More like a house dance party with three different DJs.
The show was hosted by Place Records and held at 443 Kent St.
Playing there were:
Decided to go to this show/party while still being sick. Hoping I didn’t make anyone I know very sick.
Despite being sick, totally enjoyed and had a fun time.
People who attended had a great time.
pH started off the set and it was a fun set.
Karn played next and he was like wow. Surprised he played a remix of Think About Life’s Sweet Sixteen.
I didn’t stay long for Cadence Weapon’s set but his set sounded amazing, he started off with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Heads Will Roll.
He mostly did a DJ set so I don’t think he was doing any rapping for this show.
Stayed there for about 30 minutes. He also played Roy Orbinson’s “You Got It”.
Overall it was a crazy house party/show.

Here is Karn remixing Think About Life’s Sweet Sixteen (Sorry for the quality of the video since it was really dark)

If anyone wanted proof as to how awesome Edmonton is just watch this:

Coming Home by the Shout Out Out Out Outs and Cadence Weapon

The awesome use of fire in only one of the things that makes this music video so epic. The combination of synth pop and rap is rare and truly amazing. The Shout Out Out Out Outs are synth pop perfection. Members Nik Kozub, Jason Troock, Lyle Bell, Will Zimmerman, Gravy and Clint Frazier are considered by many adoring fans to be one of the best local Edmonton bands. Their notoriety has come from steady airplay on campus radio stations and on CBC radio 3. Their second album Reintegration Time was released in March which was the follow up to their celebrated debut album Not Saying/Just Saying which was nominated for a Best Alternative Album Juno. One of the unique aspects of their group is their use of two drummers.

There’s nothing bad I could say about Cadence Weapon ever (except for maybe the fact that he doesn`t like the club Halo but that can be forgiven). Even `the establishment’ think he`s awesome. He was named the Poet Laureate for the City of Edmonton this year by the Edmonton Arts Council. Cadence Weapon aka Roland Pemberton, born and raised in Edmonton, has so far released 2 lps and 2 mix tapes. His debut album Breaking Kayfabe was so critically acclaimed that he was nominated for the Polaris Prize in 2006 (losing to Final Fantasy). He’s not a typical rapper, he uses techniques from rock and pop. This doesn’t always turn out well ( not naming any one in particular… cough… Limp Biskit… cough…) but Cadence Weapon makes it work. In this song he doesn’t just rap he also screams. And how can you not love a song that screams we do acid more than several times. Cadence Weapon is best known for using Edmonton as his muse.

This isn’t a typical mix of rap and pop. To start off this song is 7 minutes long, four minutes longer than the average song rap or pop. Both Cadence Weapon and the Shout Out Out Out Outs are at the top of their game in this song so the length isn’t a weakness. As the song goes on it becomes apparent that the length is needed to get all of the awesomeness out. This hybrid works because the artists don’t compromise their sound. They stand true to their music and you can feel the authenticity of this song.

Even if you don’t always remember the last out in the Shout Out Out Out Out’s name, this song and it’s artists are standouts.

Well, technically, I guess this isn’t a mash-up; it’s a remix. GZA approached the boys in The Hood Internet, asking them to do their thing to Mando Diao’s “Dance With Somebody” so he could lay down some original verses over it. They obliged. Cadence Weapon was involved too, somehow. No matter what happened, the result is a damn good remix. Very catchy. Listen to it below. Thanks to people over at Pitchfork for providing the song for your listening pleasure.

Hello, Edmonton! I’m back for the next couple of days to visit family for Thanksgiving. Although I’d hardly call this cold, barren city a relaxing vacation destination, it’s nice to be back in the place where I grew my roots, especially as a music journalist. I have so many fond music memories here: shows at the Starlite, DJs spinning at the Black Dog, random run-ins with local musicians on Whyte Avenue …

That being said, I’d like this post to be a tribute to the local bands that continue to put Edmonton on the map. You all hold a magical place in my left ventricle.

Hey y’all! I just got back from an AMAZING concert, Jedi Electro. Remember them? And I vow, I VOW TO SEE EVERY SINGLE LIVE SHOW OF THEIRS IN MONTRÉAL. I don’t care. They are without a doubt, the top 10 shows of this entire year for me…maybe ever!

Ahem. I am FIVE hours away from heading out to New York. I hate that I have no time to make more complete updates but I figure, two minutes in heaven, is better than one minute in heaven. So, one sentence reviews and thoughts are all the time I have right now. BECAUSE I’M GOING TO NEW YORK! Woohoo!

*if you have some favorite’s/recommended places (not touristy stuff, please) PUT ‘EM DOWN! I shall try my best*

—

Why am I going, you might ask? Well, I am going to first and foremost see Kylie Minogue at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Sunday. JA JA JA yes laugh all you want, but she is amazing. I adore her. And it will be INCREDIBL(Y SEXY). I am also going for the CMJ Marathon…hopefully I can find a cheaper way in. Mwwwwaaajajjjaa1

So, quick update on POP MTL. Great festival. The third day I went to see the Slew (Kid Koala + Wolfmother). Great combo, but the bass for Wolfmother tooooooooooooootally faded out the turntable skillz but regardless, Wolfmother kicks total ass! They toured for the one and only time but worry not! You can check out their album for FREE here! After that, I checked out the Japandroids. A band whose album I’ve had for so long but still have not listened to because of the hype. Were they good live?! Yes, they totally rocked it. Such great energy for a two person band. There was crowd surfing, moshing, arm flailing and nails flying. But, I didn’t dig it despite this. I STILL wouldn’t listen to the album. Maybe it was because I was gettin’ puuuurdy tired.

The last day, I was at Divan Orange allll night. I still hold the opinion that if you were a band, this is DEFINITELY a venue you want to play at. Great atmosphere. Great sound. Average priced beer…and a mix crowd ranging from super artsy pretentious folk to super smelly non showering people, oh, and hippies. Sometimes. I saw DVAS, Silly Kissers, and Cadence Weapon. I wanted to see CFCF but I was falling asleep! DVAS played this amazing retro club pop music. I felt like it was italo-disco of twenty years ago. CRAZY GOOD dance party. And Silly Kissers KICK SO MUCH ASS!!

—

Anyways, I’ve been meaning to do these reviews for MONTHS. I’m not kidding. And it’s just getting a bit silly now, don’t you think? I figure I might as well share the music, and if you like it, go and buy it! And go to the shows! And yada yada yada you know how this works. =)

After the jump for somewhat informative and very terse descriptions of AWESOME albums: Heyoka, Tipsy, Washed Out, Basement Jaxx. Sigh, I guess not as large of an update. I wanted to add TMDP, the Islands, the Flaming Lips, Raekwon, etc etc…but I am getting suuuuuper sleep and alas…now it is another four hours before I leave. ENJOY! COME BACK BC THIS WILL BE UPDATED AS SOON AS I CAN!

Discovered these guys from watching the Sopranos. I said hey, this sounds like a super cool song (“Cinnabar”). Since, I’ve checked a few of their albums and especially like this one. Genre: chill, ambient, down-tempo, experimental electronic.

Basement Jaxx – Scars (2009)

Gave this album so many listens it hurts. To be honest, Basement Jaxx will just never get back to the “Romeo” and “Good Luck” days. Still a great club and dance album. Sometimes housey. And the cameos on this album are pretty impressive and are tooooooootally worth it in the end, unlike other cameo showoff albums. Not their best, but these two songs below and a few others…make Scars pretty alright. That’ll do BJ, that’ll do.

The Falklands, picture courtesy of Myspace

Last week, I got an e-mail from an old friend from junior high. Mark Budd and I haven’t spoken in nearly 10 years, but I still vividly remember his awesome Chuck Taylors and Mad Bomber Society t-shirts.

From what I remember, Budd was a huge music junkie so it was no surprise to hear that he was a part of a band in Edmonton. That band is called The Falklands—and they’re pretty fantastic.

The poppy punk rockers recently released a 7″ record . “Stephanie” is the A-side and”Jeez Louise” is the B-side. They recorded it back in April, only a few months after forming.

Here are the two tracks, respectively:

Now you must be asking, “What’s up with your blog title?” You see, Budd and I went to the same junior high (and were in the same grade) with a couple famous musical whizzes you might recognize—Cadence Weapon, aka Rollie Pemberton, and Ten Second Epic’s Craig Spelliscy.

I think it’s kind of funny how the four of us ended up in the music industry. Coincidence? Or was there something in the water?

I’d dig up a class picture and post it here, but I’d rather not remember those days. My braces and glasses weren’t what I’d call flattering.

No real album artwork for this one. This picture will have to do. Running low on Canadian indie pop

No real album artwork for this one. This picture will have to do.

Running low on Canadian indie pop or indie rock albums, I decided to look at an album that I hadn’t listened to in its entirety. That is the album Dirtbike 1 from Canadian hip-hop artist Buck 65. That’s right. For once I’m actually reviewing a Canadian indie hip-hop artist.

As I finished listening, I wondered to myself: how am I going to go about reviewing this? On this album there was actually very little to talk about musically. There are no guitar riffs or amazing drum beats; just simply beats and, surprisingly, intelligent rhymes. Also, guest appearances by fellow Canadian rappers Moka Only and Cadence Weapon.

I knew that I wasn’t listening to a normal hip-hop album when the names Hieronymous Bosch and Rousseau are mentioned. Yes, thank goodness, there was no mention of drugs or guns, and just a very minor reference to women. Well, call it minor if you wish, I don’t know, you be the judge on that one.

So what do I actually think about the album? It has its strong points, and it has its flaws.

While this won’t negatively affect the review I do wish the album could have been seperated into tracks. The whole offering is one hour and three minutes in length and I lost count of the number of songs after four. Not only that but I couldn’t find any track listings on Buck 65’s websites either.

The strength of this album is definitely its intelligence. Like fellow Canadian rapper K-oS, Buck 65 does not rap about the subject matter of 50 Cent and Eminem’s songs. While I did have trouble figuring out the messages of most if not all of his songs, his rhymes were quite varied and didn’t use any really offensive words. Another bonus!

Where I saw some flaws were partly with the flow of the album. The third song (or so I counted) talked about a woman having legs like a shotgun (complete with shotgun loading noises, no less) followed directly by a song about a very messed up urban family. Wait, what?

Also, I was a little disappointed by the album’s lack of music. Many of the beats faded into the background over Buck’s rapping. Not only that but there was a 2-minute intro telling me that I was listening to Buck 65. I kind of knew that already. I can’t tell if that’s self-indulgence or if it’s just supposed to be a message to get through to my head. Who knows, it kind of bugged me.

This album is (most likely) just a taste of what’s to come. I’m confident that Dirtbike 2 and 3 (when I get around to reviewing them) should be better. Not that this album is bad, it’s definitely worth a listen for hip-hop fans. For me, it wasn’t totally enough to win me over but still impressive.

Top Tracks: If I had a track listing I could list them maybe

Remember? Yeah, good times.

Remember how I ‘couldn’t say’ how I felt about the music at the time? Yeah, total dodge. I believe the City of Edmonton should immediately adopt all 7 tracks as situation-specific city anthems: Amy van Keeken’s for hockey games, Colleen Brown’s for when we give Heart the key to the city, everyone could stand and sing Nik Kozub’s before gigs get underway, and Cadence Weapon’s before settling in for a night/day/afternoon/week/month/year spent on the couch in front of the TV/computer/videogame system. Ted Wright’s song should be this summer’s go-to song for driving around, playing your stereo too loud.

Yesterday, Edmonton became a world leader, by appointing hip hop artist Roland Pemberton, better known as Cadence Weapon, as their third Poet Laureate. Walt Whitman wrote, the “proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it.” Today we have seen that rarest of cases. Edmonton deserves a head-bob for forward thinking.

I am not from E-Ville, nor have I been hip for over a decade, so in order to catch up, I am streaming bits of beats from Cadence through my local café’s dodgy wireless as I write. Powerful and humorous lyrics with ample E-Town references are set to crunchy Eurotech beats. It’s hard to properly describe, but worth a listen, so jump to his MySpace page.

It is exciting that the arts “establishment” has recognized a very different kind of poet to be its literary ambassador. Because the form combines underground identity, beat-driven accessibility, and contemporary messages, it is an unknown quantity amongst its newfound peers. Edmonton has recognized the relevance of a medium through which the masses receive their everyday rhyme.

A true son of the city, Pemberton upholds his family’s tradition of contributing to Edmonton’s culture. His granddad, Rollie Miles was a star Eskimo running back, and his father T.E.D.D.Y. was a seminal ’80’s hip-hop DJ at CJSR.

It is our loss that Canadian poetry, the kind we typically think of as laureate material, has a reputation for being stodgy or inaccessible; the laureate label has an inadvertent curatorial effect, as if to say it is officially… “Ye be Olde.” I’ve read the works of Pemberton’s predecessors and found them to be engaging, and intelligent. However great they are though, they are not the most accepted and far-reaching poetry of right now, that is, they are not Hip Hop. The verse pounding into the masses through 4/4 meter is so ubiquitous that it is rarely regarded as poetry, but it’s just not your dad’s poetry.

By selecting this talented artist to represent the city, Edmonton has brought diversity to its Canon, recognizing that art is most vital as when it lives in the common vernacular. Epics, elegies and contemporary written works are indispensable; they contain linguistically innovation and cultural history. But we should remember, that the old Bard was once a clever Young Turk with a subversive streak, yet was in eloquent parlance with his society, in all its stratification.

I think Edmonton’s answer to that question is a resounding YES. But it’s definitely a question worth posing.

Cadence Weapon performs at the 2008 Wolfe Island Music Fest.

Don’t get me wrong: when I heard that Cadence Weapon–who I saw perform at least summer’s Wolfe Island Music Fest–had been named poet laureate in Edmonton, AB, it took me a minute to digest the information. That might have been because it was early in the morning. Or, it could have been because I had no idea that cities have poet laureates. (Did you?) Regardless, I was shocked.

Even after a year studying modern American poetry, which is filled with some pretty ballin’ folk, I had to think for a moment about whether rap and poetry can be considered the same thing. The reason, I think, is that age-old question of hierarchy. Just like Hemingway is a little higher on the literary ladder than, say, Rowling, the term ‘poetry’ has a much more ‘literary’ connotation than does ‘rap.’

Rap is gangsta; it’s straight off da hook. (And whatnot.) Poetry is, as one particularly poet-like poet would say, the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.

But wait a minute: isn’t rap spontaneous? Doesn’t it involve powerful feelings? And I don’t know where and when Cadence (a.k.a Roland Pemberton) does his writing, but there’s a fair chance it involves tranquility and emotion. Feel me?

There’s also the performance aspect to consider. In a live discussion on the Globe and Mail’s website, one reader asked Cadence Weapon if his poetry, or music, or whatever you want to call it, will be published in book format. Quite a few influential poets over the years have been known–and lauded–for the performance aspect of their work. Performance can really only add to poetry–the emotion is transferred from the page to the stage, making it just a little bit more real.

Cadence Weapon seems to be using his new role to stand up not only for poetry, but for the arts community as a whole. As he said elsewhere in the Globe conversation:

i think edmonton’s art scene is important because it represents a cultural history that is as of now largely unknown or untold. the visual art occasionally represents the storied past in a literal sense of the characters chosen (first nations imagery, fur trade work by smokey, for instance). i feel like adversity is necessary to create good art and edmonton is a place where you have to fight to live sometimes. i want our story to get told.

Even if you reject the idea that he’s “literary,” you can’t deny that this rapper is more articulate than some. I’m not a huge rap fan, but I can certainly respect those artists who do more than rhyme off sexist lines and throw a few booty-shakers into blinged-out music videos–those artists you might call poetic.

I think Edmonton’s new poet laureate is one of those.

ok this is going to be the first time I listen to this as well, which isn’t normal practice…

Nick: it’s not

…but my brain is……..I just can’t really think of what else to do today.

and it’s by who again?

Super Extra Bonus Party

wow, what a terrible name.

their last album won the Choice Music Prize.

which is…..?

well, it awards the most innovative and forward thinking Irish album of a certain year, rather than caring about sales or anything like that.

ok

{Track 4 – Thin Air feat. Mr Lif}

is that called orchestral rap?

probably not.

it’s quite imaginative but despite that, it doesn’t manage to become interesting.

do you know what I mean?

a lot of variation, a lot of……ehm.

it just doesn’t become compelling does it?

I don’t know if they want if to become compelling or not though.

who wouldn’t want their music to be compelling?

well some people just want to create an atmosphere don’t they?

point taken.

{Track 6 – Comets feat. Heathers}

oh this is something new.

that one was very good.

the girls voices really bring a whole new dimension to it.

because also, they ehm…..

{Track 7 – Eamonn feat. May Kay}

this is a different girl now?

yep.

well this is better as well, there’s more structure when the girls are involved.

{Track 8 -Do Incio Ao Fim feat. Rodrigo Teles}

it’s the old problem isn’t it?

they repeat something ad nauseum and I still can’t understand it.

sowetto shark?

it’s the way he started?

it’s significant isn’t it?

what is?

the fact they’d repeat it throughout yet no one can understand it.

I’m going back on what I said, it is interesting.

{Track 9 -Tea With Lord Haw Haw feat. Captain Moonlight & White Noise}

super human master race?

yeah, they’re massive Nazi’s, did I not say that?

ARE THEY!?!?!?!

no, I’m kidding.

oh haha ok, thank god.

well they could be.

the only thing it doesn’t do, I think, is it doesn’t hang together as an album.

it’s like someone assembled all his favorite songs onto one CD.

they don’t all come from the same part of the forest, as they say.

I’ve never heard anyone except you say that.

you’ve never heard that?!?

it’s not my fault that you’re terribly uneducated.

if I *was* terribly uneducated it *would* be your fault.

hahaha good point, well no, I could have sent you to a very good school and you could’ve just not paid any attention.

actually that’s exactly what did happen!

haha maybe you could ask our visitors if they know the phrase?

who? oh the people who read the site?

well, you just did.

I think they should’ve been more discerning, some of this, especially the beginning is quite boring.

I’d like to see them live, do they play, have you seen them?

yep, I saw them at Hard Working Class Heroes, the sound was really bad so I left after a few minutes, seemed to be having a lot of fun though.

I’m not sure if the latter half of the album is better or if I just had to get used to them.

Gonna agree with Nick here, some of it’s pretty bleh, other bits, especially the track with Heathers, are really great but I’d say you’d be hard pressed to find someone outside of the band who thinks every track is aces.

They’re having a launch party this Friday in Andrew’s Lane, full details on their website.

Super Extra Bonus Party - ALT*

This Friday sees the Boners return to Andrew’s Lane Theatre to launch their second album ‘Night Horses’. The last time I saw them was in the same venue last October when they launched the remix version of their debut album ‘Appetite For Reconstruction’ with a fantastic all-star line up gig including R.S.A.G., The Vinny Club and Nouveau Noise. Having spent much of 2007/8 seeing SEBP live, that’s a long time to not see them. I’m hoping this gig will be just as much fun – even if it doesn’t have the same extensively brilliant line-up [EDIT: Full deadly line-up from Nialler in the comments below], they will have support from the Rubberbandits. We went to see them back in March and it was excellent. Rumour has it they’ll also be playing with the Warlords of Pez in the Twisted Pepper soon.

Anyway, the task at hand, the difficult second album. I really liked the self-titled debut and, as I said, really enjoyed seeing them play those songs live. Their live shows, from the first album launch in Voodoo to the Electric Picnic appearances, are always hugely energetic and they never fail to get the crowd going. Of course, for everyone who goes along and has a great time at their gigs, there’s someone who thinks they’re complete gimmicky rubbish. Now a lot of this is just typical Dublin, the usual backlash and begrudgery. Nobody seemed to slate them until they won the Choice Music Prize in ‘08. Maybe it’s just a load of angry bookies…

MP3: Super Extra Bonus Party – Radar (feat. Cadence Weapon) – [Buy]

Here’s a song from the album, which is officially released on Friday but can also be picked up at eMusic right now. I first heard this song when the boys played with Cadence Weapon in the Button Factory early last summer. Even as a rough, live first listen I was really impressed by the song and it has only improved since then. The rest of the album features a multitude of collaborations with people like Heathers, Captain Moonlight and MayKay from Fight Like Apes. Much to look forward to then both onstage and on record this Friday. More photos from the last ALT* gig after the jump.

From the way this making the video looks it will be a great music video. I hope that the music video lives up to the way it looks in this video. Seeing Cadence Weapon mouthing the tenacious line “we do acid” with fire shooting up behind him is exactly the way it should be presented in the video. Hopefully Shout Out Out Out Out will throw an east coast Canada tour date on their schedule and make me a happy boy because they are one band I’d love to check out this summer.

Bet all you haters didn’t see this one coming! Ahah.

This is a small and very humble experience I’ve been working on since last week…I’ve been mixing music and making very shitty beats ever since I started getting into hip-hop, but this time I wanted to try something more serious and share it with everyone.

So this is the first volume of the future sounds mixtapes.

This specific volumes will be more focused on danceable beats and unstructured remixing, where I do some mood swings, rhythm changes, and throw in stuff for both the fellas and the ladies. And don’t be fooled around by other online mixtapes…when I say mixtape it means it was recorded in a single take, and I individually remixed every track (and no, playing solely with highs and lows doesn’t count as remixing). Be aware, this is no podcast.

Play time: 18:06 minutes.

Track list:

Kid Sister – Pro Nails (Bag Raiders Remix)
Shuttle – Rotten Guts (ft. Cadence Weapon)
Santigold – Shove It (Three 6 Mafia Remix ft. Project Pat)
Death To The Throne – New M.I.A. Song (Remix)
Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow (Club Version) – be on the lookout for this track…100% dancefloor banger.
Wu-Tang Clan – Stomp (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

DOWNLOAD

Don’t be too harsh on it, it’s not perfect or very clean…it’s just a small experience meant to lighten up this upcoming weekend. More volumes and different styles coming soon.

This happened around this same time last year, too, except this year I drove by him in a car, while last time I was on my bike. I don’t think there’s anyone in Edmonton I’m happier to see shoveling their walk.

I’ve been meaning to post on Cadence Weapon’s newest mixtape Separation Anxiety for awhile but just never got around to it! I’ve always liked his flow on the tracks, and the beats. He’s got some indie connections, has toured with people like Final Fantasy and has remixed Ciara, Shout Out Out Out Out and more. You can download Separation Anxiety a la Radiohead model, pay what you want (or don’t pay at all). It’s definitely worth it.
