Several years ago, my friend Kimo and I, on the spur of the moment, drove up to Lone Pine, California and hiked to the top of Mt. Whitney and back in a day. He was very patient with me, but essentially hiked me into the ground.  He now has a clutch of mini-hikers that he is trying to train in the ways of the outdoorsman. They arrived in Phoenix yesterday for the Thanksgiving break and I had a chance to photograph them at a nearby park this morning.  Here are three of the five minis:

El baile. Que gran tema!! La verdad que yo me la paso bien bailando, aunque claro, un sentido de ridículo medianamente desarrollado hace que no me largue a bailar en plena Plaza de la Cebada, y menos aún teniendo a semejantes maestros del meneo a mi lado!! Estos estaban dando cátedra en las fiestas de la Virgen de la Paloma.

Una vez leí por ahí, como una de esas premisas que debe llevar uno por la vida “Levante y baila, a nadie le importará que tal lo haces”, bueno… más de una mujer que tuvo que sufrir mis pisotones puede tener algo que decir al respecto, pero se puede decir que es una buena filosofía. Otra frase más picante dice que bailar, es el acto vertical de un deseo horizontal, pero ahí ya entramos en otros temas más profundos!!

Bailar como si nadie te estuviese mirando, total, el objetivo es divertirse ¿No? Además, es algo que podemos disfrutar durante casi toda nuestra vida, desde los bebés, que empiezan a dar manotazos al aire cuando escuchan una melodía que les llega, hasta mi suegra, que se queja de sus achaques de la edad, pero hay que ver como se pone a contonearse con todo su brío en las bodas!!!

Bailar, hacer fotos, pasárselo bien, vivir, es un buen mix para terminar este lunes.

Przeglądając ostatnio zawartość dysku w poszukiwaniu jakiegoś ciekawego materiału na bloga natknąłem się na ustrzelonego tego lata na Retkini “Desperado”. Jako, że ciężko było wpasować ten materiał w jakiekolwiek ramy panujące na tej stronie wymyśliłem sobie taką mocno naciąganą teorię… tak więc zaprezentuje wam tym razem krótką serię “Street Photo” w moim wydaniu. Osobiście nie szczególnie przepadam za tym typem fotografii ze względu na kontrowersje dotyczące praw autorskich, ciekaw jestem jakie jest wasze zdanie na ten temat?

I’ve had disappointing results pushing film, always seeming to get far more grain than is permissible or desirable. Recently while trawling through some forum somewhere I’d noticed someone singing the praises of Xtol and decided to give it a try.  I’ve had a roll of HP5+ sitting on the shelf for a while that I’d shot at 1600 with my Nikon N80, so I quickly shot another using the Leica M3 amd Canon 50mm combo mixed up the medicine.

Xtol is a two part powder developer so you need a bucket if you’re going to do five litres. I also have 4 clear glass bottles with stoppers from IKEA to store the made up solution. I did have five but shoved one under the tap too hard and broke the damn thing. I think these storage bottles are supposed to be brown but mine are in a dark cupboard anyway and thus far I have had no problems. I usually dilute it one to one after mixing and found the time quoted online always a tad excessive for my tastes so generally I knock of 20% and am much happier with the results. The Massive Dev Chart suggests 18mins for 1:1 dilution at 20 degrees for Hp5+ pushed to 1600, so at 23 degrees factoring in my reduced time, I went for 11 min’s.  There are some very fastidious people in the world of darkrooms and much as I like to be one I can’t be like that. Old Ansel Adams would kill me but there seems so many variables involved that ball park figures will do fine for the kind of work I’m knocking out. Anyway I’ve not forgiven Ansel for his treatment of William Mortensen but that’s a whole other blog.

 Nothing very exciting on the rolls but I do think the grain has improved from previous efforts. I went in the darkroom and printed some up at the weekend and thought some better pictures than I had taken wouldn’t look half bad. It seems to be that for the winter months on dull days this might not be bad way to shoot, as once you factor in a filter, 1600 isn’t a bad speed to be using. The scans don’t look as good as the prints but I think they still show that the grain is not too harsh.

Anyway my brother has been demanding cat pictures so I finally find myself in position to deliver at least one. It seems I’m at a ”three shots acceptable” per a roll stage with film at the moment so only these six made to the final cut.

Esto me llama mucho la atención de Vitoria. Como para llegar a la parte vieja todo son cuestas y escaleras, han hecho unas rampas mecánicas con techo de cristal para facilitar el acceso. Me flipa ese contraste entre tradición y modernidad, aunque necesito un angular para poder enseñarlo en las fotos (esto es una indirecta para reyes )

Funny how some cities look like miniatures but at the same time are so chaotic. Well, not Tokyo. I went up to the Tokyo tower that day, hoping either for some haze or extremely clear atmosphere and a view of mount Fuji. I got nothing of these though, not that day, not any other day I went there but I got a clear view of Odaiba.

A friend said yesterday “it’s better to dream that you’re someone than being no one”. I couldn’t agree more, but having mentioned that I wonder what makes me want to live there. You could say I expect big things from myself…
