Dat is leuk! Onlangs produceerde UC Media Producties een vlotte promotiefilm voor The Optical Foundation. Deze moest meedoen in de Mambapoint Video Wedstrijd. The Optical Foundation is een stichting die zich inzet voor oogheelkunde in Ghana. Met deze wedstrijd kon de stichting €2000,- winnen voor het uitvoeren van hun werkzaamheden. En dat deden ze! Zie hier het filmpje van de uitreiking, met daar achter aan ook de video die UC Media voor The Optical Foundation maakte.

There are now a number of Steadicam’s and Steadicam clones out there following the release of Garrett Browns original patent on his design for the steadicam Mk1. This grip gear which was orginally used on ‘The Shinning’, is now used on countless productions, from feature films and TV to Corporate Promo .

The important thing to remember about steadicam is that it is just another piece of grip equipment and not always the best replacement for the good old track and dolly.

Actors are often asked to cheat; but it’s okay, really.

Shooting lead roles in three student films over the last year gave me plenty of time to think about acting for the camera and how it differs from theater and other forms of the craft.
In film and television acting, there’s no live audience so there’s little if any feedback of any kind. My audience is just a camera, the camera operator, the director and any crew standing around at the time. This means I use my imagination and play to the camera, ignoring the crew. Years on movie sets have taught me to be aware of where the camera is and what the camera is supposed to be capturing at the time. Obviously, when I am in a scene with another actor, I need to look at him and react to what he says. But – guess what – often, because of what the camera is trying to capture, I need to “cheat.”

As Richard Brestoff explains in his excellent book, The Camera Smart Actor: “Because distances and locations look different to the camera than they do in real life, an actor might be asked to look at a different place than where the other actor actually is. On camera, it looks fine but to the actor it is a cheat. For example, an actor might be asked to cheat a look or a body position more toward the camera than the actor would think necessary or even comfortable. But, to the camera, such a cheat would look perfectly natural.”

A good example is the scene between my character Don Romano and my henchman in the student film comedy, A Taste For Danger.
I was seated behind my desk and he was standing in front of the desk on my left. While we shot his medium shots and chokers, it didn’t matter where I looked because I was either out of frame or only a small bit of my head appeared. However, when we shot MY medium shot, the director asked me to deliver my lines to a spot on the doorway just to my right and not at the actor.

But when you say “astonishingly, this outburst did not get the operator fired” I get a little scared.

Everybody must also be allowed to have an own opinion, a freedom of speech and by all means a bad day.

Maybe I didn’t properly convey how big of an asshole this guy was. It’s not his misinformed opinion that bothered me so much as the fact that he screamed at this poor PA, at the top of his lungs, because he didn’t get a preliminary call sheet five minute sooner, when we were rolling. (We were rolling five minutes earlier, not that he screamed while rolling.)

Unless you’re a doctor or a soldier or a police officer, there is rarely a good reason to yell at a work. Maybe if a crane is about to fall on someone’s head. But other than that, it’s uncalled for.

I know someone’s going to say, “But that’s Hollywood, Anonymous! People are going to yell over petty things! Get used to it.”

Yes, that’s true.  But on the other hand, shut up.  Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s right.

And it doesn’t mean there’s no alternative, either. I’ve heard that Bill Lawrence enforces a “No Jerks” rule on Scrubs. The theory goes, no matter how good you are at your job, there’s someone else who’s just as good and isn’t a dick.

Some day, I’d like to have that rule on my own set. If I was a producer instead of a PA on this show, and I heard about something like this happening, I would make the camera operator apologize to the PA, in front of the entire crew. He did, after all, embarrass the PA in front of the entire crew. And then I would make it clear to the op that, if he yells at anyone ever again, someone better be in mortal danger, or his ass is fired.

Call me naive if you must, but I’m young. I can still afford to be naive.

I’ve complained about the camera department before, but just last week, an operator managed to reach below my already low expectations of civil behavior.

My set counterpart was passing out prelim call sheets to department heads. Since we were rolling at the time, the PA went around to the “soft crew” first– hair, make-up, costume. At cut, he worked his way into the set, hitting the gaffer and key grip before eventually reaching the camera operator.

Suddenly, the camera op started yelling. (I know this, because I could hear him from the production office.) “I’m the most important person on the set! I’m more important than the DP! I’m more important than the director!”

I asked the PA later what the deal was. He said the operator was angry that he didn’t get the prelim before anyone else. Astonishingly, this outburst did not get the operator fired.

Later in the week, though, a camera assistant quit, and he took his 2nd with him, because of this operator. Guys in the camera department are often jerks and bullies, and ACs are used to putting up with shit. It would take a lot to get an AC to quit, especially now.

Because I’m not on set, I don’t know the specifics of what happened, but this operator must be a colossal dick.

Why are guys like that allowed to have a job, when I know so many nice, competent people out of work?

Our group went to Wedgwood museum for the day to film the footage needed for the webvert. We all swapped jobs throughout the day: director, camera operator, sound operator and editor. The camera operator sets up the shot, the director checks the shot, the sound operator would check the subject can be heard if necessary and the editor would check that all the shots from the storyboard  have been filmed. It was quite easy because it was simple to do. Our group worked quite well together, however, there were some disagreements about what to film, but these were overcome by filming both ideas. Our target for next lesson is to edit the webvert.

Voila! Een korte film geproduceerd door UC zelf – tweeënhalve minuten kijkplezier. In Visions of Photography dwalen we over de klinkerbestrating door de oude binnenstad van Utrecht. Tijdens het rondlopen geeft Derk Steemers zijn visie en gedachtegang over fotografie in combinatie met de ervaring van het maken van foto’s in Utrecht.

Januari jongstleden vertrok UC Media richting het in winterkleding gehulde Stockholm. We troffen een waterrijke stad aan, met overal kleurrijke huizen en kanaaltjes. Genoeg te fotograferen, dat was dan ook het thema: De zoektocht naar fotogenieke plekjes in het ‘Venetië van het Noorden’. De plekken vonden we ook! Kijk op de youtube pagina van Lonely Planet

I am happy to report that we are crewed up for the New York Reality TV School pilot shoot event this weekend.  Thank you to those of you that contacted me with interest in this free training opportunity.  As these shoots get thrown in my lap I will happily tell you about them.  I’ve gotten a lot of my former participants PAID work lately, something you’ll hear more about in consecutive newsletters.

I hosted a teleseminar recently with Jason Liquori of C Mount Industries.  We talked about how to get “your foot in the door” as a working entertainment pro.  During this Freelance Strategies program, we really got into some valuable meat and potatoes material about coming up through ANY INDUSTRY! We both agreed that the single best way to move up quickly in any production (especially if you have little experience) is to over deliver.  Sometimes this means working for free.  Sometimes this means making coffee or cleaning up vomit and doing it will a smile.  Doing it with eagerness without a self important attitude.

I was working on a shoot with NFL superstar, Terrell Owens recently (The TO Show on VH1) and had the chance to work beside a very unhappy PA (Production Assistant) one day.  Their mission on our production appeared to be spending as  much time actually hindering the show instead of helping it.  Here’s how:

• texting constantly
• questioning Producers job assignments behind their backs
• complaining about conditions
• generally being rather negative about the whole thing

Most of the Producers and crew people that I now know and consider friends all worked their way up through the ranks.  They did the crappy job with a smile.  They all will still help move equipment and clean up even thought they earn sometimes more than 7 times the daily pay rate of the PA.  Why do they do it?  They enjoy the team spirit? They want to set a good example? They like creating a successful product with no concern for looking good or important?  YES.  ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

Ironically, those are all qualities in a person that we all enjoy being around.  This is why personality is so much a part of the production process.  Crews don’t sit down like factory workers and assemble their little componant and pass it off to the next person in the assembly line.  They work together.

The bottom line is this.  If  you are willing to behave like you own the company, you could one day own the company.  Taking responsibility (with or without pay) is fantastically inspiring to be around.  I will be Directing and Producing this weekend’s shoot without pay.  I am hopeful that it will turn in to future opportunities for Reality Crew members.  I believe that if I deliver a kick-ass product I will eventually be rewarded in ways that I can’t predict right now.   I guess, I too, am setting an example on this job.  Being generous with my time has worked out well for me.  If you are trying on a new career, this attitude may work for you as well.

Cam Ops will be using a popular HD DV camera typically used on reality productions

Sound Mixers will be using a 5 channel mixer, 4 cast mics, boom pole mic, connected wirelessly to camera.

Your crew will spend several hours following cast members in an un-scripted reality style shoot.   You will work with a Director who will help you frame shots and create a broadcast quality audio mix.

We will spend at least one hour before shooting begins getting you comfortable with your equipment.

Spotzer opereert wereldwijd als media agency voor bedrijven in alle vormen en maten. Eén van de onderdelen is het leveren van korte promotiefilms. Daar kort UC Media om de hoek kijken! Wij produceren (regisseren, filmen en monteren) in opdracht van Spotzer promo’s op regelmatige basis. Zo werden er in de afgelopen twee weken vier korte promotiefilms geproduceert, meer volgen!

Congratulations to the video crew of Resource Group who for the last three weeks have had a live music video they shot either shown on TV or appearing on a major music website. In the last three weeks Resource GRoup has had video content on RollingStone.com, CMT.com and this week Rhapsody.com

This week the videos are from the Chicago Double Doors event sponsored by Coors Light.

The three bands videoed were: Peter Bjorn and John, Blind Pilot and The Henry Clay People.

Papillon & Partners richt zich op het ontwikkelen van leiderschap op allerlei niveaus. Dit word vooral toegepast in het bedrijfsleven. Elizabeth van Geerestein, hoofd van de organisatie, gaf onlangs een speech in het UMG te Groningen over leiderschap in de zorgwereld. UC registreerde dit!

Jaarlijks is er voor vrouwen de “International Womens Day”, een dag speciaal in het teken van de vrouw. Dat was afgelopen zondag! Daar heeft het Haagse Women’s Business Initiave wat mee gedaan.

Verslaggeving
De WBI organiseerde een avond, speciaal voor Business vrouwen in het Carlton Ambassador Hotel in Den Haag. Een aantal toespraken en uitreikingen van awards, onder het genot van goed eten. UC Media legde de avond vast en zorgde voor een sfeervolle impressie!
