Tenho saudades mesmo é do Cacareco. Para aqueles que não tiveram a honra de conhecer essa ilustre figura pública, explico. Trata-se de um vereador de índole inquestionável que ganhou a eleição de 1954. Ganhou,  mas não levou. Foi discriminado pela Justiça Eleitoral apenas por não pertencer ao gênero humano. Cacareco,  da família dos Rhinocerotidae, popularmente conhecido como Rinoceronte foi trazido do Rio de Janeiro para a inauguração do zôo paulistano. Na época, a população descontente com o prefeito Adhemar de Barros votou maciçamente no rinoceronte, tanto que o bicho teve dez vezes mais votos do que o candidato humano mais votado daquele ano. Hoje em dia, com o advento da tecnologia, votar resume-se em  digitar alguns números tendo como trilha sonora uma musiquinha de vídeo game. Ainda que alguns candidatos a vereadores na última eleição tenham tentado usurpar o espólio político do saudoso animal inscrevendo-se com nomes esdrúxulos como Wadão do Jegue, Zé do Caixão ou Bozo, nenhum deles possuia o charme e carisma do Cacareco, que deve estar no céu dos animais, rindo de satisfação. Mesmo para os bichos, a justiça tarda, mas não falha…

I’m sure you have watched in awe, as I have, when Marcelo Garcia takes the back of a bigger, stronger opponent, sinks the rear naked choke and effortlessly forced the brute to tap! It’s amazing! Why is it that some people have the ability to tap anyone whenever they sink a choke, where as others strain and struggle only to have their opponent break free and escape their hold! From a quick glance it often appears their technique is the same or similar, so what is it?

Is it their physical attributes? Size, strength, power, leverage etc… Not likely as someone like Marcelo fights at 76kg and routinely defeats opponents 20+kg heavier in the absolute (open) division with the most basic of chokes. Watch below as he submits the 95kg behemoth Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferreira!

How about some secret hidden technique that no one is aware of? No, I dont think that’s it either. Marcelo usually submits his opponents with basic techniques, such as the Rear Naked Choke, the Guillotine Choke and the North South Choke. Below is a ruthlessly quick display of Marcel’s legendary choking ability against Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro!

I was lucky enough to spend a week training with Marcelo in September 2008 and have been studying his game for over a year now in the hopes of uncovering some of his secrets! This is what I have come up with so far. Firstly Marcelo’s technique with his chokes is flawless! By that I mean that EVERY single time he choked me from any position, it was always a blood choke(closing carotid arteries). Not an air choke (closing of the windpipe and pain from crushing your Adam’s apple), not a neck crank where your head felt like it was being twisted off! His arms were ALWAYS in the right spot, which usually meant that either his forearm, bicep or both were perfectly positioned to isolate my head from my body and dig directly into my carotid arteries! LESSON 1, Learn to feel for the carotid arteries! Develop an instinctive feel for when your arms are in correct position for a blood choke.

The second thing that I discovered is that when Marcelo wrapped his arms around my neck, it was like having a giant anaconda wrap itself around its prey in attempt to squeeze the life out of it!!! His ability to squeeze your neck is out of this world and I must say I have never had the pleasure of feeling any other like it! No one else’s squeeze come close! Not body builder’s or other big, strong guys, NO ONE! LESSON 2, develop your squeeze! Here is a clip of Eddie Bravo talking about the squeeze, its importance and one way of developing it, enjoy!

Try these simple concepts out for a couple of months and marvel at how much more efficient your chokes will become! If you put in the time  you will become a choking machine and be well on your way to developing vice like chokes! As Eddie says, “you must be like Marcelo”!

It’s hard to deny that Brazilians make up the greater part of the history of the ADCC. Brazil has by far the greatest number of titles (41*) and nearly all of the event’s legends are Brazilian.

However, recognition must be paid where recognition is due to the non-Brazilians who have shone in the seven installments of the ADCC. We will rank the first five and remember the achievements of each of them.

1st place – Mark Kerr – Kerr is twice champion of the over 98kg category, in 1999 and 2000. He also won the absolute in 2000. In 2001 he managed to dethrone phenomenon Jose Mario Sperry in the supermatch. Mark bid farewell to the ADCC in 2003, after losing to Ricardo Arona in the supermatch. Beyond his titles, he also played a part in the historic first match of the 2001 absolute category, when he defeated the 40kg-lighter Leo Vieira.

2nd place – Jeff Monson (USA) – In the early days he was known as Jeff Monson. He participated in the ADCC ever since 1999 (with an absence in 2007) and is signed up for this year’s installment, in the over 99kg category in 2005. Beyond that, he was under 99kg runner-up in 2000 and 2001. And, of course, no one can forget how he left the Ibirapuera gymnasium naked, in 2003, when he felt he was shortchanged by the referees after losing to Saulo Ribeiro in the absolute.

3rd place – Dean Lister (USA) – He came out of no where to replace Jon Olav Einemo’s place in the absolute of 2003 and surprised everyone by beating Pe de Pano, Saulo Ribeiro and Alexandre Cacareco to become champion. Two years later, he was in the supermatch against Jean Jacques Machado and drubbed by 8 to 0 the Brazilian, who is to this day considered one of the most technical players to ever set foot on the ADCC mat. The world awaited anxiously to watch Lister face Roger Gracie two years later in the ADCC supermatch, but the American was unable to make it.

4th place – Ricco Rodriguez (USA) – Of the seven installments, he only didn’t participate in 2003 and 2007. he was champion of the over 99kg division in 1998, beating Sean Alvarez in the final. Beyond that, he took third in the absolute in 1999 and was runner-up in the over 99kg in 2000. To close, he took part in the best match of ADCC 2005, against Marcelo Garcia, in the absolute.

5th place – Jon Olav Einemo (Norway), Mark Robinson (South Africa), Sanae Kikuta (Japan), Kareem Barchlov (Russia) – the quartet completes the list of non-Brazilians to have won the main divisions of the ADCC.

Andre Galvao has dedicated the last 12 months of his life to MMA. Since August 2008 he’s had four fights, winning three by submission and suffering one split (and controversial) decision loss, at Dream. Now the two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion (2005, 2008) and runner-up (2006 and 2007) is back in the grappling game.

The Fernando Terere and Eduardo Telles pupil, who once figured in two-time ADCC champion Leo Vieira’s team, is one of those favored to win the under 88kg category. The category has no owner, as 2007’s champion Demian Maia will not take part.

Direct from Rio de Janeiro, where he trains with beasts of the caliber of Anderson Silva and Rodrigo Minotauro, Galvao spoke with the GRACIEMAG.com at the ADCC Blog, and had the following to say:

Blog: How is your final stage of training for the ADCC going?
Galvao: I’m doing explosiveness training without the gi. I’ve been training without the gi for some time now. I haven’t been putting on the gi every day since I started fighting MMA.

Blog: To you is the ADCC closer to being MMA than Jiu-Jitsu?
Galvao: No, no. It’s certainly closer to Jiu-Jitsu. But even so I feel it’s much different from competing in the gi. Besides that, the opponents are different.

Blog: In 2007 you competed in the under 77kg category, but this year you moved up to 88kg. Who will be your main adversaries? Would you risk pointing out a favorite?
Galvao: I can’t leave out Braulio Estima, Rousimar Touquinho, Rafael Lovato Jr. or Tarsis Humphreys. Those guys are big-time tough with enormous submission grappling experience. As for a favorite, that all depends on what happens that day. There is no favourite.

Blog: You didn’t compete at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship but are returning to the ADCC. Why this preference?
Galvao: I didn’t compete at the Worlds because I was training a lot without the gi for MMA. As for the ADCC, it’s a really good tournament. The recognition you receive is much greater than at the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds, mainly in the realm I am in, which is MMA. And there are also the money prizes, which help a lot. But I love Jiu-Jitsu and am dying to compete at a Worlds.

Blog: Looking back, what would you consider to be your greatest moment in the ADCC?
Galvao: Ah, for sure my matches with Cacareco, in the absolute third-place dispute in 2007, and with Mike Fowler, in the under 77kg third-place dispute. Those were great moments.

Blog: Can you recall any mistake you made in 2007 that you hope not to make this year?
Galvao: In the under 77kg semifinal I was ahead on the scorecards against Pablo Popovitch and decided to open up to do something more. There was a minute left in the match and I ended up getting surprised by him.

Blog: To you, who is the best of all in the ADCC?
Galvao: Roger Gracie. I remember in 2005 he finished everybory.

Jon Olav Einemo is a giant, both in physical size and in his status as a grappler. Hailing from Norway, Einemo blazed a trail at the 2002 Mundials in the blue belt Absolute division winning five fights out of six via submission. Such is his fearsome reputation in the NHB scene, no opponent was willing to step into the ring at Finnfight 5 in 2001. Wise men indeed, as when one actually meets Einemo face to face ringside, he clearly casts a menacing figure. Einemo has been dogged by niggling injuries since his appearance at ADCC 2001, yet this did not stop him travelling to Brasil in 2003 to enter and win the under 98.9 Kg division, taking out black belts Roger Gracie and Cacareco along the way, a feat that even Einemo finds incredible and it is this humbleness and lack of ego that separates him from the pack. Meet Jon Olav outside of the ring and you will meet a quiet and polite young man, but step into the cage with him and it’s a different story. As a mixed martial artist he only loss to Fabricio Werdum. He’s got a killing armbar!

Os mais novos dos nossos leitores se lembram, no máximo, da marchinha de  carnaval que foi feita para o famoso rinoceronte Cacareco, eleito por cerca de 100 mil votos de protesto como vereador da cidade de São Paulo, em 1958.   E Cacareco tornou-se  um dos mais famosos casos de voto nulo em massa da história da política brasileira, tendo sido  o “candidato” mais votado do pleito (o partido mais votado não chegou a 95 mil votos).

No Rio, mesmo sem marchinha de Carnaval, o macaco Tião (diminutivo do padroeiro da cidade, São Sebastião) chimpanzé do zoológico carioca, em 1988 foi lançado “candidato” a prefeito da cidade pelos humoristas do Casseta e Planeta, ganhou mais de 400 mil votos e ficou em terceiro lugar, superando outros candidatos oficiais. Famoso, Tião morreu de diabetes aos 34 anos, e o prefeito carioca à época decretou luto oficial e bandeiras a meio-pau, no zoológico, durante oito dias.

Mas é claro que esta saudável farra democrática não podia durar, expondo à ironia pública essa horda política nacional de tão baixa qualidade. A partir do pleito de 1996 nós fomos impossibilitados de exercer este saudável instrumento democrático do protesto específico, já que em nome da eficiência eleitoral instituiu-se a urna eletrônica que joga todos os votos inválidos no lixão dos votos brancos e nulos. E sumiram os cacarecos e os tiãos da nossa rebeldia irônica. O máximo que conseguimos depois disso foi eleger  os Enéias da vida, ou votar em candidato com o apelido de defunto e que usava como slogan de campanha: “Vote em Defunto, pois político bom nasce morto”.

Hoje, lendo a notícia que repasso abaixo, sobre o “candidato” canino das eleições mexicanas, lembrei-me dos nossos saudosos Cacareco e Tião. E que votar branco ou nulo já não tem o mesmo gostinho de vingança… Além do que ainda aparecem alguns calhordas eleitorais que anunciam que os votos nulos e brancos são creditados aos candidatos mais votados. Mentira! Desde a Lei 9.504, de 1977 (que alterou a Lei 4.737, de 1965), estes votos brancos e nulos não são considerados válidos para o cálculo do quociente eleitoral! Portanto, se quer protestar, vote inválido, apesar de não ter o mesmo gostinho de antigamente. É um direito nosso, em contraposição ao espúrio direito tácito que os maus políticos têm de nos achacar, roubar e permanecer impunes.

No ano passado, torci pelo Obama. Neste, vou torcer pelo Fidel, no México… Apesar dele ser um pittbul, que eu associo à ferocidade insana da atual oposição brasileira formada pelo PSDB e DEM, acho que essa raça de candidato canino é diferente dos seus correpondentes humanos.

Que tal uma correntezinha de fé política no Fidel mexicano?

  ‘Fidel’, o cão, busca o voto dos mexicanos desiludidos com os políticos AFP – Sex, 03 Jul, 12h05CIDADE DO MÉXICO, México (AFP) – “Fidel”, um cão pitbull de um ano e meio, pêlo branco e com manchas cor de mel, vai tentar conquistar o voto dos decepcionados com a política mexicana nas eleições do próximo domingo com sua peculiar campanha na cidade de Guadalajara (oeste).

En novembro de 1988 o macaco Tião presentouse á alcaldía de Río de Janeiro baixo as siglas do Partido Bananista Brasileiro e obtivo máis de 400.000 votos. A idea de presentar a un mono como candidato surxíu dun grupo de humoristas que pretendía poñer en evidencia a falta de preparación do resto de aspirantes, pero a resposta popular superou tódalas expectativas.

Cun 9,5% do total dos votos, o Macaco Tião convertiuse no terceiro candidato máis votado da xornada, e nunha celebridade de por vida, ata o punto de que a cidade lle dedicou unha estatua trala súa morte. Por suposto, o Tribunal Electoral nunca recoñeceu a validez dos votos.

Pero non é o único caso: anos antes, en 1958, un rinoceronte chamado Cacareco presentouse ás eleccións de Sao Paulo e conseguiu gañalas holgadamente con máis de 100.000 votos. A iniciativa foi unha forma de protestar perante a corrupción dos demáis políticos, e dende aquela os votos protesta en Brasil siguen coñecéndose como votos cacarecos. Isto inspirou o Partido do Rinoceronte de Canadá cuxo simbólico líder tamén é un destes simpáticos animais.

Pero non só en Brasil se fan estas animaladas. En 1968, o Partido Internacional da Xuventude (coñecidos como os Yippies) intentou presentar, sen éxito, a un porco como candidato á presidencia dos EEUU. Non entendo como non arrasou nas votacións, cun candidato de nome tan sonoro como Pigasus.

E se esto se intentou facer nunhas eleccións xerais, imaxinádevos nas locais!! De feito, existen casos nos que o alcalde legal dunha poboación foi un non humano: sucedeu en diversas comunidades unincorporated  como Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, onde o alcalde na actualidade é Junior Cochran, un labrador negro. En Sunol, California, foi Bosco, tamén un labrador negro… durante 10 anos!! Pero o meu caso favorito é o de Lajitas, Texas: toda unha saga familiar de cabras bebedoras de cerveza.
