The day before Thanksgiving and the skies are sunny and clear.  There is a slight breeze as I take my walk.  And there are butterflies!  They flew with me throughout my walk, teasing me as they flew close making me think that they might land on my shoulder and then flying away to the flowers.

Butterflies have always been alluring to me.  When my children were little we would watch them transform from a fuzzy caterpillar hiding in the milkweed to a cocoon and finally emerging from its shell as a beautiful butterfly…the “flutterby” the children would call it.  Butterflies have been for me a symbol of hope and transformation.  Hope that we too can transform from the fuzzy animal that walks on the ground to the beauty of the insect that flies through the air.  Hope that as we gather our energy in the cocoon stage we can emerge ready to provide glory for others.  Ready to light on a shoulder to bring them luck; ready to fly through the air evoking fascination of those nearby.

And so it has been on my path.   A fuzzy caterpillar burying myself and my fears from others, hiding in the grasses, hoping that no one would step on me another time.  A stage of rest in my cocoon as I moved and began to build the path for a new life.  And today, as I watched the butterflies I realized that I too am beginning to emerge from my cocoon.  I am ready to stretch my wings.  I am trying to trust.  I am wanting to fly on the breeze of life bringing hope and beauty to the lives of others.  I am thankful….

Stage Three comprises of the moving away from disney to work on characterising the artworks themselves. As an obvious choice due to the success of the artist’s work commercially, I have chosen Damien Hirst. Also I’d been working with him before and he is relevant right now due to everyone hating his new paintings.

So I don’t really know how to talk about this work that well, but basically it portrays these characters who we feel sorry for due to Hirst’s disregard for them and also the fact that they have personality compared to the new works. I do however feel sorry for the new works as they’ve been given such a slating, I think they’re quite good myself, and its nice to see achange from Hirst. I also believe that the works are hated so much becuase they’re something we’re not used to, traditional painting. This is so very different from what is around right now. And I believe it is so in a good way. It looks back to Bacon and artists of that era or before with a nostalgic mindset.

This piece of art reflects his throwing aside of his other works. It might be interesting to create characters of the new works instead as they will become heroes to the next generation as supposed to his earlier works being my artistic heroes.

Yes, well, could someone please identify this butterfly? The butterflies at my parents house this year were quite prolific. Especially this variety. I don’t think its a monarch, orange/brown color wasn’t quite as bright and no defining black lines.

The Bead Fetish is one of my favorite spots in Sacramento. There are three rooms of glass and stone beads, charms and anything you need to make something pretty.

I wasn’t sure what I was looking for because I felt so overwhelmed by all the possibilities. Like always, my shopping tray was filled with pieces that could be a potential project, but I couldn’ settle on one idea.

But then, I saw the butterfly charm. It was very similar to the butterfly on a necklace I loved so much but lost, a necklace that was given to me by my great friend Viridiana. I decided I’d try to recreate it, though I could only remember it was very earthy with brown braided string and turquoise beads. They didn’t have the same string, and I really don’t even know what it’s called, but I settled on thin brown leather. I bought some beautiful colorful beads, but changed my mind later and used some green ones I found in my bead box.

I couldn’t figure out how I wanted to do it at first (and silly me didn’t think to buy enough leather so I was a little limited). But I just did something so very simple with knots and few green beads. I do like it, but I might reconstruct it one of these days when I get more leather (or find that other string stuff). Any ideas?

Why are we doing this? Does the butterfly not have enough challenges on Earth without sending it into space?

This reminds me of the poor monkeys who were sent into space by the Russians when I was a young woman. According to Wikipedia, “The Soviet/Russian space program in the Bion program satellites used only rhesus species. The first Soviet monkeys, Abrek and Bion, flew on Bion 6. They were aloft from December 14, 1983 – December 20, 1983.”

Now it is monarch caterpillars. Just look at the poor things. I don’t believe they even know what is happening to them. The experiment appears to promote monarch biology in the classroom and also studies the life cycle of the butterfly in outer space and affect of loss of gravity and weightlessness at the same time.

Butterflies are free. We build habitat for the monarch butterfly and sell milkweed seed (their host plant) so they might live. Happy Tonics is building a floral corridor across the USA so the butterfly will have abundant host and nectar sources along its migration route. We have a Monarch Butterfly Habitat in Shell Lake, Wisconsin. If you go outside surely you will see that they live in a natural world. They fly, but not in outer space.

this is my first piece in Scratchboard.

It could have been a party thrown in her honour. She shimmied in, her slender frame clad in richly coloured silks, drawing the eyes of all. Mariposa knew instinctively how to work the room. She settled amongst the group of people nearest to her as they chatted like old friends. Then, when just the right amount of time had elapsed, not too soon to be rude or too long to overstay her welcome, she politely excused herself to mingle and join another set of friends. This she did throughout the night. She was so witty and engaging; men and women alike fell in love with her. Many offered her a drink but she graciously declined, preferring instead the same glass of honeyed liquid she carried around with her. When asked what it was, she would laugh and called it her nectar.

The moment David lay eyes on her, he was transfixed. Never had he seen such a beautiful creature; he just had to talk to her. However, none of the other partygoers actually knew who she was. All they could say was that she had arrived alone but they were at a loss as to what her name was, each assumed she was a friend of a friend. He decided on the direct approach.

“Hi, I’m David,” he extended his hand to her.

“Pleased to meet you, David. This is a wonderful party, isn’t it? Suzanne is such a great hostess. How do you know her?”

Before long, he was divulging his family history, relating amusing anecdotes, even giving her the low down on his academic history; she knew exactly how to make a person feel interesting, charming, sophisticated and yet … and yet it later dawned on him, it was an entirely one-sided conversation. By the time she had moved on, as indeed she did every time to every one, he realized that he still knew not one thing about her, not even her name.

At the onset of sunrise, Mariposa slipped out. Unseen by anyone, her silken robes transformed into gossamer wings and she flew off to alight on the nearest Buddleia, the Butterfly Bush.
