Pixar 2013 Anniversary Awards

Yesterday was a very special day for me at Pixar. We celebrated the 10-year (and 20-year) anniversary of everyone who joined Pixar in 2002 (and 1992). Pixar does this every year, recognizing the passion and commitment of its employees in a special way. We had a lunch, an awards ceremony and a gathering afterwards for friends and family.

We each received a little Pixar 2013 Anniversary Wards photo album as a keepsake. The first page inscription is a quote from the late Steve Jobs: “The talent at this company is unbelievable. It’s the densest group of really brilliant people I’ve ever seen in my life.” I’m am so honored to be part of this great company!

Each of us received a bronze statuette, Buzz Lightyear for 10 years of service and Woody for 20 years of service. This year, there were 68 recipients of the 10 year award, and only one 20 year recipient.

If you listen to your friend’s advice, sometimes you can overcome your fears and anxieties. Just like REX the lovable, worrying dinosaur from Toy Story. Buzz Lightyear gave Rex some good advice on how to roar more effectively and it did wonders for Rex!

Also, you can help your friends! You may remember that in Toy Story 3, Rex helps all the toys escape from the garbage bag by using his tail to cut through it!

The Korean personality. The Korean work ethic. The Korean philosophy. These are topics I would love to be able to share with you accurately. However as my foreign friends and I have discussed multiple times, there is just no simple way to figure out Koreans and how they work. It seems every Korean is on a different level of Westernization, and every Korean is just….different. Much like the people from your hometown – could you describe them all through generalizations? No. People everywhere are all very different from each other, though there are usually cultural differences that link certain groups of people together.
Today I wish to explore the cultural similarities I have found here in Korea because sometimes I am still baffled by the Korean way of life. You may have heard before that Korea has a great work ethic – high school students are at school from 7am until 10pm, much like the men of the household who rarely, if ever, go home before dinner. This is all true. Even during winter and summer vacation, students don’t have a break, they take extra classes and the schools stay open all year with class and an open cafeteria. Teachers I work with stay in school (especially now, since school has just started) until 10pm, then many still have an hour commute back home and all they have time for is to sleep and then come to school again. I have heard this sob story from many of my fellow co-workers and I don’t really understand it – where are their children? When do they hang out with their friends? In my experience, a Korean’s social life is full of good friends, but a “good” friend might hang out with you once every couple of months because you’re both too busy with work. Work is the driving force behind everything here and I am astonished at the amount of time people spend in the office.
HOWEVER. I have also noticed that “time at the office” or “staying at school until 10pm” does NOT mean studying hard until 10 or actually working the entire time one is at work. Teachers take naps, students play guitar in their classroom, I’m sure businessmen are busy…most of the time.
My teacher friends do have many things to do…however, they also talk. A lot. People take naps at their desk during break. There’s even a room completely designed for sick teachers to take naps and rest during their break time. This room is in the most literal sense an actual BEDroom. A room designed just to hold a bed. In school.
I have found that it is most important in Korean culture to be at work and put in the hours than to actually do a lot of work. Quantity over quality, in this case is what is most valued. You must be at school – even though there is nothing to do. This way you have worked for your money. My thought process is MUCH different, but I’m not one to say what is the right way and wrong way to do things – this is simply what I have noticed.
Also, another aspect of Korean culture I find most frustrating is the extreme flexibility needed to work here. I have never thought of myself as a needy person, never really cared about looking ahead into the future very far to know what’s going on ahead in my life. However I have found that this might be because I never have needed to worry about what will happen because I always am told in advance. In America the schedule for the next school year goes out sometime during the first semester of the year before. You know almost a full year in advance what the next year’s schedule will look like. This is useful for people who want to go on trips and for people who need to plan weddings during breaks, etc.
School here started on March 4, 2013 and I received the calendar for this school year yesterday – March 13, 2013. Over a week AFTER THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTED I received the plan for the school year. I now know when my summer break will be. However it’s only two weeks long instead of the usual four weeks, and therefore I STILL can’t plan ahead for break because I don’t know if I will have to teach an extra class during that time or not. At the end of March I’ll know when I get my contracted two weeks off of school. And that’s just one example. It seems like every day lately there have been staff dinners or canceled classes that I find out about an hour before they happen – or in the case of cancelled classes, I usually find out they’re cancelled five minutes into class time. I find out because the students haven’t showed up and when I find them they tell me.
Now, I realize that these last few examples aren’t really due to Korean culture, but more due to my lack of knowledge of the Korean language. Since I can’t speak Korean fluently, I can’t read the messages that I receive and I have to count on others to tell me what’s going on.
This leads me to another aspect of Korean culture – self-obsession. Maybe that’s a little harsh, but what I’m trying to say is that the typical Korean is very obsessed with mirrors and humidifiers and make up and hundreds of creams for all different parts of your body. Moisturizer, BB cream, foundation, toner, cleanser, soap…the list is endless. I bet if I asked 100 Koreans how many lotions and creams they use on their face the average answer would be like 5. And that’s including boys.
Everyone tries to look their best. Everyone comments on everyone else’s appearance. Just yesterday a very kind and wonderful teacher friend of mine pointed at a student sitting on the soccer field and told me, “pig!” and laughed. This student was overweight by Korean standards (which means a little larger than the average American) and it was no big deal for a teacher to call him a pig because of it. Before a girls’ class yesterday I was chatting with a few students and one of them said, “teacher! She looks like Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story!” I denied it…because she’s a girl and looks nothing like Buzz, but the student then told every other girl in the room that her friend looks like Buzz and they all agreed and the girl just took it because that’s what you do here. If I would have stopped the girls from commenting, they wouldn’t have understood why I wanted them to stop. I would have found it offensive, but to them it’s just what her face looks like and it’s no big deal to say that out loud.
One more example – a student on Monday laughed when my co-teacher walked into the room. He must have found her appearance startling, though why he might have thought this, I couldn’t tell you. She’s about 50, shorter than me, but of average Korean height, and not at all overweight by my standards, but by Korean standards she’s not a stick, and therefore she’s overweight. This is probably why he laughed, but I was so upset with him that I hit him on the back of the head so he knew it. He stopped laughing – but I don’t think he’ll change his ways. Sigh.
Which brings me to the last point – physical violence. I’ve talked about it before, but I had no idea that physical violence in schools here was only banned 7 years ago!!! Korean friends I have made here have told me horror stories of their high school days – beaten with paddles, smacked with rulers…I’ve heard stories about staplers, too, but I doubt their truth. This means that violence in the classroom (and touching in general) is much less strict (and I mean MUCH) than in America. Students hit each other, teachers are more wary of touching their students, but I have seen many things that would not be appropriate in the states.
And now I have to comment on one more thing – I just witnessed a balloon releasing ceremony in honor of the first grade students’ entry into high school! Each student wrote a wish and attached it to a balloon filled with helium and together all 600 students let go of their balloons together, releasing their hopes for the future into the air. IT was a beautiful sight. Korea is all about symbolism, whether it be lighting candles for good fortune for the seniors, or releasing hundreds of colorful balloons for the good fortune of the freshmen, or eating a special kind of sticky rice cake on test day to help the knowledge “Stick” to your brain.
I love learning about this new culture. It makes me appreciate the finer points of my own culture and helps me question perhaps the lesser points of what I used to find common.

Burger Special: To Infinity… and Beyond!

Last week today we did a Fried Breakfast special. Today we’re doing a Burgers one. Now we’d classify many of the burger pictures we’ve chosen (they’re all copyright free, we’ll have you know) as looking a bit ill, or perhaps they’d just make you a bit ill if you ate them. We’ve also decided to go with burgers as, you know, the whole horsemeat thing in England has been amusing us greatly. If you’ve failed to pick up on this here’s the lowdown; firms have been using horsemeat in products which claim to be beef. Scandal? Yes. Fun? Yes. Hurrah!

Now we’re not sure why we used the Toy Story/Buzz Lightyear quote to promote today’s blog post, but looking at it now it just feels so right. Burgers are, after all, one of the most popular food things on planet Earth and we’re here to mock it derisorily. And why not? This selection of burgers will probably put you off your dinner, but there are one or two which we do give the thumbs up, so don’t go accusing us of being racist! So, hoist thy bibs up and fasten thy kilts for this is one heck of a Burger Special. For England, James?

We get things rolling with this onion bland-a-thon. How dry would this be? 7/10 dryness. And the bread looks… well, rubbish!

This one looks okay until you think just how dry and bland it looks. No. No, we’re not rating this at all.

We refer to this one as the “Disaster” as it looks so gross. Note the person is picking it up tentatively like it’s got some sort of disease. Which it probably has.

This has to be the world’s most brooding burger ever. It just oozes menace.

These look alright but, really, bland-a-thon! Where’s the veg and all that?

Dry and fried to oblivion, this looks about as healthy as eating semtex.

It’s the sauce on the fries which startled us here, plus the dinky nature of the burger. A bit harsh, eh? Maybe it’s the diet version. And we are presuming that’s a sauce on the chips… maybe it’s actually someone’s brains.

As you walk down the main corridor from Epcot to the World Showcase side you come across a beautiful topiary of the Lion King and Simba, whose detail is astounding.Proceed down this corridor and you’ re shouldered by evenly spaced vertical scrubs towards the Monsters University.

Although this is supposed to be scary, I found it hard to think badly of both Billy Crystal and John Goodman especially with these big toothy smiles, and welcoming waves. Finally in the space genre, one cannot forget Buzz Lightyear and to infinity and beyond….

As health promoters, so much of what we do involves storytelling. We can learn from places such as Pixar, because let’s face it… their stories are sticky. Almost anyone raised in North America can tell you who this guy is:

I stumbled across this while reading Chris Blattman’s blog: ChrisBlattman.com - he is an associate professor at Columbia University in the field of political science and international development. He updates his blog frequently and his posts vary enough that there is usually something for everyone, whether they are a policy geek or not. For now, back to Pixar’s rules of storytelling. I’ve listed my four favourites below. (Why four? Why twenty-two? Why not?)

#4, Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.

#9. When you’re stuck, make a list of what WOULDN’T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

The last of the four Walt Disney World parks is Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and I realize it’s cliched to say it, but while it’s the last it’s not the least. Hollywood Studios is AMAZING! I’ve already shared the photos from the girl’s Jedi Training School experience, which was totally incredible and jealousy inducing, but that was just one small part of our day.

There are just a TON of character meets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the lines were minimal compared to many of the other parks. There’s a bunch to do, yet this park doesn’t feel quite as overwhelming as the others (of course, by this point we had our system pretty much perfected – which really helps). And it’s not totally kid-centric either, which was great. This park definitely had the broadest appeal, with everything from Star Wars to the Muppets to Phineas and Ferb to Pixar’s greatest hits to classic Disney as well. We loved everything about this one. It was fabulous!

On Dating a Quasi-Radio Disney Star

Don’t do it. I swear to you: don’t do it. No matter how fruitful the connections, the opportunities, the sex—don’t do it.

You see, it’s not that dating a quasi-Radio Disney star wasn’t cool in it’s own right—frightfully turning the dial to AM to catch a snippet of one of the most overdone yet so damn catchy songs had its perks—it’s that logistically it’s not plausible.

The managerial-bound red tape was ridiculous. It takes a lot to be inducted into the clandestine child-drug-addict circle of fame (…so I’ve heard), and Action Item* was well on their way to kissing enough asses to get there. However, in order to “preserve the integrity of the innocent, young, single boy band image,” I was not about to be a blip on the fans’ radar.

Given my “look at all the fucks I give” attitude, this wasn’t a problem. When would I ever come in contact with a fan, let alone the far-away manager whose commands seemed to have descended from the sky? I wasn’t about to let some bitch ass band wrangler get in my way of my perfect college romance.

However, given Mark*’s “I’m going to cover up all the fucks I ever did” attitude, keeping me a secret was a priority. Though I was welcomed in his small group of friends and with the band, I was that persistent dust bunny that kept getting swept under the carpet. Facebook comments were purposefully ignored among the mass of fan mail, and a request to publicly acknowledge our blossoming love via Facebook relationship status was met with a resounding “no.”

But it’s not just that our secretive relationship was the crux of or even a reason for our issues—the kid was just too damn busy. Maybe I underestimated the capabilities of someone who traded a college education for a shot at a music career, or maybe I just didn’t understand the band slave dynamic. Mark poured all his energy and free time into answering emails, staying on top of social networking sites, and keeping fans happy. After hours of alternating between a computer screen and a Blackberry, he was too worn out to catch up with his long-distance girlfriend.

Maybe I’m giving him too much credit—the kid was a straight-up asshole. Despite the fact that he spent the earlier months attempting to woo me while on tour, that façade quickly deteriorated when I actually was able to spend time with him over winter break. Cute, meaningless texts turned into ugly, even more meaningless silences as my image of the perfect relationship disappeared from view. Where was my Radio Disney star?

We broke up shortly thereafter in a heated text message battle where I begged for a minute of free phone time only to be denied on the grounds of a “band meeting.” And as most text message break ups go, it was ugly. Real ugly. After that night I laid low by going out, partying, and making out with at least five people. I also repressed Action Item’s keyboarder from memory and resolved to never date a band member again. I’d say I got the upper hand on that one.

But life moves on, and *some other garbage quote like that here*. It wasn’t until recently that I’d noticed he’s dating someone new, a hairstylist from back home who was graciously allowed to post her relationship status with him on Facebook—how quaint. And even though that’s a telltale sign their band is failing and missed their calling as Radio Disney stars, and even now that it’s exactly a year since we broke up—I’m not bitter or anything—I still wince at the thought of what that relationship could have been otherwise. It would have been bad. Real bad. And I’m glad I got out of that shitstorm with my dignity and reputation in tact. Because, let’s face it: who really wants to be caught dating a Radio Disney star?

The Most Magical Place In The World

There was no way we could live in Hong Kong for a few weeks without taking a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland – the most magical place in the world (or at least, Southeast Asia).

Yes, it was smaller than the Disneyland/worlds that we’re used to in the states, and no they don’t have nearly as many rides — but we still had a blast indulging in out childhood fantasies and eating as much theme park junk food as we could stomach. I almost threw up three times. And these were pretty gentle rides.

My faves: The Runaway Mine Cars Roller Coaster in Grizzly Gulch (Bears take of and wreak havoc on a coal mine!), Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blaster in Tomorrowland (You fly through space and shoot laser guns to defeat Emperor Zurg along the way!), and of course…

SPACE MOUNTAIN! We went twice. It was just as amazing as I remembered it.

I am still suffering from vacation hangover and a little bit of post-awesomeness depression from our Disney adventures. It truly was a nice vacation in the Happiest Place on Earth. Rather than share cheesy shots of my family in the standard Disney poses, I’d like to show you my lens via Instagram.

The Tea Cups, or the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, at night were beautiful.

Space Mountain, a classic.

The Orbiters are a silly ride but the design is dazzling.

I was in love with the Mickey wheel at California Adventure. I took countless photos of it but this sunset is my favorite.

Mickey shaped food always tastes better. The churro is BY FAR my favorite, though.

Malificent the Dragon from the show “Fantasmic,” an outdoor display on the water by Tom Sawyer’s Island.

We stayed at the Grand Californian. I loved the lobby. It was huge and dramatic with all kinds of architectural details.

Mickey ‘soft’ pretzels. This actually looked better than it tasted. Hard as a rock.

Goofy’s Symphony on the water at California Adventure. I didn’t realize what a goofy Goofy fan I am. He is adorable.

Well it’s the start of a new month, can’t believe we already have 2 months behind us this year! To all my Welsh friends Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant hapus! It’s the day of the Welsh saint David and I can imagine many children back home being dressed head to toe in their Welsh costumes!

So, I think 1st March is a good date to start reflecting on how my “New Year Resolutions” have been going… well I’m going to be completely honest…. they haven’t! I’m pretty sure I’ve already broken every single one! But… a new month, a new start…. I must keep trying, right?! Otherwise what’s the point..?

So far 2013 hasn’t been too shabby! I’ve watched my little toddler turn into a 3-year-old boy! I’ve seen my niece turn to the lovely age of 1 and was very happy to see her first steps, at her birthday party! (Great timing or what?!) We now own a car so life’s been a little easier for getting around but it’s also been rather expensive… damn you petrol prices. I’ve also been arranging seeing friends a bit more and have already had one of my best friends stay up for a few days and have arranged for another to come over in a few weeks! So happy times ahead too! I really do miss all of my friends from back home and I get ridiculously home sick every now and then, even though I’ve made some great life-long friends in Gloucester, nothing beats a good catch up with your besties from school! So as you can see my social/personal life has been doing rather well so far this year, which makes me a happy girl.

Work wise though I have been slacking, I’m still struggling to find the happy balance of work/family/me time, which I think is a normal battle for the freelancers out there but I am definitely not anywhere near fixing that problem. I planned to draw at least once a week which even that I didn’t commit to! I have been working on bits and bobs but nothing major mainly experimentation to get the juices flowing. I have made a submission for Ballad Of… Magazine but I don’t want to show that until I get a response. It’s not my usual style so I don’t really feel comfortable/confident about it. I am happy to announce that I have now had 3 sales in my Etsy store!! Wooh! Which may seem a ridiculous thing to celebrate about but seeing as I only had 1 sale last year and I’ve had double that this year already, the only way is up, right?!

My First Tattoo

Over winter break my sister was home from college for a month. We had been wanting to get a matching tattoo for a while and she had already made ours on Photoshop. I asked my parents if I could get one over winter break instead of when I turn 16 (like my sister did) in the summer since summer is not always the best time to get them. My parents thought about it for a while, but finally decided that they were fine with me and my sister getting a matching one, even though I am still 15. My sister and I wanted to get a dolphin because we both love the ocean and beach, and also because my mom has a small dolphin tattoo as well. In part of the outline of the dolphin me and my sister wanted to get some words, so we chose to write “to infinity” and “and beyond.” I wanted to get the “to infinity” so my sister got the “and beyond.”

It honestly didn’t hurt that bad at all, I went into it thinking it would hurt a lot. I was surprised when I could hardly feel it and I was happy I wasn’t screaming and messing up my tattoo. I love my tattoo and I’m so glad I got it!
