Just a very short post to share two projects. The first is a hat (sorta) and scarf (sorta) that I made for Eliana, my father’s wife. She is lovely and when she saw my calorimetry expressed glee at the idea of having one. So of course that was an easy Christmas idea. But then I got to thinking that she could probably use something to go with it and when I saw the Cedar Leaf Shawlette, by Alana Dakos (ravel it here!) I knew it would be perfect for her. I also figured it wouldn’t look too strange with a calorimetry in the same yarn. I highly recommend doing this in a silk blend yarn for drape. Beautiful.

She looks gorgeous (as usual)! The shawl pin and yarn are both from Webs, Mirasol Tupa (50% merino, 50% silk) in colorway number 808. Did I mention that Eliana loves red? Here is a close up although the color is true in the first picture, not this one.

The second project is an afghan that I made for my father in 1996! Such a long time ago! To my delight he put it on my bed last night and I was able to take a picture of a very old FO. I rarely crochet, but granny squares were a novelty to me at the time. Nice to see that my taste in witchy colors is not new! This is a lap blankie, about twin size. I have absolutely no recollection of the yarn or anything else.

Even in the midst of pesky things like final papers, a woman has to stay warm! Oooh the transition from Florida to Connecticut has not been cute! Snow. We are not loving it.

That said, it does inspire me to knit. And knit. And bemoan all the time I spent knitting socks. At least my feet are warm. So two more warm things have been completed.

This is a scarf for Kierstin (another scarf for Kierstin, we should say). It is loosely based on the scarf patterns distributed by Schaefer to go with their yarns, yet the yarn itself is not Schaefer. It is Lana Bambu which is 79% wool, 21% bamboo and comes in gorgeous colors with fabulous drape.

I also had to make another calorimetry to go with my purple coat. Note cute thistle button. Hooray for warm ears! This is a great quick pattern for anyone still looking for winter woolies. This one is made in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran.

You really can’t listen to anything I say. When I say I won’t post in November because I’m writing, well that’s a lie. Because once I announce anything to the World that automagically kills it. My life is amazing like that. I can’t post a book I’m reading on Goodreads or I suddenly become illiterate. I can’t tell you all about upcoming projects or I’ll probably accidentally set fire to all my yarn or something. *ohdeargodnoknockonwood*

I have a sweet internet buddy who I’m friends with on Ravelry. She made some super sexy mitts so I messaged her and when she messaged back she asked, still no wips?

Well crap, I guess not. Everything I’ve worked on has been dormant or it’s super quick and not really a work in progress so much as just happening. However I did finally bind off on a new sock and it was a new technique and everything. Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn bind off. Which I heard from Michelle, the sock queen, is a good way to bind off your toe up socks. Who knew?

Leaving me with two Cookie A. socks. Both without mates and they’re probably not going to get them any time soon. On the left is Rick, which I started this summer but got bummed out on. On the right is my recently finished Hedera. While I love the pattern and I love the Cherry Tree Hill yarn, I don’t think the two sit well with each other.

Plus the two together make me think of Christmas and the knitting I should do for that which makes me want to barf.

Also thanks a lot Fall for making the sun go away so early so I can’t get any good pictures outside anymore.

I did finish my first gift… but it’s for my mom and since she’s kind of picky about things, I probably won’t give it to her since it’s huge and she’s tiny and she probably won’t like it. FAIL.

Since I’ve never seen my mom wear a hat in the Winter, I decided to make her a head band. Well I restarted this sucker a few times because it was HUUUUGGGGGEEE. Even modified it’s still freaking gigantic. However, the Malabrigo was nice to work with, despite it being wool and the pattern is cool: Calorimetry. That is, if you’re into huge ass head bands. Which I think I kind of am. Huh.

In order to face the week, I needed blackberry pancakes. (Mondays can be tough!) I ate them for breakfast and lunch, and they helped, like they always do. Moving on…

I knit this over the weekend for my friend H. (of wedding shawl fame) because tomorrow is her birthday! I just couldn’t wait any longer, so I gifted this yesterday, which means there is absolutely no danger of spoiling the surprise. I used more of my Hello Yarn Five Plum Pie handspun, and I still have about ten yards leftover — truly, a never-ending skein.

Calorimetry was one of the first patterns I attempted to knit — and while I finished it rather quickly, my skein of filatura di crosa 127 print (or whatever the pattern calls for, because I had not yet learned to substitute) won the day, and I finally understood why gauge matters. My first calorimetry was enormous! This time around, I read up on the pattern and followed some common modifications:

I cast on 88 stitches using size 6 needles, and worked only as many (decreasing stitch count) short rows as seemed like half of the width I was hoping for, and then completed the same number of (increasing stitch count) short rows to get to the other side, being careful not to run out of yarn.

Yay! I tried this on to take some pictures, and now that my hair is longer, I really like this. I may need to make one for myself.

I did manage to ply the polwarth. Here’s what it looks like before washing/thwacking:

This may be the softest, squishiest yarn I have ever spun. It is hanging to dry in the kitchen, and I can’t help but pet it each time I walk by.

In keeping with “hat-tober,” I cast on for yet another handspun hat — Cosy’s Super Hero Helmet Hat. I won the pattern on her blog a few weeks ago, and I am knitting it out of some of my earlier wheelspun: AVFKW Woolly Wonders corriedale in The Candle’s Nimble Flame. I’m using size 10.5 needles, and I love the squoosh of the garter stitch.

Apparently Boh also had a very busy day. (While I read, wrote, cleaned, knit, plied, grocery-shopped, cooked, etc., Boh moved bones back and forth from his box, growled at the electrician through the window, took notes on squirrel movement, and perhaps dreamed of rabbits, chipmunks, and deer.)

makes the handknit librarian a very dull girl indeed.

I’m on day six of what is scheduled to be thirteen straight days of work and in combination with a lot to do for both classes it really isn’t very good for my mental health. Oh, and factor in the architect ripping up half the kitchen floor with the consequent dirt and chaos and I’m really crazy in the head. Stepping in wet concrete while wearing suede shoes yesterday was almost the final straw.

Sanity may be saved by sneaking a day off work next week and going into NYC with the architect. While he goes to some boring IT thingy at the Hilton mid-town, I’ll be hanging out at the NYPL, getting fish & chips for lunch at A Salt & Battery, then walking down to Purl in SoHo to drool over yarn. I have to buy some sock yarn for a swap for the blankie, but I know it’s going to be hard to restrain myself …

Progress is slow on In Vino Wisteria. I’m finally down to the cabled section at the bottom of the body, but it’s just going to get slower and slower as I go along because there are more and more cables. Still, it does look great, and hopefully the sleeves will move along more quickly when I get to them.

I did manage to finish’s Grant’s (giant) CMU toe-up socks and he likes them (shown here with a “normal” sized sock for comparison):

I also made a nice hat for Alexandra (A Slouch for All Seasons) in Moda Dea Bamboo Wool which was really nice to knit with:

What is most likely only the first Meret I’ll make is finished (and I don’t think Phoebe has taken it off yet):

I’ve managed to start a little bit more holiday knitting too. A Calorimetry for the girl in some luscious Malabrigo Dos (it really feels like butter) supplemented with some Woolen Rabbit laceweight. The colour combination looks great:

FO’s, that is. One I finished rather a while ago, and the other is something I whipped up during a movie because my current project was too complicated for movie knitting.

Pattern: None, just a chart of a design I made up.
Yarn: Random scraps of acrylic yarn
Needles: US 8/5 mm I think

This was a present for my friend Sarah, whose birthday was in early June. I spent a week frantically knitting it and sent it off to her in time for her birthday, but I forgot to snap a picture. Fortunately, she is my roommate at school this year, so I snapped one for Ravelry and for the blog.

Pattern: Calorimetry
Yarn: My handspun!
Needles: US 8/5mm straights
Mods: Cast on 88, did far fewer row 5 repeats

My first FO with my handspun!

This pattern is perfect for just a little bit of yarn, which is exactly what I had. I actually have a fair amount of yarn left over, though I’m not sure what to do with it. Perhaps it can be a stripe on a crazy handspun hat. The barber-poling of the colors looks great, but kind of obscures the ribbing. I don’t really care though; it still looks awesome. And I made it! From wool to yarn to dyed yarn to FO. : ) I will definitely be getting a lot of wear out of it come winter because it’ll add a bright splash of color to my winter wardrobe and so I can brag that I made both the Calorimetry and the yarn itself. WIN.

Coming soon to a blog near you: Inchies. Beatles things (part of which is SO FUCKIN’ COOL I can’t stand it), and more knitting. I started an awesome cardigan and scrapped a project I’d been working on for a few days (it just wasn’t working out). Stay tuned!

On Sundays, I tend to veg out and knit.

Having just finished the chemo cap (see previous post), I started trying to figure out what I wanted to make next.

My friend, Rabbitrescuer, is going to be working on her first pair of socks. We’re going to do a KAL (that’s knit-a-long for all of my non-knitting readers). I am honored that she is allowing me to walk her through the process.

We had been discussing which pattern to use, but we had not made a firm decision yet. I knew she was working a 12-hour shift on Sunday, so that left me in a quandary.

What to do with myself.

You know you’re addicted to knitting when you wander around the house, lost for something to do despite having ironing and dirty dishes giving you the evil eye.

I managed to ignore them, as usual, and racked my brain.

Poor brain. It cannot take too much.

I considered casting on a pair of socks for the fun of it…something I could work on until we started our KAL. However, I was afraid to commit my needles in fear of needing them for whatever we would settle on. I only own one set of each size of needles, so I’m stuck there.

In desperation, I meandered to one of my yarn baskets and pulled out the first skein my hand touched.

It was this:

Araucania Nature Wool Chunky #134

It had been a gift from another knitter who sent it to me along with an oddball blanket I was working on at the time.

Here it is all wound up:

Araucania Nature Wool Chunky #134

With the yarn in hand, I sat down at the computer and pulled up Ravelry. I love Ravelry for its search feature.

After plugging in the yarn, I found many, many pages of projects. Most of them were too large for my one skein. I found myself trying to decide between a couple of patterns, finally settling on Calorimetry, a free pattern from the Winter 2006 issue of Knitty.

What a fast knit! It only took me about three hours. I made myself finish binding off before going to bed at the late hour of 11:30.

I used the double rib invisible bind-off from the Interweave Knits Fall 2008 issue. If you have this issue, it’s worth taking a look at. I just love the finished edge…invisible, as promised.

A couple of notes before you get to see pictures (unless you’re cheating and already scrolled down). I only cast on 92 stitches. This pattern is notorious for turning out too big. I also went down to a size 7 needle. It fits using the hole closest to the end. I do have big hair, though. If you make this, you might want to venture nearer to 100 stitches.

The pattern only required 45 grams of yarn, so it’s a great way to use up some of that stash you might have. I still have about half a skein left.

And now, here are some pictures of my project:

The color in this picture is a little bright.

Thank goodness I save all of the extra buttons that come with my clothes. I scrounged around and came up with one that worked.

This is the true color.

Ok…off to take a peek at the pattern that Rabbit and I decided on. More information on that later!

A little while back, the same day in fact as the making of the stockings, my friend Libby and I decided we needed to to try a little experiment with some wool yarn I had gotten in a yarn swap. The yarn we wanted to dye is wound in those little pats that aren’t really a ball and don’t pull from the center well, I like to call them cow pie balls because that is what they look like when squashed a bit. Kind of like this.

The thing about this that intrigued us is that because it is loosely wound, dye would travel through the ball, making a kind of gradation, the question was, how good a gradation. So we popped a ball into my smallest stainless steel sauce pan with just enough water, heated it up and injected red and yellow acid dye into the outer layer of the ball. After a minute or so we added the vinegar, turned down the heat to let it set and Libby went home. The next day, when it was cool I rinsed the ball, let it dry and then kind of forgot about it.

Then last month Libby came over again and demanded to see the ball, she hadn’t forgotten! So we pulled it out and re-skeined it on my niddy noddy. Libby took it home to play with and took some photos.

Re-skeined

Of course we wanted to know what it looked like made up into something so she whipped up a quick Calorimetry headband.

Red Hot!!!

We where both very pleased with how the gradation worked out and that the speckled effect of the colors didn’t create any blocky color patterns. Libby is not in love with the colors we used but I am so I will probably end up wearing this one and we will just “have” to dye up another ball for Libby in a color she likes. All in all we agree that our hypothesis was confirmed.

Well that was possibly the worst week at work ever!! I was so pleased when it got to 5pm yesterday.

Well that was possibly the worst week at work ever!! I was so pleased when it got to 5pm yesterday.
It was quite a good week knitting-wise though. I have restarted the Demeter vest that I started knitting in May 2008 with some Cherry Tree Hill Supersock in Wild Cherry colour. I stopped knitting it in June last year as I got to the armhole area and wasn’t sure how to continue. I loved Miriam’s pattern but I wanted to change it to make the back higher and the straps closer together so that I wasn’t constantly worrying that my bra was showing at work. Then I got stuck and couldn’t figure out how exactly to do that so I haven’t knitted it at all until last Sunday. I MADE myself pick it up and start again – I was determined to finish it before I would allow myself to cast on a new project. Bossing myself around worked, so I looked at the pattern, the Demeter vest I knitted last January out of Elle Cotton DK and the part knitted one, did some measuring and just went for it. Almost a week later I have finished knitting the front, back, all four straps and am halfway round knitting the lace edging on the bottom. I would show you a picture of it in progress but unfortunately my camera is not playing at the moment. I think I need to get some new batteries.

I did manage to take this picture of the hot water bottle cover I knitted at the beginning of January for Kathy at work . It only took a week to knit, and is a smaller version of the one I made for myself.
I haven’t got a picture but I also knitted a Calorimetry over Christmas for my friend Vivienne, I just need to post it to her now. It’s exactly the same as this one I knitted for Keirsten last January. And it means that I have some left over yarn that I can make into a teapot cosy for me at some point.
Improvers: Drawing and Sketching started last Tuesday and we spent the evening doing a still life to remind us of the skills we learnt before Christmas doing the Introduction course.

Then this week we started the Colour part of the course and painting a colour wheel using the three primary colours. It was really interesting, I learnt a lot about mixing colours. I’m hoping this part of the course will help me with my knitting and other crafts.

These labels were a Christmas present from my lovely friend Nic and I can’t wait to finish Demeter so that I can sew one of them in the back!! I’m going to get the scarf I gave Bex back and sew one in it for her too! You can order your own here.

I finally got myself all set up to do some fusing fabric with my new soldering iron. I haven’t yet managed to make anything worth showing but it’s fun practicing.

Mr Mog doesn’t like matching socks so one toe was done in the yellow/orange and one in the contrast yarn. He loves them and they fit him. What more can you ask of a knitted item?
Now for the other part of my posting. I am allergic to the nickel part of my knitpicks harmony needles:( My hands are manky and I’ve narrowed it down to the needles. Now I am not going to give up my knitting, it serves me well as a meditational aid and as therapy for arthritic/rheumatic joints. I am not going to give up my knitpicks either as they make the knitting much easier. But saying all that I can’t go on with my hands affected so much. I’ve read that other people with this reaction paint the nickel with clear nail varnish to stop it. That is what I’m going to try so wish me luck.
The sun is fabulous today and we had a walk in our local park to see if it was waking up. As you can see from these pictures, spring is in the air.

there were flowers on show

in odd corners under trees.
There were squirrels
and buds on trees, what more could I ask?

Ganz schön kalt in Deutschland!

Anyone else think this is funny? I took very few pictures on my trip home for Thanksgiving. Just lazy I guess. But when I saw this on my MIL’s mantle, I just had to take a picture. Leave it to my MIL to come up with putting Jesus with John McCain & Sarah Palin. Ha! She said she wasn’t trying to make a political statement, but she is very religious and republican, so I thought maybe this was her way of trying to make some kind of point.

I did get a lot of knitting done while I was gone. Instead of my usual packing enough projects for a month or two, I only took what had to be done soon. So I managed to finish my socks that I have only been working on for what seems to be forever. I also finished one of my husband’s Christmas socks, but I’m having a hard time motivating myself to start the other.

And I made another hat from my handspun Alpaca just like the one I knit for my husband’s birthday, only a little shorter this time. My son called me not long ago and said that all he wanted for Christmas was for me to knit him a hat like the one I made for his dad. I usually don’t knit hats for my son because he always ends up losing them or he gives them away and then asks me to make him another. I also made another Calorimetry out of a yarn that I can’t remember the name of at the moment, but I bought it when I was in Ohio. I think these can become quite addictive!

Last but not least, I ordered some silk from Treenway Silks for the shop. Part of the order was 2.2 pounds of silk cocoons. That’s a lot in case you were wondering. Anyhow, I’ve been wanting to work with the cocoons for a long time. There are so many neat and unusual things you can do with them. Here is a little practice pendant I made. I dyed the cocoon and then split it in half and added beads and silver.

I did some stash enhancement this weekend while out and about looking for an outfit for a company christmas party. I really did not need to add to my stash, I must admit I did entertain the idea of sneaking it over to my side of the bed so Lossy did not notice but I’m just not like that. I got this to make TP a Calorimetry after making one the below with some Vero I had left over, I was amazed how quick and satisfying it was to make.

I think TP’s really suites her and she love it.

The jumper for TP took a little holiday this weekend when I mucked up the neckline. So much for the shawl look I was going for, I really should have read a pattern with a neckline like I wanted before charging ahead, they are not constructed the way I though so I am having to change the design, but TP asures me she still likes it. This is what it looked like before I frogged it, I now know how to fix it so will get stuck in next weekend.

I’m really loving having my own shop and being surrounded by so many wheels and and so much fiber. Thing is I don’t feel like I should be raiding the fiber from my shop so I feel like I have nothing to spin. ha! I do believe I need to get over that! I also need to get busy dyeing more fiber, the hand dyed stuff is flying out!

I love rigid heddle weaving, probably more than weaving on my floor looms. So I decided to add small looms to my shop and I got 3 new Cricket Looms from Schacht a couple of days ago. The Cricket has a small weaving width that is perfect for scarves and smallish projects. I wasn’t sure I’d like it because it is so small, but I love this little loom! Right now I’m weaving some mug rugs with some vintage fabric strips that my mother in law gave me when she had to destash because she was moving from her farm to the city. I really didn’t know what I was going to do with this fabric but someone had taken the time to cut all these strips by hand and sew them together so I felt that they needed to be used for something. I love woven mug rugs. They certainly aren’t as absorbent as coaster stones, but I like looking at them.

The Fricke order arrived yesterday and with it was an E-Spinner. I did a little spinning on it last night and I love it! Now I feel like I can conquer all that yardage that I’ll need to spin to make a sweater or pi shawl from the Icelandic roving I bought this summer (the Icelandic is from my personal stash, so no guilt)!

Somewhere in the midst of all that has been going on with opening the shop I also have a FO! One of the girls from my knitting group brought in the Calorimetry that she knitted. I tried it on and then decided that I had to make one. I always liked this pattern, but because of my short hair I thought it wouldn’t look right on me. Turns out, it is really cute on. However, the picture of me wearing it is not so cute so all you get is to see the knitting The yarn is Big Mexiko and I ran out with a row and a half to go. Luckily I had some yarn in the stash that went so well with it that you can’t even tell that I ran short on yardage. Oh and I’m thinking of letting my hair grow out. We’ll see if I have the patience!

So I was searching through patterns last night on ravelry for hats. I have to make DS a new hat and

So I was searching through patterns last night on ravelry for hats. I have to make DS a new hat and I really would like a good idea of how to decrees correctly (aka a pattern to follow). I also want to make myself a hat. Although I have a lot of hats around, I kinda…want a cool one…:/ All the ones we have are useful. I mean they keep my head warm, but most of them are pretty dorky and I really just don’t want a bobbly thing on the top of my head. Anyways, in my searches I found this fabulous pattern by Kathryn Schoendorf called Calorimetry. It’s so flippin’ cute I can hardly stand myself! I wanted to start on it last night but I couldn’t print the pattern (due to the printer being in the room we’re sleeping in so I was kinda chomping at the bit. But I got it printed today and am thrilled. I can hardly wait to start knitting it! I totally need something for my head, and my hair is always getting in my way. I think this is a happy medium for a while anyways. I’ll have to revert back to dorky hats when it gets really cold. But for a little while I can use this.

In other news, we got the food out of my in-laws garden harvested, but after doing that (and getting little sleep last night) I was exhausted and gave up for the day. Tonight is going to be a hard freeze, but then the rest of the week we’re going to get so much warmer. It actually made me feel pretty angry. But, what to do?

Also Dh finished hooking up everything for the heat! Hip Hip Hooray!! It’s actually getting warm in here and we don’t have that insanely noisy space heater running all the time. This is very exciting.

I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like to because I’m simply too busy knitting!

A couple of weeks ago I made myself a Calorimetry, out of this gorgeous skein of Malabrigo Silky Merino. There’s no way a camera can capture the true colors of this yarn. It’s simply perfect, all my favorite colors. I think the yarn works well with the pattern, I’ve been wearing it a lot lately!

Calorimetry

I’ve started my first Christmas present, a Turn a Square hat (Ravelry link) for Dave. It’s going so quickly, and I love how it’s turning out.

Turn a Square hat

I’m using Noro Silk Garden (my first Noro!) and Valley Yarns Northampton in Fawn for the MC. Northampton is the “generic” WEBS version of Cascade 220. I really like it and it’s so soft that I’m considering it for a sweater! I love the selection of colors they have.

Finally, I couldn’t help but cast on these Froot Loop socks in the skein of Noelle’s Noodles I got from Eat.

Froot Loop socks

These are going so quickly, I can hardly believe it. This is probably because my past attempts at socks were straight stockinette, which is so boring! This pattern is easy to memorize and fun to knit! I was worried at first since I’m getting horrible laddering between needles, but the fabric is so stretchy that I don’t think it will make a difference. I’m so confident that I can finish these quickly that I joined Socktoberfest.
