So the autumn weather is rolling in from the north and I intended to escape it. It was gusty and a broken cloud layer in Winningen, but visibility was good and I was in for some tailwind. Fine by me…:) What became apparent though was that I do have to practice my landing skills.

YAY!! I have had my first lesson!! C152 (JGB) much like the one pictured, although it had wheel cove

YAY!! I have had my first lesson!! C152 (JGB) much like the one pictured, although it had wheel covers.

The day was b-e-a-utiful, visibility was excellent. Could see Kapiti Island, Ruapehu, if it wasn’t for some cloud way down south would have possibly seen south island.

Pre-Flight

Instructor was all good. Did the pre-flight check, if I remember correctly, turn on the lights to check them, then start at the front and walk to your right, check for dents in fuselage etc. Check along wings for cracks and that ailerons move correctly etc. Check the oil up front. Check for water in the gas by putting a tube in three little holes. Check levels of gas in both wings. Check prop for cracks and that no bird nests are in front behind prop etc.

From there, check out the gear and do some paperwork. Once at the controls turn on ignition, check some other stuff. Turn on the gas tap, prime in a couple of times, start her up. Adjust the throttle.

Taxiing with the rudder pedals was pretty simple, toe forward for brake turn sharper by using brake on rudder side. Taxi at about 1000 rpm. Both toes forward for brakes. Point into the wind, do the final checks. Power up. Check Magneto’s. Dials, etc. (I’m sure I’ll find out more details as I go along

Taking off

Flaps at 10% (I think, maybe 15%) Ease the throttle to full. Keep it down the middle with the rudder pedals. 50 knots and ease back on the wheel. The plane lifts of the ground effortlessly. Ground gets further away, I try and concentrate on the dials, how the plane behaves, it’s quite responsive, keep it heading up on the same angle just above the horizon.

Flying

We turn right and head towards the training area. My instructor shows me what pulling back and pushing forward does. Then I do the same, up and down. Then left and right turns using the ailerons. And finally the rudder pedals, I found it interesting that even using only the rudder would cause the plane to begin to roll, as yawing one way would increase the speed of one wing, which would give it more lift than the other.

So practised that for a bit, as well as adding a bit of rudder with the turn. Was a lot of fun.

Landing

After that, we circled for a bit, there was a fair bit of traffic as it was a nice day and even the gliders were out and about. Then came in to land, I was at the controls but by no means landed the plane by myself. There was also a lot of glare from the setting sun which even the instructor admitted was quite difficult and almost a blind landing.

Down safe and sound though.

Next lesson is booked for Tuesday. Really excited to get back up there

Logbook

June 14, 2008 | C152 | JGB | Pilot in Cmd: H.Earle | Dual | 0.5 | Effects of Control

disclaimer: please keep in mind I have had one lesson. Don’t take my word for things or try and fly a plane based on speeds/settings I have entered lol
