After the exhibition at the Petit Palais, the Museum of Fine Arts in Paris, save the date of the Designer Frimousses dolls auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne, Paris’s prestigious auction house. Since 2003, fashion designers and artists have worked to create something beautiful to help children of Darfur, crafting dolls that become veritable works of art. The whole amount raised during the auction will support the vaccination programme in one of the regions most devastated by the deadly conflict there. Today, more than 4.7 million people are affected, of which 2.2 million are children. Thanks to the Designer Frimousse operation, under the aegis of Laeticia Hallyday, ambassador for UNICEF France, UNICEF carries out the fight for children vaccination every year in the region of Darfur. Vaccination, a method that is both very effective and inexpensive, would prevent these deadly diseases from a very young age (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio) and would eradicate this scourge that affects thousands of children every day. The 2008 sale raised 219,130 Euros, used directly on the ground to finance emergency : in the Darfur region, 260,000 children and 195,000 pregnant women received vaccines. Don’t forget these dolls will be sold at auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne:

Après l’exposition au Petit Palais, n’oubliez pas la vente aux enchères des Frimousses de créateurs  demain: 19 Novembre, à Drouot Montaigne, Paris. Depuis 2003, créateurs de mode et artistes créent des poupées de collection uniques, de véritables oeuvres d’art pour venir en aide aux enfants du Darfour. La totalité des fonds collectés lors de la vente aux enchères soutiendra les programmes de vaccination dans une des régions les plus dévastées par des conflits meurtriers. Soit aujourd’hui, 4,7 millions de personnes, dont 2,2 millions d’enfants affectées. Grâce à l’opération Frimousses de Créateurs sous l’égide de Laeticia Hallyday, Marraine de l’Unicef France, l’Unicef se bat tous les ans pour la vaccination des enfants dans la région du Darfour. Car la vaccination est un moyen très efficace et peu couteux de prévenir et d’éradiquer les maladies invalidantes meurtrières dès le plus jeune âge (diphtérie, tétanos, coqueluche, poliomyélite, rougeole). L’édition Frimousses de Créateurs 2008 a permis d’envoyer sur le terrain 219 130 € pour financer les activités de vaccination en urgence. 260 000 enfants et 198 000 femmes enceintes recevront des vaccins. Laatst kreeg ik het nieuwe magazine van Douglas in de brievenbus en toen ik deze aan het doorbladeren was viel mijn oog op een klein proefmonstertje van het allernieuwste parfum van Cacharel genaamd Scarlett. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid was gewekt en nadat ik het even uitgeprobeerd had was ik helemaal enthiousast over dit nieuwe luchtje. Normaal gesproken ben ik niet zo’n fan van de Cacharel producten maar Scarlett ruikt echt heel lekker zoet en doet me meteen aan een mooie zomerse dag denken. Ook het flesje ziet er fabulous uit, heel simpel maar het pas echt perfect bij de parfum.

Dit vond ik op de website van Douglas over Scarlett.

In de kopnoot wordt men verleidt door de natuurlijke frisheid van theebladeren, citrusvruchten en sappige peren. Het hart wordt door een betoverend bouquet van witte bloesembladeren tot stralen gebracht. Witte Muskus en warm sandelhout verlenen de compositie een sensueel slot.

Scarlett is o.a. te koop bij Douglas vanaf  32,40 voor 30 ml. Ik ben nog steeds op zoek naar een lekker parfum die niet al te zwaar en al te zoet is en ik denk dat ik me Scarlett een definet winner heb gevonden. En ik heb zelfs nog een Douglasbon liggen t.w.v 25,- dus ik denk dat ik binnekort maar eens even een bezoekje ga brengen aan Douglas!

Les pop up store traduisez “magasins éphémères”, se sont des boutiques à durée de vie limitée allant de deux jours à quelques mois. Cette nouvelle tendance commerciale créée un véritable buzz auprès des marques de mode qui y voient un outil de promotion et une zone test pour de nouvelles collections.

On peut citer plusieurs marques qui ont déjà utilisé ce concept. En mars dernier, la marque Cacharel a ouvert un showroom exclusivement pour le lancement de sa collection Liberty.

Uniqlo, avant l’ouverture de son magasin Paris Opéra le 1er octobre dernier a mis en place une boutique éphémère au coeur du Marais pour donner un avant-goût aux clientes parisiennes.

Prada a également ouvert un magasin éphémère à Paris, place Beauvau dans le 8e arrondissement, jusqu’à la fin de l’année. La boutique éphémère de la prestigieuse marque italienne a entièrement été designé par l’architecte  Roberto Baciocchi. Elle présente sur une superficie de plus de 500 mètres carrés les collections de vêtements et les accessoires de la marque.

Les magasins éphémères sont aussi utilisés par d’autres secteurs comme l’alimentaire Nutella, Bonne Maman etc. mais aussi dans le milieu musical. Selon CB News, Universal Music France a fait appel à la société My Pop Up Store pour la création d’une boutique éphémère dédiée au merchandising de Michael Jackson au sein de l’Olympia, à Paris. Ce pop-up store accompagne la sortie de l’album remix du chanteur et du film “This is it”. Ce magasin éphémère est ouvert du 28 octobre jusqu’en février 2010 et propose une large gamme de produits dérivés (T-shirts, casquettes, disques…).

Okay, I know that Paris Fashion Week ended a couple of weeks ago, but it took me a while to look at all of the shows because (1) They are so fabulous and (2) There are so many!  The designers showing in Paris definately kept the standard of the being the best.  I was absolutely blown away by some of the shows and there were an impressive amount of collections where I loved every piece (Chanel, Tsumori Chisato, Givenchy, Rue du Mail, Valentino, Isabel Marant….to name a few).  AMAZING.  Anyway, there were many pieces that represented the trends that I’ve mentioned in the past few posts, but there were also a couple new looks that I will talk about as well.  But for the most part, for the Paris collections, anything goes!  I saw some pieces that were super structured, some that were relaxed, some pleated, some tight, bright colors, dark neturals and everything in between!  Here are some examples of what I thought were the best:

Trend: Cute Minis

Just like the rest, these are from the designers’ Spring line, but these cute little numbers are easily layered and totally in for the Fall!

Trend: Grecian Inspired Draping

This look is so flattering and serves as a great palate to add layers.

Trend: Metallics

This look wasn’t as flashy or abundant on the Paris runways, but it definitely still had a presence!

Trend: Jumpsuits & Rompers

These pieces are so easy to wear right now.  They are perfect with tights, a cardigan and a great belt!

Trend: Asymmetric

Trend: Ruffles & Bows

Lots and lots of ruffles!

Staple: Cool Jackets

Especially now, a unique jacket really makes an outfit pop.  Check these out for inspiration:

Ultra-feminine and comfortable, enough said!  Flowy shorts are perfect to pair with patterned tights when it gets a bit chilly.

Classic, chic & never goes out of style.

Styling Trend: Strong v. Feminine

Balance any outfit with this technique!  In Paris, it was mostly used with draping.

Styling Trend: Mixing Prints

Can be tricky, but take a few pointers from Dries Van Noten; the majority of their looks were compiled of patterned layers.

New Trend: Relaxed Pants

Whereas we saw a lot of Harem cut pants on the other runways, in Paris the entire pant leg was relaxed.  But designers also used lux, flowy fabrics, to make these comfortable pieces still luxurious, chic, and ready for a night on the town.  Some are still tailored, but others remind me of a genie pant! (in a good way!)

New Trend: Tuxedo-Inspired

There were a large amount of pieces on the Paris runways that seemed to be inspired by the tuxedo.  Whether the focus is on the lapel, cumberbund, bowtie, dickey, or simply the jacket, these pieces are a great way to dress up a casual outfit.

New Trend: Textures

What’s a great way to amp up some of your pieces? Look for ones that are more than two dimensional!  Textures add a unique dynamic to your every-day outfit.  Not sure where to start?  This is a great time to get textural sweaters, a fun, textured shirt to wear under a cardigan, a furry vest, or even something as simple as a quilted accesory.

C’est entendu, Robert Delpire est un grand monsieur de la photographie et de l’édition, nous l’avions compris à Arles cet été (billets ici et là).

L’exposition de la MEP (ici et 5/7 rue de Fourcy), récemment inaugurée, consacrée à cet éditeur et ancien directeur du centre national de la photographie qu’il contribua à fonder est une extension de celle d’Arles. En clair, si vous avez déjà vu Arles, il n’est vraiment pas indispensable d’aller à la MEP: en ce qui concerne, j’ai visité au pas de course. Pour les autres, l’exposition n’est peut-être pas totalement inutile, et je pense notamment au public adulte peu familier de la photographie mais aussi aux ados et aux enfants.

Au sous-sol, vous avez droit essentiellement au volet publicitaire, sponsorisé par Cacharel et Citröen, comme à Arles avec des illustrations vidéos. Pour le reste, l’essentiel de l’accrochage est consacré aux livres, complété de photographies mais sans réel fil conducteur: si les salles sont bien axées sur des thématiques, les photographies forment plutôt un pot-pourri. Néanmoins, parmi les auteurs les mieux représentés, on citera Cartier-Bresson et Koudelka ainsi que Sarah Moon.

Ce sera pour les moins connaisseurs l’occasion d’apprécier quelques tirages hyper connus comme le saut au-dessus de la flaque de Cartier-Bresson (billet ici) ou la fameuse voiture déformée de Lartigue (billet ici).

Here’s an interview I did with British-born, French photographer Sarah Moon about ten years ago.

Moon visited Toronto in spring 1999 to introduce a retrospective entitled Inventaire 1985-1999 at the Jane Corkin Gallery. It’s funny, but the Moon’s work still looks as fresh as it did in 1999 (and it looked as fresh in 1999 as it did in 1977). I’ve updated the story a little, but I’ll let the links supply more recent information on Moon and her work.

Moon first gained notoriety for shooting a series of now-iconic Cacharel ads over 20 years ago. These spots featured sort of retro-’20s bohemian waifs and looked like the photographs were hand-tinted and covered in a sort of patina of nostalgia. They were also wholly original for their time.

By 1999, her most striking images are saturated with colour or are in richly toned black and white. Most importantly, her work is concerned with form over content. Models become the background and the shape of the clothing becomes the focus. In her 1999 spring/summer campaign for Hermès, the model is completely absent, replaced by a peacock wearing a watch around his long, skinny neck. like an Inuit sculptor discovering his subject in the soapstone, Moon said, “It’s more the form of the clothing that makes these pictures exist.” She noted that the works selected for the retrospective of her fashion and fine art photography – the images that can stand alone on the wall – tend toward the abstract. “I know vaguely what I’m looking for,” she said, smiling, “but I don’t always achieve it.”

Speaking in rapid fire, clipped English, Moon was enchanting, truly at ease in her own skin. Dressed in a mix of Japanese and French designers, her small, fine boned face framed with owlish, tortoisehell glasses, she easily looked 10 years younger than her 58 years.

When asked if having a woman behind the camera changes the dynamic of fashion photography, Moon replied, “I think so. [Female photographers and models] don’t work on the same terms of seduction. We work as a team. The camera enhances that dialogue. When I was a model there was not the same rapport [with male photographers].” With female shooters, she added, “there was a kind of complicity.”

Moon’s photographic work led to directing television commercials for Cacherel, among others. This, in turn, led to her co-writing and directing a feature-length film, Mississippi One in 1991 – a story about a father who kidnaps his daughter and which Moon describes as a love story that ended badly. “Between the moment I began writing the film, finding money and trying to make it exist,” she said, “it took three years.” Since then, Moon has filmed several documentaries about artists, and at the time of our interview was working on “a portrait with video” about photographer Lillian Bassman.

As Moon pays homage to artists who informed her work with her documentaries, she’s also into working with forward designers such as Martin Margiela (when he was still designing for Hermès) and Alexander McQueen. Moon also admires the photography of American David LaChappelle. “I like the way he takes his job seriously,” she said.

And, no nostalgia here, by 1999 Moon had embraced the digital age, editing her films on an AVID and tinkering with Photoshop. “I love the computer,” she said, “I have nothing against it as long as you don’t feel the machine. It’s the same with the camera. I don’t like to show the kitchen.”
