Niccolo Rising

For some reason this year, I’ve had an insatiable desire for historical fiction. I’ve always loved the genre, ever since I was a school reader. But the devil they say, is in the detail, and it’s the more intellectual detail I love, especially from writers of the calibre of the late and most wonderfully great Dorothy Dunnett and the most current and thoroughly popular Phillipa Gregory. I have also enjoyed Sharon Penman, SJA Turney and Posie Graeme Evans amongst many others. Eleanor Of Aquitaine and Henry I sit comfortably with Caesar, with Claes van der Poele and with Francis Crawford of Lymond. Apart from the unique plots, the height and breadth of research is what thrills me. I try and soak up just a little bit more information each time I open the books.

The Game of Kings

With Dorothy Dunnett, it becomes an exercise in fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe, especially if I arm myself with the two volume DD Companions. I studied fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe at university many years ago and swear if I had access to the wonderful hist.fict novels of today I would have learned even more than I did by listening to fusty, dusty lecturers and prattling, rattling tutors. In my novels I hear the characters of history speak and interact and suddenly things that I learned about in the past have a resonance that thunders. SJA Turney did this for me with Marius’s Mules which I’ve mentioned in an earlier blog. I studied Ancient Civs in first year uni and failed miserably because the lecturer was so jaw-droppingly boring. He inspired nothing! But if I’d had someone like Fronto to lead me through Caesar’s campaigns in Middle Europe, then I would’ve remembered everything! This guy has the driest wit and a campaign mind that puts even Caesar’s back in his box.

I think I may have been born in the wrong era. I fancy riding side-saddle on a palfrey or sitting in a solar embroidering, even being a lady scribe and creating illuminated manuscripts (probably not politically correct at the time) or a troubadour (and yes, there were lady troubadours).

Duc de Berry's Book of Hours

The lack of creature comforts is momentarily forgotten as I sweep down a marble stair in a silk gown that whispers as I move. Over my eyes I have a mask decorated with ivory feathers and pearls and as I move through the doors to the waiting gondola, darkly-cloaked individuals step out of the way. Ah yes, this year I’ve had an insatiable desire for hist.fict.

And just like that, we’re in a serious countdown to the festive season.
And just why are we having a holiday on the 25th? Well… it’s the birthday of our lord and saviour.

Let’s have a gander at him, shall we?
He was a saviour, sent to earth to live as a mortal, through whom it was possible for sinners to be reborn into immortal life. He died for our sins, but came back to life the following Sunday. He was born of a virgin on December the 25th in a manger or perhaps a cave, attended by shepherds, and become known as the Light of the World. He had twelve disciples with whom he shared a last meal before dying. His devotees symbolically consumed the flesh and blood of him. He was worshiped on Sundays, he was often depicted with a halo around his head. His followers gave each other gifts on December the 25th. The leader of his religion was called a Papa, and their headquarters was on Vatican Hill, which was in Rome.

I am speaking, of course, about Mithras. Who were YOU thinking of?
(And before any fundies get upset, it really is tough luck… Mithras predated Jesus by some 600 years. Go look it up)

So… only 22 days until MithrasDay!

*

So there have been a few questions as to why there were no complaints about the SA trip. Alluded one friend… “It’s not like you not to bitch.” Nice to be predictable. Fair enough… I’ve had a few weeks to get my thoughts on the matter together…

The wife and I went to the Traffic Department in East London while were back home. The idea was to get our Driver’s licenses reissued so that we could exchange them for a Taiwanese driver’s. Saves me having to do the test again.. in Chinese. For those who don’t know, the Traffic Dept is in the really shitty side of town… and given that it is a Buffalo City municipal dominion, is of course a run-down dump. (Think 5 counters, two of which are manned. Think four airconditioners visible, with only two running, these both in areas with open doors. You’d think with the electricity crisis in South Africa, the government would be cutting back. Think insane queues, think of a cleaning roster that appears to function once a month. A shithole.)
We knew that it would be an exercise in patience, we knew that it would be an object lesson of frustration management. We knew it. And still they won.
First Queue (Day One) – Assume position just inside the door. In the time we waited, the queue extended out onto the paving. Disinterested chica at the front is slapping down forms, and issuing instructions in a bored monotone. Finally get to the front. State our cases. Take not of monotoned costs and form instructions.
Second Queue (Day One) – We didn’t bring pens, and so had to rub shoulders at the pen-trough… finally scratching our details onto the forms with a dying pen that may have been an institution of the ‘previous regime’.
Third Queue (Day One) – We left the pen-trough and headed out for our mandatory eye tests. Took positions 11 and 12 respectively. Seat-shifted for almost an hour to get to the front of the queue. Once we were on the final row of chairs, we could see into the eye-testing facility. Three testing stations. One in use. Watched in irritation as at least 5 people cut ahead on the queue. Vowed vengeance. Finally get to the front, and wander over to the eye-dude before he calls ‘Next’. He’s irritated. I’ve moved without his permission. I shrug and sit down. He fixes me with a steely gaze. I drag his eye machine over to me. He calls out the questions, I read the answers. Finger-printed. Done. Head off to Queue Four while the wife takes the test. Take a look at my results. I just passed. JUST. And I was wearing my glasses for the test. (With an up to date prescription)
Fourth Queue (Day One) – This queue isn’t all that bad… and I land up letting people jump ahead of me while I wait for the wife. She arrives with crap news. She failed the test. Completely. Even with her glasses, she failed it outright. License refused. She is given a form that she can take to a regular optometrist for a more involved eye test. She is understandably upset, the deterioration of her eyes to the point where she is not fit to drive is not to be taken lightly. I pay for my license, and get told the news. 6 to 8 weeks. SIX to EIGHT weeks. For them to REPRINT and LAMINATE a card. (In Taiwan, this is done while you wait… 5 mins tops.) I ask for a proxy form… so that my In-laws can pick up the card for me. They no longer have it. It is now required that you make a letter of permission out to the person in question, and then have it authorised by the cops.

We leave.

(Day Two)
The wife takes herself off to an optometrist… willing to pay the consultation fee to get the test over and done with. Almost R300 was the quote she received. (NT$ 1500) She goes. Comes back with a complete pass. And the optometrist didn’t charge her. Why?
The optometrist receives so many referrals from the Traffic Dept that have nothing wrong with their eyes that they are no longer charging for it. Given that the optometrist is just ONE of the optometrists in the city, and is nowhere near the Traffic Dept geographically, it is a sad commentary on the accuracy of the test. Later of course, we were to be told that the guy was probably hoping for a bribe… and that a note or two passed his way would have solved the problem. (We’ve been out of SA for too long, I didn’t even think about it.)

Queue One (Day Three) – Back to the Traffic Department. This time, the wife joins Queue One, while I go and hold a place in Queue Two. Now, before you think that that is a little underhanded, consider that in certain government institutions in South Africa, the queues are bad enough that people make MONEY being queue holders for impatient people. As it was, there were three of us placeholders in the queue… and a very short queue. Which led to an awkward moment when we were all trying to indicate that the others could cut ahead.

Queue Two (Day Three) – After establishing that everyone in the queue was in fact not interested in actually being served, I stood about aimlessly. The wife was along shortly, having presented her optometrist test and done her fingerprinting. Jumping to the head of the queue, we paid our bit and left.

Three visits to places we didn’t want to go. The first for almost 2 hours, the second for 30 minutes and the third for almost an hour. Now… without being a total prick about things… what the hell is wrong with the Traffic Dept that they need to do SO MANY queues for what is essentially a standard service?
Why is it that you need to queue in one room, then another, then back to the first room? Haven’t they heard of bottle-necks? Is it just plain stupidity that keeps them from seeing the clashes between the various queues as they run out of space and people must move onto the paving? Are they so oblivious as to notice that when it RAINS, half of their clientele get wet?

The answer is simply that they couldn’t give two shits about the people in their queues. And because the service is monopolised by various Govt agencies, there is no reason for them to give a shit. After all, if you don’t like it.. fuck off. Which is what the Minister of the Interior announce to the white liberal community of South Africa after they complained about the sheer debacle that the SA government is becoming.

For the first time I came away from SA not actually angry. I was saddened. It is truly the most beautiful country I have ever seen. Without even trying. And in spite of governmental neglect.

Back to the land of the present.

After the disintegration of my previous scooter, it was required that I buy another bike on our return to Taiwan. I decided to go for something simple. Something reliable. And I did. Presenting the Kymco Jockey. Of course, my bike is nothing like those on the Kymco homepage. Mine is more like this.

It is a butt ugly but very preppy scooter. And looking about the streets of Kaohsiung, they appear to last forever… which is precisely what I want. A to B with a minimum of fuss. I actually can’t find pictures of it online, so I am going to have to take a photo of the bike myself to show you. I warn you though… seriously ugly bike.

As many of you know the wife and I started eating chicken and other birdlife again. Enter the Bayou restaurant… anyone who knows me knows that it’s my favourite eatery. Well. It’s like a menu reborn. Suddenly, I can actually eat most of the things they have on their menu. And I am happy to announce that I have found the best pizza. In the world. Ever. EVER. They have this Pizza called a Chicken Caesar Pizza…
Basically a normal pizza crust with a chicken topping and mozzarella cheese. On TOP of the pizza is a Caesar salad, so fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese and caesar dressing. I don’t like Anchovies, and I really don’t like Parmesan cheese. In spite of that, the pizza rocked. ROCKED. Those of you who live in Kaohsiung need to get off your asses and go eat one. Those of you that are planning visits to us in the future… well, guess what we’re having for dinner?

On a final note in the personal news bit… Facebook is getting dumped for 2010. Sad to say, I am sick to death with people “Facefishing” (Deliberately obscure references to bad things in the hope of entreating sympathy from the hordes. “Kevin just doesn’t know if he can take it anymore.” Strap on a pair Kevin!), inviting me to countless crap applications (I don’t want to join Farmville… the Mafia is not a viable form of entertainment for someone with more than two braincells… and NO, I’d rather not assuage my conscience by joining a FB group for deaf people… I’d rather continue donating cash to charities locally.) I’m tired of the Facesluts… (the people with 15 Billion “friends” that want me amongst that number.) and FINALLY…

You know… I never liked the Sims. I never got into the Tamagochi. I find Sim City and their ilk to be fussy, and more management than I like. Take a moment. Take a good look at your Facebook friends. How many of them are actually friends? How many of them are on that list simply because you accepted them once a long time ago, and now don’t have the balls to get rid of them? How many people’s problems are being aired in your general vicinity? How many people’s problems are you commenting on on a daily basis. Wouldn’t it be easier to get a pet? I did. He never posts frivolous updates. He never fishes for sympathy or makes oblique observations in a desperate bid to start conversations. When he wants attention, he comes over and makes it known.

2010. Facebook Free. 350 million time-slaves hooked on the website. How much time are you wasting?

Your TRUE story of the week:
A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for you tube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded: “Good luck with that one, pal”. So he posted a retaliatory video on you tube. The video has since received over 5.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: “Good luck with that one, pal”. Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has lead to a sharp increase in orders.
The Video he made.

A salesman goes up to a house and knocks on the front door. It’s opened by a little twelve year-old boy who has a lit cigar in one hand, a glass of whiskey in the other and a Penthouse magazine tucked under his arm. Salesman says “Hello son. Is your mum or dad home?” Little boy says “What the fuck do you think?”

Three old ladies were sitting side by side in their retirement home reminiscing. The first lady recalled shopping at the green grocers and demonstrated with her hands, the length and thickness of a cucumber she could buy for a penny. The second old lady nodded, adding that onions used to be much bigger and cheaper also, and demonstrated the size of two big onions she could buy for a penny a piece. The third old lady remarked, “I can’t hear a word you’re saying, but I remember the guy you’re talking about.”

Well, its been a while. Sorry about not updating more frequently. Its been a crazy week. Now that I’m physically recovered from travelling to Calgary for the Grey Cup, I’ll try to keep this up to date for our remaining 13 days of class.

Current Events

Prime minister Harper is in the capital of China (Beijing) today. He made a surprise announcement giving Canada’s economic update ahead of when our finance minister was suppose to. He stated the government has created 12,000 programs to boost the economy under their action plan.

US President Obama made a speech last night outlining their plans to assist in Afghanistan. 30,000 more troops are being sent over. Some of those troops will fall under Canadian command in the Arghandab Valley.

Continued story of the Seair plane crash off the coast of BC earlier in the week. Wreckage has been recovered.

CEO of General Motors, Fritz Hendersen, resigns due to difficulties between he and the board of directors about the pace of change at GM.

Social 9

We finished our transition from the Punic Wars, through the growth of the Roman Republic up to Julius Caesar today. Students completed an entry card asking them to identify 3 differences between a republic and an empire. We then reviewed those differences and looked at 2 powerpoints on the transition to and the rise of Julius Caesar. Students were asked to apply their knowledge from the entry cards to try to identify when they thought the Republic died and the Empire begins.

Reminder – Thursday – Historic Atlas Sheets are due on Rome – Republic to Empire

Links to Powerpoints

Punic Wars to Sulla Powerpoint

Rise of Caesar

English 10B

Today the class took part in an Assessment for Learning (AFL) activity. They had to read an article given to them and answer 10 comprehension questions. They then had to write 3 written response questions. The AFL is being used by the English Arts teachers as a way to gain a baseline on where our student’s reading comprehension and writing skill are at and where we need to focus our teaching. It will allow us to compare and hopefully see improvement later in the year. The students will also be writing a provincial assessment similar to this in the second semester.

Reminder for ELA 10B – Macbeth questions Act 1 (remaining questions are due) plus the worksheets given by my sub on Monday are due tomorrow.

Science 8A

We had a lighter day today. Students completed work on the lab on temperature and solubility that we did yesterday. They then finished a worksheet on temperature, dissolving and graphing. To finish the class, they completed watching a video on Mount Everest, that they had began late last week. Tomorrow will include a review of the dissolving section of our unit and a lesson on the different parts of an experiment. (Manipulated Variable, Responding Variables and Controls)

Reminder Science 8 – Labs are due Thursday.

The last words of Julius Caesar are often quoted as Et tu Brute?, “You too, Brutus?” They are also quoted as Tu quoque, Brute?, which means the same. The second variant has been sufficiently popular to make logicians apply these words to a well-known logical fallacy (“pot calling the kettle black“).

That those famous last words are quoted in two versions, already suggests that something’s gone wrong. They cannot both be correct. As it turns out, the expression “Et tu Brute” has been coined by Shakespeare (Julius Caesar, act 3, scene 1); they are not the dictator’s final words, though, because he reflects upon his own death in characteristic third-person, “Then fall, Caesar”.

That leaves us with Tu quoque, Brute. But Caesar probably did not even say that. According to Suetonius, he just sighed, or said something in Greek:

When he saw that he was beset on every side by drawn daggers, he muffled his head in his robe, and at the same time drew down its lap to his feet with his left hand, in order to fall more decently, with the lower part of his body also covered. And in this wise he was stabbed with three and twenty wounds, uttering not a word, but merely a groan at the first stroke, though some have written that when Marcus Brutus rushed at him, he said in Greek, “You too, my child?” (καὶ σὺ τέκνον;)

[Suetonius, Life of Caesar, 82.2]

Surely one of the most famous scenes from Roman history is the murder of Julius Caesar during a meet

Surely one of the most famous scenes from Roman history is the murder of Julius Caesar during a meeting of the Senate. Scratch that; one of the most famous scenes from world history. As you enter the Curia (the Senate House) in the Forum, the starkness of the building seems a fitting backdrop for the assassination.

In actual fact though, the Curia was temporarily absolutely out of action at the time. In the chaos of Roman politics at the tail end of the Republic, supporters of the recently murdered rabblerousing politician Clodius had turned the Curia into a funeral pyre for their figurehead. The Senate, therefore, were meeting elsewhere; the theatre of Pompey to be exact, part of Caesar’s great rival’s giant Porticus complex.

These days, the theatre’s long gone, although I think some foundations remain under some other buildings, but if you go to Largo di Torre Argentina you can see the back of the Porticus and the public toilets which made up another part of it. The assassination itself would have taken place in the location of the modern day Teatro Argentina, one of Rome’s most important contemporary theatres.

The interesting thing about all of this is the lack of publicity the city of Rome gives to the place. Largo di Torre Argentina’s a bewildering find when you stumble upon it; it looks hugely significant (and indeed it is – it contains some of the only Republican Temples still in existence) but it’s just fenced off and surrounded by busy roads. The only concession to its significance is a rather dull information sign plonked at the side. That Caesar met his untimely end so close to the spot came as a complete surprise to me.

So, when Caesar read about Alexander’s life, he burst into tears. Perhaps the more ambitious of us o

So, when Caesar read about Alexander’s life, he burst into tears. Perhaps the more ambitious of us ought to cry with him.

“His friends were surprised, and asked him the reason of it. ‘Do you think,’ said he, ‘I have not just cause to weep, when I consider that Alexander at my age had conquered so many nations, and I have all this time done nothing that is memorable?’”

Like Alexander, Caesar was ambitious from a young age and had every intention of making something of himself. Caesar’s success, like Alexander’s, seems to have come from the proper mixture of boldness, charisma, intelligence, and luck.

Like Alexander, Caesar was bold, right from the beginning. As a young man, he was taken hostage by pirates, who demanded 20 talents for his ransom. He said he could raise fifty and spent the rest of his captivity essentially hanging out with the pirates and joking with them that he would hang and crucify them after he got free.

Well, Caesar’s ransom came, he was released, and he went home. Then he got a flotilla of ships together, hunted down the pirates, and crucified them just as he promised.

Caesar rose from being an adventurous youth to a military commander who had great success in the provinces to become the first Roman emperor. The civil war that he fought with Pompey marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the empire. Plutarch cross references Caesar’s life with the life of Pompey and Brutus, showing us that he is not trying to write a straightforward history, but more of an heuristic biography.

In his war with Pompey, we see evidence of all of his traits and how they played out. Caesar was bold to make the war in the first place and in his marches and attacks on Pompey’s army. He was charismatic in that his soldiers remained loyal to him in the direst of circumstances, and in the way he forgave Pompey’s officers and soldiers and incorporated them into his own army. He was intelligent in making plans and knowing what tactics to employ against Pompey. He also showed his intelligence in turning a weakness into a strength. Finally, he was lucky in that Pompey’s nerve failed him at critical moments, and his men found sustenance when they needed it most.

Pompey was not an aggressive opponent, and it leads one to wonder what might have happened had he been. In a battle near Brundisium, Pompey nearly had the best of Caesar’s army.

“Caesar’s affairs were so desperate at that time that when Pompey, either through over-cautiousness or his ill-fortune, did not give the finishing stroke to that great success, but retreated after he had driven the routed enemy within their camp, Caesar, upon seeing his withdrawal, said to his friends, ‘The victory to-day had been on the enemies’ side if they had had a general who knew how to gain it.’”

Looking at Caesar’s intelligence, we can see how he turned weaknesses into strength. For example, we are told that Caesar “was a spare man, had a soft and white skin, was distempered in the head and subject to an epilepsy….” When he was trying to secure his hold on power after the civil war and made a political misstep in the Senate that could have cost him power, he blamed his behavior on the “epilepsy.” This appearance and illness also served him well in winning the loyalty of his soldiers because he bore many of the same hardships and they were ‘astonished’ by his endurance, Plutarch tells us. This was also an example of how he blended charisma with intelligence to build loyalty among his troops.

His boldness was evidenced in his work against the pirates and in his military campaigns. He marched into Macedonia with starving troops after his near-defeat by Pompey. There he took Gomphis, a town in Thessaly.

“But after he took Gomphi, a town of Thessaly, he not only found provisions for his army, but physic too. For there they met with plenty of wine, which they took very freely, and heated with this, sporting and reveling on their march in bacchanalian fashion, they shook off the disease, and their whole constitution was relieved and changed into another habit.”

Caesar’s boldness shows up in nonmilitary ways as well. He had plans to divert the Tiber river to create a new channel for merchants who traded with Rome, drain marshes for more arable land, build sea walls on the shore nearest Rome, and remove rocks and shoals at Ostia to make it safe for ships.

While these things did not come to fruition, one of his boldest aims was one of the most long-lasting, affecting everything that came after it. He remade the calendar “in order to rectify the irregularity of time….” That is quite an undertaking, to change time.

“Caesar called in the best philosophers and mathematicians of his time to settle the point, and out of the systems he had before him formed a new and more exact method of correcting the Calendar, which the Romans use to this say, and seem to succeed better than any nation in avoiding the errors occasioned by the inequality of the cycles.”

Even with all of his attributes, Caesar still feared pale, skinny guys like himself.

“Nor was Caesar without suspicions of him and said once to his friends, ‘What do you think Cassius is aiming at? I don’t like him, he looks so pale.’ And when it was told to him that Antony and Dolabella were in a plot against him, he said he did not fear such fat, luxurious men, but rather the pale lean fellows meaning Cassius and Brutus.”

As we all know, Brutus and Cassius murdered Caesar and then later took their own lives in the civil war that resulted. In describing the end of Caesar’s life, it seems Plutarch almost has a ‘be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it’ message. He tells us that Caesar constantly sought glory, even from a young age.

“Caesar died in his fifty-sixth year, not having survived Pompey above four years. That empire and power which he had pursued throughout the whole course of his life with so much hazard, he did at last, with much difficulty compass, but reaped no other fruits from it than the empty name and invidious glory.”

It was all here. Before someone observed that Kings are not Gods, before some one interpreted the structure of the globe, before someone invented filaments could glow, before everything… it was just here. Before animals knew of colors, there was rainbow. We brought nothing into this world. And we take away nothing. We just observe, interpret and discover things that was all here.

Sometimes I can’t be bothered to cook an extravagant meal, so I always fall back on salads. They are quick, delicious and good for you. So I see that as a win, win, win! This particular salad is my way of doing a chicken caesar. The dressing is much easier than making your own from scratch.

I made 2 large salads

Chicken Marinate

300 grams chicken tenderloins

1-2 garlic sliced

2 sprigs rosemary

1/4 cup wine, I used a rose but It is nicer with a white.

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon of sumac

1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds

Salad Ingredients

icebery lettuce, use as much as you need per person

spinach leaves, again use a much as you think you need.

1 cucumber sliced

cherry tomatoes

2-3 boiled eggs

50 grams feta

avocado sliced

Dressing

1/4 cup of whole egg mayonnaise

1 teaspoon seeded mustard

1 garlic crushed

1 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese

2 teaspoons white wine vinegar, or lemon juice.

Method

1. Put all the ingredients for the chicken marinade together, cover with cling wrap and place in the fridge to marinate for a couple hours.

2. Mix all the ingredients for the dressing together, place it in the fridge till needed.

3. hard boil eggs and also place them in the fridge till needed.

4. Char-grill the chicken, add salt and pepper while cooking. Set it aside to rest a little, just so it isn’t too hot to add to the salad. Then assemble the salad ingredients, and spoon the dressing over generously.

In our Epistle, St. Paul reminded the Christians in Phillipi that their citizenship was in heaven. In Holy Baptism, Christ had made them citizens of His heavenly kingdom. They now belonged to Jesus Christ, the risen and ascended Emperor of the Universe. As citizens of His kingdom, Jesus forgave their sins and destroyed their death. As citizens of His kingdom, Jesus promised them the resurrection of their flesh. On the Last Day, He would transform their lowly, mortal, death-ridden bodies to be like his glorious, immortal, and resurrected body. Jesus Christ will accomplish this by the power that enables him to subject all things to himself, which is the power of His Word. The Word that created all things, visible, and invisible, would recreate His people from the ashes and dust of death in the bodily resurrection unto life everlasting.

She got an A on this one. For her Western Culture class. The question was whether he was overall a hero or villain.

Augustus and Leadership

From the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, Augustus, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, fought to end the civil war that resulted from Julius Caesar’s death. In 31 BC Augustus defeated Marc Antony leaving him the sole ruler of Rome and it’s provinces. From this point forward Augustus sought to restore order and consolidate power. Under the circumstances of the times in which he lived Augustus did many great things as he created his position of Emperor and brought the provinces under his direct control. His achievements were many and it can be concluded that his mastery of Rome made him a hero to the Roman people.

Upon Julius Caesar’s murder Rome fell into civil war. Three factions arose to take control. The first was a faction loyal to Brutus and Cassius- Julius Caesar’s murderers. A second was loyal Marc Antony, an associate of Julius Caesar. The third was loyal to Octavian, later to be known as Augustus, who was Julius Caesar’s nephew and adopted son. At first Marc Antony and Augustus joined forces and defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius. Marc Antony and Augustus then fought each other, with Augustus being victorious and Marc Antony committing suicide. In 31 BC Augustus found himself facing the same problems that Julius Caesar had faced many years earlier.

Augustus now needed to provide Rome a stable form of government. The Senate had always been the dominant political body in the Roman republic. So, Augustus chose to first work through the Senate while he re-established the bureaucracy needed to effectively administer the Empire. It was the Senate that re-named him from Octavian to Augustus. From this point on Augustus began the process of consolidating power by assuming the responsibilities of many previously separate offices. Some of these powers were given to him by the Senate, such as princeps (first citizen) others, such as pontifex maximus (supreme priest) he gave himself. While Augustus left the Senate as an important part of the political system in Rome itself, in the provinces Augustus took direct control. The slow methodical assumption of power led him to the role of Emperor.

Augustus accomplished many good deeds and completed many good projects during his reign. In addition to maintaining peace in the Empire and some of its provinces such as Gaul and Spain he extended the frontiers of many of the provinces as well. “I restored peace to the Gallic and Spanish provinces and likewise to Germany, that is, to the entire region bounded by the Ocean form Gades to the mouth of the Elbe River. I caused peace to be restored in the Alps, from the region nearest to the Adriatic Sea as far as the Tuscan Sea, without undeservedly making war against people.”(pg 58 DWP) Augustus at times of need was generous enough to give his own money and other resources to the Empire to help maintain financial stability. “Four times I came to the assistance of the treasury with my own money, transferring to those in charge of the treasury 150,000,000 sesterces… I transferred out of my own patrimony 170,000,000 sesterces to the soldiers’ bonus fund… whenever the provincial taxes fell short, in the case sometimes of 100,000 persons and sometimes of many more I made up their tribute in grain and in money from my own grain stores and my own patrimony…”(pg 56-57 DWP). Augustus also built and repaired many important building and architectural projects. “I repaired the Capitol and the theater of Pompey with enormous expenditures on both works… I repaired the conduits of the aqueducts which were falling into ruin…I doubled the capacity of the aqueduct called Marcia by admitting a new spring into its conduit…I reconstructed the Flaminian Way from the city as far as Ariminum, and also all the bridges…”(pg 57 DWP) Augustus also sponsored many gladiatorial shows. These shows were important social gatherings and helped Romans establish their own identity. “ I gave gladiatorial show three times in my own name, and five times in the names of my sons or grandsons; at these shows 10,000 fought… Twice I presented…an exhibition of athletes invited from all parts of the world… Twenty-six times I provided for the people… hunting spectacles of African wild beasts in the circus of in the Forum or in the amphitheatres…” (pg 57 DWP) Perhaps most importantly Augustus maintained peace in Rome through his entire reign. “…while Augustus in the vigorous years of his life maintained his power that of his family and peace.”(pg 55 DWP)

In our modern democratic world the word Emperor is very negative. However, many rulers, kings, emperors, czars accomplished great things during their rule that advanced their people and their civilization. Augustus was certainly an Emperor but he was one of those emperors who was worthy of some admiration. He created peace and prosperity without the brutality that was typical of the times in which he lived.

I adore Caesar Salad; but I’m also extremely picky about it. So many places seem to butcher it, resulting in a boring, bland, watery dressing, or perhaps they go the route of overly thick and too heavily seasoned. Either way, it’s bad.

I’ve been on the hunt for the past few years for the perfect Caesar dressing…and I think I’ve found it.

Try it out and feel free to let me know what you think.

Caesar Dressing

2 egg yolks (you can coddle the eggs before you separate them if you’re concerned about the raw egg factor. I don’t bother personally)

1 TB + 2 tsp lemon juice

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt & Pepper to taste

2 medium garlic cloves (about 2 tsp, although you can do more or less pending on your affinity for garlic, and if you’ll have to be around company later)

4 anchovy fillets (seldom am I organized enough to have these handy, so I just use anchovy paste that you can buy in a tube at the grocery store. If you go this route, use about 1 tsp)

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil.

In a blender or food processor combine the egg yolks, lemon juice, Worcestershire, salt, pepper, garlic, and anchovy fillets. Pulse until smooth. Slowly add the olive oil until the dressing thickens to desired consistency.

Circus Probst’s ferocious five-year-old feline Caesar was lying in the back of a Mercedes van when a thief saw an opportunity and went for it. Hmm, when the van was discovered later that night, abandoned with the engine still running next to a broken road sign it was assumed he heard the roar (oh, fly on that wall). Even funnier, when the van was towed away no one knew Caesar was even in the back . Circus lion 1, reformed car thief 0.

Anu Radha The Madiwala Bus Stop was crowded. We waited for a little privacy, as we did not feel like

Anu Radha

The Madiwala Bus Stop was crowded. We waited for a little privacy, as we did not feel like moving elsewhere. The blood stains where thick and clotted, but was not really visible through my hair. But as it was my blood, I could feel it – just as I could feel her hand on mine. Both left a scar.

Her name is Anu Radha. Like millions of her admirers, I call her Anu.

“What did Sreejith say?”

“That I need to consult a psychologist.” Head hurt and the clot prevented further blood flow. I knew I smelled of blood and mud.

But Anu didn’t care. Her face was sad. “People might not recognize what you are capable of. But I know. I always knew…” She put hers arms around me.

What was I capable of? – I did not know. But it sounded good.

A passing couple frowned at us. The lady was in purdah. And the man wore a white cap. They were trying to make it very clear that Islam does not permit embracing in Bus Stops. May be its just about him.

Priya

The Google Talk popped up the screen. I scrolled down and down to check who is online. I saw Priya. And when I mouse-hovered her name, the profile expanded to give me a glimpse of her snap. She was gorgeous. She wore a pink top and khaki trousers. This one was her typical side view pose. And she made sure that all her curves are visible so that the viewer is ready to jerk-off.

“Hi”

“Hei… Jubith. How are you?”

“Doing good and how’s you?”

“Great. LA is just as captivating as FL”

“Oh. So u r in America”

“Didn’t I tell you that…?”

“No” (The last time I talked to her was from college – 4 years ago.)

“Oh. Sorry. How’s Anu?”

“She should be fine. We broke up.” (I made it sound as if it was just normal.)

“Oh my; you ditched her?”

“No.”

“So she dumped you.”

“No.”

I was amazed at what America had done to Priya. If a relation broke, it was the guy who ditched. And he is a culprit. He had to pay for it. If it was the girl who left, She dumped him. She was not interested. He was bad.

“Then what happened?”

“Well…”

Then I told her the story of a 4-year relation that broke up one Friday morning. At the end of the Story, I knew I was supposed to reach a conclusion. But I didn’t know what.

Gaia

The Caesar was slowly holding the strings of my senses. It slipped from my tongue to my stomach; only to stand up fierce & roaring with victory. I sat restlessly in the Bus from Chennai to Bangalore. Now Anu would come to conquer the Caesar. He would oblige and bend his head down and crown her as the Queen. And i did not have a choice but to grace it with tears running down my cheeks.

From the day man started to worship Idols instead of the one true god, the theory of relativity evolved to the Relativity of memories – Just like I remember the sambar served at school whenever I hear songs of Ashiquie, despite the fact that 10 long years have passed, Just like we feel power when we see a Shiva Idol and peace when we worship Vishnu.

The Relativity theory has its origin even before Caesar bowed down to Anu. When Anu was the fresh dew of a rainy night, when she was the breeze that blew the heat away, when she was the flower that bloomed, inviting the spring, when she was the green that reciprocated peace, power and prosperity.

When she left me behind, she did not care about the vital bodies that would talk about relativity – That it would come back to conquer the Caesar.

I had scars on my body – Scars, which lost its paint, which were bloody pale. I did not want to cry.

The mobile is the first thing I get hold of when I think about connectivity in spite of relativity. I scrolled down the numbers. I was stuck at one name. Gaia – The Airhostess friend of Anu. I had met her only once. Kingfischer couldn’t spell her name. So she trimmed her name from Gayatri to Gaia.

I wanted to talk to a person who had no prejudice on what I might reach at. Gaia must be just that. I hardly knew her.

I am using Anu’s old mobile phone and she had all her contacts in it. I would end up lying about how I got Gaia’s number.

Gaia took the call.

“Hello. My name is Jubith. And I would like to know if I really know you. Your number was there in my contact list.”

“Hei Jubith. I am Gaia. You don’t remember me?”

“Gaia? You are Anu’s friend, right?”

“Yeah”

“Oh cool. Sorry to have called you up at night. How are you doing by the way?”

“I am good. How’s Anu? It’s been almost 2 months I contacted her last.”

“She should be fine. As she is getting married the fall of December, she should be really fine.”

I could hear my voice tremble.

Gaia obviously sensed something is wrong.

“Is she not getting married to you?”

“No.”

“Oh…”

“We will talk sometime later Gaia. I’m caught up with something. Is that ok?”

That was a lie and I did not want her to think that I am a Snuggy baby weeping over pissing in the diapers.

“Ok. Take care.”

I got the urge to call her back as soon as I kept the phone. Now that I don’t have a reason to, I was left in the bus thinking. The bus halted at a petrol pump. And those of us who wanted some fresh air in and some exhaust out, got out of the bus.

I took the phone again. This time I would try to SMS – I really wanted to talk to Gaia or someone for that matter.

I think I want to talk to you. Can I call you up?

Yeah. Sure.

I felt relieved. I called Gaia. And then I spoke of Caesar’s war which was lost and the theory of relativity. I talked to her about the sea, moon and the stars that were beautiful with Anu. I spoke about the Dust and the Carbon that’s filling the air when I am alone. I talked to her about the Vital Bodies that haunt me everyday. And I was glad she listened to all those. Even told me a few Airline stories. I was glad I made a friend.

Saraswathi

The birds in the cage were pleading for freedom. But they were supposed to keep quiet and provide the feel of the nature to her living room. She is Saraswathi. Unlike the goddess, she believed in caging those & them, which would provide her with all the earthly pleasures. This time it was I.

The phone rang. I was amazed to read Anu Calling. Saraswathi’s hair strands went in my nose and I gasped for breath.

“Hello”

“Anu here.”

“I know”

“But there are things that you don’t know – that people are smarter than you think”

I was confused.

“Did you call Gaia?”

“Yeah. I did”

“Y?”

“I felt like calling.”

“Like you feel like going to restroom. Don’t you have common sense to understand that she would definitely call me up? That she is my friend and not yours”

Saraswathi’s huge thighs fell on mine and my flesh went week. I pushed her away. I was getting frustrated.

“Yeah. I thought of it. But what is wrong in that? I did nothing to insult you or our relation.”

“Our relation. Huh! Gaia told me that I made the right choice when I left you. And I am proud I did that.”

I did not answer that. I wanted Caesar.

“She also told me that you are such an abnormal person that you need some counseling. Maybe a psychologist… And I think she is right.”

I smelled of blood and mud. Saraswathi’s living room was now more of the Madiwala Bus Stop.

“She said no girl in her senses would ever marry you. And I know she’s right.”

I looked at Saraswathi. She looked concerned and tried to smile and keep me at ease.

“Why don’t you just get out of my life than playing a stupid Devdas?” She banged the phone.

I kept the phone away. I felt a cold breeze on my head and cheeks. Saraswathi was all around me now.

“Was it Anu?”

“Yeah.”

“What does she want?”

“She wants me to meet a psychologist”

“Hmm… Don’t worry. She might not know what you were capable of. But I know. I always knew…”

I smiled and I realised what I was really capable of.

We made love.

Caesar

Chennai weather is hot even in winter. And the nights would go crazy if you don’t have an air conditioner but you still prefer to sit at home.

We have a wide Terrace that we could always rely on. And the nature provided us the necessary cover with a few trees all around the place.

I am sitting with Siby, my only roommate and the lead actor in the first film I was making. He was filling the glasses, Opening food packets and setting the table on the open Terrace.

We switched on from Mc Dowell’s Brandy to Caesar Brandy after we moved to Chennai. And since then, Caesar has always been there.

“In the 14th scene, the one which has Niharika breaking up with Aadhityan, I would like to add a dialogue.”

“What is that?”

“That Aadhityan was abnormal and that’s why Niharika chose to leave him behind. And yes, he needs to consult a psychologist.”

Siby laughed aloud. Put his hands up and gave me a Hi-fi. That was our version of saying aye.

We said Cheers and sipped the first peg.

“Caesar is an honorable man.”

“Yes. He is”

“Rape!” she cries “Rape!

Am I nothing to you but a sexual plaything for you to use, misuse and disregard as it pleases you?

You come in from work and you sit at your computer all night talking to your so called friends on MySpace, they’re not real friends, their wrestlers and pop stars that you have never and will never meet, it’s probably not even them but their manager or assistant or even more likely it’s a 14 year old boy pretending to be them.

Why don’t you ever want to talk to me?

Your on eBay all night spending all out money on CD’s, DVD’s, your stupid little action figures but you never buy me anything, do you really think I like my house looking like a comic store?

Sure, you have a standing order going into my bank each month but that doesn’t make me a prostitute, that isn’t payment for sexual favours, that’s to pay the mortgage because you’re not trustworthy enough to look after our finances and keep a roof over our heads.

I go to bed each night leaving you to watch crappy little YouTube videos of Japanese karaoke, Star Wars dubbed with Welsh accents and obscure wrestling matches.
Then later you come to bed and sit on top of me and expect me to want you, to want to have sex with you and to be coherent.

It’s 2 o’clock in the morning, my sleepy eyes are sealed shut, I still don’t know if this is really happening or if I’m still dreaming, then you roll off of me all pleased with yourself like Caesar after he’d conquered the Germans and I lie there now awake and horny, listening to you snore.

You don’t care about me! You don’t care about my needs!
What about foreplay?
What about cuddling, kissing, fondling and cupping?
What about tickling and teasing and whispering to me sweet nothings?
What about holding me in your arms and telling me how much I mean to you?
How much I turn you on?
How beautiful I look?
And how about lasting longer than two fucking minutes?”

Recently I’ve started reading the famous ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ by George Orwell,

Recently I’ve started reading the famous ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ by George Orwell, a book which I – and you, probably – have heard so much about. I’m yet to finish it, but having spoken to some people who have there seems to be some mixed feelings about the book.

For those that haven’t read it: the book follows the story of Winston Smith, a worker at the Ministry of Truth in the dystopian Oceania, who rewrites the past to suit the needs of the ruling political party and its leader, Big Brother. The book essentially focuses on how an authoritarian regime can control the population which it rules.

Now to state the obvious. Like Animal farm, it was likely an attack on the ruling communist party in Soviet Russia. But, when you consider the book’s title (the book was written in 1949) – and the fact that the book is set in a country that was, once a upon a time, called England – it is clear that it is also a warning. A warning against the dangers of authoritarianism, that could be brought on by radical socialism (Clement Atlee’s government had come into power around the time of the books publication).

While understanding the main focus of the book is in how the ruling elite manage to control the population through lies and deception, the area of this that captured my attention most was when Orwell describes Winston’s job of rewriting history. It made me think to myself: How altered could our current history be? Did such regimes not exist in the past?

Being an Agnostic (borderline Atheist) I obviously have massive doubts about the legitimacy of historical claims made in religious texts such as the Bible and the Qu’ran. But what about other claims? Did Caesar really get stabbed 23 times on the senate floor? Or was it perhaps just a story told to the plebs of Rome? (Caesar’s supporters may have seen it as an act of cowardice; Caesar’s enemies may have seen it as an act of bravery… god knows what Rome’s population were made to think of it?)

And there’s others. Was William Wallace really a great warrior? Did Nietzsche really go insane? Was Cleopatra really beautiful? Did Henry the VIII really have six wives? Was there ever a wooden horse outside the gates of Troy? The list could go on… but I think we get the point.

I doubt very strongly we’ll ever know the validity of historical stories and events, especially those before the 20th Century, but it’s worth thinking about. After all, we’ve all told lies – just imagine if they were ingrained into history.

I ordered the following books this evening. I’m trying to read more history to help me with a history project as well as post-graduate studies. Any observations or suggestions are welcome. I had wanted to purchase more tertiary sources such as the IVP black dictionary series but it was my birthday so I got the ones I wanted instead of needed. I thought a picture of the Seyoon Kim book would summarize the content of the purchases for the most part (aside from the Sailhamer and Walton books).
