I don’t know who “Hank Moody” is the name of David Duchovny’s character on the show Californication. And if ‘dem boys from S.O.T.A. (State Of The Artist) continually find this kind of inspiration in the character, then they should start linking up with him on the regular. (I know, I know, “Hank Moody” is probably some sort of fictional character or composite manifestation of the groups’ alter egos. Whatever.)

IERI SERA… Chiude con oltre 7,3 milioni di spettatori il varietà di successo di Canale 5 “Chi ha incastrato Peter Pan?” con Paolo Bonolis e Luca Laurenti, uno dei principali successi dell’autunno televisivo. In poco più di 5 milioni invece hanno seguito su RaiUno l’incontro di calcio Milan – Olympique Marsiglia, terminato con un pareggio per 1-1 (con gol di Borriello e Lucho Gonzalez) che rende fondamentale la gara dell’8 dicembre contro lo Zurigo; tanti spettatori anche per i canali sportivi pay, che oltre all’incontro del Milan proponevano anche Bordeaux – Juventus, che è terminato con una sconfitta dei bianconeri per 2-0 e che renderà importante anche la gara Juventus – Bayern Monaco dell’8 dicembre. So Donny took it — mirror ball and all! He’s the Dancing With The Stars champ and was said to be “numb”, while Mya, about whom they said the trophy “was hers to lose” on account of her “astonishing dance scores” was reportedly “disappointed”.  Well bravo,  Donny, and my guess is Mya — especially given her stellar work on the dance floor this year — will have many happy days (and performances to come).  Same with Kelly O., who still has the vote (and adoration) of millions.  Now…let’s move into some holiday fare.  With Thanksgiving upon us, everyone’s probably going to be spending lots of time at the table or in front of the TV.  And so now let’s take a trip over to the basic cable realm, where fans of USA’s Burn Notice have good reason to be delighted — the show, starring Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar, has  been picked up for a fourth season.  Which got me thinking about basic cable in general, and how much good stuff is seemingly right under our noses.  And while we spend a great deal of time talking about the premium cable shows like Weeds, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, Entourage, Big Love, Californication etc…today I’d love to know where you all weigh in on some of  basic cable’s original series. Now since there are several of them that people love, I’m just going to throw out a few shows to see how everyone feels about that netherworld between networks and cable. You’ll notice I’m leaving out Breaking Bad, Monk White Collar and others — but that’s just because we’ll be talking about them next week.  So here goes…voice your choice in today’s featured poll and tell us which of these cable original series is your favorite? I know it’s not the coolest thing

to admire a television character- it’s not like respecting Muhammed Ali or even like vibing on the protagonist in some classic book written by some old Greenwich village pothead with dirty hair and circular glasses. It’s less cliche, and yet, cornier.  Still, Hank Moody (Californication) is the man. I’ll tattoo that on my belly, Tupac style.

Now, I’m not like Hank. I don’t have charm at my beck and call like he does. I’m also not in an eternal squabble with life, like he is.  For all of Hank’s bad parts though, he’s got some seriously redeeming qualities that make him extremely watchable; and if I had to take those bad parts in some takeitorleaveit situation, I’d be happy to be burdened with his sense of humanity, his philosophy of morality.  A while ago I wrote about the benefits, the attractiveness of making mistakes in one’s life, a little blog entry about the growth potential in not viewing a set back as a step backwards, but as a move in a complicated waltz. Mr. Moody’s got dancing shoes. I aspire to Hank’s methodology of coping and dealing, his unwillingness to subscribe to a rightness or wrongness in any choice, only submitting to the fact that there will be consequences.  More often than not, but less and less these days, our pop culture heroines and heroes (as represented by TV and movie characters) come out on a moral high ground.  As most media wants to appeal to America’s Christian-based morality and work-for-success sensibility, there’s usually a clear right and wrong written on the wall. Well, Hank is pissing on the wall! Cheering up his best friend necessitated copious vodka-filled tumblers, and although his selfless mission was completed, he’s wasted and can’t find the bathroom.  Que sera, sera! Morality can be dirty.

One of Moody’s responses solidified my love for the man.  In response to possible scandal, his reaction was “nigga, please?!”…

Um…yeah! A few things came to mind:

Did they actually just put that on TV? Yes, they did.

He said it to one of his white friends, does that make it OK? Hell no! As long as America’s hegemony is what it is, it won’t ever really be cool for white people to put a backwards cap on the ol’ N-word.

Does that make me like him less? I thought about it for a second, but no.  Hank Moody isn’t always good, that’s the point- in real life, he actually would have said that.  He would have meant no malice (like many of my paler brethren), probably just trying to exercise his ear-to-the-street sensibility. Gotta give it up though, it’s good use of the term. *I’m accepting supporting and rebutting comments*

No, really, did they just put that on TV? Yes, nigga!

I might also like that Hank provides a way off the hook.  For all my possible fuck-ups, I now have a precedent of rationale. I lied to my girl by omission of fact? Episode 5, season 1 can provide an analogous situation that might lighten the weight of my offense.  The writing of Hank’s character does an amazing job of liberating us (and by us, I’m throwing heavy implications to the male gender) of needing to know: what we want, how to be, how to deal. You dig?

He does have a few bullets to his ethos though:

•Never give up- regardless of past mistakes, when your eyes have fixed on your prize, there’s no other option, no other road to travel. Get that shit! How do you know when your eyes are fixed on the prize? There’s no algebra to it, listen to your libido, listen to your gut, listen to your heart and if all that fails, listen to your brain.

•It’s all about her- pardon me for sounding heterosexual. Hank’s “her’ is is daughter, but I extrapolate “her” to signify whoever may warrant the energies of your heart. There goes that Christian morality- I guess it couldn’t all be revolutionary.

And though I don’t think it would ever actually happen in real life, I’d like to delude myself to think that it’s possible to seduce the bartender into bed with a few witty comebacks and a properly placed hand. David Duchovny is no Brad Pitt, isn’t built like a 300 extra and doesn’t have an English accent.  This goes to say, he ain’t all dat and a bag o’ chips! But, he’s got character. This character’s got character. And that character, get’s him laid. It also gets him jobs (with Ashby), it gets him friends and get’s him along.  As vain as I am, I don’t think I could rebuke new denim and leather, but Moody’s philosophy rightly positions whatever image I can curate for myself as a compliment to my character (I do like how he’s always dressed in dark shades though, he must read SnD).

I feel like I’m legit.  20 years ago, I might be writing (on a typewriter) about how great of a character Sal Paradise is, and what he’s taught me, etc.  Before then, I might be raving about Biff Loman’s position.  But the revolution is televised. Besides, if Carrie Bradshaw can do it, so can Hank Moody.

Californication, aos domingos, após Pegadinhas Picantes, no SBT!

Entre altos e baixos, Californication foi lançada pelo Showtime, canal da tv paga americana, que entraria em ascenção depois de apostar em produções polêmicas. Em meio a muito sexo, drogas e drama familiar, a atração trouxe David Duchovny de volta à telinha no papel de Hank Moody, escritor que vê seu livro de sucesso ir para o limbo após uma pífia adaptação para os cinemas. Sentindo-se fracassado, não consegue trabalhar num novo livro, e cai no mundo das bebibas e drogas, e do sexo. Uma pesada influência vinda da sua separação, o que o afastou da filha e da então ex-mulher.

Californication é do tipo ame ou odeie. Exibida no SBT após Pegadinhas Picantes, atração quase que do mesmo gênero da série, conseguiu manter um bom público e garantiu a vice-liderança na maioria dos episódios exibidos nesta primeira temporada, que encerrou-se na madrugada deste domingo(16/11).

Tenho certeza que quem conferiu o penúltimo episódio e acompanhou toda a temporada, torceu para que a season finale não estragasse o bom momento do arco histórico da série. E parece que os produtores e roteiristas tiveram olhos firmes e já planejavam que nada poderia sair dos conformes.

Um episódio focado no casamento, onde foi visto os desabafos de Hank e toda a sinceridade dele ao dizer que não atrapalharia o casamento de sua ex-mulher, sensibilizaram. Hank mostrou, ao que parece, que deixou de ser aquele adulto bestão, com a mente na adolescência, que finalmente acordou pra vida. Isso tocou Karen, que percebeu o que estava perdendo, e num sensacional final, a fuga dela no carro de Hank e sua filha. E o noivo correndo atrás.

Um final bem fechado, redondinho. Típico de folhetim americano: o garoto mal terminando com a mocinha, a filhinha arranjando namoradinho e o agente feioso fazendo as pazes com a esposa selvagem e ex-bissexual. Se o final não deixou nada como aperitivo para a segunda temporada, é aí que nos enganamos: Californication é algo inexplicável, volátil e surpreendente: o que a gente menos espera, pode estar por vir.

A segunda temporada de Californication estreia neste domingo, 22 de novembro,às 0h30 no SBT.
