for today, though, I’ve just watched the morning fog lift off the river.  I’ve had my shower and powered up the laptop to wish the world a good morning.  I’ll be heading downstairs to mow the lawn shortly, but I don’t hear much activity up the block so I’m hesitant to rev up the mower.  For now, I’m enjoying the view over the river and Riverwalk and into the park across the way… the view that sold me on this house to begin with.  It’s been my little corner of pastoral life in the middle of central Lansing.  There’s a blue heron wading in the shallows, and I hear the ducks bickering from time to time.  The trees across the water are just starting to show the first signs of changing leaves, and I likely won’t be here to see them in their full autumnal finery.  I have, however, gotten a lead on a potential replacement.

I’m heading downstairs to let the dogs out, put on coffee, and start breakfast.  As I mentioned last night, I’ve got my heart set on a nice, fat omelet and crisp, buttery toast.

There’s a kayaker on the river, now.  Good day for it.  Better days are coming.

It’s true that I’m no longer affiliated with ThreadBear Fiber Arts Studio. There is loss involved. I suspect that it will take a while to work through that loss, but I’m well, the dogs are well, and we’re all moving on.

Beyond that, I’m in the first hour of my first real Saturday off in what seems like forever. I just got back in from a little light grocery shopping, and I’ve got onions, mushrooms, and ham for an omelet and a nice whole wheat bread for toast. I plan on mowing the lawn, cleaning house a bit, folding some laundry, and maybe even getting a little knitting done. I also have several videos that are due tomorrow that I’ve yet to watch, and I expect I’ll run those while I’m folding and knitting.

Sound boring? Then you’ve obviously never worked years on end of six day workweeks that always… always included both Saturday and Sunday. It’s amazing what you can look forward to when you’ve lived without it for a while.

So, I’ve acquired a little bit of my life back. I’m also unemployed with two dogs to feed, and sometime soon, I get to move. It’s not an ideal situation, but I am excited. I’ve always been a fan of change, and this change, while bittersweet, is for the best.

For quite some time now I’ve chatted with some of the local residents with regards to forming a “Men’s Shed” program. I’ve looked at this as an observer and have recently made enquiries with the Bonnyrigg men’s shed –previous participant.  These “Sheds” seem to me to be a terrific venue for fella’s to get together, work on projects and get some “man time”. From my understanding they can often be a venue for men getting valuable health information and interaction with other blokes who find they have a little time on their hands.

Do you know of someone who might be interested in becoming part of this vital group of local men?

Do you have an expertise or skill you could share?

Do you know of an older disused building that could be converted into a “shed” (cheap even better free)

Are you interested in forming a steering committee to get one up and running in Liverpool?

For me, this is an important addition to the lives of gentlemen all over our LGA, I am happy to be part of getting one going, I’d be happy to contribute of my time to keep one running and to investigate the commencement of such a project. But I cannot do it alone.

Please send me your ideas, and suggestions for gentlemen who could help me get this project off the ground. Or if in fact you think the whole idea is a waste of time…let me know…surely there are some fella’s out there who would find knocking together pieces of furniture etc, perhaps a little gardening or whatever, even if it is just to give them a break from the missus for a few hours each week.

I wish we had one around when my dad was alive, perhaps having an interest might have just kept him around a little longer…

Today marks the one hundredth birthday of Sir Matt Busby. Born on the 26th of May 1909 in the Scottish village of Orbiston, Lanarkshire, Sir Matt would one day become one of English football’s finest-ever managers.

When he signed on as manager for United in 1945, he took a post previously left vacant by Scott Duncan in 1937. With Sir Matt at the helm, United went on to win the FA Cup three seasons later, his first trophy of many. After forming a squad strong enough to mount a challenge for the Football League Championship and finishing runners-up four times, he finally brought it to Old Trafford in 1952. 

Together with his assistant manager Jimmy Murphy, he restructured the club’s scouting and youth system that soon yielded results in the form of Bill Foulkes, David Pegg, Duncan Edwards, Jackie Blanchflower, and Liam Whelan. Sir Matt gradually replaced the older heads with the youngsters and the Busby Babes, as they were soon dubbed, went on to win more accolades, namely the Championship back-to-back in 1956 and 1957.

In the following season, as United lay siege on all fronts (the Football League title, FA Cup and European Cup), tragedy struck. On the 6th of February 1958, after an European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, their plane crashed on the Munich runway after a scheduled refuelling stop. The disaster left 23 people dead, including eight players and three club officials. Sir Matt himself was brought to hospital and twice received last rites, but he returned to Manchester just two months later.

He sought to rebuild the team he had lost, bringing in signings like Denis Law, Pat Crerand, and Albert Quixall. These players, coupled with the likes of Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes and Harry Gregg who had survived the Munich disaster went on to lift the FA Cup once more in 1963.

Under his guidance, United won the League in 1965 and 1967. From strength to strength, they became the first English team in history to lift the European Cup when they bested Benfica in extra time. He retired in 1969, but remained at United as club director. A year later, Sir Matt inevitably took the wheel again after the sacking of Wilf McGuinness in the December of 1970.

Five years after his death in 1994, United lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time since 1968 on what would’ve been his 90th birthday. Ten years on, we still revel in that moment. And just like the ‘Believe’ mosaics the season before, Reds in Rome are to form up the words ‘For Sir Matt’ to pay tribute to a man who gave everything to United.

FUNDING has been approved to re-open Busby public toilets.
John Bunclark confirmed at a Busby Community Council meeting that in total, £6,000 has been given to help clean up and re-open the Clarkston Toll toilets to the general public.
The matter will be discussed at the next meeting.

BUSBY’S train station is set for a cash boost to provide access for the disabled.
East Renfrewshire Council have been successful in a bid to gain 50 per cent funding for the works application to make the station compliant with wheelchair access.
Councillor Alan Lafferty told Busby Community Council the council require access from above on privately owned ground.
But he added he was optimistic the project will get the green light within the financial year.

BUILDING work will soon be underway on the Isobel Mair School.
The school is to benefit from the East Renfrewshire Council’s funded project.
Developers at Greenlaw have not yet put the services in but the work is set to go ahead in the near future.

CLEANSING options are being looked at to deal with litter in Busby.

In Inghilterra c’è un vecchio detto che recita: «Quello che Manchester fa oggi, il resto del mondo lo fa domani». Una massima spaccona, che risale alle Rivoluzioni industriali, ma che, in verità, non si allontana più di tanto dalla realtà. Perché Manchester – che si pronunci Mànchester o Manchèster poco importa, tanto neanche «gli inglesi sanno parlare la loro lingua», direbbe lo Shaw di Pigmalione – è una delle città più avanzate di tutta la Gran Bretagna. Non a caso, viene da molti considerata come la seconda, vera, città dell’Inghilterra dopo Londra, a differenza della più numerosa, ma sciapa Birmingham e della problematica Liverpool. Quella che attende l’Inter non è solo la fossa dei Diavoli di Sir Alex Ferguson, ovvero il “Teatro dei Sogni” Old Trafford. Che si trova inaspettatamente fuori città, ovvero nel borgo di Trafford, nella Greater Manchester area, una contea metro-periferica e numericamente inibitoria – vi dimorano circa 2,5 milioni di abitanti.

No. Manchester è molto di più. È una città che, nel corso della storia, ha visto, subito ed assorbito di tutto. Impero romano, marxismo, nazismo, Ira, iperindustrializzazione, musica “Mad-chester” sono solo alcuni dei corposi capitoli di un libro che si rinnova costantemente ma che ha un passato quanto mai attuale. Del resto, la stessa fondazione della città ripropone quel sottile, ma mai reciso canale tra Roma ed Albione. Dal 79 d.C., quando Giulio Agricola battezzò Mamucium (letteralmente “collina a forma di mammella”) il castro romano della poi evoluta Manchester, sino a martedì prossimo, quando il livoroso generale lusitano Mourinho tenterà la Reconquista dell’onore calcistico italiano. Tra questi due paletti millenari, Manchester ha imparato ad imporre il suo ritmo economico, culturale e sportivo all’Inghilterra e al mondo.

Dopo la conquista normanna del 1066, Manchester si è costruita la fortuna industriale dei secoli successivi. Dai sarti alla manifattura e susseguentemente al libero e massivo mercato tessile (soprattutto del cotone) il passo è stato breve. L’apertura, nel 1761, del Bridgewater Canal, il primo corso d’acqua artificiale e navigabile della storia inglese, seguito dall’allestimento dei primi stabilimenti tessili fecero di Manchester il maggior centro mondiale del mercato cotoniero, tanto da guadagnarsi l’appellativo di “Cottonopolis”. E con la Rivoluzione industriale Manchester divenne “la più grande città industriale del mondo”.

Un ennesimo nickname che però ai pro di un superlativo ma incontrollato sviluppo industriale vide crescere a dismisura i contro delle mancate riforme sociali. Così le rivolte politiche e della fame dei più poveri non si fecero attendere, sfociando nel sangue come nel massacro di Peterloo dell’agosto 1819. Lo scenario di squallore e miseria delle classi invisibili fece impallidire Charles Dickens quando visitò una fabbrica di Manchester venti anni più tardi. Lì, si dice, ebbe l’ispirazione per la Coketown di Tempi Difficili, con l’obiettivo di dare con la sua opera «il colpo più duro possibile» alla terribile condizione dei miserabili dimenticati da Dio e dalla Regina. E sempre l’industriale ma ingiusta Manchester – «all’epoca paradiso e inferno di estremi indicibili» secondo lo storico Simon Schama – fece ambientare proprio lì ad Engels La situazione della classe operaia in Inghilterra (1844). Vi furono i primi congressi sindacali e, soprattutto, Manchester divenne una roccaforte delle Suffragette e del partito laburista inglese. Non a caso, il congresso nazionale Labour 2008 si svolse proprio nella città del North West England.

Oggi Manchester, dopo le bombe naziste degli anni ‘40, l’attentato dell’Ira nel ’96 – il più violento di sempre sul suolo inglese – e un’economia zoppicante dagli anni 60 sino alla fine degli 80, è una città ancora vivissima, la “capitale del Nord”, dove investire non è un azzardo per gli imprenditori. Ma, allo stesso tempo, è cambiata moltissimo. Parte dei mattoncini “brick” è sopravvissuta, così come i pub stracolmi di pinte di “ale” e irrinunciabili schermi dell’orwelliana SkySport per non perdere neanche un tackle della Premier League. Ma il centro della città si è modernizzato non poco. Molti stabilimenti tessili sono diventati appartamenti, uffici e loft di lusso, mentre altre costruzioni “obsolete” sono state demolite senza tanti complimenti per lasciare spazio ai più splendenti acciaio e vetro che hanno partorito nel 2006 la Beetham Tower, il grattacielo più alto d’Inghilterra al di fuori di Londra, sorto sulla Deansgate – strada che ospita il più grande pub Britsh, il Moon Under Water. In tutto questo, però, sono sopravvissuti non pochi elementi di stile, antico, gotico e vittoriano, come St. Peter’s Square, con accanto la splendida Town Hall, controfigura del più famoso Big Ben, soprattutto per le riprese cinematografiche – vietate a Westminster – o la pantheoniana biblioteca Central Library. Per non parlare poi del centro commerciale/sociale kitsch Afflecks Palace, dove crescono le nuove generazioni, e i supercool quartieri Castlefield, Gay Village e Northern Quarter (dove ci sono le targhe dei vip incastonate nei marciapiedi). Insomma, una contemporanea babele stilistica non inusuale per le città inglesi – con Birmingham forse peggior esempio estetico.

Ma il resto non è silenzio a Manchester. Perché nella multiculturale (e piuttosto insicura) città degli incazzati Oasis, dei paranoici Joy Division, dei liquefatti Smiths, degli anfetaminici Chemical Brothers, e poi del quotidiano Guardian, di Top of the Pops, di Anthony Burgess, della Halle e della Bbc Philarmonic Orchestra, vi è ovviamente il calcio dello United e del City, team fondati rispettivamente nel 1878 e nel 1880. I Citizens hanno sempre vinto poco, con picchi nazionali negli anni 30 e nel Sessantotto. Anche i Red Devils, tuttavia, fino agli anni 50 non furono irresistibili. Ma poi arrivarono due Messia scozzesi che fecero vincere tutto allo United. Primo il grande manager-talent scout Matt Busby, in panchina per 26 anni dal ‘45. E poi il socialista, scorbutico, ma insostituibile Alex Ferguson. Grazie agli sceicchi, oggi il City si sta attrezzando per fomentare contro i cugini un duello poco epico (visto il business in gioco), ma titanico. Eppure, qualche tempo fa, le due squadre, o meglio, le loro tifoserie non erano così “nemiche”.

Infatti, nonostante vi siano comunque tradizionali sfottò – quelli dello United etichettano i cugini come “perdenti”, quelli del City accusano i rossi di non essere di Manchester, bensì di Newton Heath e, fino a qualche tempo fa, di avere l’onta di una dirigenza straniera – prima della Seconda guerra mondiale capitava che le due tifoserie si ritrovassero incredibilmente a tifare per la stessa squadra. Infatti, non vigeva ancora la cultura della trasferta (né c’erano i soldi per farlo) e quindi la squadra che giocava in casa univa le due fazioni di Manchester sotto un unico tifo. Scenari oggi a dir poco improbabili.

«Ma anche dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale le due squadre convissero in qualche modo (dal 1941 al 1949, ndr), in quanto l’Old Trafford era inagibile per i bombardamenti subiti e così sia il City che lo United giocavano al Maine Road» dichiara al Riformista Bernard O’Donoghue, uno dei più importanti poeti irlandesi contemporanei, professore ordinario di Linguistica e Storia della Lingua Inglese presso l’Università di Oxford e trasferitosi a Manchester nel 1961 all’età di sedici anni. «Mia madre» prosegue, «era una grande fan del City, che negli anni ’30 era leggermente superiore ai Red Devils, così sono diventato anch’io tifoso dei Citizens. Ma poi dal febbraio del 1958 tutto è cambiato».

Già, quel 6 febbraio 1958. Quando l’aereo con a bordo i Diavoli Rossi si schiantò all’ aeroporto Munich-Riem di Monaco al terzo tentativo di decollo dalla pista ghiacciata. Nella Superga anglo-tedesca perirono 23 passeggeri, di questi otto giocatori della nidiata di Busby (compresi il capitano Byrne e il fenomeno Edwards) e tre persone dello staff. Anche Sir Bobby Charlton era su quell’aereo, ma la morte gli regalò solo una rapida occhiata, risparmiandolo. «Dopo quella tragedia, in moltissimi, in Gran Bretagna ma anche in Irlanda, hanno cominciato a tifare United – tranne me, ovviamente. Vi fu un sentimento di solidarietà collettiva, quasi religiosa» aggiunge O’Donoghue – che ha dedicato il suo poema Immaturities a questa tragedia.

Da quel giorno sono cambiate tante cose. C’è stato il campione di nome e di fatto George Best, il derby del “traditore” (e Pallone d’Oro) Denis Law nel ‘74, l’unico successo internazionale del City, la Coppa delle Coppe del ’70, poi sprofondato nella serie C inglese e ora in attesa del sospirato Eden made in Dubai.
