The longer that I am here the more that I don’t want to leave lol. I think I’d know this place better if I used the public transportation however I am heavily discouraged due to the fact that all the passengers on the buses are men and mostly Pakistanis, not to be cynical but I’d be risking my safety. Although it is mainly all dessert when you drive further out of the city, what I like about being out on the road is being able to drive up to 120 and though it would be nice to go over that unfortunately they also have cameras on the road. And you don’t want to mess with the police, people are afraid of the them here.

The Effect of Similarity on Interpersonal Attraction

Byrne, Smeaton, & Clore (1986) / Gutkin, Gridley & Wendt (1976) / Kaplan & Olczak (1971) / Kurdek & Schnopp-Wyatt (1997)

In social psychology, similarity refers to how closely attitudes, values, interests and personality match between people. Research has consistently shown that similarity leads to interpersonal attraction. Many forms of similarity have been shown to increase liking. Similarities in opinions, interpersonal styles, amount of communication skill, demographics, and values have all been shown in experiments to increase liking.

Several explanations have been offered to explain similarity increases interpersonal attraction. First, people with similar interests tend to put themselves into similar types of settings. For example, two people interested in literature are likely to run into each other in the library and form a relationship (involving the propinquity effect). Another explanation is that we notice similar people, expect them to like us, and initiate relationships. Also, having relationships with similar people helps to validate the values held in common. Finally, people tend to make negative assumptions about those who disagree with them on fundamental issues, and hence feel repulsion.

An article written by Byrne, Smeaton, & Clore (1986), “The Attraction Hypothesis: Do Similar Attitudes Affect Anything?” may help to clarify the relationship between similarity and attraction. The paper was a critique of a study by Rosenbaum (1986). Rosenbaum created a four attraction experiment to prove that similarity does not lead to attraction rather dissimilarity lead to repulsion (Rosenbaum 1986). Rosenbaum found that similar attitudes do not lead to liking and therefore have no effect on attraction. Byrne et al. (1986) provided three main critiques of this finding. One, Rosenbaum did not compare similar attitude conditions with a neutral control condition and instead compared them with a positive trait condition .By doing this information that was left out led to the participants to already assume attitude similarity. Rosenbaum added information to the control condition without realizing the effect of it. According to Byrne, “human subjects think and their cognitive activity fills in information even though the experimenter may leave it out” (Byrne et al. 1986 p. 1167). Second, the proportion of similar and dissimilar attitudes varied methodically. Because attraction is influenced by proportion, the various numbers of similar and dissimilar attitudes are not seen as significant. Finally, he concluded that additional descriptive information should be treated qualitatively with all other information presented to the participants. Descriptive information would be physical appearance and occupation. The article concluded that Rosenbaum’s study did not prove that similar attitudes do not lead to liking. Byrne proposed the alternative explanation that having negative information about others leads to a straying away from others who are dissimilar. Byrne at al also suggested that those who have positive information would be more attracted to those who are similar and this will lead to building lasting relationship. There are findings that suggest people are more drawn to similarities such as age, race, educational level, beliefs and values and this in turn will enhance attraction (Byrne et al. 1986).

Similarity has effects on starting a relationship by initial attraction to know each other. It is showed that high attitude similarity resulted in a significant increase in initial attraction to the target person and high attitude dissimilarity resulted in a decrease of initial attraction (Gutkin, Gridley & Wendt, 1976; Kaplan & Olczak, 1971). Besides, similarity also promotes relationship commitment. Study on heterosexual dating couples found that similarity in intrinsic values of the couple was linked to relationship commitment and stability (Kurdek & Schnopp-Wyatt, 1997).

I always love watching the chess game between Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne from 1956. No surprise this game is termed as ‘The Game of the Century’ by chess community. This game contains a series of brilliant ingredients that always bring a smile to my face. For starters Bobby Fischer was only 13 when he played this game in the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament in New York City on October 17, 1956. On top of that, his opponent Donald Byrne was one of the leading American chess masters at that time and had recently won the U.S. Open Championship in 1953.

In this game, Fischer (playing Black) demonstrates noteworthy innovation and improvisation. Byrne (playing White), after a standard opening, makes a seemingly minor mistake on move 11, losing tempo by moving the same piece twice. Fischer pounces, with brilliant sacrificial play, culminating in an incredible queen sacrifice on move 17. Byrne captures the queen, but Fischer gets far too much material for it – a rook, two bishops, and a pawn. At the end, Fischer’s pieces coordinate to force checkmate, while Byrne’s queen sits, helpless, at the other end of the board.

Lessons to be learned from this:

1. In general, don’t waste time by moving the same piece twice in an opening; get your other pieces developed first.
2. Material sacrifices are likely to be effective if your opponent’s king is still in the middle and a central file is open.
3. Even at 13, Fischer was a player to be reckoned with.

"Teargarden by Kaleidyscope"

It’s been a while since The Smashing Pumpkins made any concrete plans on a follow up release to their 2007 “Zeitgeist” album (of which divided opinion at the time, but I still can’t help but think it was judged on its personnel rather than the music). A lot of changes have taken place since bandleader Billy Corgan reformed the band, most notably the absence of former members guitarist James Iha and bassist D’arcy Wretzky. As such, Corgan has come under some heavy criticism ever since. Recently drummer Jimmy Chamberlin also decided to leave the band (being replaced by 19-year-old Mike Byrne) but gave his blessing for Corgan to continue under the moniker (essentially making its founder the only surviving member of the original line-up). Still, despite these occurrences there will in fact be another Smashing Pumpkins release… and sooner (and more extensive) than you’d imagine!

Earlier in the week it was announced that ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope‘ would be the next installment of the band’s career and possibly their most ambitious to date (nearly twice the size of their epic double album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness“). The album will contain 44 (yeah, really!) tracks split into eleven 4 track EP’s. The tracks will be made available to download one at a time up until the 44th song is released. As if this wasn’t cool enough, Corgan emphasises that the whole project will be free! No strings attached! For the fans who like a physical product there will be a limited amount of the EP’s made and at the end of the period (when all 44 tracks are out) there will be a box set of the project. The concept behind the release is based on the Tarot and is musically described as being a return to the band’s earlier, more psychedelic sound.

The recording process has already begun and the first song is due to be released “around Halloween” and then in short intervals thereafter until its completion.

I’m happy to finally announce the plans for the new Smashing Pumpkins album.

Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope‘. The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won’t have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.

We will however sell highly limited edition EP’s (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EP’s will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EP’s will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EP’s will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal cd single. We may also offer other variations for sale, say for example a digital single with a demo version of a song. The commitment that is most important is the one I’m making to you: that the music of ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope‘ will be available for free to everyone. All 44 songs: free for ALL.

When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EP’s need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces.

The story of the album is based on ‘The Fool’s Journey’, as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic.

The music of ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope‘ harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.

I already have 53 songs written for the record, so I am quite confident that I already have much of the material that I would need to undertake such an extensive project. I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new Smashing Pumpkins music to you in a unique and exciting way.

The Greens will seek to amend Marrickville’s draft Local Environment Plan (LEP) before it goes out to public consultation saying it would change the character of the Inner West by allowing too much high-rise overdevelopment and stripping away too much heritage.

“Under pressure from the State Government, the draft local environment plan encourages five, six and seven storey flat buildings to dominate our urban centres,” said Greens Deputy Mayor, Councillor Fiona Byrne.

The future for Marrickville?

“The Greens do not want the Inner West to be dominated by block after block of multi-storey flat buildings built to line the pockets of developers but at the expense of the character of the Inner West.

“Six to seven storey flat buildings will be allowed all along Illawarra Road, from the Woolworths to Marrickville Road. Central Petersham will become a multi-storey apartment ghetto, while Dulwich Hill and even little Lewisham shops will be dominated by apartments.

“Heritage protection has been stripped right back from the current draft areas leaving much of the South of the Marrickville LGA area without protection.

“This is the plan for Marrickville that the State Government wants – overdevelopment that squeezes more and more people in multi-storey flat buildings.

“The community do not want to see the character of their local precincts changed so dramatically, that’s why The Greens will be seeking to amend the draft plan to protect the community against overdevelopment.

“We will seek to implement a maximum height of five storeys throughout the area, increase heritage protection and rezone some areas away from high density flat buildings to medium density townhouse style zonings more appropriate for the area.

“The Greens agree that we need to increase densities around transport hubs, but this does not mean we have to create high-rise ghettos that have failed in so many other areas.

“The Greens have been arguing for a mix of high density and medium density development that is more human in scale and provides better amenity for the existing community and the potential new residents of these developments.

“The Greens encourage the community engage in the consultation process to ensure the planning rules that will shape the future of Marrickville for the next decade will improve life in the Inner West.

Polkupyörät ovat mielessäni myös David Byrnen uuden Bicycle Diaries -kirjan vuoksi. Sen aion hankkia! Byrnelle pyöräily ei ole vain keino liikkua ketterästi paikasta toiseen, vaan hän on jo vuosia puhunut julkisesti sen ekologisista, taloudellisista ja terveyttä edistävistä vaikutuksista. Vuosi sitten hän myös toimi tuomarina, kun New Yorkiin etsittiin kilpailun avulla uudenlaisia pyörätelineitä. Miten hienoja taideteoksia! Ja söpö on myös herra itse ruudullisessa pyöräilykostyymissään.

In the latest Caputo Report poll completed last Friday, former two-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne and Rep. Artur Davis each received 39% of the vote.  I obviously did not expect a tie, but it won’t be surprising to see Byrne and Davis face off in the general election next November.  You don’t have to wait until 2010 to cast your vote in favor of Byrne or Davis though.  Vote in the next Caputo Report poll and let us know who you want to see  as Alabama’s next governor—Byrne or Davis?

Below is a complete list of the results.  I’m not surprised by most of them, with the exception of Tim James and state representative Robert Bentley.  Reports from the BCA governor’s race forum indicate that James fared poorly in the dabate.   Given the amount of time and money James has put into the race already, his campaign has to be disappointed with the lack of support he has received so far.  Bentley continues to exceed expectations, outperforming all but the two top vote-getters.  That is particularly impressive given that Kay Ivey and Ron Sparks have both won statewide elections and Bentley has not.

Succede di tutto nel round SBK di Donington. Il mondiale, virtualmente chiuso fino a due gare fa, si è straordinariamente riaperto, rendendo giustizia al pilota più forte del campionato delle derivate dalla serie.
Ben Spies dopo la doppietta negli USA, riassapora il cappotto in Inghilterra e aiutato dall’harakiri di Nori Haga, caduto malamente, si avvicina al leader del campionato.
Nelle qualifiche l’americano domina come sempre mentre al suo fianco parte un Biaggi in formissima; in seconda fila le ducati ufficiali.

Gara-1 vede Spies scattare insidiato da Biaggi ma Ben lo passa subito cercando poi di imporre il suo ritmo. Nei primi giri Biaggi, secondo, e Haga, terzo, riescono a tenere il suo passo ma poco dopo l’alfiere della Ducati è costretto a cedere lasciando il solo Biaggi a tenere testa al Terrore Texano.
La gara, priva si sorpasso per la testa della corsa, mostra però un Biaggi in forma strepitosa che riesce a rispondere agli straordinari tempi fatti segnare da Spies.
Ogni giro sembra essere quello buono per la fuga di Ben che però non va in porto; Biaggi rimane attaccato facendo sperare i tifosi per un ultimo giro ai ferri corti.
Spies tenta il tutto per tutto, scoprendo ogni sua carta e, tirando al limite durante l’ultima tornata, riesce a staccare Biaggi di un altro paio di decimi; a poche curve dal termine Max tenta una frenata più aggressiva e la moto, toccando il cordolo si spegne.
Attimi di terrore nel box dell’Aprilia ma dopo pochi secondi Biaggi riesce a ripartire ed a terminare secondo grazie all’enorme vantaggio accumulato in precedenza su Haga.
Spies quindi vince davanti a Biaggi e Haga; delusione per Michel Fabrizio che causa la rottura della prima marcia conclude in dodicesima posizione.

Gara-2 parte con la speranza di vedere di nuovo Biaggi lottare ad armi pari con Spies. Alla prima curva il romano transita in testa ma nel discesone successivo Ben lo risorpassa tentando subito la fuga.
Il piano dell’americano questa volta sembra andare in porto, il ritmo è troppo alto per tutti e il distacco aumenta inesorabilmente.
Dopo pochi giri però il fattaccio; nel penultimo tornante Biaggi scivola dicendo addio alle speranze di agguantare un altro preziosissimo podio, lasciando il solo Haga a lottare, a distanza, con Spies.
Haga però subisce i tempi record dell’americano e nel tentativo di rispondergli vola nel velocissimo curvone Cramier che precede il rettilineo Dunlop, finendo a terra malamente rompendosi polso e clavicola.
Tornerà a Brno a fine mese saltando i test a Imola.
Gli avversari più temibili per Spies escono quindi di scena e mentre il cowboy vola verso la decima vittoria (in diciotto gare!) dietro di lui si scatena una bellissima lotta a tre per il podio fra Michel Fabrizio (ducati) Shakey Byrne (ducati sterilgarda) e Leon Haslam (honda).
Byrne sembra esssere il più veloce ma le sue gomme cedono alla distanza; Hslam invece da spettacolo e sfogando la cavalleria della sua honda riesce a tenere dietro Fabrizio deliziando il pubblico con le sue bellissime derapate di potenza.
Male ancora le BMW che nonostante due piloti all’altezza, non riescono ad entrare nella lotta per la vittoria.
Suzuki invece causa l’infortunio di Neukirchner avvenuto a Monza, da la colpa dei suoi mancati risultati al fatto di ritrovarsi senza piloti di livello e dovrà attendere Brno per testare le condizioni del tedesco, pronto per un rientro-lampo.
Infine il prossimo appuntamente saranno i test collettivi a Imola dal 14 al 16 luglio dove le squadre proveranno gomme e assetti in vista del rush finale.

If Carlsberg made maths textbooks then they would probably make something along the lines of Oliver Byrne’s edition of Euclid’s Elements. In it Byrne tries to convey the propositions and proofs of Euclid’s Elements with as few words and as many pictures as possible. To make this possible he uses colour as integral parts of his diagrams. The book’s illustrations remind me of something Peter Saville might have produced in the eighties for Factory Records or something that might have come out of the Bauhaus. The illustrations look great, yet they manage to get across some really big ideas in a clear and simplistic manner. 1664 might have been a good year for beer but 1847 was a good year for maths textbooks.
