A tre settimane dall’inizio della quindicesima Conferenza Onu sul Clima di Copenhagen, gli esperti non forniscono buone notizie.

Le emissioni di gas a effetto serra, infatti, avrebbero toccato livelli mai raggiunti dall’epoca preindustriale e si starebbero avvicinando «agli scenari pessimistici» ipotizzati finora. «Le notizie non sono buone», ha affermato l’Organizzazione meteorologica mondiale. «La concentrazione di gas a effetto serra continua a aumentare con un ritmo molto rapido, bisogna agire rapidamente», afferma il segretario generale dell’Omm, Michel Jarraud, presentando alla stampa gli ultimi dati raccolti dall’agenzia delle Nazioni Unite. Ciò conferma «la tendenza di un aumento esponenziale» di questi gas, dice Jarraud. Ci troviamo davanti «allo scenario pessimistico» descritto dal Gruppo internazionale di esperti sul cambiamento climatico (Giec).

Intanto l’Unione europea e le grandi potenze mondiali si preparano alla conferenza internazionale. Per il segretario esecutivo della Convenzione Onu sul clima, Yvo de Boer, è di cruciale importanza che gli europei continuino a esercitare la loro leadership internazionale alla Conferenza internazionale di Copenhagen, in dicembre, mantenendo la loro offerta di tagliare le emissioni del 30%, in modo da spingere gli altri paesi sviluppati a offrire riduzioni simili.

‘Tis the season for social media. Seventeen percent of U.S. consumers plan to leverage social media sites to assist in their holiday shopping this year. The majority (60 percent) will do so to seek discounts and sales, according to Deloitte’s 24th annual Holiday Survey.

More than half of social media users reported that they will also use these sites to research potential gift ideas (53 percent) and view their friends and family members’ wish lists (52 percent). Forty-six percent will research product reviews and 30 percent plan to share their own wish list. The study, which was conducted online by an independent research company, surveyed more than 10,000 individuals.

Mobile phones are also getting the call. Nineteen percent of consumers plan to use their mobile devices and apps to aid in their purchasing decision. Of this group, 55 percent plan to use their handsets to locate stores, 45 percent will research prices and 40 percent will look up product information. About a third will also seek discounts (32 percent) and research product reviews (31 percent), while 25 percent plan to make purchases with their mobile phones.

This is only the beginning, said Scott Testa, professor of business at Cabrini College. “The ability to do a lot of things around the shopping experience with smartphones is only going to grow and I think those numbers are going to go through the roof,” he said.

The most avid social media and mobile adopters were those aged 18 to 29 years old. However, older generations are also getting on board, as 33 percent of those 30-44 and 12 percent those 45-60 are embracing digital tools during the holidays.

When one decides to consider “Going Green”, or looking at “Sustainable Practices”, it can quickly become very confusing.

There is so much information out there that it can become overwhelming. But relax; there are some scientific frameworks that can help you to achieve your sustainability goals, while at the same time considering your short-term and long-term business or community objectives.

The three frameworks that I will address here are: The Triple Bottom Line, Zero Waste, and The Natural Step.

The Triple Bottom Line is pretty straight forward. In decision making, one must consider the People, the Profits, and the Planet. According to our now mainstream Wikipedia, The Triple Bottom Line is made up of ‘Social, Economic, and Environmental’ capital, or the ‘People, Planet, and Profits’.  The People are referred to as the “Human Capital”.  The Planet is referred to as the “Natural Capital”. And the Profits are referred to as the “Economic Capital”. All must remain in proper balance for long-term sustainability.

Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource use so that all products are reused or recycled. This is an “Upstream Philosophy”. Zero Waste is a philosophy that combines the elements of resource utilization and product or service design with a focus on the entire life cycle of the product or service. The focus throughout is:

• minimizing virgin resource utilization
• maximizing reuse and recycled resources, service or product delivery with minimal environmental impact
• and end-of-life de-construction resulting in materials that can be reused or recycled through composting or inorganic technical closed-loop cycles

Zero Waste requires design forethought upstream, during product planning, so that resource recovery, recycling and composting downstream can occur with minimal or no waste to bury or burn.

The Natural Step is based on 4 Systems Conditions.

System Condition 1:  In a Sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing concentrations of substances extracted from earth’s crust.

System Condition 2: In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing concentrations of substances produced by society.

System Condition 3: In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing degradation by physical means.

System Condition 4; In a sustainable society, people are not subject to conditions that systematically undermine their capacity to meet their needs.

Working with The Natural Step, each organization or community must draw its own conclusions from these basic principles. In the Natural Step Framework, we utilize a four-step “ABCD process” to provide a systematic way of “backcasting from principles” into practice, for sustainability planning and decision-making. The ABCD process really is the glue that holds The Natural Step Framework together. This framework can help us sort through the complexity and data by revealing patterns and relationships, so that we can make sense of all the information and help you to move forward in a strategic fashion.

MILANO – Cade il muro di Foro Buona­parte. Doveva proteggere bus e tram, è stato costruito nell’ulti­ma settimana, di notte, turni straordinari pagati con i soldi pubblici. Ieri, il lavoro era con­cluso: una nuova corsia riserva­ta da Cadorna a Cairoli. Bene, anzi malissimo: «Il cordolo in cemento sarà eliminato, è peri­coloso e crea un imbuto nella circolazione», attacca il vicesin­daco Riccardo De Corato. L’indi­cazione è stata girata ad Atm e ieri l’azienda ha risposto con una lettera: «Aspettiamo comu­nicazioni scritte». Il confronto è solo all’inizio.

De Corato ha bloccato e ora sta rivedendo tut­to il piano dei nuovi percorsi per i mezzi pubblici ereditato dall’ex assessore Edoardo Cro­ci: «È stato costruito su un crite­rio sbagliato, le barriere sposta­no solo le auto da una strada al­l’altra ». Primo effetto: non sarà realizzata la preferenziale in via Solari, annunciata entro l’anno. Tutte le altre, 86,4 chilometri di qui al 2014, sono «congelate». L’opposizione è in rivolta: «È tornato il partito dell’auto».

Nearly 35 years after taxpayers spent $55.7 million building the Pontiac Silverdome and a year after a $20 million sale fell through, city officials have sold the arena once called the most desirable property in Oakland County.

The price: $583,000.

“This was a giveaway,” said David J. Leitch, a broker with an Auburn Hills based realty firm.

By my calculations, that’s about 1% of the actual cost to build the dome.

The winning bidders also got the surrounding 127 acres thrown in for free.

So, how bad is it in Detroit?

Ponte (ciclabile ndr.) chiuso a Roma Nord da oltre 10 mesi, interverrà il Sindaco o usa i ciclisti solo per gli spot mediatici?

BiciRoma denuncia ( di mese in mese) la vergognosa situazione del ponte ciclabile ( unica via percorribile per i ciclisti sulla cilabile verso Castel Giubileo altezza fosso dell’Acqua Traversa) chiuso ormai da oltre 10 mesi e per il quale non si conosce ne la data di riapertura ne tanto meno la data di inizio lavori.

Ottimo modo di dare credibilità all’annunciato piano di mobilità che si annuncia sostenibile solo nel nome, per quanto letto e nei fatti, purtroppo la situazione per la mobilità è assai poco sostenibile e il Sindaco Alemanno dovrebbe vergognarsi e scusarsi con i ciclisti romani per questa situazione invece sembra che si ricordi dei ciclisti solo per farsi gli spot mediatici come per l’inaugurazione del bike sharing e/o per accompagnare i due sventurati cicloturisti olandesi dal Papa.

Ci auguiriamo che il Sindaco Alemanno dia prova di serietà per chi senza violenza e con civiltà come dimostrato ai suoi assesori (Marchi e De Lillo di cui si è apprezzata la presenza) nella fiaccolata di venerdì scorso in ricordo di Eva, la ciclista investita sotto al suo balconcino del Campidoglio, chiede e contribuisce ad una Roma migliore dal punto di vista della mobilità realmente sostenibile ed in cambio da dieci mesi ha solo le chiacchiere come dimostra il ponte ancora chiuso.

I have found that living in Texas I am not allowed to use Lending Tree.com or most other Micro Lending peer to peer lending programs. The only problem is that I am trying to find a good micro-lending service in which I can be a micro lender, however due to area that is not possible. Well,I shall keep trying and keep all of you up-to-date on it all.

Hai freddo? Prendi una caraffa d’acqua, ci urli dentro e la scaldi!
Non funziona proprio cosi’ ma quasi. Nell’acqua gli ultrasuoni provocano la formazione di microscopiche bolle di vuoto che implodono producendo calore.

La cavitazione e’ un fenomeno noto da oltre un secolo ma poco utilizzato. Il New York Times ha dedicato una pagina all’argomento, definendo la cavitazione una risorsa ma sono ancora pochissime le sue applicazioni.

L’italiana Kwant produce una caldaia che sfrutta la cavitazione. Ovviamente e’ ben isolata dal punto di vista acustico, gli ultrasuoni non sono udibili dalle umane orecchie ma, se non ci fosse un isolamento adeguato, alla lunga creerebbero disagi. Il risultato e’ una caldaia che consuma meno di una caldaia a gas e non richiede tubi per le esalazioni perche’ non c’e’ fiamma. Inoltre queste caldaie non richiedono un locale apposito ne’ le misure di sicurezza delle caldaie a combustibile.
Niente fuoco, solo una voce potente.

Well, apparently putting out the article yesterday that labels tort reform as “poison” has people in Michigan, and nationwide actually, riled.  That was my top post yesterday, and has remained my top post today, on a Friday, which is a day known as notoriously hard to capture readers.  I even got international hits from my posts lately.  Hooray, I think.  But maybe the news is out that Michigan is suffering an image problem.  (But, I am not the first one to point that out.)   As you know, I have gone through a series of featuring Michigan personalities, artists, politicians, and I have just started moving through the courts/political systems.  The responses to Michigan’s tort reforms, birthed by the former governor John Engler, who now has self-listed Michigan as a “top business state” (posted about this yesterday Tort Reforms in MI) are vitriolic.

Summary:  Michigan business bedroom fellows mixed with the Republicans with the idea of giving businesses legal breaks to “encourage” businesses to want to come to Michigan to invest in Michigan’s economy, which judging by the forecasted 25%unemployment rate here, was a spectacular failure. Businesses and Republican politicians just took advantage of legal loopholes and still decimated Michigan’s economy.  Now lots of investigations are taking place to determine which businesses dumped unseemly amounts of cash into Republican campaigns in exchange for kickbacks and laws favoring their industries.

Great, apparently all elders, in their back-woods desperation to strike it rich, paid the businesses to come to Michigan, gave them unfair and maybe illegal breaks (like not investigating their campaign funding histories and not enforcing the law, Old White Man’s Club overlooking a few things) and now Michigan’s economy is bleeding uncontrollably and corruption investigations abound.  Wonderful.

The facts speak for themselves as Michigan tops the unemployment rates nationwide.  The medical care has gotten worse in this state as bad doctors aren’t removed by being held responsible in the courts (so now all the bad doctors flock to ole Michigan here where they won’t get caught), and insurance companies don’t have to pay for the care of mentally impaired children.  Makes you proud to be here, doesn’t it?  I had been so excited about Michigan’s prospects when looking at its artists, bu now looking at the politicians, the shit is about to hit the fan.  Spectacular.

Nebraska's jobless rate remained stable at 4.9 percent during October. That is less than half that of the national rate, which continued to climb, reaching 10.2 percent.

Omaha, despite adding 1,346 jobs during the month, saw its unemployment improve slightly to 4.8 percent from 4.9 percent in September. Compared to last year, there are almost 10,000 fewer jobs in the Omaha metropolitan area, which includes Council Bluffs.

There were 483 jobs added statewide, and private education and health services continued to be the only sector to experience job growth, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor.

"Nebraska's economy appears to be starting on the road to recovery," said Catherine Lang, Nebraska labor commissioner. "We continue to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, and the numbers of layoffs and business closures have started to slow down as well."

While the state jobless rate is now the second lowest in country behind North Dakota at 4.2 percent, it remains 1.5 percent higher than last year. In Omaha, it's increased 1.3 percent since 20008.

Iowa saw unemployment rise slightly to 6.7 percent over a revised September rate of 6.6 percent.

“Significant economic obstacles lie ahead for the state, and October offered further evidence the Iowa economy continues to be challenged,” said Elisabeth Buck, director of Iowa Workforce Development.

La norvegese Statkraft, utility pubblica attiva nelle rinnovabili, ha inaugurato oggi, su un fiordo nel sud di Oslo, il primo prototipo di centrale elettrica al mondo che utilizza i processi di osmosi per generare energia mescolando acqua salata e dolce.

L’acqua dolce e quella salata vengono immesse in una camera unica, separate da una membrana artificiale. Le molecole di sale attirano l’acqua dolce attraverso la membrana semipermeabile, aumentando la pressione sull’acqua marina. Questa pressione può essere utilizzata per alimentare le turbine che producono energia. L’unico scarto che deriva dal processo è l’acqua salmastra.

Il primo prototipo al mondo produrrà pochissima energia (4 kilowatt), ma entro il 2015 è previsto il primo impianto commerciale con una capacità di 25 Megawatt, in grado di fornire corrente a 10mila case.

From an earlier post Business Incubation 101 that forms the preamble of my incubation idea. Thanks for all the offers of support – shows me that the idea resonates with many.

1. First bring the academia out of the safety of the cocoons we’ve woven around them. Have them check out what the world looks like. Today’s world. Today’s India.

2. Next, focus towards incubating ‘people’. They should be the real focus. Find real mentors. People that have been in the entrepreneurial world even if they have failed. They are the best teachers. Not professors of colleges. Don’t talk about incubating business. Leave that to the Western world.

3. Next, teach people to fish. No point in teaching fishing in your living room aquarium. At least walk them out to a brook. Pick up all the university incubation centres and physically put them off campus. That’s where the world exists. Not in the time warped government funded institutes.

Entrepreneur-ism is not socialistic. And capitalism doesn’t necessarily mean greedy or mercenary - especially in the context of India’s ethos. Make entrepreneurship an attractive lifestyle and stop being condescending irrespective of the preamble of our constitution. That goes for all those holier-than-thou bankers and VC’s.

Primo: piste ciclabili sui marciapiedi larghi. Secondo: aree pedonali in periferia. Terzo: muri puliti dai graffiti, «definitivamente». Quarto: mostre sull’ambiente in piazza Beccaria. Ecco i primi quattro progetti che il neoassessore all’Ambiente, Paolo Massari, ha già deciso come suoi lasciti personali alla città di Milano, lui che sulla poltrona ci è arrivato un po’ tardi, ma ci è arrivato. Ha neppure un anno e mezzo davanti, prima delle elezioni amministrative, ma anche la grinta di uno che non vuole passare inosservato. E l’elenco delle promesse lo snocciola con sicurezza, al telefono, mentre trasloca i suoi scatoloni dall’u fficio da consigliere a quello da assessore in piazza Beccaria.

«Ho intenzione di favorire il più possibile i mezzi meno inquinanti, compresi quelli elettrici. Venerdì scorso sono andato a Palazzo Marino con il segway (il monopattino elettrico in realtà mai decollato), ma anche le bici devono essere aiutate. Per questo proporrò di disegnare strisce gialle per percorsi ciclabili anche sui marciapiedi larghi, dove c’è lo spazio». E i pedoni? «Se ci saranno le strisce non potranno lamentarsi». Si spera.

Secondo progetto: «Sto studiando, in via sperimentale, tre aree pedonali in periferia, in quei villaggetti che la città negli anni ha inglobato.

L’Italia spinge l’acceleratore per il ritorno al nucleare. L’attesa mappa dei siti, dove verranno realizzate le nuove centrali entro il 2020 (si parla di tre – quattro impianti), sarà pronta entro primavera.

Lo annuncia Claudio Scajola, ministro dello Sviluppo Economico, durante la trasmissione la Telefonata di Canale 5.

In campo per ora, c’è il progetto guidato da una joint venture tra Enel e il colosso francese Edf (Sviluppo Nucleare Italia), per costruire quattro centrali nucleari di terza generazione avanzata, in grado di soddisfare circa il 10% del fabbisogno nazionale. Anche il colosso tedesco E.On sarebbe interessato allo sviluppo del nucleare in Italia, magari in partnership (si è fatto spesso il nome del colosso francese Suez – Gaz de France e dell’utility lombarda A2A), qualora, però, si verificassero le opportune condizioni di stabilità politica.
