Larry se rehusaba por completo a una reunion del programa SEINFELD, pero cuando se da cuenta que esto le puede ayudar a recuperar a Cheryl, accede a la idea. Larry se molesta con Jason Alexander cuando este se rehusa a compartir consejos importantes, así como cuando consiguen boletos para los Lakers.

My last day at my internship was unlike any other day I have spent at Cablevision News. When I stepped into the control room on Wednesday morning, after driving twenty minutes down the red light-infested Route 9, I was told that four people had called in sick. As a result of this, I was actually given work to do.

Time seemed to fly by as I edited stories and set up the CG list, which is a computer that creates the names and titles of interviewed people that one can see on the nightly news. I found my last day to be fast-paced and stressful, and I liked it. I enjoyed having things to do in order to fill out my day instead of staring at the clock and waiting it to be five.

Not only were there fewer employees working on this day, but the teleprompter was not functioning, which was occupying the rest of the people working there. This left the other intern and myself to carry on the duties of the studio in order to get ready for the nightly news. I was given jobs to do on my own and I felt actually needed in a place where my presence has been constantly pushed into the background.

I wish that every day that I interned at Cablevision News was as fun and exciting as this one. At the end of the day, I almost felt remorse, since I would not be returning on Monday morning; well, almost. Especially after I was congratulated by my supervisor for stepping up to the plate and personally applauded by the entire news team.

As I walked out of the studio after a long, hard working day, I turned around and took one last look at the Cablevision building. It was in that instant that I recalled all the times I spent leaving this place aggravated, annoyed, and with thoughts of quitting. But I did not quit, I finished my internship and learned a few things from my experience.

I have learned that I need a job with a definite schedule and actual tasks to do. My internship has ultimately taught me that this job is not for me and solidifies my choice in becoming an English teacher. In a shocking turn of events, my internship has given me all I ever wanted; to know that I am making the right choice. So, thank you Cablevision News, for making me realize what I didn’t want and allowing me to see what I did.

What have you learned from your internship?

The New York City Council is voting on a resolution this morning supporting the idea that Internet service providers cannot discriminate against web traffic on their networks. As gestures go, this resolution supporting net neutrality is more symbolic than it is useful, and to that end has already yielded a couple of photos of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg shaking hands and looking concerned about the future of NYC broadband.

However, New York City is a nice case study for competitive broadband, so I hope Genachowski took notes while he was there. Verizon, (s vz)  Time Warner Cable (s twc) and  Cablevision (s cvs) all serve the city (although they don’t all compete head to head in every block), so some residents there have access to both fiber to the home and cable’s wideband service using DOCSIS 3.0. Our own Ryan Lawler, who lives in Harlem, is paying $33 a month for Internet service from Time Warner Cable, which currently has the monopoly in his building. However, he says he just got a note informing him that Verizon FiOS will also soon be available, so we’ll see what happens to his cable speeds (which are currently 9 Mbps down and 500 kilobits per second up) and service in the next few months.

The state’s CIOwants to collect real data on broadband penetration and speeds so that it can get a sense of customers’ level of satisfaction with their service as opposed to just knowing which areas have broadband and which don’t. A Congressman from the state is also attempting to pass legislation that would give the FCC the power to regulate certain aspects of net neutrality and broadband access. So given the competition, better data collection and consumer-friendly legislative efforts, I hope Genachowski is doing some learning, not just politicking for a symbolic victory on net neutrality.

In the current economic environment, everyone is buzzing that newspaper and magazine subscription rates have been getting killed. And it’s the combination of the rise in social media tools (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) and digital content consumption sites (Hulu, broadcast network sites, etc.), and the decline in the global economy that’s leading to a significant drop in discretionary income among households, and movemenet away from more traditional media. Many blogs, research firms such as NPD, and service providers are saying that digital media is not seeing a drop off, and in fact subscriptions are either flat or slightly rising. What many, including the press are failing to miss, is that within certain service providers, revenue per household clearly is falling. Hence layoffs at all the major service providers. I’ve heard this first hand from ex-VPs I’ve run into form service providers like Comcast and Verizon. In cable services particularly, there’s been a drop in revenue realized per household, as consumers cutback on packages and tiers. They may be holding onto the HD tier, but they are cutting back on the number of premium channels, sports bundles, etc. that they used to subscribe to, in order to reduce their monthly spend. It may be as small at cutting $8 per month, but across millions of subscribers, it’s hurting provider bottom lines. It’s not uncommon to see households cutting back to basic cable, especially if one or two spouses have been impacted by job loss.
