Here are some of the things you can do if you visit our villa in Bali: write a book, plant a tree and have a baby (oops! sorry, wrong list…) have a bath, read a book, enjoy the spa, go surfing, ride a bycicle, surf the internet, go to see the city, go to the beach, enjoy the clima and the nature, get a tan, enjoy the life, drink some cocktails, found love, eat pastries, actually write a book, have some fun with the family, and many many more.

Apparently, I had successfully fooled the flu several times ever since the rain season began. Fall and winter in Holland are characterized by rain, short days and little sunshine during the day.

Many people complain about the local weather, but after having lived in the San Francisco area, I can say that it is not much more different here. The only difference is our means of transportation.

As you probably know by now, the majority rides a bike here to go from point A to B. And how do they do it when the rain season begins? Well, for that, there is a rain- season outfit that no Dutch person lacks in his/her wardrobe. It is the latest when it comes to the Fall/Winter fashion in Holland:

- Umbrella: Yes! Believe it or not, people carry an open umbrella while cycling. I found this quite silly because when it rains, it is also very windy and their umbrellas break right away and well, people get wet! LOL!

- Regular rain coat: this is good if the rain is not too intense. You will still get slightly wet, but it may be a good choice.

- Poncho: this is also a good choice and I think it is comfortable because you just wear your warm clothes underneath and easily take it off whenever you want.

- Rain coat outfit: this is probably the best thing to wear. I find it a little too uncomfortable because you need to put on the pants and jacket and then take everything off! However, it is still probably the best thing to stay dry out there, especially if the worst is still to come -according to the chart above I got from www.weather.com – I will get one of these outfits and I will make sure to post a picture of myself wearing it

Anyway, as you can see I do not have the proper clothing to protect myself against the rain and even though my bike was at the shop this week and I was traveling by bus, I managed to get sick. Fortunately, so far it seems like it consists of very mild sneezing and a runny nose but I hope it does not get any worse because I cannot afford missing school and my Zumba lessen!

Our project, simplicity in inner city bicycling, was at first glance a fun aesthetic opportunity in new trends, color, and materials. Our target lived / worked in an inner city environment with minimal space. Bicycling at this level can be more about fashion and culture than speed and performance. After the first few brainstorm sessions we knew there where bigger opportunities. The project ended up rethinking what a “frame” meant, getting ride of basic key components, and creating a new type of compact bicycling. Inspired by the first the “hobby horse” from it’s simplicity and secondly the cafe race scene. Each is an exercise in stripping something down to its core.

What’s that behind your eyes?  Some beautiful.  Some stark.  Some gay.  Some hiding beneath folded arms.  Barcelona is a blur of energy and a purring of anticipation of what to do next.  Everyone is busy.  They scurry and yell and skip and push their children in strollers and run along stairs and carry loaves of bread, which I must add only cost 75 cents (US) for a fresh baked loaf.  Also, you can buy enough produce for a meal for two for about a dollar.  Food is cheap and fresh and right around the corner.

This is truly a multinational city.  I listened to a waiter speak to a couple in English because they weren’t Spanish, but they might have been German or Norwegian.  And, across from them were some Asians, and in my neighborhood there are many Muslim women.  I imagine there are men too, but the women are noticeable for their head scarves.  It’s like the entire world is just outside my door, and it’s Saturday night so they are loud!  Sounds like drunken revelers at a sports arena.  Maybe they are playing a game?  I haven’t looked outside but they do all break into chanting here and there.

I felt a little out of sorts when I first arrived.  It’s very different from home (obviously).  Even Houston is a quiet place in comparison.  This city is BUSY.  Really.  But, I’ve mostly adjusted and am really enjoying my place here, save for a strange smell in the bathroom and children that think the stairs above us are for running up and down as fast as they possibly can about 12 hours a day.  Thud, thud, thump…

It’s really a beautiful city with beautiful sunshine – the best sunshine.  I really want to go see the beach, but am waiting for Miss K to arrive first.  I’m sure she’ll want to go, and there are a thousand other things to do here.  I went to the Cathedral de Barcelona today.  It’s a cathedral that was built upon the ruins of a Roman temple to some deity.  I don’t know which one, but it was awesome.  There were some active Catholics inside having a service at what looked like the tomb of a some saint.  What’s different from most cathedrals is that this one has an open inner courtyard.  Actually the whole church is basically open in the middle with some towering pillar structures around the edges, creating walkways and such.

So, I came to Barcelona to photograph it, but I’m thinking this city is more about the sounds, like the brass player in the subway playing the classical piece from 2001: A Space Odyssey.  Like the drummers, oh I almost forgot!!  The drummers at the wedding in the central plaza!  They were pounding out beats like you wouldn’t believe and everybody was dancing and jumping and shouting around the bride and groom.  Just amazing!!!

Le Logo de "L'Avenue Verte"

Le East Sussex County Council travaille actuellement avec des partenaires regionaux du nord de la France pour développer une “Avenue Verte” – un itinéraire en grande partie sans trafic entre Paris et Londres (via le Newhaven – Dieppe ferry) pour les cyclistes, marcheurs et amateurs de randonnées a cheval.

De Londres à Newhaven

Du côté anglais, l’Avenue Verte suit le parcours du National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 21 entre Londres et la côte Sud. Dans l’East Sussex, l’Avenue Verte comprend le Cuckoo Trail et Forest Way, fournissant plus de 30 km de vélo libre-circulation le long de vieilles lignes de chemin de fer.

En France: Dieppe – Paris

En France, l’Avenue Verte suit l’ancienne voie ferrée Dieppe-Paris sur 40km et s’arrête actuellement peu avant Forge-Les-Eaux. Une fois terminée, elle rejoindra Paris, presque entièrement sans circulation automobile.

La destination probable à Paris serait Notre-Dame.

It amazes me what some people learn to do that goes above and beyond what most people do with the same object, instrument, or “thing.”  Take this guy for example.  I recall learning to ride a bike in a relatively straight line down the center of the road to be a several week long, arduous adventure.  And this guy, Danny MacAskill not only does that, but jumps and hops and flips and spins and makes me sick with jealousy.  Check it out, it’s something amazing on 2-wheels, that’s for certain!
