So this week folks, I’d like to take you through a mock virtual tour of Ecole Hoteliere Lavasa (LEH)

So this week folks, I’d like to take you through a mock virtual tour of Ecole Hoteliere Lavasa (LEH) by using some artist’s impressions of the college.

Check out this image – it’s a depiction of the college campus from four different angles. Planned to host a total of 600 students and spread across 4 acres, LEH has some world class infrastructure.

And I know a lot of institutions make the same claim, so if you’re a skeptic like me , you’d want facts! So let’s see…..

1) For starters – the college offers various types of kitchens. The general kitchen where students can practice and learn, is about 750 sq cms and spans across two levels. Besides this, there is also a demo/display kitchen for guest lecturers, complete with ceiling mirrors for better viewing (cool nah?!). To top things off, there are two satellite kitchens as well….

- hmmm… kitchens anyone?

2) Check out these images of the four planned auditoriums, each with a seating capacity of 60, to host various events, presentations and guest lectures.

3) To facilitate hands-on learning the college has unique facilities of a bakery, confectionary and housekeeping lab – where students clean, scrub, bake and learn through doing.

4) Besides these facilities, there will also be a fast food court, coffee bar, fine dining services, a cyber hotel, guestrooms and a ‘theme’ restaurant where students can practice what they’ve learned in the classroom through real-life situations.

In addition there are 20 classrooms with multimedia facilities, study rooms, a two level library, an out-door sitting area (in this image it’s the green space!) and

…. what more could one ask for?

Keep watching this space for campus images and details of all the planned facilities at EHL.

"Most Americans do not know slavery not only exists in the world today, it flourishes," said Ron Soodalter, co-author of The Slave Next Door, in his presentation in the Pegasus Ballroom Monday morning.

"Somewhere around 27 million people are in bondage in the world today. Now, that’s over twice the number as were trafficked in chains in the entire 350 years of the African slave trade."

Soodalter, an active abolitionist and historian, kicked off International Education Week at UCF as the keynote speaker for the Second Annual International Breakfast. The Slave Next Door presentation concluded the three-part series on "Slavery’s Resurgence" facilitated by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Global Perspectives and the International Services Center.

The series began with Somaly Mam, a Cambodian human rights activist, former slave and author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, when she shared her experiences in September.

In October, Micheline Slattery, a human-rights activist and former restavek, or domestic child slave, in both Haiti and the United States, addressed about 300 attendees.

Modern-day slavery includes around 800,000 men, women and children trafficked each year around the world. According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Web site, about 17,500 of them end up in the United States, with a high percentage received in Florida.

Soodalter suggests a simple Google search on human trafficking for astounding results.

In spite of major federal legislation and anti-trafficking laws passed in 43 states, 103 human-trafficking convictions have resulted, Soodalter said.

Trafficking remains hidden, is largely unreported and difficult to identify. According to the 2009 Trafficking in Persons, or TIP, report, published by the U.S. Department of State, forced labor/involuntary servitude represents the majority of human-trafficking cases in the world. The co-author of Soodalter’s book, Kevin Bales, wrote the original 156-page TIP report, titled “Trafficking Persons in the United States — A Report to the National Institute of Justice.”

“The whole thing is disserving and extending,” said retired UCF foreign language professor David Gurney. “It contributes to the antagonism from people in underdeveloped countries to Western civilizations or Western countries.”

In the 1850s, purchasing a slave ran roughly $1,200, the equivalent of around $40,000 in today’s money. The reality is purchasing a slave today costs as little as $100, which makes them affordable and disposable, Soodalter said.

A trafficking victim lives in fear of violence or the threat of violence daily, he said.

Shawn Cox, victim witness coordinator and licensed clinical social worker with the United States Attorney’s Office, advocates that trafficking is a crime of absolute power over someone. According to the report Cox co-authored, “Victims of Human Trafficking and Trauma,” the psychological consequences of a victim are similar to the consequences of severe or chronic child abuse or experiencing acts of terrorism.

"In case you thought slavery doesn’t touch you, guess again," Soodalter said. "Chances are, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, has been touched by slavery."

The good news is there have been some inroads made recently in the area of agricultural servitude, Soodalter said. When Taco Bell refused to stop buying produce picked by enslaved workers in an effort known as the "Ban the Bell" campaign, it set a precedent that several other companies, including McDonalds, A&W, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut, Whole Foods, Chipotle and Burger King, have followed, Soodalter said.

"The message is clear," Soodalter said. "Slavery and worker abuse will not be tolerated. Not here, not now, not ever."

Mark Freeman, public affairs coordinator for the Global Perspectives Office, said they are hoping to continue the series next spring since response has been incredible. Because of the series last spring, students on campus were so spurred into action they formed the unofficial student group “Students Against Slavery @ UCF,” Freeman said. “Students Against Slavery @ UCF” has a Facebook page, and Harry Coverston serves as the faculty advisor for the group.

"Spreading the word is the most important thing," said Frank Hegedus, a senior political science and international relations major. "There is only right now."

http://www.centralfloridafuture.com/abolitionist-historian-wraps-up-global-perspectives-series-1.2093273

One of the five courses I’m taking this fall 09 in SDSU is called Geology 303 – Natural disaster. Except for my business related courses and a few more, I pretty much suck at everything else. I like, and I’m good at philosophy, or psychology, or sociology. But I’m no good at math, history, literature, physics, etc. Gosh, especially physics.

Physics physics physics… such a nightmare…

Anyway, this geology course I’m taking right now is supposed to be one that I’m not good at. In fact it turned out to be really really interesting and I’m doing quite well.

We all know about volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and so forth. But in this class, I’m doing a lil more in depth of these natural disasters. Probably not so much in depth, then perhaps I would not do so great, but just enough so I could have some foundation knowledge about these disasters. Okay so I’m living in California now, and we’re studying about the earthquakes in the past (like the Great San Francisco earthquake,) how they happened and evacuation strategies when we see them coming. In addition, I used to live in Washington state, and we learned about the active and inactive volcanoes up there. My friends and I once drove up to Mt. Rainier for sightseeing, that mountain turned out to be an active volcano and there is a chance of eruption.

Space Needle and Mt. Rainier, the two great images of Seattle

We should probably all move away from the West Coast.

Funny thing is Vietnam, where I’m from, never has these sort of disasters. Except for some floods once in a while, Vietnam is a super safe place to live. FYI and a lil out of topic: Gunshots are rare in Vietnam. I might do another post talking about how peaceful Vietnam is.

As promised, the pictures from my 2nd photo walk with co-worker Natalie and dog Elliot.

This time I brought my girls, though they didnt end up in too many shots, they are kinda shy and I realized I need to purchase a few more to avoid Pinky:St redundancy in my photos. All 7 of them came with me except my Street Fighter set because they always look out of place in photos.

We started at the north end of campus and walked through the near deserted medical area to the main campus.

First stop was the duck pond which is personally one of my favorite parts of campus. Besides the fact that the homeless frequently bathe in it and its absolutely filthy from the little duckies its a great place to watch the students relaxing from their studies, or amercing themselves in them.

We explored a lot of random pathways, led by Natalie who spent her college years there. I have to say it was still pretty quiet for a Thursday school day.

The amount of bicycles tell me that there must be students stashed somewhere.

One thing I noticed about UNM is that the architecture is very inconsistent. It varies from old standard american style buildings to american indian pueblo buildings to modern experimental architecture. I don’t think they could make up their minds.

Notes on Student Protest: Lancaster, Friday 20th 2009

We are people of this generation, bred in at least modest comfort, housed now in universities, looking uncomfortably to the world we inherit.

-Port Huron Statement, 1962

To save myself from repetition, and to mark the event with a different blogging style, the record of Friday’s protest is in pictorial form… I have no skill in this department, so it is a very amateur exhibition, but I hope you enjoy the photos anyway.

Yesterday was the second leg of the Lancaster student campaign for fairer fees and funding. The event took place on campus, guaranteeing, you might think, popular support and a large crowd. Unfortunately the weather being typically Lancastrian, and the neo-liberal consensus ubiquitous, attendance peaked at around 200 (about the same as in the city centre).

We assembled at one edge of Alexandra Square, sheltering under the Spine from the rain. There were a few faces there I was glad to recognise. The atmosphere was fairly jubilant, but everyone was waiting to see if the initially small crowd would swell. The gathering beginning to reach respectable numbers, LUSU blue-coats demanded everyone step out into the drizzle for a speech from HMV (Mr President). I have to admit that I stayed under the shelter with a small contingent of the less-enthusiastic. I heard enough to realise Michael was repeating much of the speech given at the previous protest. “Is he chief of the theatre club too?” a friend asked. To give the man his due, the faithful lapped it up happily, and the occasion was marked. Onwards with the march.

The march proceeded down the spine, and out to the Lancaster House Hotel where the Vice-chancellor and his cronies were to hold a meeting. Most of them snuck in the back door of the hotel to avoid the student crowd. A few friendly members of the upper-echelon passed through our tunnel, acknowledging out cause. Michael Payne eventually went into the meeting. There was a rumour that for some time he was being kept out. But, once he was allowed nside he didn’t return. We stood there on the grass verge in the mud for perhaps two hours, or more. The chants kept going, the mood stayed cheerful. No-one can fault the spirit of those who were there. Eventually Danny Ovens (?) called everyone together for a show-of-strength march back up the Spine to Alex sq. It was a good move; numbers were depleting gradually, due to seminar commitments and bad weather. In the square there was a last huddle, and then a few vigilantes decided to storm Greg’s. All in all, a very Lancastrian demonstration.

Rasmussen College’s Green Bay campus hosted Wisconsin State Senator Dave Hansen on Monday, November 9.

The Senator visited the college’s School of Allied Health to generate awareness about a new state bill that will require statewide education, testing and accountability for all massage and bodywork therapists. The Hansen/Berceau 2009-10 Massage Licensing Bill will ensure all massage therapy and bodywork therapy professionals meet the proposed state standards for education and training.

“As one of the few colleges in the Green Bay area that offers an Associate’s Degree in massage therapy, Rasmussen College is happy to welcome Senator Hansen to our campus to demonstrate the importance proper training has for professionals in this field,” said Scott Borley, Campus Director, Rasmussen College Green Bay.

The Minnesota Board of Nursing has approved the Associate’s in Professional Nursing degree program, offered through the Rasmussen College School of Nursing at its Mankato, Minnesota campus.

The Mankato nursing program is designed to prepare students to sit for the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurses) exam, which is required in order to obtain a Minnesota nursing license and practice as a registered nurse.

“Professional Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers in the United States,” explained Rasmussen College Campus Director John Pappas. “Our Associate’s in Professional Nursing degree will help alleviate the dire need for board-approved training programs for incoming nursing professionals.”

The Professional Nursing program is the second nursing degree offered through the Rasmussen College School of Nursing. The college also offers a Practical Nursing degree program.

The enrollment at Rasmussen College’s Mankato campus is steadily climbing, and the college is adding several new programs to meet the needs of the students, according to the Mankato Free Press.

The president of the Mankato campus, John Pappas, said that the campus has seen a 10 percent increase in student enrollment this year. A vast majority of the student enroll in the nursing program, which is the major program expanding at the Mankato campus.

The campus will be the first of its kind to offer a two-year registered nursing degree. According to the Mankato Free Press, the program will begin enrolling students in January for the program’s opening in April 2010.

On Wednesday, we took the streets at St. George and Harbord with signs to raise the issue of abortio

On Wednesday, we took the streets at St. George and Harbord with signs to raise the issue of abortion on campus. Abortion in Canada is legal through all 9 months of pregnancy. We believe it’s a lousy cop out to provide a woman in a crisis pregnancy situation with death for her unborn child rather than real assistance; killing is neither caring nor compassionate.

We had a great turn out from our members, and even a few non-members who stopped by to show support and even help out. One passerby stopped for over an hour to hold a sign saying, “Abortion Kills Children.” We were active for about 5 hours, longer than we’d planned, because support was just so great. We had at least 20-30 members show up at one point during the day, many staying for most of the afternoon.

Of course, our pro-choice friends had a small showing as well, helping to attract more attention to our event. Personally, I enjoyed the conversations I was able to share with a few of the counter-protesters, one of whom complimented us on the material we were handing out and agreed that it was important for us to raise the issue of personhood (while obviously still disagreeing with us on abortion). It’s nice to have relatively civil pro-choicers on the UofT campus.

Thanks to all the UTSFLers who made the event such a success! Photos are up on Flickr and our Facebook page, and I’ve got a few video clips to upload soon.
