The past couple of weeks have been dragging me down lately. With a slew of articles to finish, I decided last night to just surf the net and find some humor to brighten my mood. And here’s what I found…

So people- how do you manage the time where your birthday is coming up?

It’s hard, at least for me… Even though this year it seemed like it’s going really well, the pre-birthday depression is getting me May be it’s because one expects that it comes- i hate this. Just because we think, that something should happen, it does??? Crazy, ha?

But try not to think about it- it doesn’t really works for me. The good thing is, that it should be over with the birthday- which is tomorrow. That’s good- not much time for pre-birthday depression. Sometimes it comes month before it, it’s like pre-birthday black hole…

In the meantime I’ll try to grow up

NaNoWriMo tar det meste av min tid og mine krefter, så dagens tegneserieanbefaling blir kort og søt. Jeg tenkte bare minne litt om en gammel favoritt, nemlig Bill Wattersons Calvin & Hobbes, kjent for oss her i Norge som Tommy & Tigern. At denne for lengst avsluttede serien stadig kommer ut i reprise her til lands sier det meste om populæriteten til den umulige gutten og tøytigeren hans.

Tommy kan være en kilde til inspirasjon for oss som jobber med å skape fortellinger denne måneden. Han er jo som kjent en mester i koke sammen de mest fantastiske historier.Som for eksempel de om romhelten Spiff.

Hans kreativitet kommer også tydelig til syne i sakprosaen som vi kan se i denne stripen:

Nylig hadde jeg samtale med en av mine mest tegneseriekyndige venner. Han fortalte om en teori som sier at filmen Fight Club handler om Tommy & Tigeren som voksne. Tommy som frustrert identitetssøkende forbruker, og Tyler Durden som den voksnere, råere utgaven av Tigern. Om ikke annet setter dette både tegneserien og filmen i et nytt og interessant perspektiv.

Nå skal jeg skrive de siste hundre ordene som må til for at jeg skal nå dagens nanowrimokvote.

A short blog post today: I followed through on my awesome costume idea, and I even dragged my unsuspecting girlfriend into the mix! I was Calvin. She was Hobbes. And admittedly, my costume isn’t a lot of work, but I did shave my beard for it, so I think I deserve a little credit.

It’s all in the mind, you know.

Blame it on my lack of a classical education, but it was only a couple of years ago I realized that the word ‘hysteria’ is a feminist issue. It comes via the Greek for ‘uterus’, hence υστερία. The ancients believed that psychological-based problems (as opposed to physical ailments) only affected women, and therefore had their source in the womb.

…in Greco-Roman medical literature hysteria was believed to develop when the female reproductive system was inactive or ungratified—Bandini et al.

All this had passed me by, and I had never made the connection. I’d quite happily describe certain male colleagues as ‘hysterical’ without implying I thought they were female, or indeed that the quality was particularly feminine. It was quite a surprise to me that certain people felt very strongly about this, and I was saddened at the subsequent reduction of available vocabulary.

However, a paper in J Sex Med caught the eye of one of our Faculty just recently, in which the whole basis of hysteria (in the sense of a diagnostic entity of neurosis) has switched sides, so to speak. (Update: evaluation on f1000 Medicine.) By examining testosterone levels and looking for associations with psychopathologies in men seeking treatment for sexual dysfunction, Bandini et al. found that depression and anxiety were negatively correlated with testosterone levels. Of course: real men don’t cry, after all.

But strikingly,

histrionic/hysterical traits were strongly and positively associated with elevated T[estosterone]

(Higher testosterone was also associated, unsurprisingly, with better self-reported sexual function, higher blood flow in the penis and cough bigger balls.)

So what they are saying is that certain supposedly (by the ancients, at least) feminine characteristics, to which men were obviously immune (not having a womb), in fact have their source in uniquely male anatomy, turning the accepted (and vaguely misogynistic) wisdom on its head.  ’Better’ sexual function (which I assume means ‘more of it’), and higher social dominance and mate-seeking behaviour all correlate with histrionic/hysterical traits. From an evolutionary perspective, the authors speculate that these could all be markers, or signals, of hormonal quality. Hysteria ex orchida.

I’m now envisaging flouncing out of particularly tiresome meetings claiming my hormones are making me do it. More seriously, this possibly means I can go go back to using ‘hysterical’ without my feminist credentials slipping—at least as long as I carry a copy of this paper around with me. Besides, nobody really cares about etymology anymore, do they?
