The Christmas season is here and people are buying lots of electronics. I am putting this message out there to save people lots and lots of money. If you are planning on getting a great deal on a new HD TV or DVD or Blu-Ray player, you are going to need cables to connect them. And if you actually save money, avoid buying the cables at the big box store or convenient electronics store.
Go Online!
Here’s why: At Best Buy, ABC Warehouse or Radio Shack, they will do their best to sell you six(6) foot HDMI cable for $60-90. If you can resist and take the time to look online when you get home, you can find similar and similar quality cables at MonoPrice.com or WarehouseCables.com for $15 to $20…. you can send me half of what you save if you want!

For some reason, this fall has seen the revival of my knitting habit, which has been dormant for over a year. My new addiction is cables – turns out they’re not that difficult to do, and they look really impressive!
After getting the hang of it with a simple scarf with two rows of cables, I needed another project to keep me going – and then I saw this adorable hat while I was in Anthropologie -

cold-blooming hat by anthropologie

How great are those cables?? It looks so comfy. And I thought to myself, Hey I bet I could make something very similar to that with my new cabling skills.

small hat!

My first attempt didn’t work out so well…I made it much too short; it was almost yamaka sized. Very disappointing!
I hate to rip out knitting that I’ve done (all that work wasted!), but in the end what was I going to do with a hat this size?

I started over, this time with a wider rim, and made it taller, incorporating a second color. This one turned out much better. Practice makes perfect, right? And as I intended this to be a Christmas gift for someone, I’m glad it’s actually a wearable hat now!

completed cable hat

Yay! One Christmas gift down, many many to go.

Having recently acquired a Nintendo Wii, I am both proud and ashamed to report that I have all three

Having recently acquired a Nintendo Wii, I am both proud and ashamed to report that I have all three current-gen consoles, all in black. I’ve decided to give my opinion on each one.

I’ll start with the Wii. The Good Things include the fact that the girlfriend can and will play it, and the classic games available on the Virtual Console. Super Metroid is once again taking up a lot of gaming time. I love it so very much. The other games I’ve played thus far are also quite good and a lot of fun.

Now for Bad Things. We know the graphics aren’t up to the standard of the other two games machines, but this is most definitely not helped by the, frankly, shit cable situation. With the console you get composite cables. Memories of composite cables are fading, so I’ll remind readers that they are the yellow, red and white trio of cables. They suck. Composite is only one step ahead of ye olde RF and gives a fuzzy picture with dull, washed-out colours. So you go and pay Nintendo more money for component cables to get a decent picture. But once you have that, the VC games look crap because Nintendo can’t be bothered to alter them, so at the moment I’m swapping the cables around accoring to the games I’m playing. That would be almost acceptable if the VC games were free, or even cheaper. But you can buy a NES, a SNES and an N64 and their games for peanuts on eBay, so the VC games aren’t such great value, plus you can’t get all the games you would if you bought the original consoles. No Contra 1, 2 or 4, no Mario Kart, no Goldeneye, I could go on . Downloading them for the Wii is more convenient but not that cheap and not yet comprehensive. Why does it take so long to add content if they’re not even taking measures to make them compatible with modern cables?

You only get one controller. The other consoles have this issue as well, but with the Wii it’s particularly annoying because it’s Nintendo pedal it as a family ‘n’ friends machine. Multiplayer is the big seller here; in order to play the Wii as it was intended and marketed, you need another magic wand. An additional Motion Plus controller will set you back fifty pounds. FIFTY POUNDS!

This means (all at time of writing, of course) that to play the £165 console with one friend and half-decent picture quality, you need to spend a total of £235. You can get an XBox 360 Elite with two games and a year’s Gold Live membership for the same sort of money. Another fifteen notes will buy you a 120Gb PS3 slim. And they both come with HDMI cables.

The Wii is a cool machine and I’m glad I have one, but in the current market, they are not cheap and they are not good value for money. I’m knocking Nintendo here, not the Wii. It’s good at what it does and I would recommend it to people, but only if they’re still listening after I tell them that buying the necessary kit and a couple of games will set them back £300.

After a couple false starts (and frogging sessions) my Cable Pullover is well underway.

I quickly learned that this isn’t a project to be done in front of the tv. I’ll have to save those Netflix dvd’s for the back of the sweater, which is all stockinette (exciting!).

I didn’t realize from looking at the pattern picture that there would be so much bobble on this sweater. What is bobble, you ask? It’s a little doo-dad made by increasing several times into one stitch, knitting back and forth a couple rows, then decreasing back down to one stitch. It looks like this:

After the first row in which bobble was made, I put the sweater aside and had a time of reflection over whether or not I was a bobble type of person. (It would be easy to eliminate the bobble from this pattern). I decided that I am undecided. So the bobble will stay, and I will just have to become a bobble type of person.

I struggle to remember the resistor codes, I forget them all the time and it’s really important to know them when dealing with cables because most cables are labeled with these colour coded bands so that we can trace cable routes. I remember doing them in school but that is years ago now, who would of thought stuff that you learned at school would be useful for the future?

So I found a handy mnemonic to learn hopefully make them stick in my brain;

Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Virgins Go Without

Simple, cute mittens are always in style. Add a funny name and how can you lose? The name is a combination of “cable: and “bobble” inspired by the off-center cable which features small, easy bobbles for interest. The afterthought thumb is simple to knit and the shaping at the top of the mitten makes a very flat top. This is a great project for some luxury or handspun yarn.

The purple mittens shown were snatched up by my sister last year. I really enjoyed working with this yarn; it was my first Debbie Bliss yarn if you can believe it. The second pair is being knit in Twilley’s Freedom Spirit in Fire. I love the subtle self-striping and the way it highlights the cables and bobbles.

Recipe (1 serving):

1 1/2 – 2 large eggs

half of a ‘walla walla’ onion

fresh or dried herbs

1/2 C (or more, depending) of milk

cream for taste preference

salt, pepper, to taste

feta cheese

Mix the eggs, milk, onions, and cream together. Add the herbs. Pour into a soup crock (that makes one serving size) and place in a pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat water in a kettle on the stove (1/2 C). Put the crock (that is in the pan) into the oven. Pour the hot water into the pan so that the soup crock is surrounded by water. Bake this for 45 minutes.

Remove soup from the oven very carefully! Sprinkle feta cheese on top and enjoy.

Progress on knitting…

I’m getting there! I began fingerless mittens for my father (also a Rowan pattern) which I am knitting from dk 50% wool/ 50% mohair yarn. It’s a beautiful yarn, and knits smoothly! I’ll be putting up those pictures in the next post.

Also, while I’m working on my weebly website, I’m going to be fixing up things here, too.

All it does is rain in england.

Okay so when i set up this blog i was planning on updating it every wednesday and sunday. Well. that was 2 or 3 weeks ago and this is the first time i’ve done it since! My bad. though as no one will probably read this i guess there’s no expectations to uphold right, as opposed to everything else i do.

So today i was supposed to go to this youth leadership training but i really didnt enjoy the first one so backed out. and for some reason whenever i see sophie m i feel so angry, like i just want to smack something and think horrible thoughts. this cannot be good. so anyway i bailed, in the excuse that i needed to do work for school this week. that is true though its currently 21:43 and i’ve done no work..this is very bad as i have 2 timed essays tomorrow! english and philo, one is much more valuable than the other but i should really have tried.

in other news, i lost my phone cable so i cant upload pictures of daily life. i’ve been taking a load randomly on my phone camera (which incidently is pretty crap) and want to upload them so when i find the cable i’ll get on that.

an interactive blog might actually capture someone’s attention for once.

Our friends Louise and JP (who live in London but are Danish and Dutch, respectively) just had their first baby, a little girl named Caya. I have been hoping for the opportunity to knit items for baby girls, so I jumped on this one! I have had the pattern for the Presto Chango sweater in my Ravelry queue for ages now, and after knitting it, I highly recommend it for any knitting skill level. It is simple and quick, but with the buttoning front panel, you can go wild by making multiples to change out (in case the one the kid is wearing gets messy) in various stitch, lace, or cable patterns. So far I’ve made just two, and am making a little seed stitch bordered hat to match (see Robin’s Egg Blue Hat.) I have yet to buy buttons for the set, but when I do I’ll post an updated picture of the final product.

I knit this with Vanna’s Choice Baby in colorway Goldfish, which is a kind of salmon (arctic char?) pinky-orange. It looks girly without being blatantly, predictably PINK. My only other experience with Vanna’s Choice was the original version, which was not as soft and caught on your hands while you knit. Her baby yarn, on the other hand, is quite soft and squishy, and machine washable. The sweater took up almost an entire ball of Vanna’s Choice Baby (maybe 10 yards left?) before I knit any front panels, so I would recommend 2 balls if you use this yarn, with which you’d have plenty to make multiple front panels, a hat, booties… and make a great set for under $10.

If you’re using a webcam such as Logitech, Microsoft, Creative etc. You want to make sure you

If you’re using a webcam such as Logitech, Microsoft, Creative etc. You want to make sure you have installed the drivers properly to your computer. If you’re using a mac you will have to figure out how to install your web cam to your mac. Then once your cam is connect, either the webcam software will pop-up and it will show your cam connected. If you’re using a mac and your not able to use a webcam or video device on your mac to test your camera is connect you can go to the website www.testmycam.com.

The website www.testmycam.com is all good to make sure your computer and web cam is ready to use for broadcasting on your web cam site and to test out lighting and your microphone or you can log into your model log-in page for your web cam site and test it in there before you go live in your adult video chat room. Another method of testing if your web cam is connected to your computer is by opening an instant messenger platform Skype, MSN, Yahoo whatever you have on your computer. You would go into the web cam settings or audio/video settings you do not need to chat with anyone to test your web cam unless you want to.

You always want to make sure you have a good video card installed in your computer. You should have determine this when your purchase your computer. If you do not have one you can get them installed easily. Now if you’re using a video camera and you want to turn it into a video web cam there is a lot more options involved. If your not really interested in learning some technical stuff then getting a webcam is your best bet for now.

Connecting with a RCA cables is probably the simplest way to turn your video camera into a video webcam. Every video camera comes with RCA cables, because they are used to connect to so many things your VCR, Television, and even your computer. If your camera does not come with RCA cables then you want to look around to see if you can buy one that is compatible to your video camera. The manufacture website usually has them, or look on eBay for it. If you’re wondering what the RCA cables are they are the cables that are red, yellow and white. Picture on the left .

Connecting with a S-Video cable is another easy way to connect your video camera to your computer. If your computer comes with an S-video port and your camera has an S-video cable you can connect your camera. I personally haven’t tried this myself I usually go with connecting with RCA cables. Your camera might not come with the S-video cable but they usually have them for sale on the manufacture website. Picture on the right

There is many ways to connect using the RCA cables one of them being directly into the back of your desktop computer usually if they have the video capture card built in, or you can buy one and install it yourself. Osprey makes capture cards which are easy to find anywhere you might find others around. You plug in your RCA yellow cable into the capture card and it will recognize your video camera is plugged in. Another method if your not able to get a capture card installed or if your using a laptop you can buy an external one they are called usb video capture devices; Dazzle, Roxio and Diamond Multimedia make one. The video capture cards that go into your computer are also called tv-turners, but since they have made so many external video capture cards it might be easier to get an external one then an internal one.

Connecting with a fire wire cable is also pretty easy to connect with. You want to check out if your camera can connects with a fire wire cable some video camera do not have a fire wire option. Once you find that out you can use a fire wire cable to connect to your computer. Easily just make your computer supports it to connect using a fire wire.

Connecting with USB cable some video cameras come with a USB cable for the Sony HC-62 video camera the usb cable is the same cable that connects to blackberries So you might be in luck to try if it works for your blackberry and your video camera. Apparently it’s an universal cable so you could save a bundle if you have one for more than one device. You can also connect your video camera to your computer using the usb cable as well if your usb cable is too short to reach your computer. You can also get USB extension cables usually these days usb cables are version 2.0 also keep in mind some video camera do not turn into a video webcam using the usb cable. I found out that the Sony Hc62 does not

PC1: Windows 2000, PC2: Windows XP Pro
K: Logitech Ultra-Flat Keyboard, V: Sony SDM-S71 LCD, M: Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse

At first I wasn’t too pleased with the F1DK102U, and certainly after reading the reviews here and elsewhere identifying problems which I had begun to experience – keys getting stuck so that they continuously repeat, left arrow for instance, KVM getting stuck on one PC with both LEDS lit up on unit so that it always switches away from the other running PC after a couple of seconds, no hotkey just the stupid KVM.EXE systray icon to click – I wasn’t too thrilled with my new purchase.

Then I found a solution to the hotkey problem – whack ScrollLock 4 times in quick succession and it switches!!!! The original poster said 6 times, but 4 seems to work for me – so now I’ve ditched the KVM.EXE software and systray icon. Why Belkin did not put that in the user manual, it s a deal breaker for many! Maybe it doesn’t work for all OS/keybd/mouse combinations.

The stuck key problem simply requires that you switch away from the affected PC, wait 5 secs for the keyboard to disconnect, then switch back and once the keyboard re-connects, the behaviour has stopped.

Finally the staying on one PC problem can be solved by powering down the KVM unit for a minute – disconnect both USB leads from each PC. But it only happened once to me.

Added to the fact that in spite of what Logitech says, the Logitech SetPoint mouse software can detect my mouse, so that all the extra buttons & functions on the MX1000 work, which was not the case with my old PS2 KVM, I’m now more than satisfied with the F1DK102U!

As well, another poster pointed out that plugging the keyboard & mouse into a small USB hub connected to one port on the KVM frees up the other USB port for a printer!! I’m typing this with one USB port free, I’ll try the printer later.

Absolutely Useless – Joshua Inifer – Melbourne, Australia.
This unit has been consistently the least reliable piece of hardware I’ve owned. I have had the same random switching problem as every other one-star reviewer, from day one, and after 2 replacement units.

It requires some sort of magic to determine the exact sequence in which to power up hardware in order for this KVM to work correctly… I work as a service tech, so having to shut down my main machine every time I want to connect a second machine for diagnosis totally defeats the point of having a hot swappable KVM.

Steer clear at all costs!
Works for me. – Gary M. – Texas
I have one of these at work and one at home. Both are about 2 months old and both function as advertised. One PC video is set at 1600×1200 and the other at 1280×1024. Both produce good images through the switch.
ISSUE #1: When rebooting one PC the switch may get “lost” and must be unplugged and reconnected. It then works ok.
ISSUE #2: There is no keyboard or “hotkey” switching. This is a minus but the software switch does work correctly.
ISSUE #3: There is a delay of 3-4 seconds after switching before the mouse and keyboard are re-enabled.
ISSUE #4: The USB connector for the switched PC is on a fairly short wire. The distance between the video connector and USB connector may be an issue.
EQUIPMENT: Desktops, Toshiba Notebook. WindowsXP, Windows 2003 Server. MS 4000 Ergo Keyboard, MS 3000 Comfort Optical Mouse, MS Wireless Mouse.

Simone is knitting up a storm making a selection of delightful Christmas tree decorations. They’ll be various in design and in the traditional colour combination of Christmas white, red and green. Because Simone’s using a thicker ply yarn and larger needle side than specified in the pattern they’ll be big enough to be stuffed with tasty snacks – great gift idea!

I’m so proud of this little number and it’s cute as. Made in merino 3 ply yarn, home-grown.

The lace design worked in a 16 row pattern – can’t say it’s a favourite but overall effective and a little bit different.

These are the first ever socks crafted by Simone and they turned out great albeit a rocky beginning. She’s a convert now and has heaps of plans and designs lined up.

The travelling scarf – Raewyn is all set to send this one on its merry way. It had the glam treatment of a photo shoot down on Lyall Bay beach before we met tonight.

The blue cabled piece is Raewyn’s addition.

Needle Food is the yarn brand – cool name – and the neck snug is almost done. The deeper shade of blue is much lighter in the pic.

I’m underway on a lacey 4 ply merino jersey (pink jersey with collar, above) in the beautiful green yarn I purchased last week and the pattern is gorgeous.

Wendy worked on the pocket of the second front piece of her WIP hoodie.

We’re having a Christmas knitting bash to finish off the year in a couple of weeks. If you’ve come to iKnit this year watch this space for details.

It’s remarkable how quickly things can reverse sometimes. One day you’re minding your own business and the world seems to fall apart in front of you. You slowly pick up the pieces, put them back together. And sometimes, what you get in the end is better than what you thought you had at the beginning.

I’m happy to say this is one of those cases. I couldn’t be happier with the end result.

The pattern was simple and fun, and my ‘in the round’ modifications didn’t cause any trouble. If anything, it convinced me that I’m able to leap knitting problems with a single bound. Combine this and the Fair Isle tam success, and I’m a knitting superhero! I laugh recklessly in the face of knitting karma.
