Have you ever wondered after the purchase, if it could really be the best offer for a product or service you received? I think we all do at some point, but the important question, you are so, if you purchase a Canon PowerShot A650IS digital camera. Probably will not, unless you know what it is, always and above all, what you do not get with this camera.

Why Canon did not find an inexpensive camera for LCDreadable in the great outdoors is a mystery. The technology is there, as I have seen so many emails seafood. I suppose that Canon is supposed to be, most of the photos taken at the A650IS. The least they could do to start would be to add a line of light, so that users could crank the screen when you are out.

There are of course possible to use the viewfinder to frame your shots. You should be aware, however, that these shots of power and many,The viewfinder is not entirely correct. You will find that your photos are about 20-25% larger than what is seen through the viewfinder A650IS. Something to be aware when you crack the trigger.

Another thing that does not excite more with the PowerShot A650 is the wide range of ISO. While it may take up to ISO 3200, in fact, all the images at ISO 400 or higher will be too strong. According to the image problem, and what are yourwith the images you will be able to push your luck a bit 'here.

Although this is not a problem is not completely devastating with the Canon Powershot A650IS, contribute to the fact that a strong argument for a no. Before passing a final decision, here are some points to consider as well:

– LCD is not practical when taking rapid series of images

– Zoom lens (6X) extrapolates a certain weakness in the corners

– A visible barrel distortion in wide mode

– Chromatic onsome images after enlargement

– The battery compartment is so delicate (separately) from the compartment of memory

– If the connectors are available to shoulder the weight of this camera

This is Paul Nicklen, an amazing National Geographic photographer who shares his experience of coming face-to-face with a deadly Leopard Seal, which is known to be one of Antartica’s deadliest predators. The sea lion mistook Nicklen and his camera as a large predator and for four days tried to feed him penguins and nurture him. Nicklen’s story is amazing, and really unbelievable. Hope you find it as inspiring as I did.

I’m currently reading Camera Lucida*,  a kind of meditation on the meaning of photography by the French philosopher Roland Barthes. It’s rather a mixed experience: one minute i’m thrilled, the next exasperated. Let’s leave that aside however; what i’d really like to talk about is a passage on page 10 where he writes:

… once i feel myself to be observed by the lens, everything changes: i constitute myself in the act of “posing”, i instantaneously make another body for myself, i transform myself in advance into an image. This transformation is an active one: i feel that the Photograph creates my body or mortifies it, according to its caprice…

Do you recognise what he’s talking about? Maybe it made you smile? Well, for me, reading those lines was like being struck by lightning.

Instantly, i remembered how in the years before i transitioned, i would smile as brightly and as widely as possible whenever i was photographed. This was truer than ever during the years of my marriage. I beam like a sun in practically every picture taken of me in that period; i gleam ecstatically. Yet that was the beginning of the long, slow unravelling that brought me to the point where i finally understood that i had to transition. It was a time when turmoil, pain and confusion reigned inside my mind.

So why the smile? The reason is simple: i believed that if all the pictures of my life showed me to be happy, then i would have been happy – not simply seemed to be happy, but actually been happy. It was one of those beliefs that possessed me so deeply that i wasn’t aware of its existence.

Now it shocks me: not just the power i ascribed to photography, but the thrall that i was in to images in general. It’s as though i thought that they were realer than reality itself. My life at that time was a constant parade of impersonations of the female sex: i was ‘earth mother’, ‘sophisticated lady’, ‘out and out tart’ – sometimes all in the space of an afternoon! Even after my marriage broke down i didn’t abandon the attempt. It was only after i’d exhausted every version of ‘female’ i could think of that i gave in and bowed to the inevitable.

My naive belief in appearances reflected my own inability to understand why i couldn’t be a woman. I didn’t – couldn’t – recognise that gender identity has to have its roots inside a person. I thought it could be planted on the outside and cultivated till it flowered within. It also showed how deeply ashamed i was of my own unhappiness, the misery i didn’t understand and couldn’t name. What better way to hide a big, big sorrow than with a big, big smile?

Now i smile when i’m happy – although not always and never like i did back then. I don’t do impersonations anymore.

Today, I bring you some photos from our latest get together. We’ve practically finished building the payload; the only thing left to do is create the transmit antenna, gluegun on the UV filter and test it! (Oh, and coat the whole thing in duct-tape). Note: our camera model has changed. Instead of using the Powershot A80 (which broke, the CCD stopped working) we’re now using a Powershot A560, with the Stereo Data Maker variant of CHDK installed on it to make it automatically take photos!

The A560 offers 3.1 extra megapixels, which in today’s world can only be good. However, it takes an SD card instead of the CF we already have, so the CF is going on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=140361921034&Category=18871&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D1 before we acquire an SD card. Cutting polystyrene without a hot wire cutter proved a slight challenge, but it wasn’t anything a Leatherman and a grindstone couldn’t fix. A titanic step forward has been made on the project as everything materialises into tangible reality as opposed to dreamworld. Once the latex balloon is ordered we can start thinking seriously about launch!

I continuously neglect this page, but really have no excuses. From those that I knew actively read my site at all, we all talk through Twitter or other means mostly now. And as I mentioned a few months ago, I have been messing with Tumblr a bit as well. But part of me wants to post here more often, just to speak whats on my mind or share some knowledge. But enough with the usual ‘oh my goodness i haven’t bloged in so long’ notes…what have I been doing?

• A few weeks ago, Deborah and I hit a huge milestone: We have been a couple for 10 YEARS now.
• Work is amazing, and I recently hit my one year mark of being there.  Its amazing how fast it went by, and I’m still as excited as the first day there.
• The project I started and launched this summer, GamingTweets.net, is going offline. While the ‘learning’ part of the project was a success, the actual usage of the site was a failure. It got little to no traffic, and without a large amount of work (mainly even more publicity), it was never going to sustain itself. Not surprisingly, I think that (in exception of some clients), most twitter-focused sites have less than year lifetimes as well. When going through a bunch of ‘read these some day’ posts in Google Reader, ranging over 2 years, about 80% of those projects no longer existed.
• I have been keeping sharp with ASP.net on a few various other projects, but glad to be able to spend some personal time on other personal projects.
• I bought a Canon Rebel T1I kit, and got rid of my XTi. Costco was having an amazing deal on the camera and kit lens, a 55-250 IS lens, a case, and a bunch of other goodies. I have yet to really work with this camera yet, but will post when I do.
• Picked up Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on launch day (after work), and just finished it last night. What an amazing game.
• About to make some major changes in our home office, including:
  • Picking up a new desk
  • Finally becoming completely Mac, since we barely use our PC anymore.
  • Extending our iMac to use our 22″ Samsung display as well.
• Ive been working on a Media Center / Home Server idea for a while now. Leaning towards possibly picking up a Mac Mini running Plex, and then some external disks.
• Been mostly home-bodies otherwise, since Deb’s has been recovering from her surgery about two months ago. She’s back to walking normally, and we hope by Christmas she should be able to even go hiking/biking, etc.
• I also started my first Cocoa/Obj-C app, that is letting me learn UI components, but also working with XML parsing and possibly even iPhone development. More on this later….

I am finally (!) back with my camera. I haven’t felt enough inspired for taking photos lately, but it’s so nice to be back now. These pictures aren’t perfect, but at least I use the camera to create something new and that feels so good. I’ll come back with better pictures when my cat won’t try to catch the camera. Maybe it will be easier then

Just when you thought you could forget about the elusive bugger, rumors about an iPod Touch with a built-in camera start up again. The latest report points to a Spring 2010 refresh that will finally include a video camera.

The latest rumor reads like it’s August all over again, but it does have one particularly disappointing aspect. According to the source, the iPod touch camera will match the not-so-hot quality of the nano’s.

Here’s to hoping the engineers can somehow stuff the iPhone’s camera into an iPod Touch. Sure, there’s not much space to work with in the Touch, but we can believe. [The Examiner via 9 to 5 Mac]

It is one of life’s coincidences that, in the week that my good friend Bob Machin should mount a “stupid dull crap meaningless”  tirade against a picture by Sara Ramos featured in the Guardian’s best shot series, I was sorting through some test shots I took using a Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM that fitted his description well.  I bought this lens a couple of weeks ago from Vintage & Classic Cameras as a cheaper alternative to the Leica 50mm Summilux  which is way out of my price range.  To test it one Sunday, I decided to suggest a family walk; I believe another pet hate of Bob’s, but he has so many it is sometimes difficult to keep track.  Naturally the suggestion was met with indifference by the rest of the family, no doubt feeling they would rather enjoy the silence in my absence as the Sunday afternoon guitar practice would cease during my sojourn.  I set out on the same imaginary dog walk that I have done for many a month now, armed with my Leica M3 and the Canon 50mm.  I go down the hill to the seafront and perambulate on one of the finest aspects of Penarth, its wonderful pier.  I’ve taken hundreds of pictures of this pier and some I like and some I hate, but it often affords a good place to just fire off some test shots and complete a roll of film.  There was a Penarth Pier photo competition last year which, due to indolence, I failed to enter.  I have to say that when I saw the dramatic nature of the winner – lighting striking the pier in darkness – it was probably as well I didn’t make the effort.   Hats off to the guy, but the idea of setting off in a storm, in the dark, on the off chance of capturing something like that,  as those closest to me will attest, is simply not in my laidback, naturally lazy nature.   A slow Sunday afternoon stroll taking pictures of things that don’t move, or as Bob so succinctly put it “stupid dull  crap meaningless pictures”, now that’s right up my street.

I shot two rolls on Fuji Reala 100 of which I have a ton because I found it very cheap.  It has a rather naturalistic look, which I’ve yet to decide upon, but its slowness engenders clarity.  The decline of film means Tesco no longer process, so Davis Colour did me 72 5×7’s of which 60 constituted what could loosely be called landscapes.  Now these are the ones that for me are the true crap, because you look through them and wonder what on earth it was that you saw through the view finder that made you press the shutter.  I guess it’s just not my thing because the ones that please me are always the more abstract odd ones that nearly don’t work but at least are not a dull travesty of  life’s reality.  So I’ve selected my favourites and they are to be found below.

What can I say about the lens?  It’s well made and certainly sharp.  It has good colour rendition at least with the Reala.  It balances well on the M3 and gives me that extra stop for those low light moments.  I’m not a big tester of stuff in the technical way that some people are; if it feels comfortable, and I like the photos, then I don’t need much more info than that.  I have shot some black and white photos that I processed last night so I’ll post them up when the mood strikes.

I should also mention Paul Williams who has set up a little competition on his blog, inspired by Bob’s words, and which can be found here.  I’ve already entered one of these from below, with a small explanation of my thoughts.  I started writing it with my tongue in my cheek, only to discover that I found some merit in my own pretentiousness.  The years I’ve spent being taught by the graduates of Newport School of Art, Media and Design are paying off, either that or I’ve been indoctrinated.  It is certainly true that while I don’t think the actual pictures I take have changed so much, the way I think about them has changed enormously.  Teaching, the internet and practice have meant I can really nail those stupid dull meaningless pictures these days and, who knows, maybe even I have an exhibition in me.

So. The forum didn’t went great. It was…kinda messy. im not quite sure i wanna talk about it. I didn’t really had time to be upset about it anyway.

On wedsnesday evening i got home quite late, exhausted, frustrated, sad and scared about the coming day.  But a package was waiting for me in the mail. A wonderful package from wonderful Maria. It made me feel so much better. It was full of adorable little presents. And i can’t wait to share them with you. Unfortunatly my camera decided to take a break (that’s the last pic i could take). But anyway, i LOVE every single one of them and i already put them in good use yesterday night. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Plus, friday, my very good friends Flo and Sash arrived. älskling got home. And it was all of us walking around in Stockholm. Shopping of course. Under the sun (no kidding). It was perfect. So i have a billion of stuff to show. I got a new dress for exemple.

Sash is american, and she makes the most wonderful and delicious pancakes. And we eat them. This morning we’ve been listening to Take That’s song “Back for good” non stop. The video clip is hilarious. The outfits / dance moves are amazing.

About cameras, Sash just got a new camera (Canon SD 1200) and i think i fell in love with it. I m thinking of getting it for Xmas….i wish i knew a little more about cameras..do you guys have any advices?? 

Et puis, vendredi, Flo et Sash ont débarqué. Et älskling est renté. On a passé le weekend à se balader dans les rues de Stockholm, à faire du shopping bien sur, sous le soleil (oui oui).

Sash est américaine. Elle fait les plus merveilleux pancakes au monde. Et nous, on les mange.  On écoute en boucle depuis ce matin “Back for good” de Take That. Le clip est priceless.

A propos d’appareil photo, je suis en train de tomber amoureuse de l’appareil de Sash, Canon SD 1200. Je suis en train d’envisager un investissement. J’amerais bien m’y connaître un peu plus…. des conseils?

Máy ảnh đẳng cấp

Ngày 9-9-2009, Leica trình làng máy M9 với rất nhiều điểm đặc biệt. Trước nhất, đây là chiếc máy ảnh full-frame 24×36mm (cảm biến máy ảnh chụp ra bằng khổ phim 35mm truyền thống) nhỏ gọn nhất thế giới, chỉ cần nhìn bên ngoài cũng thừa sức khẳng định sự “mi nhon” của M9 so với các máy ảnh full-frame khác. M9 còn là máy ảnh rangefinder đầu tiên mang cảm biến full-frame.

Rangefinder là loại máy ảnh thay vì nhìn qua ống kính, người chụp nhìn trực tiếp cảnh vật, còn khung hình sẽ được biểu thị bằng các vệt đường sáng ở bên trong khung nhìn (tương tự các máy phim tự động trước đây). M9 mới chỉ là chiếc máy ảnh kỹ thuật số thứ 2 trong dòng M của Leica (dòng M vốn nổi tiếng là các máy ảnh cơ).

Các trang công nghệ chuyên về máy ảnh kỹ thuật số đều nhận định M9 là phiên bản M kỹ thuật số đầu tiên khai thác được tất cả lợi thế của ống kính dòng M nhờ khả năng tương thích cao, chất lượng xử lý hình ảnh và độ phân giải (18 chấm) rất tốt. Nghe tới M9, nhiều người đều trầm trồ về khả năng kỹ thuật của nó nhưng còn há hốc mồm khi biết giá chiếc M9 tại thị trường VN khoảng 9.200 USD (khoảng 164 triệu đồng) sau khi tính thuế.

Ông Nguyễn Gia Phong, phụ trách bán hàng và tiếp thị một công ty phân phối máy ảnh Leica tại VN, đánh giá: “Người VN chơi máy ảnh giờ cũng rất sành điệu và rất chịu đầu tư. Xu hướng chơi máy ảnh độc ngày càng phổ biến nên Leica M9 xuất hiện tại thị trường VN là chuyện dễ hiểu. Hiện tại đã có 15 đơn đặt hàng cho chiếc M9”.

“Leica rất kén người dùng. Khi chơi Leica thì tiền không phải là vấn đề, tuy nhiên nếu mua không đúng sở trường của mình sẽ rất phí tiền. Người dùng phải xác định mua để chụp gì và xem mình đã đủ tính kiên nhẫn, điềm đạm để sử dụng chưa” – đó là những chia sẻ của Hoàng Minh Trí, phóng viên một tờ báo tại Hà Nội và cũng là người hâm mộ Leica với bộ đồ nghề khá “khủng” hiện nay.

Mới chỉ đến với niềm đam mê Leica ba năm nay nhưng Trí đã tỏ ra rất chuyên nghiệp. Kết quả niềm đam mê Leica đến giờ của Trí là chiếc M8 được mua từ hai năm trước với giá 5.000 euro (lúc đó hơn 100 triệu đồng). Còn chiếc M7 được mua lại năm ngoái ở Sài Gòn với giá rẻ 2.400 USD trong khi giá thực của nó đến 4.000 USD. Ba chiếc ống kính 21mm, 28mm và 50mm. Tổng giá trị của dàn Leica khoảng 15.000 USD (khoảng 267 triệu đồng). Hiện Trí đang dùng thử chiếc M9 để trải nghiệm các tính năng mới.

Trí bày tỏ: “Khi dùng Leica rồi thì nó như một thứ tôn giáo, ta phải nghiêm chỉnh hơn trong tiếp cận. Ống kính Leica rất hạn chế, luôn bắt người chụp phải tiếp cận. Canon, Nikon có dải ống kính rất rộng tới vài trăm milimet và dễ làm người ta lười biếng. Những người tính sôi nổi rất khó dùng Leica. Tôi gặp rất nhiều người thế rồi, họ chỉ biết đến máy ảnh 35mm thì Leica là huyền thoại thế là mua, nhưng được mấy bữa lại bán vì không dùng được”.

Sự kén người chơi của Leica còn khó đến độ ngay cả việc lập hội cũng chỉ để cà phê, tám chuyện và giúp nhau mua thiết bị, còn người chụp Leica thích đi một mình. Trí kể: “Hội Leica bắt đầu hình thành với khoảng 10 người ở Hà Nội. Điểm chung là đều mê Leica nhưng tính cách rất độc lập với nhau, chúng tôi chỉ chia sẻ thành quả là ảnh”. Theo Trí, hiện nay cả nước chỉ có khoảng 50 người chơi Leica.

1. Máy dùng thấu kính tự nhiên phải phơi nắng 3-5 năm rồi mài bằng tay, trong khi các thấu kính của máy khác được làm khô bằng nhiệt độ nhân tạo.

2. Vật liệu làm máy hoàn toàn bằng đồng và thép, được chế tác bởi những thiết bị chuyên biệt của nền cơ khí Đức đầy kinh nghiệm.

3. Máy được chế tác bằng tay nên một tháng hãng chỉ xuất xưởng khoảng 1.500 máy.

4. Do các yếu tố trên nên tuổi thọ của máy rất cao, có khi hơn tuổi thọ con người.

A great site for detailed information on digital cameras is DP Review.  This is a site I have used for years referencing camera specifications, controls, performance, and comparisons.  The site covers everything from entry-level point and shoot models all the way up to the high-end professional bodies.  Not only is there a wealth of information on cameras but the site offers camera industry headlines, as well as extensive forums that contain vast information on everything photography.  Make sure to bookmark the site for future reference, the information will be invaluable when it is time to make a purchase or reference specs.

First time visiting Jabal Al-Qala’a after living more than 18 years in amman… Felt like a tourist, in fact I had to actually act like one to get in at 4:15 because they close doors at 4:00 now… They knew we were joking and let us in for 2 hours a while…
The visit was worth it, if only for the pictures you get to take…
