Are you kidding me?  Where’s he going to play, a corner?  With his lack of production?  Centerfield?  McLouth is probably not a better centerfielder (though he has won a Gold Glove) but is way more productive.  In fewer games McLouth had more rbi’s, homers and steals.  And the Braves have to throw in lefhander Boone Logan to get the future hall of famer, Melky Cabrera?  You mean Darryl Strawberry wasn’t available?

You mean to tell me Ryan Church wasn’t a better option?  Does Cashman have naked photos of Frank Wren?  I can’t throw enough insults in the direction of the Braves over this one.

When did George Costanza start working for the Braves?  He should tell Wren that the jerk store called, they’re running out of you.  And if that doesn’t work he should just say he slept with his wife.  Seeing as how she is not in a coma, that may just work.

Jason Bay

The Mets, Angels, and Mariners are the front-runners for Jason Bay right now, but Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Yankees have contacted Bay’s representatives. The Yankees currently have Melky Cabrera, Curtis Granderson, Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher, and Rule V Pick Jamie Hoffman on their 40-man roster.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees make a surprise move and get Jason Bay. Acquiring Jason Bay would probably require the Yankees moving Melky Cabrera, but the Yankees have their DH spot open after Hideki Matsui agreeing to a contract with the Angels. With Mike Cameron going to the Red Sox, it seems more likely that the Yankees will try to re-sign Johnny Damon rather than signing Bay since Damon is a better fit defensively and in the #2 spot in their lineup. I certainly hope the Yankees don’t surprise their cross-town rivals by signing Bay with their limitless amount of money and only leaving Minaya and the Mets with trade options for a power bat in LF (or outbidding the Cardinals for Matt Holliday.)

Sergio García encabeza la caza del líder en el Dubai Wold Championship. El español ha puesto el turbo y ha embocado birdies en el 2, 5, 6 y 7. Este último ha estado a punto de convertirse en eagle, al igual que el hoyo 8 en birdie, pero se ha quedado corto por muy poco. El esapañol ha desenfundado el put como nunca en un intento desesperado de alcanzar la primera posición.

Pero el hoyo nueve a frenado su ascenso a la cima. El de Castellón ha cometido su primer error de hoy al final de la primera vuelta, un segundo golpe al rough y un difícil tiro a bandera se han convertido finalmente en un doble bogey. •     Creación en Briviesca de la primera estación de cetrería de España.   Se especializó en el estudio de las aves, de ahí su interés por la cetrería. Ésta se basa en la protección de las especies ibéricas de aves rapaces y sus ecosistemas.

1964

• Es pionaero en la lucha de los predadores.   Intenta y consigue que el alcón peregrino deje de ser considerado una especie dañina a especie protegida en todo el ámbito nacional.
• Interviene en la creación del Parque Cinegético de Hosquillo (Cuenca).  Éste se creó básicamente con la función de actuar como granja cinegética para repoblar acotados de caza de diversas especies.

1966

• Participa en  Operación Cernícalo.   Éste fue un proyecto de reintroducción en Francia de cernícalos Españoles, en colaboración con ornitólogos franceses y la Liga Francesa Para la Protección de las Aves.

1968

• Participa en la Operación Bahari.   Se trataba de adiestrar halcones peregrinos, así creó un sistema de control biológico en la Base Aerea de Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) para evitar la eliminación indiscriminada y a gran escala de las aves de paso y sedentarias que eran peligrosas para el tráfico aereo.

1969

• Cría una manada de lobos para estudiar la jerarquía social de las hembras y machos del lobo en cautividad.
• Inicia una campaña de sensibilización y denuncia ciudadana contra la contaminación en la revista “La Actualidad Española”.

1971

• Adquiere los últimos 12 ejemplares de gacelas de Mohor del mundo.   Esto lo hace con la intención de introducirlas en la Estación Experimental de Zonas Aridas de Almeria y asó poder después reintroducirlas en el Sahara.
• Intenta  salvar la Albufera de Valencia y las Dunas del Saler pero apenas lo consigue.

1972

• Colabora en la creación de la reserva biológica de Hato del Frio (Venezuela).   Se trata de una finca ganadera que combina la ganadería tradicional con la investigación y el turismo ecológico.

1973

•         Pone en marcha una campaña en contra de la desecación de Las Tablas de Daimiel en Ciudad Real y Doñana en Huelva. Con esto además quería declaralos Parques Nacionales.   Las Tablas de Damiel es un Parque Nacional caracterísitico dada su formación en la confluencia de los ríos Guadiana y Cigüela, esto provoca un ecosistema singular dando lugar a una gran diversidad ecológica.  El Paqrque Nacional de Doñana se caracteriza sobre todo por sus marismas, en el parque viven especies únicas y muchas de ellas en peligro de extinción como el águila imperial ibérica y el lince ibérico.
•          Frena un proyecto de urbanización de litoral del Parque Nacional de Doñana y se opone a la desecación de la Reserva de la Biosfera.    Todo ello es debido al crecimiento de la urbanización Matalascañas y a la extensión de los regadios que contaminan todo el area, entre otras cosas con pesticidas.

1975

•         Junto con ADENA-WWF cre el refugio de rapaces en Montejo de la Vega (Segovia) y el primer campamento de formación medioambiental para jóvenes.   Este refugio constituye uno de los proyectos de conservación más emblemáticos de WWF y también uno de los de mayor duración.

1976

•         Funda la Comisión para la conservación de la isla de Cabrera (CCC) de la que fue director.   Impulsó la conservación del archipiélago Balear en el Parque Marítimo Terrestre creado en Abril 1991.

1977

•         Junto con el Dr. Ramón Grande del Brio (escritor más prolífico del conservacionismo español) ayudó en la coordinadora para la defensa y el estudio del lobo ibérico.
•         Colabora en la campaña organizada por la CBI (Confederación Ballenera Internacional) y ADENA para la salvaguarda de los cetáceos.

1978

•         Tiene lugar la Operación Halcón, basada en una campaña para la instalación de nidos artificiales para aves rapaces y protección y defensa de los expoliadores de nidos de halcón.   Pronto nacerán los primeros pollos de halcón nacidos en España en sus halconeras fruto de la reproducción en cautividad. Gracias a esto fue también precursor de la reproducción en cautividad del halcón peregrino, labor que continua su viuda en la actualidad.
•         Crea el Comité de Conservación de Osos Panda.

1980

•         Presentación ante el rey y el gobierno en pleno de La 1º estrategia Mundial Para la Conservación de los Recursos Vivos y un Desarrollo Sostenido.
     

L’Esquirol, o Santa Maria del Corcó, és una vila molt bonica, en un lloc molt bonic, a dues passes d’indrets maravellosos, fantàstics i insospitats. Es troba a uns 80 kms. de Barcelona per l’autovia que porta a Vic. Superada aquesta població, ja camí de Ripoll, cal prendre l’eix transversal C-25 en direcció a Girona. Entrareu en la comarca màgica del Collsacabra, de la que Santa Maria del Corcó n’és la porta natural. Des de l’Esquirol es pot arribar molt fàcilment a paratges que us corprendran. Com ara la riera de les Gorgues, que travessa tot el terme. En certs llocs forma gorges espectaculars amb salts d’aigua i molins. Ens agrada per la facilitat en arribar-hi caminant des del poblet de Cantonigròs, a uns 6 kms. de l’Esquirol, l’indret anomenat la Foradada. També és molt bonic el lloc dit la Barra de Ferro a l’Esquirol mateix. El dia del Mercat de la Terra hi haurà una ruta guiada per aquest rierol tan sorprenent. Un xic més endavant, però abans d’arribar a Rupit, trobareu la serra de Cabrera, amb la seva especial formació geològica de turons i plans enlairats. Una pista en bon estat, ben senyalitzada, us portarà al peu de l’ermita de Santa Maria de Cabrera, travessant una fageda de conte de fades. També són notables l’església romànica de Sant Martí Sescorts, del segle XI o la de Sant Julià de Cabrera. Teniu un dolmen, anomenat de Puig-sespedres, força gran per la mitjana del nostre país, de molt fàcil accés a la sortida de l’Esquirol pel camí ral. No deixeu de visitar, si el temps us ho permet, els pobles de Tavertet, 12 kms. al sur, enlairat a abocat al precipici més violent de Catalunya, damunt el pantà de Sau. No apte per cardíacs. També us recomanem molt vivament fer una volta pel poblet medieval de Rupit, a uns 15 kms. en direcció Olot. Un poblet de pessebre, unigualable, amb el seu pont, la riera, el salt de Sallent… no tenim paraules!. Si decidiu pujar-hi per la segona quinzena de novembre ho podeu fer coincidir amb el Mercat de la Terra. Durant tot el diumenge hi ha un mercat de productes naturals. Embotits, formatges, mel, vins, verdures, xocolates, cervessa… tot el que aquesta comarca excepcional pot oferir. Paral·lelament tindran lloc una sèrie d’activitats molt interessants, com ara la mencionada visita guiada a la riera de les Gorgues. Els més petits podran escoltar contes, gaudir dels inflables, veure una actuació castellera i jugar a molts jocs. Pugeu a l’Esquirol i els pobles i viles que l’acompanyen, allà al Collsacabra. Visiteu i gaudiu del Mercat de la Terra. Per dinar us recomanem, en plan menú i preu ajustat Cal Carreter, especialitat en carns a la brasa. Està a cantonigròs, a peu de carretera. Tel. 938525003. Si podeu pagar un restaurant de campanetes, amb cuina molt més sofisticada, llavors el vostre lloc és Ca l’Ignasi, on fan uns plats cuidats que segueixen la temporada i els seus productes. Està també a Cantonigròs, al carrer Major, 4. Tel. 938525124. Si heu arribat fins Rupit, nosaltres hem dinat, i dormit, a l’hostal l’Estrella. Molt cassolà i agradable. També està molt i molt bé, per dormir i per menjar, el novíssim hostal de muntanya Cabrerès, al carrer Major de Cantonigròs, un xic més avall de Ca l’Ignasi. Habitacions senzilles i cuques, i apartaments. A Rupit hi ha un càmping, i en tota la zona moltes, moltíssimes cases rurals. Teniu un alberg de colònies a Cantonigròs: Santa Maria del Roure, i un allotjament de muntanya al Santuari de Collsacabra, molt rural, això si!.

L’Esquirol, o Santa Maria del Corcó, es una villa muy bonita, en un lugar muy bonito, a dos pasos de lugares maravillosos, fantásticos e insospechados. También es muy bonito la Barra de Ferro  en l’Esquirol mismo. El día del Mercado de la Tierra habrá una ruta guiada por este arroyo tan sorprendente. Un poco más adelante, pero antes de llegar a Rupit, encontrareis la sierra de Cabrera, con su especial formación geológica de colinas y planos elevados. Una pista en buen estado, bien señalizada, os llevará al pie de la ermita de Santa María de Cabrera, atravesando un hayedo de cuento de hadas. También son notables la iglesia románica de Sant Martí Sescorts, del siglo XI o la de Sant Julià de Cabrera. Tienen también un dolmen, llamado de Puig-sespedres, bastante grande para la media de nuestro país, de muy fácil acceso a la salida de l’Esquirol por el camino real. No dejéis de visitar, si el tiempo os lo permite, los pueblos de Tavertet, 12 kms. al sur, colgado sobre el precipicio más violento de Cataluña, literalmente volando sobre el pantano de Sau. No apto para cardíacos. También le recomendamos muy vivamente dar una vuelta por el pueblo medieval de Rupit, a unos 15 kms. en dirección Olot. Un pueblecito de pesebre, unigualable, con su puente, el arroyo, el salto de Sallent … ¡no tenemos palabras!. Si deciden subir la segunda quincena de noviembre pueden hacer coincidir su visita con el Mercado de la Tierra. Durante todo el domingo hay un mercado de productos naturales. Embutidos, quesos, miel, vinos, verduras, chocolates, cerveza … todo lo que esta comarca excepcional puede ofrecer. Paralelamente tendrán lugar una serie de actividades muy interesantes, como la mencionada visita guiada a la riera de les Gorgues. Los más pequeños podrán escuchar cuentos, disfrutar de los hinchables, ver una actuación castellera y jugar a muchos juegos. Suban a l’Esquirol y los pueblos y villas que lo acompañan, allá en el Collsacabra. Visiten y disfruten del Mercado de la Tierra. Para comer les recomendamos, en plan menú y a precio ajustado Cal Carreter, especialidad en carnes a la brasa. Está en Cantonigròs, a pie de carretera. Tel. 938525003. Si puede pagar un restaurante de campanillas, con cocina mucho más sofisticada, entonces su sitio es Ca l’Ignasi, donde hacen unos platos cuidados que siguen la temporada y sus productos. También está muy muy bien, para dormir y para comer, el novísimo hotel de montaña Cabrerès, en la calle Mayor de Cantonigròs, un poco más abajo de Ca l’Ignasi. Habitaciones sencillas y cucas, y apartamentos. En Rupit hay un camping, y en toda la zona muchas, muchísimas casas rurales. Tienen un albergue de colonias en Cantonigròs: Santa Maria del Roure, y un alojamiento de montaña en el Santuario de Collsacabra, muy rural, ¡eso sí!.

There is no reason to believe that eco-friendly or community sensitive hotels and resorts need to be lackluster or somehow less than the luxury developments found on resort beaches everywhere. Muy buenas, hoy vengo con la historia de los primeros pobladores que pisaron nuestra tierra, que sin dudua alguna fueron los iberos, o al menos la civilización más antigua asentada en Torrent de la que tenemos constancia, aun así, no hay casi nada de información respecto al tema, quizá por que no hubieron herencias manuscritas ni nada, simplemente por los restos arquelógicos encontrados.

Los indicios de los primeros pobladores  de Torrent,  data de la edad de Bronce, periodo en que se desarrolla precisamente la metalurgia de este metal, el bronce, hace ahora 2.500 años, y fue en este periodo cuando vinieron los primeros pobladores de Torrent.

Los iberos, que así se llamó el pueblo de aquel periodo, se situaron sobretodo en toda la costa levantina y sur de la península.

En 1931, una construcción de un chalet en la zona de la Muntanyeta de Cabrera en (El Vedat), desveló los restos iberos que hoy en día se conservan en el Museo de Prehistoria de Valencia, vasijas, puntas de flecha,  vasos,  incluso un cráneo, encontrado dentro de una pequeña cueva.

Por tanto, el hallazgo en dicha zona hace a los iberos sus primero pobladores, o al menos la civilización más antigua de la que tenemos constancia hasta ahora en nuestro municipio. Las casas iberas que había en Torrent, eran de una sola habitación, de 6 metros cuadrados, que estaban normalmente adosadas a la pared de roca natural, además que era una sociedad muy cerrada al exterior, y esto imposibilitaba las tareas de intercambio y comercio con otros pueblos.

Por desgracia hoy en día no hay mucha documentación e información sobre estos primeros pobladores de Torrent, (que no los fundadores). Y seguro que si seguimos buscando y excavando, no será lo último que hayamos encontrado.

Good God, he’s back again. Is there nowhere that does not provide a photo opportunity for Enviro Man? The latest jaunt? There amidst some scrubland in the S’Albufereta, along with the mayors of Alcúdia and Pollensa. Environment minister Grimalt sharing the camera lens with his mayoral compatriots in the Unió Mallorquina, all in the name of environmental recuperation. 

Albufereta, in case you don’t know, is the little Albufera to be found to the side of the coastal road between Alcúdia and Puerto Pollensa. Basically, it’s much the same as the Albufera of Playa de Muro except much smaller, without a reception centre and without anything remotely worth looking at. It is an area that has, apparently, been classified as a recuperation priority by the European Union. Over a hundred thousand euros have been earmarked for the first phase – that of getting rid of rubbish that has accumulated and re-establishing the water land area known as Can Cullerassa which takes its name, or is it the other way round, from the stretch of beach and which also lends its name to the restaurant, albeit that this is called Can Cuarassa – not sure how that works, but apparently it is so.

It was reassuring that the photo opp in the “Diario” did not show Enviro Man and his fellow camera fodder wearing masks. Back in March, it was revealed that there was a bit of a problem with E.coli in the water of Albufereta, something which led to a sign being covered with the word “contaminado”, which one assumed was not an official addition to the sign. 

In a quite different matter environmental, Enviro Man’s ministry, according to “The Bulletin”, is coming in for a bit of a bashing from the local Chamber of Commerce for refusing to grant permission for the island of Cabrera to be used as a location for a film with Al Pacino about Napoleon. This is in fact the long-awaited adaptation of the children’s book by Staton Rabin, “Betsy And The Emperor”, which will also feature Emma Watson, as Betsy. I say “long-awaited” only because the film has been talked about for at least four years.

Cabrera is the largest of the small archipelago off the southern coast of Mallorca, all of which is deemed to be a nature reserve, one to which there is little by way of excursion. The regular population of Cabrera is under 100, and the ecosystem is considered that fragile that diving is forbidden. But the argument goes that filming there would not have any harmful effect, which may possibly be true, while production teams are generally pretty assiduous when it comes to tidying up after themselves and are also not unknown for being quite generous in terms of paying for locations, a possible additional source of revenue, therefore, for promoting the island, one might have thought. Moreover, goes the argument, using Cabrera would be beneficial in showing off some excellent landscape and thus attracting further tourism. Which may also be true, but not for Cabrera as such, while cinema-goers would probably need to know that Napoleon was on an island off Mallorca and not on an island in the Atlantic, as the film will be about his exile in St. Helena. 

Maybe though the objection has to do with the fact that Enviro Man would not himself appear; for newspaper photographers read also film camera crews. But it might be possible for him to get a walk-on as an extra or something, planting a sign to the effect of “this scene sponsored by the Balearic Government’s environment ministry on the island of Cabrera near to Mallorca”. That might do the trick, so long as no-one comes along and adds “contaminado” to the sign.

” Siendo de Wentworth me habría hecho ilusión ganar mi primer Volvo Mundial Match Play allí, pero como dije, los tiempos cambian a mejor. Estoy en la luna, absolutamente encantado, ha sido una semana larga y agotadora, pero evidentemente ha merecido la pena. Me podían haber eliminado el viernes pero por suerte Westy (Westwood) y Camilo empataron y yo pasé. Siempre es difícil jugar contra el Campeón del Masters. En el primer hoyo extra con Cabrera pensé que iba a meter el putt, pero ganarle en el hoyo 39 fue de gran ayuda para enfrentarme hoy a Anthony Kim, que es tremendamente competitivo, nunca tira la toalla, probablemente uno de los más valientes. Creo que la mejor parte de mi juego ha sido la fuerza mental” ha comentado el jugador tras alzarse con el preciado trofeo azul.

El golfista supo desplegar desde el primer momento la combinación perfecta de talento, buen juego y estrategia mental necesario para ganar en esta modalidad. El americano no ha podido adelantarlo en ningún momento de la competición y dos fallos cruciales- un bogey en el hoyo 28 y otro definitivo en el 32- en los segundos dieciocho hoyos  junto con el excepcional eagle de Fisher en el 22 sirvieron para determinar su sentencia. Y es que en este partido la lucha de golpes ha sido una constante durante todo el día. En los gestos y las decisiones de los jugadores se notaba la tensión presente en cada golpe. Kim muy fuerte en el juego largo se veía contrarrestado por el excelente repertorio de golpes cortos que ha desplegado hoy el británico sin posibilidad de réplica.

El joven de 28 años culmina así una temporada excepcional, situándose cuarto en la Carrera a Dubai. Fisher es el noveno debutante en alzarse con el título. Se apunta así su tercer título en el Circuito Europeo tras el KLM Open de 2007 y el Abierto de Europa de 2008. Este año ya había realizado cuatro Top Ten, un quinto puesto en el US Open, segundo en el BMW PGA, y el cuarto en el Match Play de WGC- Accenture.

En la final de consolación que decidía el tercer y cuarto puesto Allenby se ha impuesto a Ángel Cabrera en un partido que ha necesitado un hoy extra para decidirse. El jugador argentino comenzó con birdies en los 3, 5 y 6 pero Allenby lo contrarresto con el golpe del torneo, embocando desde 210 metros para hacer hoyo en uno. El enfrentamiento siguió vivo hasta el último hoyo donde Allenby hizo birdie para entrar en el play off donde se deshizo del ganador del Master con un segundo golpe definitivo poniéndose por primera vez delante de su rival y adjudicándose así la tercera plaza.

Mañana la mayoría de los jugadores marchan hacía China donde se disputa el próximo torneo puntuable para la Carrera a Dubai.

Ross Fisher en su último tiro del hoyo 18

El inglés Ross Fisher se verá hoy en la final con el norteamericano Anthony Kim. Ambos consiguieron su pase en la final de la Volvo Mundial Match Play tras unas de las más apasionantes jornadas disputadas en los 45 años que atesora este torneo.

Fisher ganó en un enfrentamiento épico y tras 39 agónicos hoyos a un Ángel Cabrera agotado. Cabrera hizo lo más difícil, remontar un resultado adverso en los últimos 36 hoyos. Logró empatar en el último golpe, tras un magistral segundo golpe dejando la bola prácticamente dentro.

El inglés y el argentino comenzarón con un intercambio de fallos en los dos primeros hoyos, rompiendo nuevamente la igualdad que demostraron en el campo en el hoyo 5 donde un doble bogey de Fisher colocó al ganador del Master de Augusta tres arriba. Una progresión que frenó el británico en el 14 y el 18, junto con un fallo de Cabrera en el 15 que igualaba la primera vuelta.

Un intercambio de birdies continuo en la segundos dieciocho dejaba a Cabrera dormie - sin posibilidad de victoria sin desempate- a un hoyo del final, pero obró el milagro con un magistral golpe. Ambos jugadores volvieron al tee del 18 tres veces seguidas para ponerle nombre al segundo finalista del Mundial Match. Cabrera tras desperdiciar una magnífica primera oportunidad para llegar al domingo mandó su bola al bunker de green mientras Fisher se dejaba una clara opción de birdie para finalizar el final más emocionante de la historia de Finca Cortesín.

“Significa mucho para mí haber ganado a Cabrera, ya dije ayer que no iba a ser fácil, es el campeón del Masters y así ha sido, muy complicado. Esta mañana le he regalado unos cuantos hoyos, hubo un momento que le dije a mi caddie, voy a tratar de jugar lo mejor posible, pero sobre todo a no cometer errores tontos. Estoy contentísimo con haber pasado a la final. En el 18 de la segunda vuelta, la bola estuvo a punto de entrar. Mañana será un partido difícil contra Kim, voy a tratar de darle a los europeos, que tanto me han apoyado durante toda la semana, algo que celebrar, espero conseguirlo”, comentaba orgulloso tras acabar la jornada.

Anthony Kim se consolida así como favorito para llevarse el torneo. El estadounidense se deshizo de Allenby a cinco hoyos del final. En unos 18 primeros hoyos muy igualados el austriaco parecía hacerle frente pero el por la tarde, en el séptimo hoyo claudicó y cometió un doble bogey para ponerle en bandeja la victoria a Kim, que sup0 rematar en el hoyo 8 con un birdie. Un resultado abultado para un encuentro muy reñido.

“Robert y yo hemos jugado muy bien, pero en los segundos 18 la situación se ha vuelto a mi favor. Me siento muy afortunado, mis padres han estado viéndolo en televisión todo el día. Estoy contentísimo de llegar a la final”, ha declarado Kim.

El americano disputará la final con una pequeña herida en la mano que le impide realizar el golpeo con la máxima potencia posible.

Contra todo pronóstico el jugador español Sergio García se despide de la Volvo Mundial Match Play. El mal juego desplegado por el español durante la primera jornada unido al difícil juego de Olivier Wilson y Allenby le dejaron fuera de las opciones al título a las primeras de cambio.

El de Borriol no pudo controlar el vuelo de la bola y no remató en las distancias cortas con el putt, sobre todo por la tarde, en un campo donde la distancia es un elemento castigador añadido. Con fallos de tee a green el español nos deja sin representación en Finca Cortesín. García sólo consiguió un punto de los cuatro posibles. Y es que desde primera hora de la mañana el jugador no mostraba la confianza necesaria para arrebatarle hoyos a sus contrincantes concediéndoles oportunidades que este formato de juego no perdona.

“Es una lástima pero se acabó el torneo, pase lo que pase mañana no puedo llegar a semifinales ya que sólo clasifica el primero de cada grupo. No he jugado bien. Oliver Wilson me ha dado muchas oportunidades pero yo le he dado más. En Match Play no puedes despistarte ni un momento. La semana que viene jugamos otro torneo y quiero coger confianza. Estoy decepcionado. Venía a intentar meterme en el fin de semana y pelear por el torneo”, ha declarado el jugador está mañana.

En su grupo Allenby y Olivier Wilson se juegan su pase a las semifinales en estos momentos.  En el resto de los grupo Anthony Kim, Ángel Cabrera y Milkha Sing se ponen a la cabeza del torneo. Este último protagonizó la victoria más abultada del día ganando por seis hoyos a Lee Westwood. Mientras, Cabrera hundió al joven McIllroy con cinco hoyos de diferencia.  

A falta de un partido el numeroso público asistente ya clama por su favorito: Anthony Kim.  El americano desplegó su mejor juego demostrando que es el mejor jugador de Match Play en Finca Cortesín. De hecho es el único que tiene asegurado su puesto en la jornada del sábado. ” He hecho unos cuantos bierdies, no sé cuántos pero ha sido un día divertido. Hacía tiempo que no lo pasaba tan bien jugando al golf”, ha confesado Kim al terminar la jornada.

Pero en un torneo como este cualquier resultado es imprevisible y ningún jugador tiene ventaja hasta la última jornada.  Más aún cuando el campo de Finca Cortesín y el intenso viento juegan un papel fundamental.  Por ahora, quedan tres días del más intenso y emocionante golf mundial.

1.       Federico Nieto: Los hinchas de Huracán no lo pueden creer, pero el actual delantero del puntero del campeonato, Colon de Santa Fe, está de racha. Con sus dos goles del domingo pasado frente a San Lorenzo, Nieto  llegó a los seis goles en el torneo. El equipo de Mohamed es puntero y el miércoles con Nieto a la cabeza, buscará arruinarle la apertura del estadio a Independiente. Mención especial para los uruguayos Silva y Boghossian que también convirtieron por dos.

2.       Ángel Cabrera: En el Grand Slam de la temporada que reúne a los ganadores de los torneos Major, el Pato finalizó segundo a cinco golpes de Lucas Glover. Cabrera, está cerrando una gran temporada donde fue el ganador del Masters de Augusta.

3.       Ellerstina: En el partido perfecto, el actual campeón del Abierto de Palermo, le demostró a La Dolfina que hoy es el mejor. Ahora buscará el título el próximo fin de semana ante La Aguada.

4.       Eduardo Schwank: Luego de una temporada muy complicada, el rosarino pudo festejar en Santiago de Chile. Volvió al nivel del último año y venció en el Challenger de esa ciudad al local Nicolas Massú.

5.       Javier Zanetti: Con 36 años, Il Capitano, como lo llaman los hinchas del Inter sigue vigente. En la victoria de su equipo el último fin de semana frente a Catania, Pupi jugó su partido 139 de forma consecutiva.  Junto al histórico Giacinto Facchetti se convirtió en el segundo jugador que vistió más veces la camiseta del Nerazzurri, con 476. Lo menos que podíamos hacer era reconocer a este gran defensor argentino.

Tarek’s bright-hazel eyes track Officer Lazaro Cabrera for the slightest hand signal or voice command that is spoken in Flemish.

A key aspect of training the 5-year-old German shepherd is to always pay attention to his handler, Cabrera, who is also his law-enforcement partner. Tarek was born and raised in Europe and became a part of Cabrera’s family when he was 2 years old. The 65-pound K-9 was named when Cabrera got him; Tarek means “morning star.”

Cabrera has been a Lady Lake police officer for almost four years, and Tarek is his second K-9 partner.

“He’s an energetic partner with a tremendous will to please,” Cabrera said. “He has so many great characteristics you look for; he’s a social dog and has extraordinary drive.”

The pair’s working relationship showcased its success when Cabrera and Tarek brought home the national championship for the second year in a row from The United States Police Canine Association’s national trials that were held this month in West Des Moines, Iowa.

The K-9 team earned 690.83 points out of 700, which is a record-breaking high score. Tarek competed against about 100 other dogs. Tarek and Cabrera competed in obedience, agility, criminal apprehension and suspect search.

“When I came into the Lady Lake program, most of my colleagues did not have much confidence in the K-9 program; and now not only did I make it a famous K-9 program, but it’s known at a national level,” Cabrera said. “That achievement is not only because of dedication and hard work, but the overwhelming support from the chief and lieutenants.”

After work, Tarek goes home with Cabrera to relax. Tarek is like any other dog at home: He sleeps, eats and plays. Sometimes, both officer and canine can be found at home on the couch watching television. Tarek is a member of the Cabrera family; in fact, Cabrera describes Tarek as his child. But even off duty the K-9 team practices and trains for day-to-day police work and for competitions.

The wins provide the department with exposure of its strong K-9 team. Other law enforcement agencies are taking note of the Lady Lake Police Department’s accomplishments, Chief Ed Nathanson said.

Tarek is an extremely intelligent dog. He is a working dog, and his main job is to track suspects of crimes, Nathanson said. The K-9 team is very successful at this, he said. The K-9 team also makes its presence known in the community through demonstrations and presentations at schools.

“Laz’s heart and soul is in this program, this is what motivates him,” Nathanson said. “Laz might be a soft-spoken man, but he is a passionate law enforcement canine handler. I am proud and honored to say he’s a member of our agency, and we look forward to partnership with him for years to come.”

Lady Lake Town Commissioner Ruth Kussard said she is impressed with the K-9 team’s achievements. Lady Lake should feel proud to have such an award-winning K-9 team because it gives the community nationwide exposure, she said.

Kussard said she always looks forward to hearing about the department’s achievements because she knows its employees are dedicated workers who deserve the recognition.

Lady Lake’s K-9 team is used for several law enforcement needs such as traffic stops and searches. For example, officers request the K-9 team at a traffic stop if a search is to be performed, Cabrera said. If Tarek finds something, he is trained to immediately sit right next to the narcotics or other contraband.

The United States Police Canine Association’s regional finals will be held in Lady Lake March 15-19, which means the area’s best K-9 teams will be competing here, Cabrera said.

The revenue generated from the competition will help enhance the department’s one-acre training facility, Nathanson said. Some of the equipment is wood, and the money would help purchase aluminum equipment.

The police department encourages residents to make donations or offer volunteer time, Cabrera said. People interested in helping the department host the competition should call 751-1560.

“The public needs to be educated on how hard it is to accomplish winning first place at nationals two years in a row,” Cabrera said. “Some people think it’s just normal or just what happens, but it’s not. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to win the award.”

It is finally here: Phillies-Yankees. We will get to the matchups in a few moments, but first item on the list is George Steinbrenner pimping out the opening act. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys are performing “Empire State of Mind” and LeBron is throwing out the first pitch. Ok, the second one was a joke but the first one is serious, and in case you were wondering, Elton John will not be performing “Philadelphia Freedom” before Game 3. I personally find it pretty comical that Steinbrenner is basically holding a concert before the game. I can appreciate giving fans value for their money (which is a lot for Yankee Stadium), but doesn’t the idea of a performance before the World Series just seem comical. Maybe it’s just me. If so, let me know. Alright, let’s get to the matchups and we will keep score.

Catcher: Jorge Posada/José Molina vs. Carlos Ruiz

Posada is clearly the best of the three and under normal circumstances, but Ruiz has had himself a very nice postseason going 5-13 with 4 RBI in the NLCS while Posada was just 4-20. Whether or not this will carry over is anyone’s guess, but it definitely narrows the gap. Yankees 1, Phillies 0; but by the slimmest of margins.

First Base: Mark Teixeira vs. Ryan Howard

This is a marquee matchup even though the two really do not face each other head to head. Teixeira has the edge defensively over Howard despite Howard’s recent efforts to improve, but it is pretty even at the plate with both being outstanding players. Howard is easily the hotter player, but Tex found his groove toward the end of the Angels series, especially against Darren Oliver in Game 5. We will call this one a tie: Yankees 2, Phillies 1.

Second Base: Robinson Cano vs. Chase Utley

The advantage clearly goes to Utley here. Not only is he outstanding defensively and can do it all at the plate, he is one of the best baserunners in the game. Just watch him run the bases; it can change a game. For that matter, almost all the Phillies are good baserunners and they can certainly thank that, in part, for their success. Utley is the better player all around. Yankees 2, Phillies 2.

Shortstop: Derek Jeter vs. Jimmy Rollins

Defensively, no matter what anyone says, I have to give the edge to Rollins. Jeter makes great plays on the balls he gets to, but he gets to less balls overall. That means that the roller up the middle that Jeter just barely misses making a play on is a ball J-Roll gets to. However, at the plate Jeter has been red hot and his leadership skills have to be taken into account. Jeter wins. Yankees 3, Phillies 2.

Third Base: Alex Rodriguez vs. Pedro Feliz

This one is pretty close. Ok, not really, A-Rod is the hottest player on the planet and Pedro Feliz is Pedro Feliz. A-Rod is better in every aspect of the game. Yankees 4, Phillies 2.

Outfield+DH: Damon, Matsui, Cabrera, Swisher vs. Ibanez, Victorino, and Werth

I can honestly say that the Phillies have the edge at every position. The Phillies have a phenomenal core of outfielders frankly. Ibanez has picked back up after his September slump; Victorino and Werth are hotter than firecrackers. Damon has been hot too, but he is a liability at times with his arm. Swisher showed no signs of life against the Angels and although Melky has been hot, he is not as good as Victorino. This one is 3-0 Phillies. Yankees 4, Phillies 5.

Starting Pitching: Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, 4th Starter vs. Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Martinez, Happ, Anyone Else

After Cliff Lee, this is a win for the Yankees. Sabathia might even be able to beat Lee on the right night which would really hinder the Phillies chances. In order for them to win this series, they need to win Game 1. If Lee goes down, the morale will too and with Hamels in his current state, the Phils will be in trouble. If Hamels steps up and looks like 2008 Cole Hamels, the Phillies might even be the favorite to win it all. However, Hamels has shown no reason to have much confidence in him and Pettite has a much bigger advantage over a Phillies lineup who has not seen him than Joe Blanton (a former Athletics player) has against a Yankees lineup, almost all of which have experience against him. Not to mention, Pettite is a beast in the postseason. We will call Lee-Sabathia a tie, and the anonymous 4th starters a tie, but Pettite and Burnett have clear advantages. Yankees 8, Phillies 7. By the way, how envious are Indians fans (such as myself) at the fact that two of their former starters are starting Game 1 and facing each other. Too bad neither plays for the Indians.

Bullpen minus Closer: Hughes, Coke, Chamberlain, Marte, Aceves, Robertson vs. Durbin, Madson, Park, Eyre

Going into the playoffs, this would have been a clear Yankees victory, but they were really shaky against the Angels and Girardi seemed to lack a little bit of trust in them, especially when he left Burnett in for the start of the 7th. On the other hand, the Phillies pen has been outstanding and really did a job on the Dodgers. I am going to give out only 1 point for this category since it does not even include the closer but right now the bullpen matchup favors the Phillies. Tied 8-8. I promise I didn’t plan that.

Closer: Mariano Rivera vs. Brad Lidge

Lidge has been perfect this postseason, but it just doesn’t matter. Mariano Rivera is the best closer in baseball history (sorry Trevor) because of what he does in the postseason. The Braves of the 1990s felt that if they had Rivera instead of the Yankees, they would be the ones with 4 rings in the 90s. Keep in mind, Rivera only deals with 1 innings, with 4 to 5 outs max and the Braves feel he could have put them so over the top that they would have won 3 more rings. Lidge has been outstanding, but Mariano Rivera is simply the best. Yankees 9, Phillies 8.

Intangibles: Ballpark, NL-AL and Overall Impact

The Yankees are lucky they have a lefty going in Game 1 because it will be harder for the Phillies switch hitters to pull the ball out of the ballpark from the left side, and Ryan Howard will have less chance of killing them. We all know that the 2 stadiums are bandboxes, but I think there is a minimal advantage for the Phillies getting their lefties in the new Yankee Stadium. The Phillies also have a slight advantage in being structured like an AL team. When they go to an AL park, they are more than fine fielding a DH, but when the Yankees go to a NL park, they lose a significant contributor. If Burnett pitches in Philly, it is even more pronounced since Molina replaces Posada as well. Both of these advantages are minimal though, so we will give them 1 total point for both. That ties it up 9-9.

It is the Yankees year. God, I hate seeing that in writing but even this Yankee hating Indians fan has to admit it. The Yankees are a team of destiny this year and even the defending Champions cannot deny their swag. Name almost any other sport and a defending champ returning to the championship and they would be huge favorites, but the Yankees are favored to win. The Phillies have an experience advantage since they are the reigning champs, but the veteran core of the Yankees can make up for that. It just comes down to feel. There is something about this Yankees team where you feel like they are going to win every game no matter how improbable. They have the swag, and the swing, and in a few weeks time, they will have the rings to match. Yankees 10-9.

Just because it is so close does not mean it will go seven however. If the Phillies drop Game 1, it could be over in 4 or 5, but if the Phillies are clutch it could very well go 7, and with a little luck they could come out on top, but it will not quite happen. The Yankees are your 2009 World Series Champions.

Easy, big fella!

Alright Yankees, time for that playoff choking reflex to kick in…NOW! CC Sabathia pitched a gem on three days’ rest and Alex Rodriguez continued his improbable playoff tear to lead New York to a 10-1 win tonight, grabbing a commanding 3-1 series lead in the process.

A huge clunker for the Angels in this one, especially coming off an emotional come-from-behind win in extras Tuesday. Starter Scott “No Command” Kazmir was his wild self, walking four and giving up four runs in just four innings. Rodriguez and Melky Cabrera had three hits apiece for the Yankees, who tacked on five runs in the last two innings to make it pretty, pretty embarrassing.

Of course, we’ve seen New York blow bigger ALCS leads than 3-1 — if you need a refresher, pop in the terrific romance-comedy “Fever Pitch” and relive the magic of the Yankees’ 2004 collapse, all the while enjoying the acting stylings of screen legends Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore.

Any shot the Angels have at making a comeback starts Thursday, when Allan James Burnett (12-9, 4.04) and John Lackey (11-8, 3.83) square off in Game 5.

Jag kan presentera mig lite snabbt som en av Jespers bästa vänner. Well, another losing season; their third in a row. The A’s spent 161 days in last place. I started out this season with high hopes. Having Nomar Garciaparra, Matt Holliday, Orlando Cabrera, Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby, Mark Ellis and Jason Giambi seemed like a great backbone for a winning team. But trades and injuries sure took its toll. Could it be because of replacing Ken Macha with Bob Geren? Since that happened the best the A’s have placed is third… out of four! I’m not so sure about our odds for next year but lets just say I’ll be going into it with very low expectations, so that I won’t be disappointed…again.

Cuzzi, in perfect position to blow the call

If Major League Baseball has any sense of accountability, they need to tell Phil Cuzzi to take the next few weeks off. Yes Phil, that means no more left field umpiring assignments for the rest of the playoffs — no more making fair or foul calls on plays that happen ten feet away from you.

Seriously, if there has ever been a worse call in the history of baseball, I’d like to see it. It hasn’t been the best of weeks for the men in blue (or black? Why do we call them “blue” when they usually wear black?) — after all, a botched hit-by-a-pitch call Tuesday night gave Minnesota a chance to play in the postseason in the first place and a couple of blown calls at first base by C.B. Bucknor caused a bit of an uproar in Thursday’s Red Sox-Angels opener. Still, Cuzzi’s call stands out as the worst and his reputation for being an idiot come playoff time doesn’t help his case. Too many umpires in the majors think the game is about them. It’s not. If Cuzzi isn’t disciplined, he should pull himself for the rest of the postseason.

Another note on umpiring: If TBS is so set on using this “PitchTRAX”, they need to stop sticking up for the men behind the plate. Either that, or ditch it altogether. The umps are constantly calling pitches strikes that miss the target, yet Chip Caray & co. keep whispering sweet nothings about how great a job they’re doing. Either the umpiring sucks or PitchTRAX is useless. Tell me which, Chip.

Tex wins it

Unbelievable. Major League Baseball goes the extra step to provide left and right field umpires for playoff games, and then one goes and makes the most blatant blown call in the history of the game, in extra innings too. In case you missed it, Phil Cuzzi botched a Joe Mauer double to start the top of the 11th in tonight’s Minnesota-New York game, costing the Twins a run before Mark Texeira ended it in the bottom with a homer. Mauer’s slicing fly ball glanced off Melky Cabrera’s glove and landed at least three feet fair, all with Cuzzi standing about 10 feet away. Nice call, pretty boy.

Anyway, excuses excuses. The Twins still managed to load the bases with none out in the inning before a pair of washouts — Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez — wasted at-bats with first pitch infield outs. David Robertson was then able to get Brendan Harris to fly out and end the inning to set up Texeira’s blast.

Prior to Tex’s heroics, Alex Rodriguez did his part to suggest he’s finally getting the hang of this playoff thing. A-Rod singled home the Yankees’ first run in the sixth and hit a two-run homer off Joe Nathan in the ninth to send the game to extras. New York also had a chance to put it away in the 10th, but Brett Gardner was caught way off third and doubled up on Johnny Damon’s one-out liner to short.

Anyway, a mind-blowing loss for any Yankee hater such as myself. The win gives them a 2-0 series lead heading back to the Metrodome, where Little Andrew Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) and former Yankee legend Carl “Buttocks” Pavano (14-12, 5.10) hook up Sunday.

Carlos Gomez, the life of any party

Wonder why the Twins came out some flat in last night’s ALDS opener? Well, wonder no more. That’s .229-hitting future superstar (and centerpiece of the Johan Santana deal) Carlos Gomez living large after scoring the winning run in Tuesday’s thriller against the Tigers. Then again, this sort of thing is expected. Come out and win the next three and nobody will bat an eye. By the way, did Miguel Cabrera manage to sneak into the celebration?

Meanwhile, today’s slate of games is already underway, with Colorado holding a 5-3 lead in the eighth in Philly and the Cardinals and Dodgers preparing for a 6:07 first pitch. The Red Sox and Angels get their series opener underway at 9:37.

The New Sinatra

Well, so much for the Twins riding that little hot streak to a sweep of the Yankees. C.C. Sabathia strung together a solid outing in his first playoff start as a Yankee and somebody forgot to remind A-Rod it was October, as New York used a pair of his two-out RBI singles to rout Minnesota 7-2 tonight.

The Twins actually grabbed an early 2-0 on a Michael Cuddyer RBI single and a run-scoring passed ball by The Rat (Mr. Posada, if you hadn’t noted the resemblance), but Derek Jeter’s two-run blast in the third tied it up. Nick Swisher’s RBI double, Rodriguez’s two singles and Hideki Matsui’s two-run homer provided the rest of the offense in an otherwise underwhelming opener (if you hate the Yankees, that is). In all, Jeter reached base four times (two hits, two walks), scored three times and drove home a pair, officially supplanting Jay-Z as “The New Sinatra” in the process.

In all, a letdown for Minnesota, but not unexpected given the whirlwind few weeks they’ve been through. Sabathia and a quartet of relievers combined to strike out 12 Twins, including Orlando Cabrera, Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and Brendan Harris twice each. Feared-slugger Nick Punto was the only Minnesota hitter not to go down on strikes.

Also of note, Philly took the opener of their series with Colorado this afternoon, 5-1 behind a Cliff Lee complete game. The Dodgers and Cardinals just got going (NOT the Red Sox and Angels, as I would’ve had you believe earlier this afternoon), so it’s back to work for me…

Thought #1 – Lebron owns the city of Cleveland, and Braylon Edwards, you are no longer welcome there. How fast was the turn around on this? What was it all of 24 hours after getting into it with one of the King’s friends that Edwards is shipped off to the Jets? That’s got to be some kind of a record. I guess its official though, Lebron is the one good thing that city has going for it sports wise and the heck if they are going to let a guy who dropped 39 balls last year mess that up. Now Lebron, what can you do about Mangini?

Thought #2 – The best part of that whole exchange, which I should have guessed it would be, was Rex Ryan’s interview. Rex stressed that Braylon would be able to relax and have a good time as a Jet and that would really help him out on the field. So wait, dude has slide in two years from one of the best receivers to a guy who could barely catch the swine flu if he was trapped in a suana with the Ole Miss football team, is currently under investigation for a bar fight, and your main concern is him relax and having a good time? I think if I was you, my main concern would be getting my hands on some of that gunk Orlando Jones had all over his hands in the Replacements not making sure Braylon knows how to relax, pretty sure he’s been doing a darn good job of that in Cleveland for a while now.

Thought #3 – When all else fails, M.C. Hammer will come and bail you out. This year’s biggest rookie hold out, Michael Crabtree, finally signed with the 49ers this morning thanks to a little help from a guy in some sweet golden parachute pants. Maybe he was finally able to make it clear to Crabtree that no play = no pay, and with the possibility of a hold out in the near future it could be quite some time for Mike got another chance at a pay check. Head Coach Mike Singletary said it was a “fair deal” for both sides, while Hammer simply said “you got to pray just to make it today.” I really hope Hammer showed up to that meeting with the giant golden “H” chain on and the sports coat with the giant shoulder pads in it. Nothing says you mean business like that.

Thought #4- Speaking of gold chains and former rap “stars,”  apparently hanging out with Deion Sanders isn’t as cool as it used to be. Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant has been ruled ineligible for this season after lying about going to Sanders home and working out with him. That’s embarrassing Prime Time. Dez basically just gave you a pity jog, then denied it. Yup, you’re officially that old guy at the rec, trying to slide in and lift with the young guys from local high school, mean while creeping all the high school girls out by being a little helpful in your demonstration of proper squat techniques. Granted, Dez shouldn’t have lied about spending time with you, but he was still in the running for homecoming court at that point, so I understand where he was coming from.

Thought #5 – Pod cast tomorrow hopefully. A look back, a look ahead, and we’ll pitch the suggestions from shoes. Will Karl’s L.A. Lights make a run? Or will it be Shawn Kemp’s Reebok? We shall see.
