I am organizing a raffle that is taken place here, on the internet, from March 2d to March 17th. This raffle will help me finance my graduate studies in fine arts (MFA), starting in San Francisco this summer.

How does it work : Visit my website and pick your favorite photographs. Then, go to paypal. You will go to “Make a payment” and select “United-States”. If you want to win ONE photo of your choice, pay 30 $. If you want to win TWO photos of your choice, pay 50 $. You will enter my e-mail address : rachel.bussieres@gmail.com and yours. After your payment, I will automatically received a notice of the amount that you paid and will add you in the raffle of 30 $ or raffle of 50 $.

When does it start: The raffle starts on March 2d and ends on March 17th. The winners will be notified on March 18th. They will choose their prize according to the tickets they bought and will receive the photographs within 2 weeks.

Purchasing framed art to many can even affect the decision they make in purchasing the artwork itself. However art is fairly simple to frame and is relatively inexpensive. Many of the art frames can be purchased to match your decor and/or other artwork adjacent. There are endless amounts of choices when it comes to finding the right frame online or offline.

My personal preference is to purchase my artwork of choice without the frame if given a choice. As beautiful as the painting might be, the artist and myself might have opposing tastes when it comes to framing. If you can find the artwork with a frame you enjoy then that is a bonus. If you are purchasing an unframed work directly from the artist it never hurts to ask if they have a connection to get you a good priced frame. Artists that sell a lot will not purchase frames at a premium price. They usually have a friend or a good business connection that deals with frames, so talk to him or her and see if you can get you a discount. It never hurts to ask.

If you prefer to look for yourself then I’m sure you will agree that there are several professional framers in your area. As with any service or profession some are good and some are not so good. Shop around for the best service, best price, and look for value as you would for any other product or service.

If you know your frames you will not hesitate to purchase an ugly painting as long as the frame is worth the asking price. This is more on the lines of bargain hunting. So for most of us we will not be buying a frame to resell it for a higher value, we are simply purchasing it to enjoy the painting.

Below are just a few tips to help you choose your frame.

Size: Making any sized frame-work with a piece one must ultimately control the proportions with matting. A wide frame requires more matting than a narrow frame.

Style: by looking at your artwork you will see how the coloring, theme and medium will most often direct you toward an appropriate selection of frames. Generally the frame should go with the theme, medium and style of the artwork. If you are still having a hard time with choosing your frame you can also use the decor of your room in which the piece will hang as your guide.

Type: wood frames will look good on almost any piece of art. We use walnut, cherry, oak, ash, basswood, poplar, and pine – all domestic woods – in our frames. Stained wood can be plain, carved, simple or ornate. And, many wood frames are available in lacquer finishes, faux finishes, and gold or sliver leaf. Metal frames, which work well with certain decor, or with modern pieces and posters is often a good choice

Why do people invest in art?
Investing in art can enhance an environment, either at home or work; it could be purchased to mark a special occasion, i.e. A birthday or anniversary. Art is about your personal statement, it is not only the artist’s expression, it is also your own.

Where do I start?
The first step in choosing art for your home is to narrow down styles and techniques you enjoy. Are you interested in more modern work? Or something that is quite traditional? Will the piece have to fit with a certain colour palette? This is something your gallery specialist can help you with. Of course you may not know what you are looking for and leave it to chance!

Where is it going to go?
If you have an idea of where you want to hang or stand the work, be sure to accurately measure the space and piece. Measuring by eye can be a dangerous game, as work usually appears smaller in a gallery setting due to the vast wall space. Also consider the colour palette of your room and the piece of art. There are art collectors that have designed their rooms around a single painting, pulling direct colour matches from painting to wall. The larger and more colourful the piece of art you are investing in the more subtle and mute your room colours may need to be. This highlights the work, making it the focus of the room, but also unclutters the room giving the illusion of more space.

Some art can be dramatically enhanced with the use of a spotlight or picture light, it does not need to be an intense light, just something to add definition and highlight features. To preserve the life of your art collection make sure the work is kept away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. To get the most out of your art investment make sure it is either hung correct, it is usually recommended to use two picture hooks, as it not only adds security, but also remains level over time, compare to art hung from a single point. It is also deemed correct to hang the centre of the frame at eye level, although rules are meant to be broken and if you are going for a particular effect or style to fit with the contours of the room then make your own rules.

Should I buy art as an investment?
Whilst there can be alot of profit gained in buying and selling art, only ever buy a piece if you genuinely love it. Whilst the art market is never a sure thing, at least you will always have a piece of art that you can timelessly enjoy and cherish.

 If you want the new painting to complete the room perfectly, don’t forget to take a look at the colors that are used in the room and also at the furniture.

For example, if you have only little furniture there, go for a painting that will stand out.  If the room is fully furnished, go for a simple design that will create the effect that you need.  A very important aspect is the color of the walls.  You don’t want things to look awkward, so buy a piece of art that matches the place where you want to hang it in.  Before deciding in which room you want to put the painting, be careful at its theme.  See whether it goes in the living room or in the bedroom or even in the hallway.

It is a fact that you will choose something according to your style and taste, but make sure the subject and the colors are suitable for the space you want to fill in with the oil painting.  In order to avoid buying a painting that won’t fit in, measure the space that you have available for it.  Another important aspect is the size of the pieces of art that you already have.  Things will probably look awkward if the dimension of the painting is not appropriate.   The next thing that you have to do is to pay attention to the materials that you like.  According to what you want, you have the chance to decide for canvas art or for those printed on paper paintings.  That depends on the amount of money you want to spend, on your preferences and on the effect you want to get when you hang in the piece of art.  Avoid being influenced by different people because they may not know how your home looks like.

 To sum up, I would say that finding the oil painting that fits your home best could be a really demanding job. I think that if you give priority to these aspects, you will buy a painting that will fit your home perfectly.  Even though the most important thing is that you like the painting, you feel good when others do it too.  The internet is the best option if you want to see more paintings and prices before deciding what to buy.  It would be better if you could buy oil paintings from famous artists instead of buying cheap ones. Remember, the piece of art you decide to buy must both match your style and your house.
