This is Part 1 of a 2 part article on using your camera’s Manual Settings.

Most of this is really directed at SLR or advanced Compact/Bridge Camera users. It’s not nearly as difficult as you might think. In fact in some ways it is simpler and safer as there are some nasty traps waiting for the unwary when you shoot in fully Auto. There are two main areas where we can go wrong in Manual.

1) Focus
2) Exposure

1) FOCUS
Much of the time your camera will automatically focus very well and so should be left on Auto Focus. However it is worth remembering that in low light or confused patterns and backgrounds the digital sensor may sometimes have trouble and when it does it doesn’t simply focus on infinity which would be helpful it just ups and looses interest and seems to take deliberate delight in finding nothing to focus on at all! Most cameras will usually tell you they are in trouble by not giving you the thumbs up in the viewfinder or screen and turning the nice little square in the centre green. It will stay red and there will be no reassuring “bing!” noise. Furthermore people around you will start getting impatient especially if it is a person or group that you are trying to shoot. We don’t want them wandering off. You can have a few tries but be careful that when and if it does focus that it has focussed on what you want it to and not just grabbed hold of something easy to fool you into getting on with it and taking the picture. You didn’t think an inanimate object could have a mind of its own. Wrong! Cameras have.

It is useful therefore to be ready and able to focus manually. Usually switching the lens itself to manual can facilitate this. (Slider switch on the side.) Or you can switch to M-A which is Auto with Manual override, a useful mode to leave it in if you have that. Sometimes you have to go into the menu to select manual focus. If so, that is a lengthier step, but not if you have practice getting there which I recommend. When in manual focus on most SLRs and similar a focusing ring on the lens will become active and the handbook/instructions/software with the camera will advise you as to how manual focusing is done and what to look for in the viewfinder. On compacts the focusing is sometimes done in other ways – inevitable more fiddly. All cameras are different. This manual focusing business in invariably easier the bigger and more expensive the camera you have. This is so often not the case but with digital cameras I am afraid the more money you pay the easier they get to use – often more bulky – but inevitably easier. (More useful buttons on the outside generally.) Practice getting the focus right, it is the most important thing to have correct. Adjustments later are all but impossible. If the image is under or over exposed you can usually fix it in the computer even without Photoshop and if not you can always say that it’s the way you intended it! Out of focus images are more difficult to explain away.
