The SMX-C14 is ideal for those on the go, and offer an impressive 10x optical zoom paired with Hyper Image Stabilization to help reduce blurry footage. It features a 230,000-dot, swiveling 2.7-inch wide LCD screen, which allows users to effortlessly frame their subjects and review their footage. Similar to the full-HD HMX-R10, the new SMX-C14 boasts Samsung’s Active Angle Lens. This unique design helps reduce fatigue by allowing consumers to grip the camcorder in a more relaxed manner, easing the overall stress on their wrist and elbow. Unlike traditional camcorders, the relaxed grip also removes the LCD screen from the user’s line of sight, enabling them to always keep an eye on their subject while recording.

The new SMX-C14 features 16 GB of internal Samsung flash memory and is expandable via an SD/SDHC memory card slot. Thanks to H.264 compression, which drastically enhances recording times when used with standard definition video, users can record over six hours of footage directly to the SMX-C14’s built-in memory. The SMX-C14 also offers substantial battery life, providing more than two hours and forty minutes of record time on a single charge.

The SMX-C14 also incorporates Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program called intelli studio. The built-in intelli-studio program allows the ability to connect the camcorder to any computer via USB and edit and play video without having to install supporting software. intelli-studio also facilitates the process of uploading users’ content to popular video sharing Web sites. For added convenience, a one-touch “upload” button provides a direct connection to YouTube, further reducing the number of steps needed to upload footage. In addition, the camcorder also allows basic on-camera editing, including the ability to merge and split video files.

With Samsung’s new K-Series camcorders, you can enjoy near full-HD quality video for the price of a standard definition camcorder. The SMX-K40 records exceptional standard definition video at a resolution of 720 x 480, and then can be played back on an HDTV in near full-HD quality thanks to advanced upscaling technology and HDMI connectivity. With a built-in HDMI output on the camera and HDMI cable (sold separately), simply connect the camcorder directly to an HDTV for near full-HD playback.

Significantly more reliable than a standard digital zoom, which negatively affects the quality of the image, Samsung’s new Intelli-Zoom allows you to go beyond the camcorder’s 52x optical zoom. The K-Series also features Samsung’s advanced Optical Image Stabilizer, ensuring that video will be shake-free, whether zoomed out or using the camcorder at it’s full 65x Intelli-Zoom. Furthermore, the camcorder’s world class Schneider-KREUZNACH lens delivers the quality and performance needed to help capture the most impressive video possible.

The SMX-K40 does not have internal storage and requires the use the of a SD/SDHC card.

“Better Camera the second time around”
Purchased this camera for an important family trip. First camera was bad and was not able to bring it with me. Amazon quickly replaced it for me with a new one that worked just fine but could not get the replacement until I came back. The issue was with the auto focus feature, or lack of. Using the zoom even the slightest made the picture so blurry it was not even viewable. The replacement camera seems to work just fine(for now). It is a new model and have not found many reviews for it. I will keep this one since it is working fine and the price was right.

“Awesome camera for the price”
I bought this camera to take videos of my son and maybe do a little bit of amateur filming as well. To start this camera is very small. It literally can fit in the palm of your hand. The LCD screen is nice but at times can make it hard to view what you are recording. The video that gets recorded is pretty good. I have noticed at times that when I zoom in and out the picture gets blurry. I have not been able to try the HDMI video quality on my TV because my regular HDMI cable does not fit the video cameras HDMI slot. All in all this is a pretty good camera for the purpose of shooting home videos. The video files come in a format that allows you to edit them fairly easily.

“i like it…”
I spent about a month researching for the right handheld camcorder for me. it came down to the new flip mino and this samsung. i just couldn’t justify spending extra 50~60 bucks for flip mino over this samsung. fortunately i got this for $[...] and i noticed it went back up to $[...]. i was pretty nervous about the samsung because of all the bad reviews, especially on QVC website. but then again, it looked like people who bought on QVC sounded like they thought they were buying a digital camera and surprised at the fact that the picture quality wasn’t as good. i think they probably would have written the same negative review if they bought the flip mino. (where’s the flash? where’s the camera function? no zoom? no macro?)

i read whole bunch of reviews about how hard it is to figure out how to use this thing… are you kidding me? i got this one yesterday, charged overnight and started using even without looking at any manual. really?!?!? is it that hard to browse through the menu and select the options and setting you like? is it that hard to press that little button with the red dot and the video camera icon? heck, they even made it so simple that once you connect the devise to your computer for the first time, it automatically downloads the software for you.

honestly, i just started using this today so my review might be premature but so far i have no problem with it and i’m glad i’ve decided to buy this one. my honest rating would probably 3 and half to 4 stars but decided to give 5 stars just to offset the 1 star reviews.

“Samsung made a great little camera”
I have read a lot of negative reviews about this camera and I can honestly say, “I don’t get it”. some people said there were lipsync issues, lousy video and bad still shots. I have put this little HD camcorder through it’s paces and have had no issues at all. Is it the best camera out there? No, but it is far from terrible as some have said.

Easy to operate with some decent features and great quality. Now if you are expecting to get 500 dollars worth of camera for the 149.00 price point, then you will probably be disappointed. This baby takes better video than some full size vhs camcorders I had back in the day and I had to carry those on my shoulder. I’m sure the tech on the mini camcorders will get even better as time goes by but these minis are still pretty new.

I can definitely recommend this camera.

“Sorry, but no go…”
I was hoping the other reviewers were missing something, but they were not. When they said the video quality was very poor, they were not joking. Pictures were not too bad, but the video and audio are way out of sync if you go anywhere above 720/30, and way too grainy.

The Samsung SMX-C10 is ideal for those on the go, and offers an impressive 10x optical zoom paired with Hyper Image Stabilization to help reduce blurry footage. It features a 230,000-dot, swiveling 2.7-inch wide LCD screen, which allows users to effortlessly frame their subjects and review their footage. Similar to the full-HD HMX-R10, the SMX-C10s boast Samsung’s Active Angle Lens.

The SMX-C10 does not feature internal memory and requires the use of SD/SDHC media. It also offers substantial battery life, providing more than two hours and forty minutes of record time on a single charge.

The SMX-C10 also incorporate Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program called intelli studio. The built-in intelli-studio program allows consumers to connect the camcorder to any computer via USB and edit and play their video without having to install supporting software. intelli-studio also facilitates the process of uploading users’ content to popular video sharing Web sites. For added convenience, a one-touch “upload” button, available directly on the SMX-C10, provides a direct connection to YouTube, further reducing the number of steps needed to upload footage. In addition, the camcorder also allows basic on-camera editing, including the ability to merge and split video files.

“Pretty good but some flaws”
I have to preface this by saying I just received the camcorder today so I am still learning the functions.

Video quality seems to be perfectly fine to me. In bright light the colors look very vibrant and true to life. In dim light things are a little less colorful as you would expect. There are a multitude of scene modes which should really help if you take the time to set the right one for the conditions you are in. There is a setting for very low light conditions; a setting for back lighting, spot lighting, sports/fast motion, fountains/waterfalls, fluorescent light, tungsten… and on and on. There is also a setting for the exposure if you need to manually override the camera. You can also focus manually if necessary and there is a face detection mode. If you whip the thing around it will have a hard time focusing. The key is to make slow movements of the camera and hold a second or two if necessary to allow the auto focus to do its thing.

This device is light as a feather and it is tiny. It fits comfortably in the hand. The angled lens takes a little getting used to. Out of the box the battery is very fast to charge.

The time lapse recording feature is very cool and is something I can definitely see myself playing around with quite a lot.

The built-in studio software seems to work fine. I don’t plan to do lots of intensive editing. I had some trouble getting the software to download to my desktop PC but the laptop had no issues.

My biggest issues at the moment are that it appears the camera does not save all of your settings and reverts back to some default states every time you turn it on. This is quite annoying as you have to go back into all of the menus to set everything up each time. Some things do stay on like scene mode selection or image stabilization but other things like the fader selection revert back to off. Not sure why it doesn’t save everything as you leave it.

The other issue is that digital zoom only operates when you have the image stabilizer turned off.

This one does not have still photo capability. You need to upgrade to the C14 if that is important to you.

I really wish it had a lens cover. I can see lots of fingerprints ending up there.

I am very excited to have this thing and look forward to taking lots of video on my upcoming trip to Asia.

“Early signs are very promising – great hand position”
I bought this for a vacation, I wanted something, light, portable and easy to use, moreover something with a good battery life.

I have been very impressed so far with the Samsung in every way. It’s tiny, but the most used buttons are easy to use and operate even with big hands, and are duplicated on the menu flip out screen and on the unit top itself.

There’s No internal memory, which I did not mind, why do I need 32MB of internal when I can slip in an 8GB or 16GB SDHC or regular SD card? [both work fine by the way].

Recording in H.264 codec enables the SAMSUNG C10 to capture up to 6 hrs. and 20 min. of high quality video footage on a 16GB SD card, 3 hrs 10 min on an 8GB card and so on. Phenomenal 160 minute battery life is enabled by the efficient power use of the 8th Generation DSP Chip and H.264 codec recording, much better than most of it’s competitors in this price range.

Picture is crystal clear on built in 2.7″ viewer and very clear and crisp on playback on a TV or computer. I have not had the camera long so have not had time to fully evaluate the software and other features.

One thing I love is that the lens is tilted up 25 degrees so you don’t get “wrist lock” trying to get that perfect shot, it will pan and scan with a much more comfortable hand position. Not perfect by any means, but for under $200 I’m impressed.
PRO’s

Very easy to use

Lightweight

Very compact

Rechargable battery

10x Optical Zoom

A ton of auto and changeable features for full control

Can be charged via AC adapter OR USB

Software runs directly off the camera, so no need to edit on a PC or you choose not to

CONS

No Flash (even though it has a low light setting which is reasonable)

No Camera or Still picture function (just video only)

No internal memory

“This is cute!”
I usually don’t use the word ‘Cute’, but looking at the C10, I just said ‘This is cute’ without even realizing it.

The SMX-C10 fits the word minimalism well. It s a pocket type small size product enough to fit anywhere, and it minimizes the button part to give easy feeling for people as if it breaks the prejudice Camcorders are complicated . Applying High glossy UV coating and mirror material with great finishing are so satisfactory. (When it comes to design, I could see the difference from other Samsung products. I wasn t satisfied with the design of former products, but I like the C10 very much.)

Reviews from Customers

“Great camera!”
You should know that I am probably the least “tech-y” person on the planet, so I bought this product with some hesitation, especially given that it didn’t have stellar reviews.

I’ve tried it out a few times to video my toddlers, always inside during the daytime. The light was fine, we didn’t use any extra special lighting. The HD quality was tremendous on our HD tv (although we had some trouble hooking up the sound – turns out we needed to plug that part into the sound system, not the tv. duh!) I was shocked at the quality of the video.
I thought the microphone did a reasonable job picking up the sound from a couple of yards away from my kids. It was really easy to transfer the files from the camera to my mac laptop… although I have no idea how to edit a movie or make a dvd yet.

I think someone had some concern about no image stabilization, but I had no problems keeping the camera still and the movies didn’t come out shaky. You can easily hold it in your right hand, and use the palm of your left hand to help keep it stable. The zoom in and out wasn’t exactly smooth when playing back the movie, more jerky, but for $150? Are you kidding?

“Best Deal Around.”
Bought one of these for my brother and his wife and after seeing how well it works I think I’ll get one for myself. Video plays without noticeable artifacts on a 42″ plasma and the images move smoothly. I was amazed to see such solid compression in only 2GB/hr. Uses standard Quicktime files! Hallelujah! Charges with USB and accepts SD memory up to 32GB. Indoor performance is nothing to shout about but certainly useable (no camera this size can really impress in low light). The sound is rather poor, as the other reviews suggest, but I can live with it. The build quality and control layout are not great but explain the low price. The moral of the story here is that you can bring it along most anywhere without a fuss. And when it comes to memorable moments, any shot is better than no shot, right?. I think I’ll keep one of these tucked away in a pocket from now on. A steal for this price.

“Excellent entry level HD (you get what you pay for)”
To begin with, this is -not- a conventional digital camcorder.

Unless you find it too toy-like as others have found, it seems to be delivering exactly what it promises:

The lowest cost HD DVR for sale on the market.

A point-and-shoot eight megapixel digital camera.

Digital playback device that can show Quicktime media (when storage cards greater than four gigs are used (max 32 gig SDHC) (compatible with Apple products).

The quality is excellent and the only drawback I’ve seen so far is that the playback speaker is too small and delivers very nasty tinny audio. Much like the audio from almost any small microspeaker. Use your headphones when watching playback. Much better.

Of all the video resolutions you can use,(there are three) the smallest (CIF)(352×240) gives you the most bang for the buck in storage….

A two gig SD card will hold up to 320 minutes of video. That’s -five- hours plus! You’ll need to recharge the battery at least a couple of times to fill a one or two gig card at that rate.

The middle resolution is (D1) (720×480) is very close to VGA (slightly wider) and you can only cram 144 minutes full video onto a two gig SD.

The HD resolution is full true HD (1280×720) and will only record for 60 minutes before filling up that same two gig SD card. However, there are larger cards available now, and I still like have a few extra two gig cards in my pocket.

Battery life is estimated to be 90 minutes (factory spec) but I haven’t pushed that far yet. My other Aiptek, the IS-DV, maxxes out at VGA (640×480)resolution, cannot handle longer than 48 minutes before depleting the battery.

The difference? The IS-DV is 2 year old design, and Aiptek is pushing the envelope.

Final verdict?

This is a very good product, worthy of consideration from both first time buyers and jaded users who are used to far more expensive gadget loaded camcorders.

It weighs nothing, a cellphone is slightly smaller, and the battery lasts and lasts. It has very few moving parts, and only one mechanical slide switch that operates the macro mode focusing.

I can’t wait to see what’s next, Aiptek. Perhaps even smaller? More resolution? Image stabilization?

I’d rate this a nine out of ten, the only fault is that playback speaker.

And it’s not really a deal breaker, in my opinion.

Reviews from Customers

“Expected disappointment – but was very impressed”
This camera has great image quality, and was a great buy. But one thing that frustrated me (before buying) was that I couldn’t find much info about the more advanced specs.

But luckily, I have done the homework for you

Here are some things you might want to know:

-The CMOS is 5MP native (resolution: 2592 x 1944)

don’t bother with the 8MP it just ‘blows up’ the image (interpolation)

-The lens, even though the image quality is excellent, is the weak point of this camera. Its a fixed focus without any optical zoom. Theres only digital zoom which decreases the quality the farther its zoomed in, but not too badly.

The 2 focus modes,

Normal: From 30cm to infinity. Best for general purpose video recording. Nothing is really out of focus unless its too close to the camera. Though the image can be slow to clarify on certain patterns such as grass.

Macro: For close-ups. Objects/people look alot clearer/better when focused on than with the normal focus mode, and everything in the background is blurred. But you have to be sure the camera is the perfect distance away from the object so that its in focus.

On the camera, the top setting with the mountain/stick figure is normal focus mode and the lower setting with the flower shape is macro. There are also wide angle lenses available that fit this camera.

-The battery

Battery life for me is very good, but depends on your recording mode, screen brightness etc. Charge to 100% before turning it on (should take atleast 2-3 hours). Also sometimes the light seems to change randomly to show that its charged when its still charging. Theres a defect where the battery is loose inside and rattles around/loses contact with the terminals that make it turn off. Just improvise and put a piece of paper/cardboard below the battery to keep it from being loose.

-The screen is good quality, hard to see in bright daylight. No dead pixels. Camera turns on when you fold out the screen. There are controls on the side for video playback but I haven’t had to use any besides ‘power’.

-The mic is okay for me, but it tends to record the person behind the camera rather than whats in front.

-Records from AV-IN at 720 x 480 NTSC 29.97FPS

the quality is decent when I record from a satellite receiver (take advantage of this with pay-per-view). When played back on SDTV it looks nearly exactly as the original broadcast besides for some obvious static at the very top of the screen. Format: H264 @ 2.12mbits/sec Audio: AAC stereo 48.000khz BTW you can’t do composite-in.

-has TV-OUT with AV-out and Composite-out

You can do everything with TV-out activated that you can do normally, record vids/take pics/change settings. Video and picture quality is terrific, and they load instantly. If you lose 1 of the AV cables, they’re the same except for the colors.

-works with my sandisk 4gb Ultra II SDHC memory card

make sure your memory card is ‘high speed’ or else it probably can’t write data fast enough to keep up with the higher quality recording modes. I believe the memory limit is 32gb.

-recording modes:

1080p: 29.97FPS Data rate: 7.58mbits/sec at 1920×1080

720p 60f: 59.94FPS Data rate: 6.04mbits/sec at 1280×720

720p 30f: 29.97FPS Data rate: 4.10mbits/sec at 1280×720

‘DVD quality’: 59.94FPS Data rate: 3.57mbits/sec at 854×480

‘CIF’: 29.97FPS Data rate: 750.86kbits/sec at 320×240

All except ‘CIF’ are 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen)

Image quality is a bit grainy if the room is dark, though you can adjust white balance/exposure settings to fix this. I would say the best overall setting is 720p 60FPS. Theres no stabilization but its really stupid to complain that the footage is ’shaky’ when all you have to do is hold your arm more steady/hold it with 2 hands. After all the camera captures exactly what it sees and its lightweight. Theres a tripod mount too.

-tips for playback

The version of quicktime included on the CD is an old version that plays choppy on even the fastest computer. The best way to play back your vids in my opinion is to first:

1. Rename the file from .MOV to .HDMOV

2. Play the file with Windows Media Player

doing it this way uses the graphics card (GPU) to help play the video, instead of just the CPU. 60fps is more intensive than 1080p at 30fps. If you get an error about codecs, look up on google ‘k-lite codec pack’.

Now the biggest problem everyone has is that the format of the videos (.MOV) is incompatible/doesn’t work right with alot of editing software. Most people convert the video to another format which decreases the quality and takes forever. Are you ready for a simple solution that will prevent you hours of frustration?

The actual video captured is encoded to H.264 codec with AAC audio, the .MOV is just a container file. AVI, MP4, MKV and lots of others can hold H.264 video. So all you have to do is…

Rename FILE.MOV to FILE.MP4

easy as that…now the file should work in sony vegas and any other editing software that supports H264, and also play back fine with supporting media players. To rename on a PC: Tools->Folder Options->View->Hide extensions for known file types (uncheck the box)

(when importing to vegas 8.0 you have to keep trying to drag the file over the window until an outline appears or it will crash, only release the mouse if an outline appears. Keep trying with new codecs if it crashes/won’t work, its glitchy)

“Great for a full HD resolution, second-unit camera”
I bought this not expecting much and not having seen any reviews on the Web or in print. The product is a couple of months old to market. There’s some misinformation floating around out there — here are a few clarifications and highlights of the product from my week’s worth of testing. First, it does indeed shoot at a 16:9 aspect ratio even as the video resolution is 1440×1080p — you just need to be sure and apply an “anamorphic” pixel ratio (i.e., not square/1:1). Also, it is a fixed focus camera: The benefit is that there’s no noisy/slow auto-focusing mechanism, but the con (as with all fixed focus camcorders) is that low light performance suffers somewhat, while close-in subjects go out of focus (though there is a manual macro switch on this product). Big pluses include the fact that it’s charged via a super-standard mini-USB connector, and accepts up to a 32gb SDHC card. There is a tripod mounting hole but no electronic or mechanical image stabilization, no optical zoom, and no external microphone/audio in port.

In short, this makes for a great “second-unit” camcorder in cases where you don’t want to rough around with your primary HD camcorder, or where you want to strap this onto a skateboard and the like without worrying about lost investment. It’s wise to take the native H.264 files that are wrapped in .mov format and convert them to .avi or MPEG-2 .mpg files for further processing/editing/burning, as most systems will stutter trying to decode the native video files at 1080p/30 fps on-the-fly (i.e., even high-end video cards do not necessarily include hardware acceleration for files in this specific format). Although users appear to be especially enamored of the product’s 1440×720p/60 fps non-interlaced mode, I’m not convinced that their bias is based on the benefit of double the frames-per-second, instead of the mere shortcomings of their system’s hardware playback at 1080p/30 fps.

UPDATE: The following wide-angle lens attachment works perfectly with this camcorder, and I’m tempted to use it full-time as it not only widens your field of view, but in the process mildly reduces the inherent shake of your footage by “pulling back” a little farther.

“Aiptek A-HD+ great value”
I did a lot of research for an inexpensive HD camera. There are a ton of blogs and information out there for the AHD and AHD+. I have been very impressed. Like most others the sound is ok…but where it sets itself is the picture and price. I recently shot my son’s bday (all indoors) and compared it with a Mini DV camera I shot last year at the same place. Picture is better with the AHD+ and get this…it took all but 2 mins to move about 30 mins to my PC…guess how long it takes to move a mini DV to a PC – 30 mins. I purchased a 16GB card for it as 720/60fps eats memory…about 1GB per 15 min of footage. Sweet spot seems to be 720/60fps vs the other settings.

This ultra-compact camcorder adds an extra level of comfort to every shot you take. Its ergonomic design makes it easy to grip and hold long enough to catch that special memory in full high definition. And the 2.7″ touch screen gives you a great view to make sure it’s all captured. Forgot your camera at home? You can also take high-quality 9-megapixel digital still photos and then flip through them on your HDTV with family and friends.

“HMX-R10″
Just wanted to say, This camcorder is definitely worth 399. Great vids on all settings. Fits nice in my hand. Great for the average person who just wants to capture memorable family moments. Its my first camcorder so I can’t nit pick recording quality like some of these reviewers who are never satisfied. I watch the vids on my panasonic plasma and the quality seems excellent to me at this price point. If you want professional quality HD videos why are you considering a 400 dollar camcorder? I took it to a concert in a dark night club and I was very suprised at the quality even in low light conditions. I am very satisfied. Note; you can use Quicktime player or Itunes to watch the videos.

“Very pleased…4.5 stars/5″
I have had this one for about 2 weeks…. this replaces a bigger 1080i Sony HDR video camera (built in 30 gb spinning hard drive) that we purchased may 2007 for $1600 AND LOST… For this current price, this can’t be beat. I have had the chance to review both the movie quality and photo quality and still pleased., although it may be slightly inferior to my previous camera.

IT would not be fair to compare this camera to my older Sony, (kind of like comparing a nice point and shoot camera to one that that is an SLR)…

However, I would still buy this one for the price point..

Things that are different are:

Image stabilization…. Althought this one is so bad, it is not as forgiving as the Sony….partly because it is smaller, weighs much less and less likely to use 2 hands as we were with the Sony.

Compared to the Sony, this one is faster, more responsive and faster to download to and from.

The biggest thing about this camera is that this is a “point and shoot” video camera and not something that you will be using to film weddings professionally. For us, that was our primary use.

This camera does take gorgeous 1080i movies, however, the image quality is lessened indoors or under suboptimal lighting. You can take photos while shooting video, however, the picture resolutions are downgraded during this and we are starting to avoid doing this.

The Flash memory card is great!, the speed at which it “comes to life” is great.

The camera has a feature called Ique or something, that basically “optimizes” settings for those that don’t know how, or too lazy. As of now, we leave this setting on all the time.

The battery life is about 90-100 minutes… We charge it every 3-4 days.

Although there is no lens cover and it is “scratch resistant” this is something that I am a little leary of, and I can see how it can get scratched.

I was thinking about the angle at which the camera is set up, It is okay, it doesn’t take much to get used to, but in playing around, I find that the if the camera was flipped 180 degrees, this would be optimal and even more ergonomic (if it were like a pistol grip)… It is not really feasible to use it like this, because the movies come out upside down and the view screen is on the wrong side…

Finally, although this has a high megapixel still photo, when I was using the 12.0 megapixel setting, I found it almost impossible to keep it still enough to prevent blur.. I end up using it on 6mp…I am satisfied with these photos.

One last thing, when i went to repurchase this new camera, at first I was really interested in getting one “with a bigger built in hard drive” than my previous Sony with the 30 gb hard drive…. I think this was faulty thinking…if you had a larger hard drive.. you would be more likely to not download (or backup) the movies and risk losing them if something happened to your camera. (we lost 2 months of photos of a newborn from the last camera)… Second, I would strongly urge you to consider flash memory camera, either a SSD or flash based media. because of speed, battery and size and safety..

“Don’t know yet”
Incredibly small! Good quality. Does NOT have a hand strap, uses a little wrist strap instead. It makes holding it much tougher and getting to the buttons as well. Lots of settings up to FULL 1080p, future proofing your purchase. I still have an excellent Sony MiniDV which can shoot standard definition in a 16:9 format and still think think AVCHD has a ways to go. If you have a bluray burner and player, then it’s a no brainer. For anything else the importing, editing and burning/archiving process, is a chore. And we all thought technology was going to free us! It seems each iteration gets more complex and time consuming. Nice machine but I still don’t know. Let me know if you have software where you can just drag video and images off the card to your desktop and burn a DVD or bluray in 10 minutes. Otherwise I think it’s a convoluted process that takes too much time.

Update: Returned it. Just could not get to the buttons comfortably. 5X optical zoom is a bit limited.

“Works great for camcorders in this price range”
I’ve had this camcorder for a month or so now and I’ve been really happy with this camcorder. I use this camcorder to take pictures of my wife and kid occasionally. The video quality is acceptable when there’s sufficient light, at low light the video gets grainy but there’s a built in light that can be turn on (manually or automatically). The microphone was also pretty sensitive and the sound in my videos are good of good quality. You can take snapshots in the middle of recording a video, the quality is ok for facebook but it you’re looking for high quality you should get a digital camera. It has no built in memory, but recording to SDHC is convenient and downloading to PC is very easy, just insert the SD card and grab the AVI files, I haven’t had any problems with the encoding.

If your budget is $200-$300 then you’re probably comparing this JVC MS120 with the Canon FS200 or the flip ultra HD (maybe the Sony/Panasonic ones as well). I went with JVC since Canon is more expensive, flip ultra HD has very limited controls and the reviews of Sony/Panasonic ones weren’t that great. And the JVC has kept me happy so far.

“JVC Everio MS102 Dual flash CAM”
This is a great little camcorder. Its a little bigger than the palm of your hand and not much bigger than a digital camera. I tried out the ultra fine mode and economy mode and both work great. The ultra fine give you better detail but takes up lots of room. The economy mode works just as good but provides less detail. It shoots very clear picture in adequate lighting but in low lighting, you will need to turn on the LED light or make the proper adjustments. Also, you can view what you recorded right on the camcorder. It is also very easy to convert the videos you record to a workable format. For the price of $270 you can’t go wrong. I recommend it to everyone.

“Good little camcorder”
Great camcorder…just upgraded from C-VHS. This camcorder is light and very easy to use. The battery lasts for 4 hours and the removeable cards are perfect for direct copy to a computer.

“100% TOP QUALITY MULTI-USE CAMERA”
First let me say I love toys, especially great ones.

As a previous owner of SANYO’s underwater cameras I was very happy when my new WH1 arrived. The first thing I noticed when holding the WH1, is how well it fits in your hand. It’s lightweight, and the simple controls are very well laid out. After skimming through manual, and charging the battery, I loaded it up with an SD card. I then went out to see what it can do. First off was taking still photos in various lighting conditions. Then I took several different videos in my pool. The WH1 is very simple to use, and I didn’t need to refer back to the manual for anything during my first outing with the camera.

After playing with it for about an hour, I downloaded all the pictures to my computer. The still photos were very good. I was especially surprised how well the photos were underwater. The results were very close a top stand alone digital point and shoot might take, the pictures were perfectly fine for viewing on a screen or printing at 4×6 or 8×10. I shot the test videos at 640×480, 30fps, high bit rate, using all “Auto” settings. Again the results were very good. The videos were clear and the sound was good. The camera focused well under all conditions. All in all, Sanyo has a winner here. If you love the outdoors, water, snow or rain. This is the best camera on the market hands down!

I’ve been a loyal Amazon customer for many years. You can’t beat the price, shipping and service you receive. Don’t purchase from anyone else online, you never know who they actually are.

“After every sentence say. BUT IT SHOOTS HD UNDERWATER!!!!”
“Every critisism of this camera you must follow up with the statement “but it goes underwater and shoots HD” For this amount of money your not going to do any better. Most any camcorder your going to need a tripod, and this one is no exception. The features including the talking menu and easy to navigate menus are great. The picture is good.. not great, but then again.. IT GOES UNDERWATER… The image can become shaky eventhough the zoom is quite smooth. The still pictures are worthless, but still IT GOES UNDERWATER… It is a nice color, (I got yellow) and using SD cards is the way of the future. HD 720 Video is awesome. You will need to weigh the pro of being able to shoot underwater with other factors, however, your not going to do any bettr in HD video even if it doesnt go underwater for this price. So you might as well get the one THAT you guessed it GOES UNDERWATER. If your considering any camcorder in this price range, I would recommend this, for having all the right features and underwater HD video is just unreal!! A Great deal, glad I bought it, Everyone loves it and everyone can use it. It has not only an easy mode but the settings most wanna be pro videographers want as well. I SAY put it on auto and go, however I have friends who just insist on using manual settings because it makes them feel more like a pro. Gettng the shot makes me feel like a pro and within a second of turning it on your ready to go. Did I mention the battery lasts an amazing three hours?? It is truly solid and the waterproof feature makes it a solidly built piece of equipment. I recommend this for anyone who wants something that is #1 going to last and #2 is very trendsetting nd unique. Not like the other Sanyo “gun” models, this one can sit on a table. It will also shoot pictures fast. I am glad I bought it and think it is worth beyond the price. Even if your not going underwater, shooting in the rain, water rafting or even snow, you should get this for piece of mind!

If your even considering an HD camera or a SD camera or an underwater camera or even just a yellow camera. THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY!”

“Solid contstruction, water tight even past 10 ft / the 2mp still camera is horrible/ 44MB internal storage”
+ Solidly constructed camera and my first underwater camcorder, the challenges of all underwater devices is adequately fitting rubber gaskets and seals to metal and this camera did just fine even down to 25 ft when I took out on lazy beach day.

+ The menus are well laid out to quickly reach every function category and drill down only or two levels to change anything else. This is very important when considering it is designed to be used underwater where the operators senses are afflicted and it can be challenging for most people to perform tasks underwater. Audio cues even a curt female voice is helpful underwater and out for prompts.

+ Decent flash, bright LCD for a camcorder in this price range and even two camcorder record buttons, one for the thumb the other is close to the lens and easy to click. The 45MB of internal storage isn’t advertised on the box in an age of GB+ camcorders but it surprisingly stores a decent amount of video before maxing out, so far we’ve never inserted an SD card and found the built in storage adequate.

+ Battery charges quickly and briskly, haven’t worn it down yet but also haven’t tried to really pace it out either.

– But, the 2MP still camera is rather useless, even $10 prepaid cellphones have better cameras and we can’t remember images this ugly since the turn of the century. understandably Sanyo had to include some type of still photo capacity with a digital camcorder but the poor quality does more harm than good.

The USB connector is almost a Mini B plug but Sanyo did something weird and flared out the edges to ensure you’ll only use their cable on the side of the corder, more annoying and pointless since it was nearly identical in size and pins to standard USB MiniB plugs.

We had it setup and out of the box in less than five minutes because it seems Sanyo has put effort into the layout of the controls and menus, the impressive construction never gave us concern about seepage and it held up at 20+ ft in saltwater without stress or damage.

“Best Value!”
Some people are completely off their rocker. The complaints on a $200 digital camcorder reflects unreal expectations. Sony has not designed this camera to be a replacement to your existing camcorder for things like weddings or school plays. This is designed for great portability and to capture video for your computer and internet sharing. Complaints about the footage looking grainy on a 50′ plasma are crazy, this camcorder is designed for smaller screens, DUH THE WEBBIE.

My experience with this product is great. The video looks reasonably good on my 40′ Bravia played through my PS3, but since I store and view my video on my computer the video on it is what matters and it is amazing. Low light does cause some grainy video but no more than more expensive camcorders, one would have to pay 3 times the cost of the Webbie to get better low-light video that is worth the cost. I recommend this camcorder, it definitely gives the most bang for the buck. One would have to pay at least $500-$600 to get a better camera, the buttons are somewhat difficult to use but I can put up with that to save some green. Again you are not getting a $700 HD camcorder for $200, but a $400 camcorder for $200, so realize what you are getting before you buy it. The people who wrote the bad reviews seem like the people who go into restaurants and try to get extra food for less money and then don’t tip their server.

“Small package but delivers big”
A terrific package, stuffed with lot of functionality. Small camcorder that you can keep in your handbag or glove box all time. You are not stuck with the crappy cellphone videos any more. It works like a charm. If you have used a point shoot camera before, the optical quality is very similar. CMOS sensor is small and the lens f/stops are not wide enough. I stress again on optical quality. In built battery gives long life, with memory stick you transfer video from camera to PC easily. This a wonderful package. Quality of video is in between flip and full fledged HDV camcorders. It is not full true HD. For this price worth every penny. Pictures come crisp and clear. I also love the quite noise free operation of flash camcorders. Especially when you are recording a sleeping child or other really calm situations. Even if you have one of the big camcorders, I strongly suggest getting this as a second one.

Very worthy contender in this new flash camcorder space. It has both optical and digital zoom. There is no image stabilizer, so you need steady hands at full optical zoom. And it is not a simple extended digital camera. It sports full stereo audio recording. Video is stored as H.264 format, same as blu-ray. It provides the best compression known to man that can be played any where. H.264 videos can be downsampled for internet viewing without a lot of effort. Trans coding takes time, just down sampling can be done faster. Flash media is much easier to work with than tapes. Most of the new Macs doesnt have firewire port, even in older computers it takes for ever to transfer from tape. With memory stick duo, you can drag and drop the necessary movies edit them instantaneously. All the blu-ray players support AVCHD DVDs. You can easily fit 45 min of high definition video in a dual layer DVD.

For night time video capture it includes a LED light. With LED you get best of both worlds, bright light with longer battery life. If you have used other point and shoot cameras you will be home right away with auto modes like landscape, night shot etc.

Manage your expectations, it is not meant to be a full fledged HD camcoder. It is a step above cameras that shoot videos and below HDV camcorders. Understand the laws of physics. Larger lens, larger CMOS sensors will provide better exposure, saturation, bokeh and crisp low light pictures. Sony has done the best that physics will allow to be done with this size optics. If you want a small pocket size camcorder look no where else. A nice touch as with other Sony products, it comes with every thing you need. Every kind of cables, lens covers etc. etc.

Now one important warning. Memory Stick Duo is one of the most pirated card in black market. Pay up and buy from trusted vendors. Cheap cards sold in ebay and other 3rd party vendors are slow and less reliable. When you put the card in any device like PSP check for magic-gate info. If it says magic-gate: unknown, return it back.

It’s not just what you say, it’s what you say it with. The Flip Mino camcorder combines remarkable video quality in a pocket-sized package that’s designable.

Reviews from Customers

“Great small camcorder”
The Flip Mino is a great small camcorder for the price, mainly because of the form factor. It’s a lot thinner and smaller than the Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White), yet yields equal performance. The only negative is that it doesn’t take AA batteries like the Flip Ultra because it’s so thin. Instead, it has a non user replaceable built-in lithium ion battery like an iPod.

The Flip Mino does not neccessarily replace the Flip Ultra and the Flip Ultra is being sold side by side with the Flip Mino. And, the Flip Mino doesn’t come in as many colors, only a black version and a white version.

I would say If you already have a Flip Ultra, you may not want or need to buy the Flip Mino (unless you really want the smaller form factor or you have money to burn) since it yields about the same video and audio quality. If you don’t own a Flip video camera yet, the Flip Mino is probably the one to get unless you require AA batteries which admittedly is nice because they are readily available everywhere. I actually prefer AA batteries over an internal rechargeable battery that over a few years will start to lose it’s charge and not last as long between charges.

That said, the Flip Mino is pretty nice because it’s so small and thin.

Even though I have a digital point and shoot still camera that can shoot video, I find it easier to shoot video with the Flip Mino. The vertical form factor is better suited to shooting video. The built in software is nice and it’s built into the camera so you need not install anything on your computer.

The Flip Mino is a great ‘take everywhere’ video camera that fits in your pocket and can yield some creative and endearing videos.

“Great compact device you can take everywhere!”
The form factor on this product is great. Its noticeably smaller (in both the pocket and the hand) than its predecessor – the Flip Video Ultra Series, 60 min. And the Ultra was already compact to begin with! The sleek size was important to me because I just won’t bring a camcorder out with me if it doesn’t fit easily in my pocket. This device did just the trick. If you don’t care about size (i.e., because you will just put it in your purse, etc) then I would suggest saving the money and getting the Ultra, which lists for about $50 or so less.

As far as I can tell, the video quality and functionality is about the same as the Ultra and they both have the 2GB of memory, similar 1.5″ screen size, digital zoom etc. So the only reason in my mind to get this is for the size advantage. But for me, size does matter. When I think about how many moments passed by unrecorded simply because it was too cumbersome to take a camcorder along, it really makes me wish they made this Mino years ago!

For those of you unfamiliar with Flip camcorders, the Mino has suprisingly good VGA video quality. I’d put it on par with that of much larger, more expensive traditional camcorders. The Mino also records well in a variety of light settings. The lack of a true optical zoom is probably to be expected given the small size, but the 2x digital zoom is good enough for most casual settings. The design is well thought out to avoid many of the classic pitfalls of portable devices – there’s a scratch resistant covering on the lens, an on/off switch on the side that is difficult to trip accidentally and a centrally located record button that has enough resistance to avoid unintentionally starting/stopping recording (I know some have issues with the Ultra record button but I have not).

I have a PC at home and the Mino truly is a plug-and-play device. You don’t have any confusing software or cables to muddle around with. Simply plug the USB adapter into your computer and you’re ready to go! It’s great for the non-technically savvy. I also like the rechargeable built-in battery in the Mino (which is a new feature). It recharges like an iPod, either in the computer or through an outlet which is convenient. I can’t attest yet to the battery life/quality but I figure by the time it dies out on me, I’ll be well on my way to buying a next generation Flip Micro!

I noticed the price dropped on the black Flip Mino. For those of you who don’t know (Amazon doesn’t advertise this) Amazon not only has a 30 day return policy, but a 30 day price adjustment policy as well. So if you bought your Flip in the past 30 days, you can call them up and they will immediately refund the difference to you with no hassles. This policy holds for all products directly sold by Amazon.

“Entrepreneurial videos”
I love my new Flip Mino camcorder. I was mega-skeptical about how good

something this tiny could be, but I needed something quick, easy and

practical for sales-oriented website videos. I was amazed at how easy it

is to use the Flip Mino, and at the quality of the end product video.

Is it the “perfect” camcorder for every ocassion? No, but for those

impromptu, “down & dirty”, on the spot videos it beats the heck out of

using a big camcorder…or a cellphone. I considered buying a Sony

“Webbie”, but dollar for dollar you can’t beat a Flip.

Jeff Ascough is UK based photographer that is known for not using flash for any of his shoots. Looks like he’s been using 1-series bodies for quite awhile and really familiar with them. Looks like Jeff has the camera 24hrs before his shoots and didn’t have alot of time setting up the camera, but its not much different from his 1DsMKIII. Shots from the Canon 1DMKIV they are stunning in low light!

Autofocus performance is stunning. There is no other word for it. Canon have spent a lot of time and energy on this aspect of the camera and it shows. I was shooting in horrific lighting for AF systems, and it just performed faultlessly. I used the center point and the back button for focusing as this is what I have become use to over the past 12 months with the 5DMKII, and like I said it was faultless. I didn’t try AI servo mode (as I always use One shot) or any of the other AF options (some of which have been borrowed from the 7D). Source:[Jeff Ascough/Canonrumors]
