Ulsan is a unique city that is located on the south eastern coast of Korea and is also know as Hyundai City. Hyundai is the heart of Ulsan and Korea. Hyundai is everywhere from Hyundai cars, Hyundai Bus, Hyundai department store, Hyundai health care products and etc. Hyundai put Ulsan on the map for being the wealthiest cities in Korea.

The majority of the cars in Ulsan are Hyundai. Rarely do you see other car brands. Every now and then you’ll spot a Mini Cooper or Honda. I saw a BMW once and an orange Lamborghini at the Hyundai Department Store.

The drivers in Korea are very aggressive. They remind me of New York City Yellow Cab drivers. Police officers hardly ever pull over drivers for speeding or running the red light. You really have to stop and look both ways when crossing the street. Pedestrians do not have the right of way. Also, when you’re walking on the sidewalk you have to watch out for those crazy guys on the scooters. There are no laws in Korea that forbids scooters to ride on the sidewalk. It’s like a video game out here. First you will see a guy on a scooter driving on the road and as soon as he hits traffic he drives on the sidewalks and goes through the red light.

The other day I was walking to school and I saw a young lady driving her small hatchback car and was driving through the side street and she scarped the side of the power line post. She had at least 10 inches to make it to the street and all I heard was errrhhhhhhhh erhhhhh! The side of her car was completely damaged. One word of advice for people who plan to visit Korea, stay out of their way!

Well, not long after my last post, I finally received a call from P, the Japanese Bondage gentleman.

Well, not long after my last post, I finally received a call from P, the Japanese Bondage gentleman. I was so pleased to hear from him (otherwise I would have cleared my day for absolutely no reason and it would have been a week since my last client), but I was also a bit put off because he called half an hour before i was supposed to be there. I explained that if he wished, I would be more than happy to quickly get ready and get there as soon as possible. I did also remind him, however, that I usually spend about three hours getting ready for my clients and I obviously would not be able to do the same for him. He agreed and not only did he pay for my travel expenses that I mentioned before (I usually charge a flat rate if I have to go outside of my regular zones), but he paid for my cabs as well, which equalled up to about £75. I don’t normally like for my clients to spend extra money on me like that, but it was the only time we could meet and it was going to go past 12am so it was necessary.

The bondage was sensual and an amazingly different feeling. the cotton Indian rope was definitely the softest rope I have ever felt and it felt wonderful when he was running it down my body, wrapping and circling my breasts. The praise I received over the site of my breasts and then seeing them bound up, and sticking out away from my body was exhilarating. I also have to admit that I loved the aesthetic look of it all. I wish I could have videotaped the bonding. He was so very gentle with it all, unrushed and very concerned about not giving me rope burn. I was able to even keep the rope. I will definitely treasure the souvenir and practice my Japanese Breast Bondage.

Over the past two weeks I looked into the taxis in Halifax. Why is it so hard to get a cab in Halifa

Over the past two weeks I looked into the taxis in Halifax. Why is it so hard to get a cab in Halifax? In every other city I have ever lived in or visited I have never experienced issues getting rides. But in Halifax it can sometimes seem impossible.

Halifax has a taxi zoning system. There are three zones;

Halifax city – 610 cabs

Dartmouth – 200 cabs

And the old Halifax County – 190 cabs

Cabs that have a license for one zone cannot pick up fares in another zone, with the exception of 11pm to 3am on friday and saturday night.

We broke up in to four groups and tested out the service. We tried to get cabs at 2am on a saturday night. The results highlight the problems facing this city. Watch our road test. It aired on the Nov 19th episode of the’fax

Watch my explanation of the issues facing the transport system in Halifax. The finger pointing and lack of leadership on the issue is shocking.

Find out

What metro transit says about night buses

Who the taxi companies blame for the problem

Who the chairman of the taxis commission thinks should bear responsibility

And what student unions are doing about it.

This video airs on the Nov 26th episode of The’Fax

Here is a video of people telling me about the issues that they have had with cabs in this city.

Don’t you think its time something is done to fix this situation in Halifax?

CAB attracted local music lovers with their annual Local Scene concert down in Paws last night. 6 b

CAB attracted local music lovers with their annual Local Scene concert down in Paws last night. 6 bands were supposed to play, but the last band in the lineup, My Indian Summer, never made it to the stage for unknown reasons.

The Grilled Lincolns started things off with a bang mixing a rock and a rap genre with their songs. Their manager Lorn Hinish promoted their music with CD’s and stickers. The Grilled Lincolns will be opening for Fools and Horses this Friday Nov. 20th.

Next in the lineup was Railaway. This easy listening rock band usually has a grand following in the Towson area. Compared to the Local Scene concert last year, their following wasn’t as loyal. Personally, I think this band was one of the best through the course of the night. “They sound a lot like OAR,” said XTSR Radio host Josh Flynn.

Next was Arden, another rock band. This band provided something the other bands did not- a female voice.

Then of course we have JMB, which you all recognize from reading my blog. These guys put on quite a show last night with lit-up glasses and their incredible saxophone player Russel McCray.

The Empire State was the last to go on. With this band, the saying ’save the best for last’ did not apply. Maybe my taste in music makes me bias, but from being apart of the music scene for years, I would have to say it wasn’t just that. Maybe finding a new vocalist would help this band out.

The entire concert was free, and you could listen to a live stream through XTSR radio. After the concert, hosts of On the Couch Brian Debbie and I plugged the show on XTSR Radio. Apparently, I have a sexy radio voice?

I found this blog quite by accident – http://lifeinmovingvehicle.blogspot.com/

The author, Dale, regularly posts pictures of the decorations inside Bangkok taxis in which he travels. Often they are excellent quality: impressive for pictures taken in a moving vehicle,

But more interesting is that he’s spoken with the taxi driver and usually has an interesting explanation or anecdote to go with the picture.

I’ve had bad experiences with scamming Bangkok taxi drivers so I tend to avoid them unless I have no alternative. Dale posted some good advice for travelers:

Following are a few simple rules to follow to avoid getting burned by cabbies in the “City of Angels”:

Do not take taxis that are sitting and waiting in tourist areas.

Make sure the driver turns on the meter.

Carry a map as a guide for yourself, but don’t expect your driver to use it or look at it.

Bring a business card or get the address of your destination written in Thai.

Do not believe some recommendations or claims from your cabbie such as, “I know this great seafood restaurant” or “The Grand Palace is closed today”.

I’d add two pieces of advice.

Avoid taxis without a “Taxi – Meter” roof sign like this one:

No Roof Sign

They are unlicensed and more likely to scam you.

Make a note of the taxi’s license number if you leave something behind or have a complaint. The number is displayed on the license plates front and rear in Thai characters and is also painted on the front doors. But more conveniently inside the taxi the number is in Thai and English letters on a sign on both rear doors. Call 1644 in Bangkok if you lose something in a taxi.

previous post here.

Modules can also contain visual representations of data, such as a control, a Windows Form, or a wizard page. These visual representations are referred to as views or SmartParts. As an example, a module that manages information from a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system has a view that displays a customer’s contact information. The module loads this view during module initialization. When the application executes the business logic that requires the customer contact information to be displayed, the application loads the customer contact information view into the shell. The following figure illustrates a module that adds two views to the root WorkItem and later displays the views in the shell.

The recipe generates the following items:

A view interface class. This is an empty interface definition for the view. You will modify this interface to define the public interface to the view. (The presenter class uses this interface to communicate with the view)

A view implementation user control. This class derives from UserControl and has the [SmartPart] attribute. This is required to support the inversion of control functionality, which will automatically associate service dependencies, controllers, and so on. The user control also implements the view interface and contains a reference to its presenter. The user control implementation is split into three files using a partial class:

ShipNewOrderView.cs. This file contains user code. Use this file to implement the view logic. If you run the recipe again for the view, the code in this file will not be removed.

ShipNewOrderView.Designer.cs. This file contains the designer code for the user control. Typically you do not edit the content of this file manually; instead, you use the Visual Studio designer.

ShipNewOrderView.GeneratedCode.cs. This file contains generated code to have a new instance of the presenter injected when the user control is created. The content of this file is regenerated when you run the recipe again for the view; therefore you should not edit it.

A presenter class for the view. This class extends the Presenter base class defined in Infrastructure.Interface project and contains the business logic for the view. You will modify this class to update the view for your business logic. The implementation of the class is split into two files using a partial class:

ShipNewOrderViewPresenter.cs. Use this file to implement the presenter logic. If you run the recipe again for the view, the code in this file will not be lost.

ShipNewOrderViewPresenter.GeneratedCode.cs. This file contains generated code which gets regenerated every time you run the recipe for this view; therefore you should not edit it.

SmartParts and SmartPartInfo

SmartParts are the visual components of an application. You can create SmartParts by customizing a standard user control. To enable the consumer of a workspace to provide rich hinting and extra information about a SmartPart, workspaces use an implementation of ISmartPartInfo that the SmartPart author can add to their controls.

The ISmartPartInfoProvider interface

The ISmartPartInfoProvider interface contains only one method named GetSmartPartInfo:

previous post here. Developers can use the Smart Client Software Factory to develop smart client app

previous post here.

Developers can use the Smart Client Software Factory to develop smart client applications composed of independent, but collaborating, modules. Productivity increases because each developer (or team) is able to concentrate on a specific task. For example, developers of service components work with only the business logic in the component; they do not have to be concerned with background issues, such as threading and security or the appearance and behavior of the application.

Applications built with the Smart Client Software Factory have a design that delineates the difference between writing shell logic (requiring expertise in Windows Forms, user controls, and appearance and behavior), infrastructure components (built only once per application or re-used from other applications), and business logic (the user interfaces, logic, entities, and service agents of the specific application). This means that the application architecture supports developers and teams that have different concerns during the creation of an application. The figure illustrates an example of a smart client application architecture that supports concerns of different teams and individuals with different expertise within a team.

Modules are distinct deployment units of a Composite UI Application Block application. You use modules to encapsulate a set of concerns of your application and deploy them to different users or applications. The Smart Client Software Factory makes a distinction between two different types of modules: business modules and foundational modules.

Business Modules

A business module represents the conventional Composite UI Application Block module. It has at least one WorkItem (specifically, a ControlledWorkItem) and contains business logic elements. Typically, it includes some combination of services, views, presenters, and business entities.

The Smart Client Software Factory reference implementation contains examples of business modules. In the Branch Client reference implementation, the BasicAccounts.Module, BranchSystems.Module and CreditCardAccounts.Module projects are business modules. These modules encapsulate the logic for the different types of back-end financial systems. For example, the BranchSystems.Module module contains business logic to manage a queue of customers. This logic includes determining the user interface elements to display based upon the current user’s role.

When you use the Smart Client Software Factory to create a business module, the Add Business Module recipe creates both a Module class and a ModuleController class. As with all Composite UI Application Block modules, the Module class derives from the ModuleInit class. In the Load method of the Module class, the recipe generates code to create a new ControlledWorkItem and add it to the application WorkItem hierarchy, as shown in the following code.

The root folder of the project contains two classes, Module and ModuleController. The Module class derives from the Composite UI Application Block class ModuleInit. The Composite UI Application Block calls the Load method of this class on startup. The Load method contains code to create and run a new WorkItem. This WorkItem is the module’s main WorkItem.

The ModuleController class contains methods that you can modify to customize the behavior of the module on startup. For example, you can add services or display user-interface items. (In the next task you will modify some of these methods.)

The project also contains the following folders:

Constants. This folder contains four classes named CommandNames, EventTopicNames, UIExtensionSiteNames, and WorkspaceNames. You can modify these classes to define module-specific identifiers for your commands, event topics, UIExtensionSites, and WorkSpaces.

Services. You use this folder to store the implementation of business services.

Views. You use this folder to store views.

Foundational Modules

A foundational module is a module that either provides services to the shell and other modules, provides a layout, or both. It does not implement a use case or contain a WorkItem.

In the Branch Client reference implementation, the BranchSystems.Layout and Infrastructure.Module projects are foundational modules. The BranchSystems.Layout module does not contain a WorkItem (there is no ModuleController class). Instead, it contains a view to provide the layout of the shell form’s user interface. The Infrastructure.Module module provides services (for example, caching) to other modules in the application.

Module Loading and Initialization

The Composite UI Application Block provides a service to load modules when the application starts. It uses a catalog file to determine the modules to load. The default name for this file is ProfileCatalog.xml. The following XML shows the contents of the ProfileCatalog.xml file for the Disconnected Service Agent (with CAB) QuickStart.

When the application block loads a module, it uses reflection to determine if the module includes a class that implements the IModule interface, and executes the Load method of that class. You implement the IModule interface (typically by deriving from ModuleInit) to initialize and run the module’s WorkItems.

UI Extension Sites

Most Windows-based applications use common user interface elements throughout an application. The Composite UI Application supports the development of shared UIElements by shell developers that module developers can access. For example, menus, toolbars, status bars, progress bars, sidebars, action panes, the notification tray, and so on. Shell developers are responsible for the creation of these components, and module developers can create instances of the component and access their properties. To allow modules to extend a shell user interface element, shell developers register the shell element as a UIExtensionSite. (A UIExtensionSite is identified by a string.) After a UIExtensionSite is registered, other parts of the application can access and extend that UIExtensionSite.

After a module is loaded, it can add elements to the shell’s UI Extension Sites. For example, a module can add menu items to the shell’s MenuStrip to expose the module’s features. If the entry for that module is removed from the catalog, the module will not be loaded when the application starts. The application will continue to function, but the menu items for that module will not appear. The figure illustrates a module that adds menu items to the shell MenuStrip.

Associate a command and command handler with the launch bar icon

Applications will often contain more than one control that invokes the same method. For example, a menu item and toolbar item may both run the OpenFile method.
The Smart Client Software Factory guidance package includes a solution template named Smart Client S

The Smart Client Software Factory guidance package includes a solution template named Smart Client Solution that you can use as the starting point for your smart client applications. The solution includes recommended practices and techniques; it is the basis for the procedures and automated guidance included with the software factory.

In Solution Explorer, expand the projects in the Source\Infrastructure solution folder:

The solution contains the following projects:

Infrastructure.Interface: This project is the interface for the Infrastructure module and contains only the elements that need to be exposed to other modules of the application. It is composed of service interfaces, constant definitions, commands, business entities (only those that are passed between modules) and other shared elements such as general purpose base classes. We don’t want to directly reference the projects that contain the code. Instead we want to hide the code behind interfaces in a separate library and reference the interface library. Infrastructure.Interface is this interface library. It mainly contains interfaces, with some simple classes.

Infrastructure.Library: This project contains the implementation of common components used by a set of smart client applications. For example, it includes the service to retrieve the profile catalog from a Web service. Contains the bulk of the new code that this SCSF solution gives us. In fact it contains about 2000 lines of code, including such things as the Action Catalog, and support for loading modules using sources other than ProfileCatalog.xml.

Infrastructure.Module: This project is a Composite UI Module that acts as container for the implementation of elements that are shared across projects in your smart client application. When the CreateSolution recipe is executed, this module is added to the Profile Catalog. This means that Composite UI Application Block loads the Infrastructure.Module module when the application starts. When created, this project is empty. You modify it to include the implementation of elements that different modules of your application will use, such as services. Infrastructure.Module is an empty module project. It is intended that any code that the developers want to add to the infrastructure section of our solution will go in here.

Shell: This project is the basis of a typical Composite UI Application Block application. It contains the startup form and the root WorkItem. It is very similar to the start-up projects in any sample application: it has a start-up class (ShellApplication) which (indirectly) inherits from FormShellApplication. It has a form, ShellForm, which is the containing window for the application. It has a ProfileCatalog which will contain the composite application modules to be loaded.

Workspaces are components that encapsulate a particular visual way of displaying controls and SmartParts. The Composite UI Application Block includes the following types of workspaces:

WindowWorkspace. This workspace enables you to show and hide controls framed in a window.

MdiWorkspace. This workspace enables you to show and hide controls and SmartParts in MDI child forms.

TabWorkspace. This workspace enables you to show and hide controls and SmartParts inside a tabbed page.

DeckWorkspace. This workspace enables you to show and hide controls and SmartParts in an overlapped manner with no visible frame.

ZoneWorkspace. This workspace enables you to create a tiled workspace layout.

Showing controls through workspaces allows you to consistently display, hide, activate, and monitor the parts shown, independently of the visual style in which they display. This allows the appearance and behavior and the layout of your shell to evolve independently of the SmartParts hosted within it.

User Interface Integration

With the Composite UI Application Block, developers can compose smart client solutions from a number of discrete parts that are hosted within a shell environment. The shell developer can define a general layout to host user interface elements. User interface component developers can create components that are hosted in the shell. The mechanism of communication between the discrete parts of an application and the shell is through the root WorkItem.

Every Composite UI Application Block application contains a root WorkItem. The root WorkItem is a container for components that are shared across the application. These shared components include visual parts that can be extended by modules. For example, the shell application can expose a MenuStrip as a UI extension site (a UI extension site is a Composite UI Application Block user interface element that is designed to be extended by different components in an application).

The figure illustrates a Composite UI Application Block application that exposes a StatusStrip and MenuStrip as UI Extension Sites.

Andrew Sullivan points to an interesting post by Ryan Sager on New York City taxi drivers being required to let customers pay with credit cards, a move resisted by the taxi drivers.

The story boils down to loss aversion blinding the cabbies to two salient facts about credit cards: 1) They make people spend more, 2) They can be programmed with “default” tip amounts much higher than what drivers were typically receiving with cash.

…The effect of credit cards on our spending is particularly striking. I think we all have an intuition that plastic makes us spend more. This study (PDF) shows that people will bid more than twice as much for an item (in the experiment, NBA tickets) when allowed to pay with credit card instead of being restricted to cash — far more than even I would have guessed.

One of the pleasures of riding in a New York cab (other than the joy of getting stuck in a traffic j

One of the pleasures of riding in a New York cab (other than the joy of getting stuck in a traffic jam even at midnight and, more importantly, the joy of learning new curse words that were not even used in Omkara), is the conversation with the cabbies and the gyan that they so readily give you on how best to lead your life. It seems to me that most of my Caucasian friends have not had similar experiences. I guess the demographics explains this – a majority of the cab drivers are of South Asian or of Middle Eastern origin and seem to feel more at home when they advise passengers who share a geographical and/or cultural affinity with them.**

The most friendly and the most concerned of them are Sardar unclejis. They inquire solicitously of my background and about my family. Their every sentence starts with a “beta” which make me feel like reaching over and giving them a hug, even if the essence of what they are telling me is that I must be immoral since I am a girl living alone They speak nostalgically of villages left behind, of joint-families brimming over with uncles and aunts and numerous cousins and kids and grandkids, of simpler lives and times gone by, of aspirations and of providing better lives for their families, of the emergency, of corruption and politics, of hope for a better India and the dream of eventually returning home.

Many of the cab drivers hailing from Pakistan invite you to listen to their collection of haunting ghazals and beautiful nazms. Their knowledge of Urdu poetry is enviable. They amicably discuss the commonalities that they share with their Indian neighbors and regret the futility of the love-hate relationship between the two countries. At times you get a glimpse of what could have been, if political reality had kept its distance. I have never had the opportunity of conversing with them during the course of a closely contested India-Pakistan cricket match. Perhaps, I might then have come away with a less naive solution to world problems

The Afghani, Irani and the Arab taxi drivers talk mostly of the importance of families and of the need to sacrifice for them. Invariably, especially in the case of Afghani cabbies, they gush over the fake Indian cultural ambassador – the latest main-stream Bollywood release and you get a sinking feeling that the Ash menace is spreading much too swiftly. They also reflect over ideologies, conflict and peace.

Interspersed between these gems would be advise over whether I should apply for a green card, whether I should get room-mates or continue to live by myself, whether I should get married and go home to India, or not get married and go home to India, whether I should be religious, an atheist, an agnostic or a scientologist, whether success is all about material wealth or about relationships, and, ironically, whether I should speak to strangers But if the price to be paid for the interaction is some unsolicited advice, perhaps the price is not that steep. What say you?

** Apologies for the stereotypes that have crept in, but they are based on my experience.

I missed this the other day, but here’s Leafs coach Ron Wilson taking a classic shot at reputedly-horrible tipper Patrick Kane prior to Friday’s game with the Blackhawks. Sure, Kane got Chicago rolling later that night with the game’s first goal in his team’s 3-2 win, but I’ve still got Wilson as the winner in the whole exchange.
