Iraq for Sale

Taking a whole new perspective on war documentaries about the American occupancy of the Middle East, “Iraq for Sale” takes a closer look at the private contractors, or “war profiteers,” who have turned the conflict in Iraq into a full on industry. Throughout the military infrastructure, there are holes and gaps of positions that need to be filled. Where the military falls short, these private contractors fill in the gaps, with approximately 1,000 of these workers making a living in the Middle East. To put it into dollars, which is all the population cares about, 40 out of every 100 dollars that Congress controls goes to the private contracts that these firms bid on (in a slanted, unfair bidding, if the bidding even takes place). Along with that, some of the employees for these contractors are making six-figure salaries, putting a salary from the U.S. military to shame. Unfortunately, firms such as these cut corners in providing safe working conditions for their workers. Companies such as Blackwater Security, CACI, Titan, and KBR have many accounts from families of employees who have been injured or have passed away due to these shortcuts. They will go as far as to not provide them with armored vehicles, less staff than require, and non of the tools that are needed to get a job done effectively and safely. Unfortunately, the privatization of the U.S. occupancy of Iraq has built a multibillion dollar industry for various companies, while the government believes the job is getting done, and they don’t have to worry about it. While this is a negative trend that has flourished in today’s society, the American people would be better off to leave the military actions; whether it be transporting, water treatment, food and laundry, or even mechanic, we would all be better off to leave it to the military.

Those damn dirty contractors.

Each night, KBR throws out garbage cans full of food. Contractors are not allowed to take food out of the Dining Facility. I suppose the US Army thinks that Contractors get paid enough and they should be satisfied. Contractors don’t need any extra benefits like taking all of that fabulous food out of the Dining Facility. The US Army would rather throw it all in the garbage.

The message here is what?

“Fuck Contractors! We’d rather throw all that extra food in the garbage than let them take a few scraps back to their rooms to eat.”

Typical Army bullshit.

The guy who made this rule is probably a pissed off Master Sergeant who wound up a Contractor after he retired.

That’s usually what happens.

I’ve seen it hundreds of times. The biggest assholes that I’ve had to deal with overseas while contracting with the Army were guys who came to you at the end of their tour of duty begging for a job. If it were up to me, I’d not hire one of them.

Bunch of hypocritical assholes all. Fuck ‘em.

The Federal Appeals Court decision to toss a lawsuit claiming contractors tortured detainees in Iraq

The Federal Appeals Court decision to toss a lawsuit claiming contractors tortured detainees in Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison is what you’d expect from a tyranny.

The new ruling brushes off the charges by 212 Iraqis who said they or their late husbands were abused by U.S. personnel at Abu Ghraib, and charged private security firm CACI International Inc., of Arlington, Va. The plaintiffs in these cases allege they were beaten, electrocuted, raped, subjected to attacks by dogs, and otherwise abused by private contractors working as interpreters and interrogators at Abu Ghraib prison.

In a 2-1 ruling, the D.C. Court of Appeals said CACI “is protected by laws barring suits filed as the result of military activities during a time of war,” the Associated Press reported.

“During wartime, where a private service contractor is integrated into combatant activities over which the military retains command authority, a tort claim arising out of the contractor’s engagement in such activities shall be pre-empted,” Judge Silberman wrote.

If so, with about as many U.S.-led contract mercenaries as regular army involved in the Iraq conflict, this decision preposterously exempts some 150,000 fighters from legal action for any crimes they commit. It gives a shoot-to-kill pass to privateers such as Blackwater, whose operatives on one occasion are said to have gunned down 17 unarmed Iraqi civilians.

“This abuse and torture of these prisoners detained during war time constituted war crimes and torture in violation of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, the U.S. War Crimes Act, the Convention against Torture, and the U.S. Federal Anti-torture Statute—felonies, punishable by death if death results as a violation thereof,” said Francis Boyle, an international law authority at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

I was watching the DVD this afternoon and thought I’d share… I know you can find it on the Internet (I pulled this one from Googlevideo), but another copy will not hurt.

It always makes me wonder why G. W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney are not in court and/or prison. For years I was proud of being an American. In less than four years, these men made me ashamed. They have disgraced and disfigured our country and we will feel the reprecussions for many, many years to come.

Isn’t it true that a captain is responsible for the actions that happen when he is in control of the ship? If so, then these “gentlemen” are responsible for the unfettered “theft” of American money, the deaths and murders of hundreds of Americans and Iraqi people, the torture and maiming of individuals for unspecified and highly questionable “crimes,” disregard for the needs of the American and Iraqi countries, mistreatment and disrespect for American soldiers, and numerous other crimes. What a black mark on the history of America.

But, as you know, the Bush’s and his like do not care what we really think; they made BILLIONS from the war. They just insulate themselves and plead ignorance…

She’s deeply symbolic – and disarmingly pretty, too.

Thanks to Sophie for suggesting Acacia as Name of the Day.

Acacia’s roots are as a nature name. Also known as a thorntree or a wattle, the flowering trees are found most everywhere, especially Australia.

But unlike Linden or Pine, calling your darling daughter Acacia packs a symbolic punch akin to Dove.

The name derives from the Greek ake – thorn. Akakia became acacia in Latin. The genus was among many first described by legendary eighteenth century botanist Carolus Linnaeus. And while the Egyptian acacia is indeed thorny, not all are – giraffes eat the leaves of at least one African variety.

Over the years, the acacia has been used as a symbol, including:

In Freemasonry, the acacia stands for the endurance of the soul and resurrection;

<sup> </sup>The bark and root of the acacia is used as ritual incense in India and China – it is believed the smoke wards off evil spirits;

Some scholars suggest that Moses’ burning bush is an Acacia tree;

Most agree that the Ark of the Covenant was made out of acacia wood;

Some of the flowers are referred to as mimosas, and traditionally given out on International Women’s Day;

Acacia Fraternity is the only international fraternity with a word rather than Greek letters as their name – the fraternity has strong traditional ties to Freemasonry;

Some sites report that the acacia was a symbol of secret love in the Victorian language of flowers.

In other uses, a 2007 fantasy novel by David Anthony Durham is titled Acacia: The War with the Mein; a Civil War-era tugboat wore the name, as did a Coast Guard ship sunk by the Germans in 1942. A 2003 South Korean horror film was called Acacia, and an acacia tree featured prominently in the storyline.

What with all this buzz, it is perhaps surprising that Acacia never caught on. She’s never charted in the US Top 1000. However, you’ll find plenty of nineteenth century Acacias in US Census records – and a surprising number of them hail from Puerto Rico. There are species of acacia native to the island, but I must be missing something!

There are at least two valid pronunciations for the given name. Most people will refer to the tree as ah KAY shah. As a name, ah KAY see ah or ah KAY see uh is also valid, and I can easily imagine ah kay SEE uh being favored, too.

With the nickname option Casey – or Cacy or Caci - this is a versatile choice. She’s a very prettyalternative to the equally botanical choice Olivia.

” sapa2 aja disana”
” rame Kok dan ryan n etc”
” etc itu siapa aja “…….arrggghhhhhhh
stop it dika….

At the last meeting of the Observatory’s Population and Society Group, members shared how they use market segmentation tools.

These tools divide the market or population into subgroups with similar motivations, and are used for social and market research. Widely-used bases for segmenting include:

Geographic differences

Personality differences

Demographic differences

Use of product differences

Demography and Health group members use the segmentation tools to discover such things as marketing preferences, lifestyle choices and concentrations of ethnic groups. This information is then used to direct public services in the West Midlands.

The market leaders in segmentation tools seem to be Experian’s MOSAIC tool and CACI’s ACORN tool. Both have their pros and cons.

The Demography and Health group is interested to learn how widespread the use of these tools is in the West Midlands’ public sector, with a view to seeing whether partners could be drawn together to purchase the software together. Not only could this save money, it could lead to greater joined up working.

Do you use segmentation tools in your day to day work? Would you find it useful to work closer with partners? Please add your comments, questions and thoughts here…
