In late 2006 Charlie and I went for a road trip to the UK to visit family and friends. Our route took us from Germany, through Belgium with a stopover near Bruges, and then a ferry from Calais to Dover.

We headed straight up north to see family in Yorkshire, and after a couple of days went further north to Scotland. Our first night in Scotland was spent next to Loch Lomond.

The next night was spent on Skye. Apparently there were no other people on the island the days we were there. At least we didn’t see anybody!

After trekking around Scotland for a while, we went back down south again to vist friends in Manchester, Lichfield, Wales, and then on to Portsmouth where Charlie found an English friend.

This road trip finished off with seeing some more friends in Bishops Stortford, and then back home to Germany.

It all began with a simple plan: to buy all the materials – including the base vehicle, but excluding own time needed to do the work and build a camper van of sorts with a total budget of £2000. For that, the ‘rules’ were that it needed to be able to provide basic living and sleeping facilities for 2 people (and a pretty big dog) for at least a long weekend, and be able to cart mountain bikes, boats and kayaks, or climbing and ski gear, and ideally for most of the fittings to be removable in case you want to shift bigger kit.

Having experienced big, expensive MPVs and 4×4s in the past but found that you always have a concern in the back of your mind about damaging it or creating a big dent in your wallet on running costs and manufacturer accessories to transport gear about. There’s a limit to what you can carry in a small saloon car without having to take everything to bits, and kit strapped to racks can have a habit of walking just before you want to use it. Moreover, a lot of the activities in the great outdoors result in you ending up caked in mud or soaking at the end of the day, and the queue or changing facilities before heading back home can be just too much of a stress.

Close family friends had a van as their second vehicle which they used to head off windsurfing in. They always planned to add some home comforts, but never got around to it. After noticing a few folk at the bike tracks with van conversions looking ideal, the sad truth emerged upon googling that even a conversion of an ex-lease van might still cost well over £10k.

Just a small challenge… Looking at a few parts catalogues you can work out that the basic domestic bits for a camper don’t cost that much. As a main vehicle, you want to be sure you wouldn’t feel embarassed turning up anywhere in a van, so it needs a ‘cool’ angle. Tired-looking vans are about for not too much cash that still have life in them if you look beyond the surface, and at the end of the day if it all goes wrong the experiment won’t lose you too much cash and at worst you’d be able to sell a still shoddy ex-builders van on elsewhere. If the initial experiment is successful and then at the end of a year the vehicle would cost too much to get it through the MOT then you could just buy a similar van and transfer the bits across (and thus the transition from A-Team van to Harvebago).

The initial idea for both vans, like so many  ‘creations’, didn’t come from one place or one thing or place. You see so many things over the years that you think are good ideas, and from that you google for hours based on what you can remember and work up new ideas.

Camp Charlie is a very friendly chocolate brown coloured VW Camper. Despite his age, he is still pretty active and during the summer months he can be seen trekking around Europe on some road trip or other. In 2009 he was to be seen in France, Belgium, Great Britain, as well as his native Germany. He was just glad to be out and about showing off that new paint he got in late 2008.

During the winter, he might just get around to telling you about some of the past trips.

In the meantime, here are some of his vital stats:

1982 VW Westfalia Joker, with a 1.6l diesel engine. All the usual beds, cookers, fridges, cupboards that a Westy normally has. Everything is pretty much original, even the radio.

The wind hauls all night and we wake up to a cold room. Katka’s bed has an electric blanket working so at least one side of the bed is warm. She gets dressed under the blanket like in the good old days at their timber cabin in Necpaly. We pack up, leave our bags at the reception storage and head to pick up our wheels at Wicked Campervans. Along the way Katka invites me for breakfast at the lovely cafe near Avon river where we had some hot drinks yesterday.

We slowly make it to Wicked Campers on Allen St. and after 20min wait (because 2 Frenchies cut in front of us!) we have an awesome automatic van with sunroofs in the front and back. We drive to PAKinSAVE and get some groceries and fuel. We save NZD 0.10 per liter but end up having to use Katka’s credit card because mine doesn’t have PIN on it.(thank you ABN AMRO morons). Quick stop at YMCA to collect our bags then we swing by Wicked again so they can scan Katka’s driver license and we finish the shopping at Woolworths. Then we go back to YMCA to park the car for “free” and walk to have lunch at Coyote restaurant. Once the stomachs are full we walk around and shop a bit at surfshops and camping shops and I manage to get a hair cut (very short). Back at the van we take advantage of YMCA’s way of working and sneak a free shower.

We hop in our “new home” called “Road Rage” and leave Christchurch, with its beautiful old houses and clean streets, behind. Immediatelly as we head out it feels like a mix of Slovakia, Nordic countries and the Netherlands. It’s as if God poured green all over this place and placed hills covered in grass here and there, nice pastures elsewhere and off course cows and sheep in hundreds. The roads are narrow and winding. We head for Akaroa, a place of unspoken beauty created by volcanic activity. The road gets steeper and steeper. At one of the curves we pull over and get shots of us on top of the van. It requires a bit of athletic skills which at the moment I lack.

As we move on we climb higher and higher and the scenery just gets better. Less than 80km from Christchurch we turn off to the tourist drive above Akaroa and … the words just leave us. We are looking down steep hills covered in green grass, sheep and trees here and there and a bay with absolutely green water filling the former crater of a volcano. As we follow the winding road, the green pastures run down on both sides and touch the ocean. We take a road down to the lovely town of Akaroa. French flags are still hoisted up like nothing has changed for hindereds of years and the street names are in French. We only pass this lovely town but it is … cute! Past Akaroa we come upon Robinsons Bay (I guess Randy & Ginger forgot to share something with us ) and witness stunning pink sunset. The air smells like woods in the High Tatras in Slovakia combined with the ocean. We follow a VERY steep road which Katka, the ultimate navigator, picked to our wild camping site. At times it feels like we are in a snow bully and we are afraid to tilt our heads back not to tip the van over. We come to a sign advising us not to go on with “campervan” so we listen and park right there. The view we have is out of this world. We are overlooking the whole caldera filled with green water, the sky is pink/red and the moon is peaking through the clouds. Surprisingly it is not cold at all and the sun sets at 21:00, a lot later than in Australia. Just before we park the van I have a very important phone call about a job offer. I guess it goes well but instead of joy we are overtaken by sorrow. Our decision means we will be away from our families again. Strange. One has to be careful what he/she wishes for cause they might get it all. On the other hand we have faith that God has plans for us and they are plans for good not evil to give us future and hope.

You will do anything…

We made a move last week.  The power was going out at the campground we made home over the last 5 months.  So we packed up and headed off to a place that is open all winter.  The down side?  I can’t have my workroom, no tents.  WHAT???

This can’t be real!

A week till my first big show and no way to finish the work I had started.  Yet one more time I get pushed back just when things start to move along.

To be honest I wanted to throw in the towel, I almost did.  Then I thought about how much this means to me.  How much work I have put in and the hardships that had been over come to get to this point.

A supportive family and some wonderful friends remind me that if there is a will you can find the way.  So now I have most of my supplies in bins stacked outside of our camper.  When I need something I bring it in and return it when I am done.

Favorite Camp Memory: Besides Mikey Stark walking in the pool, my favorite camp memory was during Weekend Getaway 2009. I saw my old buddy Davis Walker pulling up to Marywood.  I didn’t think he would remember me but I wanted to greet him anyway. Right when he got out of the car, we made eye contact and his eyes lit up and he screamed “KEVIN!!!!!!” Then he ran at me and gave me a jump hug. That was definitely my favorite camp memory.

What are you up to currently? I am currently going to school at Santa Ana College finishing up my lower division classes so I can transfer to Sacramento State. Once I get to Sac State I plan on majoring in Liberal Studies so I can become a special ed teacher (camp influence)! Other than going to school, I’ve been counting down the days until January ACE (51 days)!

My friend called me today to ask my opinion on finding an essential fall shoe – fashionable yet comfortable, lays well underneath pants, small non-stiletto heel and good for winter/can be worn with socks. She thought her solution was the Dansko clog. I agree to a certain extent especially in the area of comfort and can be worn with socks, but there are definitely better items out there to choose from. I’m giving my kudos to PayPal, or rather the creator of PayPal.  I do not have many “good” experience’s in the customer service department, I don’t expect too much, just help, tell me where the walnut oil is, you don’t even have to take me to the isle, just tell me what isle it’s in.  Don’t tell me you’re not sure if you carry it unless you’re going to follow that up with actually finding out if the store carries it.  Just an example, I could go on, but I’m sure you either know what I’m talking about because of your own experience or you have mastered the customer “no” service yourself.  I ordered a patch repair kit for our camper.  Of course I needed for a trip to the coast so I, preparing ahead of time, looked for it a month ahead of the trip.  I’m organized like that.  First placed I ordered from failed to mention they only sell in bulk & canceled my order.  Why oh why then can you ORDER only one then?  One week down.  Next place, they won’t sell the small patch size I need, so I order the smallest they sell, 4″x5′.  Long story short, I don’t get the usual emails from the company saying , order submitted, order shipped, here’s your tracking number, etc.  So I contact them asking for a tracking number.  No response.  I email again, this time with a “HELLO?”.  No response.  So one more time telling them I will have to contact PayPal if I don’t hear back by the end of the next business day.  No response.  I reported it to PayPal, they took care of everything, the day after I reported it to PayPal the company had shipped my patch.  Not getting it until the day after we got back from our trip & the fact that my “one” patch is actually SIX 4″x60″ patches, does not change the fact that without PayPal that place would have just screwed me over.  I guess now I can sell all the extra patches on ebay & be ensured I’ll get payment from people through PayPal.  Yay!

This time we sleep in till 08:30, have some breakfast, call Wicked to arrange a 4WD in New Zealand (in the end we don’t go through with it as it seems it makes no sense) and I process some paper work.

Doug leaves on his chopper to a meeting and the two of us drive in his car to a scheduled massage appointment at 11:00. At AUD80,- p.p. it’s quite expensive but we are both in desperate need of one due to all the sitting and driving we have done. Walking away we feel pretty beat up but hope to feel better tomorrow. We drive to downtown Perth, walk around and do some minor shopping in surfshops. It’s beautifully sunny, warm with occasional cloud and breeze cooling things down a bit. The good news is that Wicked Campers grants and confirms the 20% discount on our New Zealand rental! Yeah, the blog just paid for itself.

Back at Doug’s house we chill there and Doug & I watch a movie while Katka goes to Zumba lesson with Hannah, Nikki and Cassandra. Then we drive to the girls’s place to have a barbecue. It is a wonderful evening and we laugh a lot.
