My friend Zach and I had an awesome exchange on gchat about the Chilean students, who were visiting Tufts as part of the wrap-up of the summer’s Joint Research Project, before they went down with the ALLIES students to the conference at the USNA.

Zach: I saw the Chileans the other day!!

Me: Oh? And how’d you know that they were the Chileans?

Zach: Because the three of them were standing in a row, all with their cameras out, taking pictures of a squirrel.

Other highlights from the Chileans’ visit:

Left to right: Cristopher, me, Ignacio, and Paula at Starbucks in Kendall Square. They might have them all over the world, but I guess it’s not the same as being in one in the US of A.

So, when you stop and think about it a lot has happened in the past 25 years. Those of us at Yamaha are grateful to all those individuals who have come before us, paving the way for our current success.

If you stop and look back at the number of percussion products Yamaha has introduced, launched, upgraded and supported since 1984, the list becomes quite long. The cool thing is, a lot more neat stuff is coming in the very near future. You’ll see some of these new things at PASIC this year. I won’t spill the beans now. You’ll have to stop on by our booth if you can. Let us know what you think.

Arrest of cadet sparks disturbance

Charleston police respond to ‘distressed call’ on campus

By Andy Paras

The Post and Courier

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

A group of Citadel cadets threw bottles, trash cans and chairs and fought one another Sunday night during an on-campus melee that started shortly after campus police arrested a cadet for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Scared and outnumbered, adult supervisors inside the Watts Barracks made a “distressed call” to Citadel public safety officers shortly before 11 p.m. because cadets refused to return to their rooms, according to a public safety incident report. One supervisor was struck by a water balloon.

Authorities said the situation came under control soon after Charleston police officers responded to the scene. Police did not arrest anyone in connection with the disturbance.

Citadel officials are investigating the incident. Cadets who participated in “unacceptable behavior” will be held accountable, said L. Jeffrey Perez, vice president for external affairs.

Police said the incident began about 10:50 p.m. when a public safety officer saw a cadet nearly fall while standing in the bed of a moving pickup truck.

The 20-year-old, who appeared to be intoxicated, cursed at the officer and told him he was helping another cadet who was passed out in the bed of the truck, according to an incident report.

The cadet refused to get out of the pickup and then jumped out when the officer attempted to grab him. The officer punched the cadet in the face in self-defense when he saw the cadet rear back with a fist, the report states. The blow allowed the officer to back away from the cadet, who finally complied with the officer’s orders at the urging of another cadet.

The cadet continued to curse and resist officers after he was cuffed and taken to the station, requiring two officers to watch him, the report states.

Public safety officers charged Bryan E. Crosson with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was released from the Charleston County jail Monday morning on his own recognizance.

Police said cadets in the Watts Barracks, one of five on campus, started screaming and throwing objects within minutes of the arrest.

One of the supervisors said he called public safety officers because he was concerned for the safety of the cadets, himself and other adult supervisors. Officers directed one of the supervisors to take cover from flying objects, a report states.

Perez said the situation was under control by 11:20 p.m.

“We do not know at this time exactly how many cadets were involved in the incident, but these actions were not taken by all, and not even most cadets in Watts Barracks,” he said.

The incident was the second time that evening that Charleston police were called to help with unruly cadets.

Police officers cited nine cadets with disorderly conduct about 7:45 p.m. Sunday in front of The Anchorage Inn at 26 Vendue Range.

Witnesses told officers that a large group of cadets was running up and down the block punching parked cars and screaming profanities, according to a Charleston police incident report. One of the men was taken to jail. The others were issued citations.

You may have heard about incidents on Sunday that were embarrassing to The Citadel and do not represent the core values of our institution.

Seniors received their rings last Friday. In recent years, events associated with the ring presentation have been added that highlight this important moment in The Citadel Experience. There is a Senior Dinner on Thursday, ring presentation on Friday, ring ceremony and “hop” on Friday evening, and a parade Saturday morning. Throughout the weekend there were also “traditional” company parties that over a number of years have become more prevalent. We can all appreciate the exuberance seniors felt upon receiving their rings and during the celebrations, but that does not condone behavior unbecoming of a cadet.

Sunday afternoon a number of cadets who had rented a bar downtown made a spectacle of themselves on the street causing a neighboring hotel to call the Charleston Police Department (CPD). While only one was arrested, and several others received warning citations, the incident was very public and has brought considerable negative attention to The Citadel.

With the exception of a few special waivers, all cadets had been ordered back to quarters on Sunday by 1950. A number of cadets in Watts Barracks ignored that order and returned a few minutes before 2300 – many of them returned under the influence of alcohol which clouded their judgment. One cadet in particular had to be subdued by a Citadel Public Safety officer. His arrest precipitated a reaction in Watts Barracks. The cadets who returned late and others proceeded to engage in unacceptable behavior, including throwing trash cans and other items into the quad, along with much yelling and screaming.

We are investigating how many cadets were involved in the incident, but staff on the scene have reported these actions were not taken by all, and not even most, cadets in Watts Barracks. Nevertheless the disturbance was enough to warrant the night officer in charge to request support from Citadel Public Safety officers who in turn requested support from the Charleston Police Department.

Our public safety officers did not take such action lightly. Unlike when you may have attended The Citadel, public safety officers today are Citadel employees and graduates of the State Police Academy. They are state-certified with the same powers as South Carolina state police officers. They are trained to respond appropriately to such situations, and concluded assistance from CPD was warranted. By the time CPD arrived, cadet leadership and college staff had begun getting cadets back into their rooms, and the presence of CPD supported this effort. The incident was over by about 2320. An ongoing investigation to identify the cadets who participated in the disturbance is being conducted by the Commandant’s Office, with the assistance of the ranking cadets who aided in restoring order, the coordinating officer-in-charge, Citadel Public Safety and Charleston Police Department officers who were on the scene.

What happened in Watts Barracks also has generated considerable media interest, but what is lost in the coverage of both incidents is that the vast majority of our cadets behaved well. Moreover, cadets in four other barracks complied with the guidance they received and acquitted themselves appropriately.

Though what happened downtown and in Watts Barracks were isolated incidents involving a handful of cadets, they are not acceptable and tarnish our institution and its alumni. I will not tolerate this type of behavior. We are aggressively investigating, and cadets found to have engaged in unacceptable behavior will be held accountable in a manner fitting with the seriousness of the matter and in accordance with college rules and regulations regarding discipline.

I and senior staff also hold ourselves responsible for ensuring The Citadel will be a source of pride to our alumni. Our after action reviews will improve future responses by campus officials. In particular our commandant, Col Leo Mercado USMC (ret.), holds himself personally accountable and responsible for the behavior and conduct of cadets both on and off-campus. I have directed him to investigate these incidents and report back to me with the results, recommendations, and most importantly, a plan to preclude similar occurrences in the future.

Again, I want to acknowledge all the cadets who behaved well and were a credit to The Citadel. With a few unfortunate exceptions, the Class of 2010 understands they represent not only themselves but all Citadel alumni because they “wear the ring.”

As always, I thank you for your loyal and steadfast support of The Citadel.

Blue Angel Gallery It’s been five months since I was on the monthly art crawl on James Street

Blue Angel Gallery

It’s been five months since I was on the monthly art crawl on James Street North here in Hamilton. Things are changing on the street at the same accelerated rate that I have witnessed over the last twenty years in Costa Rica. Down there, if I let a couple years pass before returning to a beach or town that has caught the eye of foreigners and developers, there will be no end to the new restaurants, hotels and attractions that have sprouted up in my absence.

Victoria and Deborah Pearce gallery

I’m now watching this same change coming to James Street North. A few months means there will be a lot of new entrepreneurs – artists, shop owners, restauranteurs – taking a shot at being part of the big wave of excitement, taking advantage of what will probably be a great investment in their own future as well as in the health of the city around them. I suspect that the price of the old buildings right on James is increasing as the availability is decreasing, and some of the new businesses are around the corner or one block further down from the main part of the bustle. That just means that the neighbourhood grows a little longer and wider.

Hotel Hamilton

The James Street North Art Crawl has been building its head of steam over about three years (I’ve written about it before – see post: The James Street North Art Crawl.) Now the good folk at Sonic Unyon and other neighbourhood businesses got the idea to blow a little harder and created the SUPER Art Crawl. Part of the idea was to keep bringing new people into this part of the downtown of Hamilton, the urban core having been under attack from within and without for years.

It is common to hear people complain about Hamilton in general and its downtown specifically. The city council has been either hopelessly inept or simply without a modern intelligent vision that will work in rejuvenating the urban core. Instead of bringing life back into the old buildings they are left to partially fall down so that they can then be condemned and torn down. Eventually the brick-strewn empty lot might be replaced by a shiny, new building. This might satisfy the needs of developers but doesn’t do much for the soul of the city.

What has happened on James, which is an artery connecting what should be the heart of the city at King and James to the great new waterfront, has happened because of the grassroots -creative believers who have worked hard to bring art, music, buzz and business to the street – while using the grand ol’ buildings. Because of them, new blood has joined with the traditional Portuguese cafes and Italian businesses and now the street feels diverse and lively and joyful.

I arrived back in the city nine years ago, just in time to witness this change. The waterfront development and the James Street scene is what makes me happy to be here (besides friends, local music and proximity to airport.) I talk to people in Burlington and surrounding areas, and they still talk about the downtown of the Hamilton like it is ground-zero for the plague. But I’ve had many folks come from afar – the northern bush, the US, Costa Rica, England, Guelph, even, gasp, Toronto – who have been duly impressed by what is going on in downtown Hamilton. They want to come back. Now folks are telling me that they are reading about this rejuvenation in national newspapers and on blogs (hi there) and so it would appear that the word is truly spreading.

Jeremy Fisher

With this in mind, the Super Art Crawl was developed. The organizers soon got Bob Bratina, our local town councillor, on board and he helped get a portion of the street shut down for the day so that tents and stages could be erected for the live music and vendors who would come out to play at night. Then one of the local music festivals – the C&C Music Festival that originated with Mohawk College and McMaster University’s radio stations – joined in. All of a sudden (and according to what I’ve read, the planning happened very quickly), there was a full roster of local musicians along with well-known national bands, playing on three outdoor stages as well as in some of the galleries and local bars, as well as the usual art show openings – all for free.

My friend Lynda, who has done a crawl or two with me before, came down from Guelph, bringing her friend Anne, who decided to celebrate her birthday with us here in the Hammer even though she is more apt to head to Toronto for her cultural fixes. She went away with a huge appreciation for the steel city, her faith in grassroot collaboration renewed. She loved the gritty energy, the versatility, the diversity that she witnessed. She particularly commented on how many “normal” people there were, middle-age suburbanites, mingling with young black leather piercites or graying hippiesh artists. I know she’ll be back as, try though we might, we only saw a portion of what is available on the street and, as I explained, it will all be different next month.

The gods put the Hammerheads to the test for this mid-October outdoor event, and the cold rain started falling early in the day. Such a shame as the days before and since have been spectacularly sunny. I’m sure that the gang working out on the street that day assembling stages and tents must have been pissed, but the good news is that the crowds still came. Surely not as many as would have on a starry starry night, but enough to fill the galleries to shoulder-rubbing room, while a sea of umbrellas bobbed up and down the street and a look in some of the restaurants and bars confirmed that many tables were full.

Where can you simultaneously watch cadets doing their formations in the armoury, electronic magicians playing with their instruments on the pulpit of an Anglican cathedral, and buy fresh local organic vegetables while one of the hot new bands in the land performs behind you and original art adorns every other storefront? Why, in the Hammer - may not be the most obvious answer, but it is the correct one!

Backyard Harvest

Marble Index

A big applause for John Ellison, the composer of Some Kind of Wonderful (made famous and paying him royalties by Grand Funk Railroad.) I met him and his drummer Dean last year at the Hamilton Music Awards and they were out playing on one of the stages on Friday night. He announced that he would be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Hammies. I’ve worked backstage for the last four years at the awards but the date has been moved to December 3-6 weekend, and I have to return to Costa Rica before that. I wanted to say congratulations to this talented, gracious and eloquent man who lives locally but has written and performed lots of music all over the world. Even if that wonderful song was his only composition, with it he did his part to put some musical joy on the earth.

Hidden Cameras and raised umbrellas

And more applause to all the organizers, musicians, volunteers, shop owners, artists and everyone who grabbed their umbrella and came out to play in the rain…the Hammer continues to make one proud.

My life for the past ten months has been (willingly) given over to the ALLIES Joint Research Project

My life for the past ten months has been (willingly) given over to the ALLIES Joint Research Project (JRP) to Chile, where 4 Tufts students, along with 2 West Point cadets and 2 Naval Academy midshipmen, studied civil-military relations post-military coup and transition to democracy.

I was first involved in every aspect of planning the trip, then living it and carrying out the research, and now putting together our final paper/policy recommendations – which we’re unfortunately way behind on. So for the past few weeks, almost every free moment I’ve had has been dedicated to writing, editing, and rewriting.

Tonight, Taylor, also from Tufts and also on the trip, and I had a virtual writing and editing sess, which made us realize that we still disagree on a lot of key points. What do “positive civil-military relations” mean, really? Is it more about civilian control and subjugation of the military (as Taylor argues) or mutual trust and cooperation (as I believe)? What IS the military’s proper role in a modern society? Should they be “back in the barracks” and out of sight and mind, or should they play active participatory roles in policy discussions (if not determinations)?

I love that at Tufts, I’m encouraged to explore these questions, and that I’m trusted enough to travel to Latin America and ask them – of the former army commander-in-chief, of current Congressmen and women, of presidential candidates.

I just wish that I had some clearer answers.

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can’t you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

About a month ago my oldest son brought home a blue piece of paper. On it was an invitation to join the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. For the first time I can remember he was really excited.

I spent probably a week bringing up all the cons, so that he understand it was not a one day in one day out decision. Still he wanted to do it and I could not in good conscience say no. So off he went. Two weeks in and he seems to be enjoying himself and looks like he will commit to the year which he would stay in as his mother wanted him to promise.

So his decision brought back a flood of memories for me.

About 1981 a friend of mine convinced me that entering the Army Cadets would be a good idea. I at the time was hugely excited about all things military so I was interested. For about a year I stayed in until the friend and I did not stay solid friends.

However, when we moved to Toronto at sixteen I had decided I wanted to go into Sea Cadets, I was in love with ships at this point. As it turned out my Cadet branch was named after one of our ancient submarines. I liked Sea Cadets but getting motivated for making weekly meetings and other projects during the summer was just not something I really thought I could keep up with in my last years of school.

Along with that I found out you needed a bachelors degree or be qualified through my grades to go into the military as an officer or at least an officer candidate.

I could not at the time see the need for school and I felt that I was never going to get into the Armed Forces, so I gave up on the idea.

Yes when I was sixteen and seventeen I wanted to command a submarine crew.

Thanks to that background of love for the military I was introduced to history and fell deeply in love.

Now years later, many years later, I have a Bachelors. I am slightly old and out of shape but I was curious to see what I would need if I was to contemplate going into the military. I figured, laughing to myself, I would be punted rather quickly out the door of any recruiting office.

So with that in mind I contacted the Canadian Armed Forces filling out some paperwork for the Navy and marched down to the recruiting office to see what I would need and whether at 40 I was out of my midlife crisis gourd.

Well, they said to me they would take someone up to 55 years old. As well that I would be directly commissioned as a sub Lieutenant if I made it through the ten weeks of basic training.

Funnier still was my wife’s reaction, she said it was up to me and that she felt she could handle the difficult life due to speaking with other military wives.

So after a bit of a lark I am left with a fairly serious life changing decision. One that I would never remotely considered for the last 22 years. With no steady job the idea of having real work and a sense of earning something like a commission makes an intriguing idea. I am dubious I would survive basic as of this moment. In honest fact I think I would die trying to run a mile, let alone five.

Anyways, just figured I would blog about this because in a way it just seems like a way to gather some of my thoughts. Of course this may all change next week depending on what happens in another phase of my life. As I am slowly being sucked back into my old political life. If anything comes of that I will probably set this aside as a bit of midlife fun.

Well cadets tonight was one of those very uneventful nights but it was fun so that’s all that matters. We talked about school and what we liked and didn’t like. And Roxanne was there so that’s always fun. We talked about our goals and then we had a Bop It comepetition. It was fun, I lost. I got like a score of like 5 and the high score was 100 wow that makes me feel so so great! I was the first one there and the last one to leave. I love it at the fire station it’s so great there. Well I just finished my Nicholas Spark’s book The Lucky One and at first I wanted to rip the book in half when I read the last chapter but then I read the epilogue and that is key in this book. It made it all better. I’m not gonna say what happened cause I DON”T WANT TO SPOIL IT!!!!
