I’ve saved and dug them up every year. This spring, I started more than 200 bulbs, giving me a super abundance of these foilage plants. My mother and I put them in pots, in beds and anywhere else we could think of, and they made a lovely display.

But with cool nights and shorter days, the leaves begin to turn yellow and they must be dug up while you can still find them. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of them lying on a table on my back porch to dry.

They’re all one variety, Carolyn McWorter Whorton, from caladiums.com.

It rained during the night and the urns of caladiums are responding profusely to the warmth and rainwater. They were purchased in a box of fifty tubers from Costco. I put half in each urn. I am pleased with their progress. They should double in size by summer’s end.

aneka jenis caladium florida

Mencacah umbi menjadi beberapa bagian.

Sungkup wadah berisi semaian umbi hingga betul-betul tertutup rapat agar tercipta kelembapan tinggi.

Salam Sukses !

When Robert left Friday evening, this area was smooth. (The man knows me pretty well. See where he’s laid plywood and a rug up in the right-hand corner? He knows my clumsy self will fall through the framework.)

Well, here it is Sunday, and guess what I got out and did yesterday afternoon? Well, I decided I’d dig up some more tree roots for him. I ended up breaking my spade, so I grabbed the sharp shooter. I wonder why it’s called a sharp shooter? Sounds like a Texan named it.

I don’t know what he’s going to say when he sees this mess. I dug out a huge lawn bag full of roots. I feel like a semi ran over me today, so this is how it shall stay until he returns. I have pains in my body where I didn’t even realize I had body parts. And this debacle is aside from the wretched thorn tree trunk we have to deal with somehow!

If anybody needs good rich dirt, I have it. I’m tossing it in all parts of the yard. It’s a mixture of black and red and sand. The neighbors love my dirt. For some reason they don’t have it.

My yard looks like a nursery. Plants sitting everywhere. Not much rhyme or reason to it.

Something is eating my angel trumpet and potato vine and I don’t know what all. Greedy insect. Either my angel trumpet was ravaged romantically or just had a rough time of it. I don’t know which.

We’ve already had some rain this morning. Which will make my root mess even more of a job… Poor Robert. He tells me to stop helping him. Because he says I end up causing him more work in the long run.

Unfortunately, I’ve never been one to listen much.

Keladi atau caladium, sempet jadi kejaran orang ketika booming anthurium. Setelah anthurium tidur, e

Mudah-mudahan ini tidak dikatagorikan sebagai pembelaan…he..he.he

Saya tertarik keladi sejak lamaaa banget.

Global warming, Green peace, recycle – reuse, bike to work, yak apa lagi menurut sodara sekali

Global warming, Green peace, recycle – reuse, bike to work, yak apa lagi menurut sodara sekalian yang berkenaan mencintai alam dan ramah lingkungan….*silahkan diisi*.

Yak, saya termasuk penyuka tanaman hias terutama keladi atau Caladium, hingga saya membuat blognya sendiri disini *tapi lama g saya update, maafkan saya*.

Suka Caladium

Setiap malam selalu mengecek keberadaannya *kadang menyiramnya*, setiap akhir minggu membersihkan mereka. Pagi hari duduk menikmati pagi, siang, bahkan malam hari pemandangan rumah dan koleksi tanaman itu semua…membuat penat hari2 sibuk itu hilang, udara segar pemandangan indah. Subhanallah..

Seperti memilih pasangan hidup, dan aku ingin fokus tuk tanaman apa aza…hmm hatiku pun jatuh pada tanaman keladi. Tanaman khas Indonesia, banyak di pinggir kebun, selokan, got, sungai. Liar tapi indah dan mudah dipelihara dan cantik. Berwarna warni.

duh lupa..sik tak turu sik yo..*besok diupdate

See..gampang kan, kalo mau lebih jelasnya kopdar tanaman hias yukkk!!!

James Romer, Iowa Master Gardener Coordinator at Iowa State University Extension, offers the followi

James Romer, Iowa Master Gardener Coordinator at Iowa State University Extension, offers the following on tender perennials:

Tender perennials are an integral part of many home landscapes in the Midwest. Most have a long blooming period and put on excellent displays of color until it freezes in the fall. The biggest problem with tender perennials is that they will not survive Iowa’s harsh winter weather if left outdoors. The following tender perennials should be dug in the fall and stored indoors until spring graces our doorsteps once again.

Tuberous begonias (Begonia xtuberhybrida) come in a wide assortment of colors and types. Some of the flower forms include camellia, cascade, carnation, picotee and non-stop series. Container-grown plants can be brought indoors for winter enjoyment. Those tubers left outside should be dug after a killing frost. To properly condition the tubers for storage, place them in a warm, dry location for approximately two weeks. Then bury the tubers in a box or sack filled with sphagnum moss or vermiculite. Store them in a cool, dry location.

Caladium (Caladium xhortulanum) is a great plant in the shade. The caladium is grown for its colorful foliage rather than its flowers. When the foliage dies back in the fall, carefully lift the tubers out of the soil and find a warm, dry place to cure them. Typically the process is complete in two weeks. Store the tubers in dry sand, vermiculite or sphagnum moss in a cool (50 F), frost-free area.

Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybrids) is stunning in the garden and in arrangements, but they need to be dug and tucked away for the winter months. The gladiolus or glad develops from a growing structure called a corm. A corm is a short, thickened underground stem where food is stored. When the foliage has yellowed, lift the corms carefully, cut off the foliage 1 to 2 inches above the corm and allow drying for a week in a sunny location. Corms can be treated with a fungicide to prevent disease while in storage. Remove and discard the remains of the old mother corm located at the bottom of the large, healthy corm. Place the corms in old onion sacks or nylon stockings. Then store the corms in a cool, dry, frost-free location until spring planting occurs.

Though calla lilies (Zandedeschia spp.) are tropical in appearance, they can be successfully grown in the Midwest. After the foliage has been damaged by a frost, cut off the tops about 2 inches above the soil line. Dry the calla rhizomes in a warm, dry location for one or two weeks. Bury the rhizomes in vermiculite, sawdust or peat moss, and store in a cool (45 to 55 F), frost-free area.

The large, banana-like foliage of the canna (Canna xgeneralis) stands out in the garden. Some can get to be about six feet in height, while others top the two to three-foot range. After a killing frost, cut the stems back to about 3-4 inches above the soil. Carefully dig up the rhizomes, let them dry for a few hours, and then place them in crates or mesh bags. Store at 35 to 45 F.

Dahlias (Dahlia hybrids) stand out like beacons in the summer garden. With more than 40,000 varieties to choose from, it’s difficult to not like at least one. After a killing frost has destroyed the foliage, the top of the dahlia should be cut away, and the tubers should be carefully dug and labeled with the variety name. Wash the tubers with water to remove as much soil as possible. This lessens the chance for soil insects to destroy the tubers while in storage. Dry the tubers in a site protected from strong winds and out of direct sunlight. When the tubers become dry to the touch, remove any portion of the stalk that remains and place the tubers upside down in vermiculite to ensure that any water in the remaining crown tissue drains out.

Although all of these plants require more work to keep than your average perennial, their attractive flowers and foliage are well worth the extra effort.

August has a short list of gardening tasks to perform in the garden. The hot temperatures of mid sum

August has a short list of gardening tasks to perform in the garden. The hot temperatures of mid summer make it tough to spend time in the garden, so take advantage of any cooler days to tend to grooming and weeding. Your main concern is supplying an ample amount of water for your plants. Weed control is important also, because with warmer weather and increased watering, weed seeds will germinate and grow faster, and mature to produce more seeds. Keep weeds cultivated out of all parts of the garden.

Watering can be the biggest task this month, particularly, if the weather is hot. Vegetable gardens, most flowering plants, and the lawn all need about one inch of water every week to keep them green and looking nice. Be sure to water thoroughly and deeply each time you water. When possible, do your watering in the morning or early afternoon so the soil has a chance to warm up before the cooler evening hours set in. Deep watering will induce the plant’s roots to grow deeper, where they are less likely to dry out, as well as the added benefit of anchoring the plant into the ground better. Light, surface watering actually wastes water, because the water never reaches the root zone of the plant, and the moisture rapidly evaporates from the top inch of soil. They best way to tell if your plants are receiving enough water is to take a trowel or shovel and dig down a few inches. The soil should be moist at least 3 to 4 inches deep to insure that the water is reaching the root zone of the plants. If you planted drought resistant plants in your garden, you won’t have to water as often, but the principal of deep watering still applies.

Be sure to check the hanging baskets and container grown plants every day during hot weather and about every second day on moderate summer days. Don’t check the surface – push your finger an inch or two into the soil to be sure there is adequate moisture below throughout the root area. Water them thoroughly each time you water, but be careful not to overwater them.

Perennials, annuals, and bulbs – take a few minutes to pick off the old dead flowers on your annuals, as well as the spent flowers on perennial plants. By removing the spent flowers, the plants will not go into the seed producing stage and should continue to flower longer into the season.

Fall blooming Crocus should be planted this month, to give you an extra week or two of flowers after the main garden plants have finished for the year. Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted this month or next. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.

Prune your hybrid roses in late August to promote the most fall blossoms. Remove about a third of the vigorous growth. Any stems that cross each other should be removed, as well as those that are in the center of the plant. Weak, spindly canes and any damaged by black spot fungus should be removed. Except in colder regions, roses should be fertilized through the end of September. Maintain a spraying schedule to control insects and disease.

Fruits and veggies – Now is the time to start your fall and winter vegetables. Plant starters or seeds of growing onions, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and winter cauliflower directly into the garden early this month.

Enjoy the harvest of your homegrown fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Odds and ends – Keep the weeds pulled, before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again. Weeds in the garden are harmful because they rob your plants of water and nutrients, harbor insects and diseases, and, on occasion grow tall enough to shade your flowers and plants.

Change the water in your bird bath regularly, and keep it filled. Standing water is less healthy for the birds, and may become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae.

Continue to watch for insect, slug and snail, or disease damage throughout the garden, and take the necessary steps to control the problem.

 Caladium

They are also known by the names elephant ear, heart of Jesus, and Angel Wings. Caladiums are tropical plants that are grown for their colorful foliage. Although tropical, they grow fast enough to be enjoyed during the summer in cooler climates and all year long as houseplants. Shade and humidity lovers, Caladiums dazzle in shade gardens with their large, pointed arrow-shaped leaves splashed with shades of green, white, cream, pink and red.

They are wonderful bright spots in a shade garden. Grouped together, they can look like they are in bloom. Caladiums grow equally well in containers and pair nicely with ferns and other soft textured plants like astibes, with spiky leaved plants such as ornamental grasses and shade tolerant iris and with coordinating colored blooms of fuchsia and Impatiens.

Caladiums cannot survive conditions much below room temperature, and thrive in warm, humid conditions. Most gardeners buy plants at garden centers, but one can buy the dormant tubers and start them in a warm indoor room. Plant the tubers, with the bumpy sides up, two inches deep in sterile soilless planting mix. Keep the containers at a warm room temperature and keep the planting mix constantly moist.

Plant caladiums outdoors, spacing them 8 – 12 inches apart, when night temperatures warm to 60 degree F. In summer, water as needed to keep the soil moist, and fertilize the plants every 2 – 3 weeks with a balanced soluble fertilizer, applied according to package directions. If the leaves develop holes and slimy trails, suspect slugs or snails. Control these irritants by setting out saucers of beer to lure and drown the pests. If the foliage is pale and stippled, sap-sucking spider mites may be feeding on leaf undersides. Rinse them off with water from a hose or apply insecticidal soap per label.

Lift dry tubers before frost hits the plants. Remove leaves and air-dry the tubers for a few days. Store them through winter in a box or paper bag filled with dry peat moss kept at a temperature above 70 degree F. Check monthly, and if the tubers are beginning to shrivel, mist them with tepid water.

In Zones 9 and warmer, where summers are long and warm enough for caladiums to develop large tubers, you can divide clumps in early spring and replant. In colder zones, caladiums lose vigor each year, despite care, making them unsuitable to propagate.

Yup, another plant! Surprise! Today, as I was doing my job… I was checking some irrigation lines and found this magical item. It’s a good thing my boss doesn’t mind if I take a picture here and there – I took 30! This happened to be my favorite shot. Enjoy.
