After Thanksgiving, we’ll be serving up a new Winter Dessert Menu here at Boundary Bay Brewery. We like to offer up desserts that celebrate the flavors of the season and this new Winter Menu is full of hearty, warming desserts perfect to ward off any winter chill! Look for our new menu during the first week of December!

Winter Crumble

Winter Crumble: a sweet walnut crumble tops a wintery fruit filling of pears, apples, dried figs and cranberries. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A sweet treat to balance the bitter winds of winter.

Ski-Lift Chocolate Mousse: a rich chocolate mousse spiked with peppermint schnapps! One bite and you might think you’re dining in a chalet up on Mt. Baker with this new take on a winter warm-up enjoyed by powder hounds around the world.

Chocolate Stout Ice Cream Cake

Chocolate Stout Ice Cream Cake: house made caramel ice cream is sandwiched between layers of bittersweet chocolate cake smothered in a warm chocolate sauce. Both the cake and the sauce are flavored with Boundary Bay Brewery’s own Oatmeal Stout. A great dessert for sharing…if you have the will power!

Sticky Pecan Pumpkin Cake: Thanksgiving has come and gone but if you haven’t had your fill of Autumn flavors you CAN have your cake and eat it too! Pumpkin pie meets pecan pie in this delicious cake with a sticky sweet layer of caramelized pecans covering a decadent pumpkin cake topped with Oatmeal Stout caramel sauce.

I have often mentioned that we all are a little psycho in our own little way. I like trying to work

<3

through the things that make me a little psycho. I would love to understand why I react the way I do – which is a part of the reason I have decided to study industrial psychology:

I have identified a couple of things that I am trying to work on:

1. Cabin fever. This has been a struggle of mine from my early teenage years. In my late high school years, I trived on keeping busy – in and out of my house, always busy with some sort of activity that needed to be done. These days I have coffee with friends or simply go to the shops more often than I really need to. I just don’t feel like going home and over weekend, I always find a reason to get out.

2. I see afternoon naps as a waste of time. Occasionally I fall asleep in the afternoon and I will have a lovely nap! But I won’t go and lie down with the intention to have a nap. This must be some kind of sleep disorder, yet to be named?

3. When I go through a painful experience, like a break-up, I don’t deal with it properly. I don’t really cry, I don’t feel angry. I read and I watch films and then I will cry a bit. But I won’t sit and deal with it properly. This is a thing I know I need to force myself to do, sit with the pain and write down my emotions.

4. I am not the type of person that will invite you into my house. Not the greatest of hostesses, not that I cannot do it, just that I don’t prefer doing it. I am however having a party for Logan, this I think will help me, deal with this issue!

I am sure I have many more, those are the things I can think of right now. In the meanwhile, what are the things that make you just a little psycho?

Last week, around here at least, it officially became a new season. Our Beer Garden here at Boundary Bay Brewery closed up for winter when the hop vines were cut back and the tent was taken down. Thankfully, saying goodbye to our beer garden season also means saying hello to Cabin Fever and to the beginning of the holidays.

Cabin Fever, our winter seasonal beer, was released at the beginning of November and has been on tap here at the brewery since. Next week, on Wednesday November 25th, Cabin Fever will finally be available in our 22 oz. bottles too! (And, luckily, our new 4-pack carriers for 22’s will be available then too!) For those of us here in Bellingham, the appearance of Boundary’s Cabin Fever signals the opening of Mt. Baker (hopefully!) and the beginning of skiing/snowboarding season. It conjures up memories of past winter nights being warmed by this big, hearty beer and the spicy stews or rich winter dishes this beer pairs so well with. For me, it is a tradition…a ritual that I need to mark the coming of winter.

And, speaking of traditions, Thanksgiving is once again upon us. We will be open on Thanksgiving from 10-2…for beer to go ONLY. There will be no food service or bar service available. But, you can stop in and grab a few 22’s, a growler or even a couple kegs to grace your Thanksgiving feast. Now THAT’S something to be thankful for!! On Friday, November 27th, we’ll reopen for business as usual and take part in Downtown Bellingham’s Shop Where Your Heart Is event. Fight Black Friday madness and Buy Local instead. Help make our community stronger and celebrate downtown with a week-long independent holiday extravaganza! This year’s event includes specials at participating businesses, live music, free refreshments and prizes to welcome you to the holiday season downtown! Visit www.DowntownBellingham.com for a list of participating businesses…including us. During Shop Where Your Heart Is you can score 15% off our new 4 pack 22 oz. bottle carriers…with mix and match 22’s!

Our Christmas Brew-tique will be up and running and jam-packed with Boundary Bay goodies to satisfy your holiday gift shopping needs! We’ve got lots of new stuff coming in like fleece jackets, winter hats and stickers for your bicycle. Plus, all the old favorites you’ve come to love (like disc golf discs and bike jerseys)…and some new colors for our traditional hoodies and t-shirts too! Starting Wednesday, November 25th, a personal shopper will be at your disposal between 4-8pm Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays and 12-8 pm on Saturdays to help you stock up for the season! But don’t worry, you’re not out of luck if those hours don’t work for you. If you’re shopping during other hours, you can just take your bounty up to the bar to purchase it or shop online through our website.

Bring on the holidays…Boundary Bay Brewery is ready!

Alright. So I can see how these websites/blogs/fansites can end up three years out of date now. My lack of motivation, inspiration and free time have kept me away from jackercrap. I suppose it hasn’t been that long and I had already stated that my updates would no longer be daily. I’ll stop crying now.
I wanted to give a quick summary of my trip to New Hampshire. I also wanted a helmet but I’m still waiting…
Day 1 – Gerry and I left New York around 7pm and arrived at his girlfriend’s parent’s house in Connecticut around 9pm. We did the obligatory shooting of the breeze and I watched Gerry and the father talk about the new truck. It was life altering to say the least.

Day 2 – After staying the night and picking up some supplies we needed for the cabin we left for NH around 7am. The drive alone was about 6 hours but we stopped at a grocery store and Whallmart to stock up on phoods. By the time we got to the cabin it was snowing lightly and our butts were numb. We quickly unloaded my packed to the roof van and got settled in.

Days 3-7 It’s hard for me to distinguish specific days in my mind once we were actually at the cabin. Most days included some backgammon and Scrabble. Gerry had never played backgammon before and he really blossomed into a wonderful backgammoner. That’s a word right? Could I use that in Scrabble? So yeah…wake up around 9 or 10 in the am and begin breaking the fast. Then would come the morning crap in the outhouse. For reals yo. We were “roughing it” as they say. We were also “throughing it” too. Then the afternoon was generally spent doing music related stuff and luning the ch. We sampled all sorts of sounds out there like chipmunks farting. At night we’d watch a movie or two and we were always dining the ner. We watched Drag Me To Hell, Trick ‘r Treat, Adaptation, 12 Monkeys, UHF, Brothers Solomon, Primal Fear and the appropriate Cabin Fever. I hadn’t seen Drag Me To Hell and Trick ‘r Treat previously and I really enjoyed them both. I haven’t lost hope for the future of horror just yet.

In terms of leaving the cabin we only made a couple trips. We went to a nearby lake and shot some footage for possible inclusion on one of our upcoming youtube smash hits.

We also got some local pizza one lonely evening. We got to play some Terminator 3 (would’ve preferred 1, 2 or Salvation) pinball and I watched Gerry shoot stuff on one those Buck Champion 6000 deals.
Day 8 – We woke up early for the long ride back to NYCitti. We made a quick stop in CT to drop off the stuff we borrowed. The shower I took when I got home felt so delicious. We took two “showers” while we stayed at the cabin. We would boil some water which we would dump into a bag (a shower bag!) with a little lever to slowly let out water. We had to do this outside in freezing weather in a little shower cubicle while the turkeys and pheasants watched.

I could go on and on about all the little details of our trip but…what happens in cabins is shown on TLC late at night. It was a great trip. The ends.

I know it’s been a while when I have to go back and re-read my last post to see where I was going. I’m going to figure out how to start a Language Enrichment Page here on myblog so that those of you who’d like to check out the activities, bookmark the page, or simply appreciate not sifting through the archives will have somewhere to check. In the meantime, here’s 3 of 4.

Fisher Price Parking Garage and Ramp, Ages 1yr+

This toy is a great language enrichment tool. You can talk about direction, colors, numbers, turn taking, etc. The following is an example of how to use the FP Parking Garage to encourage talking in young children.

First, choose something you’d like to target. For example, are you trying to get your little one to practice asking for things instead of grunting and pointing? Then send the car down the ramp, clap and make a big deal of it. Scoop the car up. Hold onto it and when your little guy starts to point and “eh” for it, tell him- “say _____.” (You decide based on his ability what you’ll accept. It might be as simple as “buh” or as clear as “car”). When he makes an acceptable attempt, give it to him. Clap and praise him when he hits the target sound or word. Repeat.

You can apply this strategy to other activities by setting up the environment so that your little one has to make a request for something. You hold the key, so to speak.

Color The Sounds, Ages 2+

Sit with your child and draw or trace and color the letters of your child’s name.

Talk about the sound each letter makes:

For example: CARTER

                C-/ k/, /kar/, /kaen/, /kaendi/, /kourn/

                A -/ae/ ,/ haet/, /baet/, /maet/

                R-/ raebIt/, /rouz/, /raen/, etc.

Cut the letters out and practice spelling his name.

It’s quickly approaching the time of year when our thoughts turn inward. It’s time to cozy up our homes with a warm blanket or a new set of flannel sheets. Freshly baked pumpkin muffins and a hot cup of tea comes to mind as the perfect afternoon snack. I am not a fan of winter but I do enjoy cozy thoughts, like a big bowl of homemade soup, (wide egg noodles, chicken stock, roaster chicken, chanterelle mushrooms, fresh herbs and lots of garlic) a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream, or a pair of fuzzy slippers and a thick fury blanket.

I’ve begun the process of cozying up my home with a few softly scented candles and a new fofur sofa throw. I’m currently on the hunt for the perfect pair of cozy slippers and a new pair of woolen mittens. The long dark winter of cold and incarceration makes me feel as though I’m being punished, which initiates the sense of entitlement that forces me to treat myself to a few comforts along the way. I have yet to make it through a holiday shopping season without buying myself a new pair of warm pj’s and a fresh set of flannel sheets. The notion that finding the perfect pair of boots and a few other toasty accessories will somehow make the winter a little more tolerable has been debunked but that doesn’t stop me from trying it again and again. So I’m gearing up for the up-coming months of hibernation but I’m trying to enter this season with fresh eyes and an upbeat attitude. A few months of cozy incarceration never killed anybody, right? If you said right, then I have to ask- how well do you know Junie? Cabin fever here I come!!!

October is already over and cold weather seems to be upon us. But don’t despair! Our Cabin Fever will officially be on tap Friday, November 6th. This winter warmer has a dark red-brown color and a rich malty flavor that will complement your favorite spicy dish or any rich, hardy meal.

Specially brewed and bottled for the Pacific Northwest winters, this beer has been cold conditioned for a smooth, dry-hopped flavor. Made with Mt. Hood, Warrior and Crystal hops, this big beer has a 7.2% alcohol level and is deceptively strong! Just the thing to ward off the dark nights and cold weather. Our Cabin Fever has won a number of medals including a silver medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup (also won a bronze medal at the 2006 WBC!), the gold medal at the 2004 NABA, a bronze medal at the 2002 GABF, and a silver medal at the 1999 GABF.

And, if you just can’t wait for the OFFICIAL release, join us for our Thursday Cask Night Happy Hour on November 5th. We’ll be tapping the very first keg of our Cabin Fever for a little pre-release party! Cheers.

Luckily, for those who don’t have the luxury of hanging out at the brewery as much as some of us, Cabin Fever will be available in 22 oz. bottles on Wednesday, November 25th!

It’s time for the 10th Annual Alpine Safety Awareness fundraiser! This Saturday, in the Boundary Bay Brewery beer garden, for dinner (all you can eat fish tacos!), live music by Bentgrass and a silent auction/raffle from 5:30pm to 10pm. Pay attention all you winter sports lovers: this is a great opportunity to get some great deals on winter gear AND raise money for a cool organization at the same time. Plus, our winter seasonal beer Cabin Fever will be on tap so you can celebrate the coming of winter RIGHT!

The Alpine Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) is a community-based effort that uses local resources to teach alpine safety skills to children and adults throughout the Pacific Northwest. We aim to save lives and reduce injuries by proactively increasing alpine safety awareness. Since 1999, we have reached more than 30,000 students and adults through our programs. Our goal is to make safety a habit among all winter outdoor enthusiasts. The Alpine Safety Awareness Program was founded in Bellingham, Washington in 1999 by a local ski patroller after several preventable deaths occurred in the backcountry of the North Cascades mountains. The curriculum is based on the Canadian Avalanche Association and their Snow Smart program with the goal of saving lives by preventing future avoidable accidents from happening.

Bentgrass is a Bellingham string band that plays traditionals, originals and unusuals! They play superb bluegrass loaded with quick-picking songs and energetic, fun original tunes and, somehow, the sound that Bent Grass achieves really brings you back to a time when things were a little slower and simpler.

Join us this Saturday for great local music and IN support of a wonderful local nonprofit organization founded right here in our own community! This is an all ages, family friendly event. Tickets $10.00 each, $30.00 for families. Dress warm (you’ll be in the beer garden)! If you can’t attend Saturday’s fundraiser, but would still like to help, donate here!

Halloween -

Thus begins the siege. But Troy must eventually fall for Aeneas to found a new nation.
That day is not foreseen.

Thus begins the storm, the crash of the breakers, the straining and agonized moaning of the boards. Batten down the hatches, take in the sails.
Cabin fever.

This agony may be what others refer to as boredom.

Later: one forty am.

Close call, nearly lost… to the monkey, tried to pay with credit card but no one was selling. Luckily for me. An half hour when all distinctions dissolve resulting in death. Masturbation brings release, and an ejaculation in less than thirty seconds. Like blowing my nose. Maybe the purveyors of flesh have blacklisted me, perhaps I did not tip J well enough.

The fantasy: The girl arrives. I inspect the merchandise, physically, then command her to wash the dishes and pick up the clutter in the apartment.

Powerless, broke college student wants power/ dominance.
powerful rich lawyers/ business men want humiliation?

Where’s the on off switch? I want to turn the addiction off. I am now using twelve step terminology.

My power beginning to coalesce. Coalesce? (The dictionary is too far away) I feel less fear, but those telephone calls made me nervous.

How has it come about that I can say no to the video peep show – but not to home service by a trained professional? Was it the fantasy or just the fact that I wouldn’t even need to leave the house for a fix?

I will always wonder “How can I, why have I done this to myself?”

All highs and lows in one day. Creation to prostitution.

In honor of Halloween, the blog posts for this week will be horror-related. Enjoy!

I am a big horror movie fan. I like all kinds – bad ones, good ones, campy, psychological… I draw the line at some forms of torture porn, but it’s a free-for-all for all the others. Now, some of these may be counterintuitive, especially since they aren’t all part of the “good horror” canon. But although I’m the ideal horror audience (I jump at every screeching violin), there’s a difference between being truly scared or horrified and just jumping at shadows. Some of my favorite horror movies don’t actually have a scene on this list (i.e. The Descent, The Exorcist, Silent Hill, etc.) The following five are images or scenes that continue to haunt me in that delicious way that good horror (even in bad movies) does. They are in no particular order, just as they come to me.

1) The Ring: There is a lot about this movie that I like, and a lot that is downright creepy through the atmosphere created. But it’s only a split second in the movie that I think is the most frightening thing I’ve ever seen. When Rachel and her sister are talking, her sister talks about how she found her daughter (Amber Tamblyn) in the closet and says something about her face. We hear the screeching violins of terror, but it’s what we see with the screeching violins that freaked me out so many times, even when I learned how to brace myself. Amber Tamblyn’s face is distorted, her eyes wide and white, her jaw unhinged, and in that second of freak-out, her head drops forward. It’s a masterpiece of horror editing and make-up.

2) The Sixth Sense: Another movie that is driven more through mood than in-your-face horror. But there’s a scene in it, the first of Cole’s ghosts that we see on screen, that freaks the hell out of me, and still continues to roil my stomach. The ghost is a woman who was abused in life and slit her wrists to escape her husband. She regularly opens the cabinets and drawers in Cole’s house. The way she acts, the screeching violins, the look on Cole’s face and the tangibleness of his fear… I still don’t like watching it.

3) The Grudge 2: I know. It wasn’t a great movie at all, although I watched it just for Sarah Michelle Gellar (dude, what did the hair stylist do to her hair?) and Amber Tamblyn. I still watch it now and again for some background noise. But there’s this one scene in the American family part of the movie in which the daughter goes to see her best friend, who has been affected by the curse. The best friend looks sick and is holding a half-full half-gallon of milk. As the daughter watches, the best friend begins to drink the milk. And she keeps drinking… and drinking… and drinking… until she’s drunk it all. The daughter asks if her friend is all right, but the girl doesn’t answer. Then she heaves and begins vomiting the milk back into the milk jug. And then, as the daughter leaves, she starts drinking it again. Unusual choice, but effective.

4) The Others: It had the unfortunate luck of coming out after The Sixth Sense even though it was made at the same time. Still, I quite love it just for the religious imagery and themes. But there’s this part where the old, blind lady supposedly possesses Anne, so you see this slightly blurry old lady face and an old lady hand when you expect to see Anne’s youthfulness. It’s hard to adequately describe just how damn creepy that is.

5) The Blair Witch Project: It’s hard to make something scary in the daytime. But when Heather finds the gift the Blair Witch left the two of them after Josh disappeared and yelled for them in the night… it’s just a moment of blood, a moment of removed teeth, a split second of an implied tongue… another masterpiece of horror editing. You don’t need any more than that after all the inexplicably creepy stuff that happened before. And the strangest thing is that you don’t really ever see anything. It’s only rated R because of the language. But the movie makes your imagination work to torture yourself. It’s amazing. And horrifying.

And in case you’re curious about what I think the worst horror movie is, the one that I watched once and got rid of as soon as I could? That would be Cabin Fever. There’s nothing I hate more than a movie with excellent production and horrible follow-through. I mean, I understand that the real blood-and-gore horror movies love to come up with creative ways to kill people. But one of the guys dies because a guitar knocks his harmonica down his throat. I’m sorry. That’s just awful. And it had such great potential! Flesh-eating diseases are terrifying! And there was this good scene where one of the girls is shaving her legs in a bath tub, and the razor starts peeling away skin. But the rest was just so… sophomoric that I couldn’t keep it. I just couldn’t. It’s not the rampant gore that gets me – I liked the remakes of Halloween and The Hills Have Eyes, after all, and the Saw movies. It’s the stupidity.

When I woke up yesterday, I felt alright, but as the day wore on, I started feeling worse and worse. I was stuck at the Spectrum office writing, editing and listening to the candidates for this week’s SA presidential elections from 10:30 a.m. to about midnight. By the time 10 p.m. rolled around I was wearing the sweatshirt I’d worn that morning, my boyfriend’s sweatshirt, his jacket and my gloves, sprawled out on the office couch, trying to sleep in between shivers.

Surprise, surprise, I didn’t go to class today, spending most of the day asleep in bed.

Someone please explain to me why I feel the urge to repaint my bedroom walls?

Being sick makes me feel antsy. I get really bad cases of cabin fever very quickly. But it always creates an urge in me to do the most random things that I probably wouldn’t think about doing otherwise.

It hasn’t been too bad today, probably because whatever was making sick seems to have already passed. Right now I merely feel the urge to do my laundry, clean and redecorate my room, knit a sweater and rearrange my bookshelf.

The more involved the illness, the more ridiculous it gets. When I had my wisdom teeth out last winter and subsequently spent a week in bed, I spent a lot of that time contemplating how much I really, really wanted to go dirt bike riding. And climb a mountain.

Hopefully I’m right and this little bout of sickness has passed, or my next post might be about how I broke my legs sky diving.

It has now been thirty-seven solitary consecutive days that I have not left my room and already my double is staring at me from the other end of this small enclosure. Maybe I should be worried that I only find it slightly unnerving to see my face looking down on me, his eyes fierce and his stare deliberate.
For the most part he doesn’t move, he doesn’t speak, he just stares and every once in a while will light up a cigarette and begin to pace the small room, a glass of whiskey mysteriously in his right hand. Sporadically will I get up to grab his attention but he only stares and I give up as I take to the seat behind my desk and a swig of whiskey to help calm the nerves. I suppose I’ve gotten used to his appropriate company by now. He wears a gray v-neck sweater paired with mustard colored jeans, no shoes seeing as we’re indoors, but a mustache does delicately sit atop his upper lip, the ends carefully twisted into a familiar handlebar shape.
I don’t have a mustache, I think to myself, but much of my person has gone to the gutter and my entire face has begun to take an unkempt appearance.
He will look outside through the only window in the room, a certain distancy on his face, the look you would expect a child with newly injured ankles to stare out his window on the morning of a snowfall. I don’t know exactly what he might be thinking, but I can only guess, I wonder if he wishes to be outside with them and be the only boy on the block with a red scarf. Maybe then, and for the first time, would I get to see him smile.

Only a few minutes ago as I laid in my bed hoping to fall away into the comfortable desolation of my mind—the only other place besides this physical enclosure that I could visit—did he stand beside my head, thoughtful, he took a knee and sighed. Rubbing his temples with the most miserable look on his face he stated the following, “You’re a sick son of a bitch to have thought me up.”

I closed my eyes and tried my best to fall asleep.
