<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><strong>S</strong>o i had these three servos and thought about how to use them in a project.  i saw flexpicker robots on the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHuDvVa7mkw">internets</a> which were really impressive. had to have one. found six ball joints in my drawer and started to do some cad. i needed twelve ball joints or at least something comparable, so i had to make six from scratch. a few days of cnc-milling and drilling later i had my delta-robot. now it&#8217;s time to find a purpose for this thing. i thought about attaching some kind of head to it with an integrated display. i plan to control robot and display via rs232 and a microcontroller. so there&#8217;s more to come.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I have now refined the plans for the leaf sculpture installation for Bridgeport.  Floating leaves in a three dimensional space requires making sure they have enough clearance from each other in all directions as well as being placed so that they don&#8217;t hit anyone or anything else &#8211; along with looking good.  In the studio I am finishing the East Indian paintings for Merced and getting the studio ready for my Holiday Open Studios &#8211; dates and times will be posted soon.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Just heard on KFI AM 640: the Los Angeles Police Department will soon join the ranks of law enforcem]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Just heard on <strong><a href="http://www.kfi640.com/main.html" target="_blank">KFI AM 640:</a></strong> the Los Angeles Police Department will soon join the ranks of law enforcement agencies using Next-Generation 911 (Next Gen 911 or NG 911) systems. <a href="http://www.govtech.com/gt/articles/623136" target="_blank"><strong>Here&#8217;s an example</strong></a> of Florida County implementing NG911.</p>
<p>According to KFI, people in Los Angeles will soon be able to call 911 and if appropriate the LAPD will direct them to send images, texts, and <em>video</em> to the LAPD CAD (computer-aided dispatch) system. CAD can then send the information to patrol units to assist in their law enforcement efforts.</p>
<p>Hey, maybe they can transmit it to other agencies as well (hint, hint)!</p>
<p>Kudos to the LAPD for integrating available Web 2.0 and communications technologies into CAD operations and maximizing the increasing potential to fight crime.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Implementing Revit in your practice]]></title>

As I wrote, I relaised that actually these principles are fairly sound for any software implementation.  If you are an IT professional &#8211; you should know all this already and I apologise, but this post is not for you.  If you do not have a dedicated IT department or if you are the architect tasked (taxed) with implementing Revit (or Office 2007 etc.) &#8211; then read on.</p>
<p>A successful implementation will rely on a few commonsense rules and a lot of hard work.  Ensure you know what Revit is, I don&#8217;t mean that to sound trite, but ensure you know what it is that you are wishing to get from the software.  Have expectations, begin them fairly low, but know what it is you want and check that the software will be able to deliver.  You will be sorely disappointed if after 6 weeks of work you cannot produce what you had hoped.</p>
<p>Choose a small, simple project to trial Revit on.  Begin with simple geometry.  Choose a project that is homed in one office (assuming that you may have more than one to begin with), this will make it easier to manage and also to address any issues quickly and simply.  Feedback will be given and you can train, teach and mentor as needed.</p>
<p>Have a project champion &#8211; this person should be respected, have credibilty and gravitas within the office and  should be reasonably senior.  They do not have to be actively using Revit, though it would help, but should be actively championing the cause and rallying the team when the going gets tough.</p>
<p>There will be an element of cultural change required.  Your champion should be able to help with this.  But the whole team needs to know that they will be working differently.  The project must be executed differently.  A lot of work will be done up front before anything sensible can be delivered.  I would strongly advise against changing the model close to the deadline for printing and submission.  Allow a few days to &#8220;lock &#8220;the model in order to get prints out.  If you don&#8217;t &#8211; you might get yourselves in a very bad mess.</p>
<p>Be realistic about what to model and what to draw.  Some items should be modeled &#8211; some merely drawn.  Take for example doors.  Model them.  They will be used often, they will need scheduling, they will be altered, they have common characteristics (jamb, frame and so on).  I wouldn&#8217;t model them to the fine detail on the door pattern or handles for example.  Draw these if you are planning to render.  By not modeling every detail you will be able to save time and use your efforts better elsewhere.</p>
<p>For the project you are undertaking &#8211; consider the advantages of Revit for different types of work.  Residential &#8211; clients understand models and visualisations, they are not so keen on floor plans.  The rendered model is key here.  Hospitality &#8211; changes to items within hotel rooms such as beds or baths can flow through the whole model and make large changes easier to bear.  Communicate these advantages wt your team, it will help them see the bigger picture and the advantages to what you are doing.</p>
<p>Revit and BIM (Building Information Model click <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_Information_Modeling">here</a> for Wikipedia definition) can change the scope of services you offer.  These can be extended and you can work closer with other professions, structural or environmental engineers for example.  Be sensible &#8211; don&#8217;t offer your services until you have discovered what you can and cannot achieve as a team.  Don&#8217;t bite off more than you can chew.</p>
<p>In short, for a successful Revit implementation &#8211; begin small, plan, communicate, train and support.  These are absolutely crucial for the success of any project.  By doing these five things you will engage the practice, engage the client and be able to change your CAD strategy and ultimately deliver better value and work more effectively.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I have just completed most of the working drawings for the bird sculpture for United Hospital Center.  This consists of going back and forth between CAD, Photoshop, and Illustrator and the architectural plans of the building.  I have designed plates aluminum to be mounted flush to the ceiling.  The strands of birds will be mounted to these plates.  I now have to number each strand and all the measurements before I have the birds cut.</p>

<p>While only coming below wave b low will eliminate all bullish potential, if this is a triangle with the final peak yet to come, a break of 1.4814 is likely to result in a swift move towards 1.47 or so.  Usually in triangles, wave B is the most &#8220;messy&#8221;, with overlapping, time consuming action.  Since we should already be in wave C of a triangle, if the triangle scenario is valid, confidence in this outlook is not very high.</p>
<p>Aussie is in a similar boat, though it has made fresh highs.</p>

<p>From 0.8914, 5 waves are complete, which itself should be wave [v] of v of 2/B.  Subsequent action is not mature enough to warrant clear labeling.  The first attempt at the break of the lower channel has &#8220;failed&#8221;.  The next one is likely to be only minute [i], which should also ideally &#8220;fail&#8221;.  The third attempt is likely to succeed, as that would be minute [iii].  Obviously, at this time, this is pure conjecture.</p>
<p>Loonie has pierced thru the technically significant 1.06 level and as long as the 1.04 level holds (what is marked as wave [ii], the bullish outlook (USD strength) is clearly the primary expectation.</p>

<p>Swissy and Kiwi are exhibiting similar patterns.  Cable is muddy enough to not warrant any speculation.  It seems to be the sole currency that has more bears than USD (or at least close enough).  Action from 1.58 to current 1.67 levels should have trapped the bears with great deal of pain.  Potentially we are in a wave 4 triangle or some consolidation pattern, with a high above 1.70 completing the entire move off 1.35 lows from earlier this year.  Any remaining trapped bears are likely to throw in the towel at that point.</p>
<p>Yen has also completed what appears to be a double zigzag (with an extended Y).  If this is valid, then the next move of significance should be Yen weakness (USD/JPY strength, towards 101 or thereabouts, from current 89 levels).  The long term target of under 80 is needed to complete the wave 5 target that has been in the making for about 25 years.</p>
