Kings of Leon are the best band of the year. So says Spin. So says the Grammy nominations. So says iTunes downloads. I don’t disagree. Whatever anyone wants to say, they had their most successful year in 2009. Including a series of sold out shows at 02 Arena in London, which they’ve actually turned those shows into a concert DVD.

The concert which premiered online at EPIX this weekend. The live footage from the concert below is a very special little treat for you A Listers, Use Somebody. I trust you’ll love.

Because the Kings of Leon drummer got married this past weekend to his lovely, talented bride Jessie Baylin.

Congrats to them both. The wedding happened in Tennessee and all the Followill hotness was there, brothers Caleb and Jared, and cousin Matt. As well apparently as Scarlett Johansson who is an old friend of Jessie’s. The 25-year-old Baylin spread the news on her Twitter: “Allow myself to introduce myself: Mrs Jessie B. Followill.” Cuuute…

If you’ve read this blog with any frequency in the past, you’d know already that in my mind I am married to Caleb Followill. And it’s a happy marriage. He’s my rock crush. It’s been a long term relationship. While other crushes come and go, this one has endured. As such, I have a fondness for Kings of Leon that is extra special. Any other band with music videos as bad as theirs I would probably have drifted away from eventually. But still, I adore.

And anyways, I like it when rock stars succeed in not marrying bimbos or hookers. I feel proud of them when that happens. The new Mrs Followill looks like an extreme catch. I approve of this union. Have you heard Jessie’s record Firesight? If not, you should give it a listen. Definitely amazing.

Μόλις άρπαξα το νέο dvd των KOL από το FOPP στην Byres Road. Για όσους δεν το γνωρίζουν ήδη είναι το dvd με το live τους στο O2 του Λονδίνου. Στιγμές σαν κι αυτές χαίρομαι που μετακόμισα στην Γλασκόβη! Στην Ελλάδα ο θεός ξέρει πότε θα κυκλοφορούσε το dvd…Θα μπορούσα να το παραγγείλω από το ίντερνετ βέβαια, αλλά δεν είναι το ίδιο. 11 λίρες η τιμή του εδώ για όσους ενδιαφέρονται. Που είναι ο Τσιαμτσίκας?

Γράφω λοιπόν καθώς βλέπω το dvd για δεύτερη φορά. Οι πρώτες σκέψεις που πέρασαν από το μυαλό μου καθώς το έβλεπα ήταν:

Πρώτον: Το να είσαι σεκιουριτάς σε συναυλία των KOL πρέπει να είναι ένα από τα πιο δύσκολα επαγγέλματα! Να πρέπει να κάτσεις σχεδόν 100 λεπτά με την πλάτη σου γυρισμένη στους Kings ακούγεται τουλάχιστον σαν κινέζικο μαρτύριο!

Δεύτερον: he’s such a charmer! Oh no! He’s getting married tomorrow! Oh no! J Μιλώ για τον αγαπημένο μου Followill, τον Nathan. Αλλά όταν σκέφτομαι ότι παντρεύεται την Jessie Baylin και όχι καμιά χαζογκόμενα αρχίζω να νιώθω καλύτερα.

Σκέφτομαι πόσο πολύ αγαπώ τα σχεδόν “μυστικιστικά” κομμάτια τους, όπως το “Milk”, το “Knocked Up” και το “Cold Desert”, πόσο αγαπώ τα ονειρικά κομμάτια τους, όπως το “Manhattan”. Λυπάμαι που δεν έπαιξαν το “Arizona”, το “Revelry” ή το “My third House” στο O2, αλλά δεν μπορούμε να τα έχουμε όλα, έτσι;

Έβαλαν φωτιά στην αρένα με το “Sex on fire”, το “Black Thumbnail” και το “Crawl”.

Ο καθένας τους μοιάζει τέλειος στον ρόλο του και αναντικατάστατος. Ο Nathan μεγαλοπρεπής στον θρόνο του- έχει προσέξει κανείς πόσο καλά τραγουδάει στα back vocals; Ο Jared είναι τόσο cool με τα στιλάτα ρούχα του και το brit κούρεμά του. O Matt σε «στέλνει» με τα solo του και τέλος ο Caleb…δεν έχω λόγια…Η στιγμή που δακρύζει λίγο πριν το “Cold desert” είναι τόσο…αληθινή! Είμαι σίγουρη ότι όλοι όσοι είδαν το dvd συμφωνούν μαζί μου. Είπε τα εξής: “Θέλω μόνο να πω…και θέλω οι κάμερες να γυρίσουν προς τα μένα όταν το λέω αυτό”-κοντινό πλάνο στα υγρά μάτια του Caleb-“αν δεν ήσασταν εσείς δεν θα είμαστε συγκρότημα αυτή την στιγμή. Μας αγκαλιάσατε από την αρχή και μας βοηθήσατε να μεγαλώσουμε όταν ήμασταν μικροί και μας είδατε να κάνουμε πολλά λάθη αλλά μείνατε μαζί μας και τώρα είμαστε εδώ, γι’αυτό, ο θεός να σας ευλογεί! Έχουμε λίγα ακόμα τραγούδια να παίξουμε αλλά θέλω να ξέρετε ότι θα επιστρέφουμε όσο συχνά εσείς μας θέλετε πίσω”-Χειροκρότημα…και μετά έρχεται το μαγικό, ατμοσφαιρικό, ονειρικό, συγκινητικό, “Cold desert”. Αναρωτιέται κανείς είναι όντως αληθινός;;; Δεν θα είχα την παραμικρή αμφιβολία γι’αυτό. Ο χρόνος το έχει αποδείξει άλλωστε.

Είναι απίστευτο το πώς κάποιος σαν εμένα, που συνήθως βαριέται ένα τραγούδι μόλις το ακούσει 5 φορές, δεν βαριέται ακούγοντας τα albums των KOL για την 99999ή φορά.

Υποκλίνομαι για άλλη μια φορά στον μουσικό τους ταλέντο και ανανεώνω τους όρκους πίστης μου. Είμαι και θα παραμείνω ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους fans τους.

Το συνιστώ ανεπιφύλακτα!

I just laid my hands, eyes (and ears) on the new KOL dvd with their live performance at the O2 arena in London on June 2009. In times like these I’m so glad I moved to Glasgow! I don’t know when this would be released in Greece.

So, I’m writing this as I watch the dvd for the second time. My first thoughts were two:

First: being a security guard at a KOL concert must be one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Having to stand for nearly 100 minutes with your back turned on the Kings sounds like a Chinese torture method to me!

Second: he’s such a charmer! Oh no! He’s getting married tomorrow! Oh no! J I’m talking about my favorite Followill, Nathan. But the thought that he’s marrying Jessie Baylin and not some stupid bimbo makes me feel a lot better! She’s a wonderful person and I know they will be happy for ever and ever…ok! ok! enough with the corny stuff…back to music!

I stop to think how much I love their “mystical” songs, like “Milk”, “Knocked Up” and “Cold Desert”, how much I love their dreamy songs, like “Manhattan”. I’m sorry they didn’t play “Arizona”, ”Revelry” or “My third House” at the O2 but we can’t have everything, can we? They set the place on fire with “Sex on fire”, “Black Thumbnail” and “Crawl”.

Each one looks perfect in his role and irreplaceable. Nathan looks majestic in his throne- Hell yeah! That guy can also sing! Jared looks so cool in his stylish clothes and cute brit haircut! Matt blows you away with his guitar solos and last but not least, Caleb…no words for him. His teary moment before “Cold desert” was so…real! Everyone that saw the dvd will agree with me. His exact words were: “I just want to say…and I want the cameras to be looking at me when I’m saying it”-close up on Caleb’s wet eyes-“if it wasn’t for you people we wouldn’t be a band right now. You guys embraced us from the very beginning and you nurtured us as we were growing and you saw us make a lot of mistakes but you stuck with us and now here we are so, god bless you! We have a few more songs for you but I just want you guys to know we’ll be back as often as you guys will let us come” Applause, applause, applause! And then comes the wonderful, magical, dreamy, heart-melting, knee-bending, “Cold desert”. Makes you wonder is he for real??? I wouldn’t doubt for a moment that he is.

It’s ironic how a person like me, who gets bored after listening to a song for more than 5 times, doesn’t get bored after listening to their albums for the 99999^th time.

I bow again to their musical genius and I renew my vows of loyalty to them. I am and I will remain one of their biggest fans.

#11.  Kings of Leon- Because of the Times (2007): Somewhat lost in the hype over Kings of Leon’s most recent album Only by the Night, is the brilliance and maturity they brought here.  Preceded by the sophomoric Aha Shake Heartbreak, the family Followill makes a quantum leap here with a collection of material that brings their post-punk influence front and center.  Lyrically, there is no new ground covered here.  Older, but still young men, the themes of youth still exist.  Yet the music, production, and musicianship reflects a level unseen in prior albums.  Instead of Lynyrd Skynyrd tinged-garage rock, the band goes arena style with tunes like “Fans,” an homage to, well their fans.  The opener “Knocked Up” is a sparse seven minute trance sprinkled with staccato drums and harmonic guitars that sounds like nothing you’ve heard from K-O-L before.  Perhaps the strongest tune on the album, “Arizona” is as lonely and desolate as anything Rey Lamontagne has put out.   Though their latest album made them a household name, Because of the Times is no doubt a stronger offering.

I should have listened to my writers. Why didn’t I do that sooner?

I have been playing this album non-stop for the past month. Actually, I’ve been playing the same 4 songs (with a little GaGa thrown in. she never hurt nobody.) on repeat at work for the past three weeks. Caleb Followill’s voice is hauntingly beautiful, especially in these songs.

I haven’t heard talent like this from a vocalist since Amy Winehouse, and before her, I’m not sure what else is out there in the world of rock. This man needs to sing passionately at all times, because that’s when you hear the real music. Wikipedia tells me that it’s a band of brothers from a Pentecostal family — there ought to be some passion in there either way. And from the sound of this brilliant album, it looks like they’ve found it.

Wow!

This man with his deep Southern Roots could make me sing “Son of a preacher man” any day. It’s that rough rock voice that blast out of speakers when he says “Your sex in on fire..” that ignites panties across the country. While the song is about STD’s which I already knew because I wanted to use it for a PSA in film class, that doesn’t stop me from wanting to let him rub my nalgas while he sings this song to me.

With three Grammy nominations and one award, a world tour, and a new album coming next year will the Nashville band-of-brothers be the next legendary rock band?

The Kings of Leon are by no means a new or upcoming band.  Their follow up to Only by the Night, which was the number one album in the UK in 2008, will be their fifth major studio album.  They have a huge international fan base; Kings of Leon also headlined the Glastonbury, which is the UK’s oldest music festival.  With all of this love and their constant playlist on the radio, it is hard not see to a very bright future.  However, they were not winners this weekend in New York.

Their majesties were nominated for Best Rock Video with “Sex on Fire” at MTV’s 2009 Video Music Awards.  ”We lost dammit, maybe next year.  At least we got to see the worst haircut since 1984 try to steal the spotlight from lovely Taylor Swift,” Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill joked to Digital Spy after Kanye West’s actions on stage.

Their next album is expected in the late fall of 2010.  Guitarist Matthew Followill told BBC earlier this year that the next album could be “a little bit grungier.”  Caleb Followill also said about their new album, “We pretty much now can do what we want.  America has to sit back.”  This could be the start of a new sound for the band.  Who knows, their first four albums could be referred to as “the early years” on Wikipedia one day.  If they stay on their current course, rockers in 2050 might just have sex on fire and put it in their heart shaped box.

Kings of Leon’s ONLY_BY_THE_NIGHT remains one of my fave albums in recent years.  There is nothing better than that undeniable inflection in a singer’s voice that makes you recognize him/her from the hint of one note.    And it’s front man Caleb Followill’s distinctive voice that truly takes this album’s well-written and masterfully-produced songs into a total different stratosphere.  Honestly, I hadn’t felt this blown away by an album since Radiohead’s OK Computer!

So it is no surprise that I am sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for what Billboard and MTV report will be the release of a ONLY_BY_THE_NIGHT remix album.  Both sources report collaborators would include Linkin Park, Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson and Justin Timberlake.

I am not one for remix albums.  As the old adage goes: don’t try to fix something that ain’t broken.  However, I have a sneaking suspicion that this Leon project will take some errant course much like the beloved and very successful Bjork remix album, Telegram — which was comparable and in some regards even better than its predecessor Post.

I took my 18-year-old sister to the Kings of Leon concert. It’d been ages since I’d been to a show at GM and I was a little insecure about my advancing years.  I was concerned about the teeny boppers this group might attract given the ‘poppyness’ of their last album, Only By The Night. What if someone asked me something about the Jonas Brothers or Gossip Girl?! I thought I’d bring someone who fit the demographic just in case.

Turns out my fears of being too old were unfounded. A grab bag of Metro Vancouver residents, all of varying ages (phew!) and all Kings of Leon fans, descended on GM Place for the first of two concerts in Vancouver. Everyone looked ready to rock.

Once we got there we knew we were in the right place. It was a typical Vancouver concert, ever-present plumes of B.C.’s finest less-than-surreptitiously wafted up from the crowd. Cameras flashed at regular intervals, undoubtedly leaving their owners with over-exposed mementoes of the back of the heads of the people in front of them. People lined up before and during the show on the off-chance an elusive bathroom stall would become available or for the privilege of paying eight dollars for a beer. Ahhh GM Place. This is what it’s all about.

My first reaction upon taking my seat was to say ‘What is this, a stage for ants?!’ Sadly, the Zoolander reference was lost on my much younger sister. Then I realized, it wasn’t so much the size of it or the distance of the stage from my seat, but the utter lack of video screens showing us have-nots at the back what was going on onstage. If I were a gambling woman (and I’m not, I don’t have the money or the luck) I would guess that KOL’s elaborate lighting rigs and towering video screens didn’t make the trip from Calgary to Vancouver. Or at least I would hope that was the case, because there was absolutely nothing visually pleasing about the set up.

Once the band launched into “Be Somebody”, the opening song, the relative enormity of the arena did nothing to deter from frontman Caleb Followill’s richly resonating voice. His performance was soul-rending and he managed the spotlight well. There was no jockeying for ‘lead position’ on stage, in fact there wasn’t much of anything except amazing bass, drum, and guitar.

Luckily the band’s tireless enthusiasm and pitch-perfect delivery carried them most of the way. But not far enough. What could have been a mind-blowing show was instead a great show. Still not bad, but it left something to be desired. Sitting in our section you could appreciate that they were giving it their all but you were left on the fringes to an extent. Followill told the audience that it felt like they were playing a pub show. The floor was general admission so anyone crammed right in there probably got the benefit of that intimate feel more than the rest of us. The Kings did not run short on Southern hospitality as Caleb thanked and complimented the audience multiple times and you could tell these guys just really love what they’re doing.

The  setlist drew off all four of their albums which may have disappointed more recently-turned fans. The arena didn’t come alive until more recognizable and recent songs started up. An hour into the show and ‘On Call’ had shivers running down my spine. They played the song so intensely that I have a hard time listening to it now as I know it will never again be as good as it was then. Caleb stepped back from the mic and the entire arena sang the final ‘to be there’ in unison. The atmosphere by that point was electric. The Kings followed closely with another easily recognizable hit, ‘Use Somebody’ which had every single person singing along.

It’s a shame it took that long for the audience to warm up because after that point there were only three more songs and the encore left. The late start did not detract from anyone’s enjoyment though as the room stamped and cheered continuously from the time the band left the stage until they strode back on for the encore. ‘Slow Night So Long’, ‘Knocked Up’, ‘Manhattan’, and ‘Black Thumbnail’ finished off the evening for The Kings.

As we were lining up to leave GM Place I somewhat apprehensively asked my sister for her opinion of the show. She said she thought it was a good concert but it could have been better. The venue was too big, she said, for the type of show they were playing. I couldn’t have said it better myself—I guess I’m not so out of touch with the kids after all.
